Using time capsule to back up two drives?

Hello.
I haver done a search on this but am unable to find a clear answer.
I work on a macbook pro with a hard drive attached, keeping my large files off my system drive.
I currently back up both the system drive and external work drive with superduper, which works, but I want something automatic.
My question is, can I partition a time capsule and have time machine back up to two drives wirelessly? Meaning everything is safe without me having to do anything...
Thanks in advance.

Apologies!
The answer came up in the 'more like this' section on the right. Glad it's possible...

I had used it to back my home macbook and then my college student came home and backed up her mac book pro and now the time capsule has her name on it and i can not use it to back up my macbook.
Do I have to divide it somehow??

No, the TC can be shared between 2 MacBooks out of the box. It looks like the 2nd user has reconfigured it, so you'll have to configure it (using AirPort Utility) back to be your chosen name.

  • Using Time Capsule to back up two computers

Hi, I want to use TC and TM for my imac and macbook. I was told that TC will automatically make a file for both if they are named differently. My imac back ups are fine. But my macbook backups, strangely, only backing up the desktop files.
    1. How do I get TM to back up all files on my macbook like my imac
    2. How do I get rid of the many back ups it has already made of the desktop files WITHOUT losing my imac back ups.
    Thanks everyone.

Thanks for your response. No, nothing else was open. I did figure out the finder part, but still don't understand why I just can't open TM with my macbook and have it go to a full finder window in list form. My imac opens like this without the extra step of opening the finder first. Even weirder, on the macbook from the finder window (it opens automatically with a window of my desktop folders only) it won't let me change the view to a full finder window with sidebar. Finally, it always says calculating size and never gives me a size under Get Info. Thanks for your input.

Yes, if you use an application like Genie Timeline Pro, which was designed for this type of purpose.  Genie Timeline will make a complete copy of your Dell on the first backup. After that, it will only backup the changes that have occurred since the last backup.

Apple has specific instructions on moving libraries.
    eg itunes.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
    You simply follow those instructions..
TC is a network drive.. nothing more.
To move individual files, just copy and paste to a new directory.. not inside a TM sparsebundle please.
BUT.. TC only worries me.. deeply.
It is relatively easy to corrupt a library when you copy to it.. library as a whole is then corrupted and will need to be restored from backup.. wops.. no backup. You are putting at risk all your files.. don't do it.. make sure you backup..
And here is the rub.. TC cannot back itself up.. TM cannot backup network drives.
And where are you going to backup.. to... an external drive on the computer.. in that case, that is where the library should be and the TC used as normal.. ie backup target for TM.
Please read Pondini on how to do it properly though.

  • Just want to use Time Capsule as a wireless hard drive?

I thought I was computer savvy until now.
I just want to use Time Capsule as a wireless hard drive. I do not want to connect my Internet to it whatsoever. I realize this would involve disconnecting from Time Capsule and reconnecting to my Internet every time.
The settings for Time Capsule are just mind-boggling.
Is there any easy way to set it up as a password-protected wireless hard drive?
I am so lost with all the settings.
Please help! I will provide points!

First, you don't need to use Time Capsule with Time Machine. It can be used as a manual file storage or file exchange drive.
Where do you have the Ethernet cable placed on the Time Capsule. Is it the WAN port or one of the network ports?
If you are attempting to set-up the Time Capsule as your wireless router, it will need to be connected to the wired modem from your service provider through the WAN port for configuration. The Time capsule should then appear as a configurable Airport device.
To start, turn off your cable or DSL modem and the Time Capsule. Turn them both back on with the Time capsule connected to the wired modem via of the WAN port so the modem can grab the TC's MAC address.

  • Can i use time capsule for back up my movies and watching them with my bravia tv

can i use time capsule for back up my movies and watching them with my bravia tv.
i mean can i use this for external hard disk drive to back up my movies and watching them with tv that has a lan port or wi-fi technology.

Only if the TV is a media player.. the TC is dumb as a board router with a hard disk.. there is no DLNA which I suspect the TV requires.. you can get a player like the WDLive and it will play movie files from the TC to the TV.. remember the TC is nothing but a file store.. no servers .. no nothing.

Yes, but it will be slow and expensive compared to just buying an external and plugging it in locally.

