Using Time Capsule disk as Media Library - backup questions

OK..have my iMac (last of the polycarbonate 27") connected to a 500GB Time Capsule. Am now backing up to a separate external 1TB disk I bought, and I've setup the Time Capsule disk as my Media Library for iTunes. Will I have a problem backing up the TC disk via Time Machine to a different drive?

Hi...I guess I wasn't clear. It's not a network drive. Both drives are connected to my iMac, the 1TB via USB and the Time Capsule via Ethernet. Both my iMac & my Mac laptop will back up to the USB drive via Time Machine, but I'm wondering if the Media Library on the Time Capsule drive will backup. The Time Capsule drive is not listed in the exclusions in Time Machine preferences, so I'm guessing it will, but was wondering if anyone had a similar experience.

Yes, you have two options here, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Option 1...connect the Time Capsule to your AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable connection. Turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule since your AirPort Extreme is already providing wireless.
Advantages...easy to configure, you can backup either over wireless or plug directly into one of the Ethernet ports to backup large files 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Disadvantages...none, except it requires a wired Ethernet connection to the AirPort Extreme.
Option 2....configure the Time Capsule as a wireless only hard drive.
Advantage.....you can locate the Time Capsule anywhere you want as long as it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.
Disadvantages....harder to configure, backups will occur only over wireless.

  • Can we use Time Capsule as a Media Server????

    Hi
I know time capsule is used for backups and you can connect your external HDD through USB to TC. Can we somehow use TC as a media server so that my PS3 picks up TC as media server and is able to stream all my digital files stored on my external HDD (connected to TC) to my PS3?
    Can this be done?

Sorry, but no. The TC is not a DLNA-compliant media server. However, it could be used as a media drive. (ref: Gigaom: Using Time Capsule as a Media Drive)

  • Using Time Capsule to host iTunes library for use by multiple user accounts

I have recently purchased my first Time Capsule (2TB, delivered December 2010). I have also recently begun to share a single iTunes library with my partner (ie. we have separate user accounts, but following the instructions found at http://steve-on-sakai.blogspot.com/2009/07/really-sharing-your-itunes-library.ht ml, both of our iTunes apps open to the same library).
I think i've done everything correctly, as everything will work as expected ... once we are able to force our way into iTunes.
My knowledge gap seems to be with my understanding of how Time Capsule and its "Data" folder work.
I've moved our entire iTunes folder into the Data folder on the Time Capsule, and i understand that only one of our user accounts can have iTunes running (that one must quit iTunes before the other user will be able to launch iTunes).
What happens sometimes, seemingly dependant on who has signed into their account first, or who has launched and quit iTunes first, is that iTunes will not launch; we are required to choose an iTunes library. This is easily enough done, except when the Data folder is unavailable to that particular user at that time (indicated by the "do not enter" symbol). I've noticed that disconnecting and re-connecting to the Time Capsule will get around this.
I stumble through these steps whenever possible, but my partner is nervous about having to do all of this when i'm not available.
Naturally, what i would like is for either of us, at any time, to be able to simply launch iTunes without issue.
iTunes preferences on each accounts show that our iTunes Media folder location is "/Volumes/Data/iTunes/iTunes Music", and both checkboxes are checked for keeping the iTunes Media folder organized and copying files to the iTunes Media folder.
I suspect that my problem might stem from the fact that i initially followed the instructions given at the above steve-on-sakai blog post, using our Shared folder. Since then, i have moved everything to the Time Capsule, and i wonder if the Terminal command in Step 7 should be repeated for the Data folder ... but i'm not "literate" enough to know what i'm doing there (but wise enough to know i shouldn't mess around with Terminal if i don't know what i'm doing).
I have spent hours browsing the discussions here and elsewhere, and i can't seem to find anything that specifically addresses my issues. I have learned a lot from my searches, but i felt that posting a new question was my best option. I hope that i haven't duplicated anything.
I hope that someone will be able to fine tune my efforts so that everything will "just work".
Thank you so much, in advance...
    Bill.

Two things that are not clear

    Anyone with experience?
I think what you mean is that it's not possible for two Macs to access the same iTunes library (ie. the same collection of media files) at the same time. From my research, this seems to be the case, and that's not my issue.
In my particular situation -- one that i'm sure is shared by many others -- my partner and i have separate user accounts on the same Mac, +entirely sharing a single iTunes Library+ (ie. same media files, same playlists, etc., as if we were a single user) and as long as we remember to quit iTunes whenever we walk away from the Mac (allowing the other to log in and launch iTunes and access our common library), this is not a problem.
And that is when my particular problem arises: when we launch iTunes, we are often asked to choose a Library (a series of navigations that my partner isn't entirely comfortable with), and occasionally the Data folder on the TimeCapsule is unavailable.
As for the wireless connection to our library, this has not so far proven to be an issue. Depending on what other activities are going on at the time (ie. TimeMachine backups or background Internet activity, i presume), i have only rarely experienced brief interruptions in music streaming from the TimeCapsule (<1 second). In fact, last night, we watched a movie on the laptop, with the file streaming from the TimeCapsule, and it only hesitated a few times, and again for less than a second.

