Using time capsule to extend the reach of my wireless network

I have a comcast router but wireless coverage only makes it halfway through my apartment. Bought a motorola router for front of apt, attached to cable and time capsule, but I'm not sure what to do next. Do I want to create a separate network or try to extend the comcast network? To make things more fun, my computer will only find the time capsule on one out of 20 scans, the other times nothing shows up. Thanks for any feedback/advice.

You need to use the airport utility on a computer.
If you use v6 utility it is fairly easy and straight forward.
The trick is to place the old TC in the same room as the new one.
Do a full factory reset and then you can just go through the utility to extend wireless network.
I did one post with all the pictures.

If you have issues just ask.
Then you can place the old TC about half way between the new TC and the clients would want to connect.. the half way point is not distance but wireless signal levels.
You can pick that up by using the wireless diagnostics in a mac laptop and walking around to pick up the signals.
This is for extend wireless.. if you want roaming network it is entirely different. That means they are plugged together with ethernet.
Tell us if you mean roaming not wireless extend.

They said I need to change my settings to NAT settings. I haven't been able to figure out or find anything. I have also spoken to Apple Support on the phone for hours without being able to figure out how to do this ( i don't think he knew much either lol.) Please help me because I've got about 15-20 devices in my house that require to be connected to the internet and this is just making things ridiculously slow and painful for me.
    Thanks!

It is on DHCP & NAT under router mode yet my isp is still the one issuing ip addresses to my devices instead of the router issuing them

  • Internet from time capsule 1/5th the speed of other wireless network

    Hi...
Here's the problem. I have a time capsule 500gb set up in my house and connected via ethernet to another linksys wireless router and then via ethernet to my ASDL Modem. The problem i have is that the internet connection (when tested on Speedtest.net) is aprox. 1/5th the speed of the linksys network. any idea's why that might be?
I have my time capsule set up in WDS mode with an 802.11g Airport Express to distribute the network through the entire house. The speed is the same if i'm next to the time capsule or in any part of the house so i don't think its a signal strength thing. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

No, you are not using a full IPv6 system.. you are simply making sure the link to the TC is able to use IPv6.
Go to the Networking preferences and bring up the wireless setup, advanced. TCP/IP
Change the IPv6 setting to link-local.
Ensure ipv6 is set in the TC to link-local.
So click on the TC in the airport utility.. click on edit.. click on the internet tab. Click on internet options.
    Then test your speed again.
If you have issues still give us a link speed when you are sitting in the same room as the TC.

  • Can i use my airport to extend the range of my wireless network?

I currently have a two wireless networks set up in my home. Network 1 is the wireless router provided by Verizon Fios. It has a stong signal in about half of my home. Network 2 -  I attached my airport to one of the LAN ports in the the back of the Fios router. I want to use my airport as a way to extend the range of my Fios wireless network. Is this possible?

Network 2 can effectively "extend" Network 1 if the AirPort is permanently connected to the Fios router using an Ethernet connection.
You would configure the AirPort to "create a wireless network" using exactly the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Fios network. Additionally, the AirPort must be configured in Bridge Mode for this to work correctly.
The most difficult part of doing this will be to find the exact type of wireless security that the Fios router is using and then find a corresponding compatible match on the AirPort. If the settings do not match up exactly, you'll have two networks which will require separate log ons.
Configured correctly, your laptop will be able to "roam" from one area of the house to another and stay on the same network. That's why this type of setup is called a "roaming network".
If you can locate the security settings for the Fios router and post back with that info, we can provide you with a step by step configuration for the AirPort if you need it.

i was using time capsule to extend a network.  now i want it to be the primary base station.  how do i convert this?