  • Using Time Capsule to back up Mac Book Pro and external drive

we're changing our main computer in the house to our mac book pro, which is not currently backed up, so i'm thinking of buying a time capsule. our current main machine is an old pc with two external hard drives connected....one used as the main file storage location and the second as a back up location. the main large files on these drivers are photo's, videos and scanned documents. can i use the time capsule to back up the mac book with an external hard drive connected to it? i'm thinking of leaving all the photo's, videos, documents, etc. on the external harddrive but want to be able to back it up to the time capsule as well as backing up the mac book pro. can backing up the external hard drive be set up to activate automatically daily as I think the mac book can? thanks

This is not as simple as it could be..
Firstly the Mac can read the external drives via the PC if they are shared to the network.. it cannot read them directly plugged into the Mac or the TC.
Also the TC is not really designed to store files.. it is a location for backups by TM..
Read some of the stuff Pondini.. our local Time Machine expert.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Q3 here is relevant. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
The hard drives would have to be plugged directly into the Mac to be backed up and they would have to be reformatted to Mac format. So you would need to offload the files.. format and then load the files back.. no trivial task.

  • Using Time Capsule to back up external hard drive

I just purchased a Time Capsule with hopes to backup an external hard drive. I thought I could have it plugged into the Time Capsule USB port and run TIme Machine from my computer. Then, I was told that I couldn't do that but would have to plug Hard drive to my laptop and backup to Time Capsule that way. Now I was told that backing up should work (but not supported) but if I ever have to restore, could be problematic.
What is the scoop on this? Can I back up this way successfully? I am looking for recommendations for backing up this external hard drive which we use a shared drive.

  • How to allocate x-GB amount of disk from Time Capsule to back up two Mac?

I have a 1TB Time Capsule, and two Mac - iMac with 320GB, and MacBook with 160GB. How can I allocate 600GB of the 1TB Time Capsule to back up my iMac, and 300GB of the 1TB Time Capsule to back up my MacBook? And leave the rest (around 100GB) just sitting around to act as a drop box.
    Kenneth

Hello kennethium. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The sure way is to temporarily remove the Time Capsule's (TC) internal drive (voiding your warranty), and then, repartition it to three separate partitions of the sizes you desire. Finally, of course, reinstall the drive.
The other way that maybe partially possible is to create a disk image on the TC, using the Disk Utility for a size your require as the "drop box." I don't believe you can use disk images in this manner for Time Machine backups. Time Machine, in turn, should leave this disk image alone. The disadvantage of disk images is they are not accessible by Windows or Linux clients.

  • Using time Capsule to replace new hard drive on MacBook Pro?

I am replacing the internal hard drive on my MacBook pro (early 2008).  I have a time capsule that I would like to use to restore the entire back-up on the time capsule to the new hard drive.  What is the procedure to do this?  Thanks.

    First, prep the new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Second, install Snow Leopard on the new drive.
Third, after Snow Leopard starts for the first time you will be in the Setup Assistant. When you complete the registration you will be presented with the options for continuing or restoring from a TM backup or another Mac. Select the TM option and restore your data.

  • How To Use Time Capsule As An External Hard Drive?

I backup my computer onto the time capsule using time machine.
After that I want to have more space on my computer (becasue my hard drive is almost full) (I still want to have my local snapshots and daily backups) so I want to delete some of my files but I still want them on my time capsule and I know after I back my computer the files will be deleted so I go to finder/my time capsule (under shared)/data/my macbook pro/ then I go to my destop and see; 1: time machine backups 2: data... I go to data and create a new file that will contain everything that I wanted deleted off my macbook so the when the next backup comes, I will still have (in data on time capsule) my time machine backups and my deleted things... will this work? why or why not? I heard people saying that you have to choose the time capsule between a external hard drive or with time machine... but will this attempt work with both>???

It will work but shouldn't be done, as the Time Capsule's internal drive may fail at any time. Anything you want to keep shouldn't be on only one drive.

  • How do you use time capsule with an external hard drive

I would like to use time machine to back up to my external hard drive.
When I tried to set it up it said it would wipe out everthing currently on it to start using it.
I do not want it to wipe our what I have currently have on the hard drive.  Any suggestions?
I do have icloud.  Can I back up using time machine to that?

Purchase another external drive. Time Machine will only back up to a drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