  • Using Time Capsule to store iTunes library

I use my 1 TB Time Capsule to store my iTunes library and point my iTunes to where it is stored in the Preferences/Advanced section of iTunes. However, iTunes often reverts to the old storage location on my MacBook Pro. Is there another folder or setting where I need to make a change so that my iTunes stays pointed to my Time Capsule for all of my music?

  • How do I transfer files form a time machine backup disk to a time capsule disk to retain older backup data?

I have just purchased a Time capsule and wish to transfer old backups to the new system, but the disk image does not appear except during backups and even then will not allow backup files to be copied across from the old Backups.backupdb to the new one as was possible before.
    Any ideas?

Backups are stored differently on a drive that is connected directly to a Mac compared to a network drive like the Time Capsule. Things can get real complicated depending on exactly what you are trying to do.

  • Can't use time capsule because it won't backup a "case sensitive drive".  what does this mean?

Back up fails because the time machine can't back up a "case sensitive" disk.  I have no idea what this means or how to fix it.

What are you backing-up to, an external HD or a Time Capsule?
Check the Format of your internal HD and your external HD (assuming that's what you're backing-up to), via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utiliites folder).
Click the partition (indented under the main line for the drive) in the sidebar, and see what's shown at the bottom:
Do the same for your Time Machine drive, and report what you find.

  • Time Capsule Disk Not Unmounting After Backup

I had been using a TC for time machine backups. The TC was connected by ethernet cable to an AEBS that I used for my internet connection. The TC was used for the backups only. I was having problems with the AEBS so for a few days I reconfigured the TC to to provide my wifi connection from my modem but turned off time machine backups until I sorted things out. I've now replaced the AEBS with a new one and have gone back to connecting the TC to it by ethernet cable and using it only for the backups (wireless mode off). The backups are happening without any issues but for some reason after the backup is complete the hard drive/disk image that mounts on my desktop during the backup does not unmount. I can manually do this in Finder or by dragging it to the trash.
Is there some setting for this or have I messed something up when I reconfigured the TC for backups only?

I had the same problem; timecapusule disk could not mount. I got this message when I wanted to make a backup for the first time on a brand new computer (MacBook Pro).
I found out that the computer had no computername (prefrences -> sharing). When I entered a computer name the backup started.
I think the computer did not have a name because all settings were copied using the Migration Tool. I think the computer name is not copied as it is a new computer. It is left empty! The computer should get at least a default name.
    Apple -> please fix this!

  • Time Capsule as Itunes Media Storage

I'm thinking about buying a Time capsule, but I want to know if that's what I really need.
    1) My main problem is that I can't use my MacBook to hear music, watch movies or sync my Iphone 4 through my apartment 'cause my Library is in an External hard disk that needs electric power to function, so every time that I need to buy/hear music, watch a movie from my MacBook I have to be connected to my External HD. So, if I buy a TC can I sync/stream wirelessly my devices?
    2) Also I have an Apple TV and much of the times I buy music/movies/videos from there. If I connect the Apple TV to the TC, My library stills in just one folder in the TC?
    3) The TC is always on? or it starts up when a device is trying to connect to it?
Thank you very much in advance...

  • Referenced images on time capsule disk

    hi,
because i'm running out of space on my mbp's hard disk, I'm thinking of putting referenced images on a time capsule disk, keeping the library on the mbp, wil this disk be fast enough. The network will be "n" and i'll connect anonther disk to it for back up?
    wil this setup be possible?

The setup is possible but it will be slow, especially if you are using raw or tiff files. Most jpegs are probably workable.
Just get an external drive for your MBP and connect using hardwire of some type.
I have my library on my 15" MBP (and yes, I have previews turned to match 1440x1440) so that I can view the overall content of my library - and also share with iWork/iLife suite. My referenced masters are all on external dirve (2x, one being a backup).
    Cheers

  • Access Time Capsule disk from iOS device (iPad, iPhone)

My intended goal is to use Time Capsule disk as cloud replacement for MobileMe iDisk which is being discontinued in June.
I've done Time Capsule 7.6.1 update with iCloud support, entered my iCloud account settings, and authorized disk access via WAN. Everything appears to be configured properly as I can access my Time Capsule disk on Mac computers from outside my home network. How do I access this disk on iPhone and iPad?

I use FileBrowser app. It works. Their latest version is much easier to configure than earlier versions. You need to turn file sharing on and SMB on your time capsule disk.
I use the time capsule disk to store a few files which I never want to be on my iPhone or iPad, but do want access to them. They are not backed up on the time capsule but since they also exist on my Mac, they are backed up from there.

can i use time capsule to backup movies and see them wireless without redirecting my itunes library to the time capsule?

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

    Many thanks.

    Help !
The last few days my time capsule reports an error       The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.
To make things worse I seem to be loosing my screen so need to make a back up ASAP

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
This will fix the issue about 98% of the time. If you are in the unlucky 2% category, please post back for more assistance