Thanks for the info. Since this is a cable modem, you will need to fully reset it so that it will associate correctly with the Time Capsule when it is reconnected.
I don't have the manual for your Ubee model handy, but most modems will reset if you power them down completely. That means pulling the power cord from the back of the device or unplugging from the wall. Leave the modem powered off at least 30 minutes...longer will not hurt a bit.
Next, perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule per this document:
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
After the modem has been powered down and Time Capsule has been reset, connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port (circle icon) on the Time Capsule.
Power up the modem and let it run for 2-3 minutes by itself
Then power up the Time Capsule and let it run a minute or two
Next, open AirPort Utility and configure the Time Capsule to "Create a wireless network". Let us know what operating system you are using on your Mac or PC if you have additional questions or need more details on this.

  • Using Time Capsule to extend network

Hello: I have a Belkin N1 wireless modem router (ADSL) and have my Time Capsule connected the the modem via ethernet cable. I have the modem at the moment connected to my MacBook Pro via ethernet cable, and am able to connect to the Internet in that manner. My problem is that I cannot sem to extend my wireless network with my Time Capsule, which is what I want to do. Any advice or help? Thanks in advance.

I first tried connecting my new Time Capsule to my 2Wire gateway (DSL modem and router) via the ethernet cable to form a parallel network, but some incompatibility kept messing up the gateway's settings (resulting in losing Internet and phone altogether). I have since used the Time Capsule to extend the network via wireless only. This currently seems to work, although I have lost access to the Time Capsule on more than one occasion this afternoon for no apparent reason. I have not yet been successful in further extending the network using my Expresses -- which are used to connect ReplayTVs to the network.
Unfortunately, I cannot find a way to turn off the router function on the gateway (a previous DSL modem allowed me to do this -- most recently, I had my Extreme connected up via ethernet to the 2Wire gateway and forming a parallel network).
In case I need to replace the gateway to get this to work properly and in a stable fashion, does anyone know which AT&T DSL appropriate modems are most compatible with the Time Capsule?

  • Problems using time capsule to extend wireless network

    Hi all,
For some months I had to move to Germany for work (I'm from Italy, sorry for my English).
I am sharing internet with some other people, the wi-fi router is in their apartment, so basically I don't have access.
As the signal is strong enough only in one room I would like to use my time capsule to extend it also in the other rooms.
But when I try to extend it, my macbook pro connects to the network I would like to extend and the time capsule is not seen anymore.
To see the time capsule again in the airport utility i have to reset it to factory default.
    Do you have any idea?
The wireless network is WPA2 protected, the provider is the German "Unity Media".

As the signal is strong enough only in one room I would like to use my time capsule to extend it also in the other rooms.
Apple's "extend" feature will only work if the Time Capsule is "extending" the wireless signal from another Apple wireless router. In other words, the "extend" feature is not compatible with wireless routers from other manufacturers.
You will need to connect the Time Capsule to the wireless router using a wired Ethernet connection.  Connect from one of the LAN <-> ports on the wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.  Then, you can configure the Time Capsule to provide a separate wireless network for your use.

can i use time capsule to backup movies and see them wireless without redirecting my itunes library to the time capsule?

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

  • How do I resolve error 10057 when trying to set up my airport express to extend the range of my wireless network

I have a Dell XPS running on Windows 7 and use an AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi to get wireless internet access for other laptops in the home. I want to connect an AirPort Express 802.11n into the network to wirelessly extend the range of my wireless network. I have installed the AirPort Utility but when I attempt to connect to the AirPort Express, it gives me an error code 10057 and says I should check the internet connection. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP settings on my PC but that did not fix the issue. The Airport Express is also flashing yellow rather than solid green. Has anyone found a fix for this issue?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

  • Using time capsule to extend a 2003 airport extreme

I have a 2003 airport extreme. I have a 2011Time Capsule. How can I use the Time Capsule to extend my range wirelessly?

Unfortunately, this is not possible, since the older AirPort Extreme does not have a setting to "extend a wireless network", which was added to the AirPort Extreme models in 2007.
It might be possible to have the older AirPort provide some additional wireless coverage if it can be permanently connected back to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet cable connection.

  • Can I use Time Capsule to share a public ip within a network with DHCP enabled?

Hi I have a router with 8 public ip's which is doing DHCP for the public ip's I own. What I am trying to do is to give a static public IP to my Time Capsule and then the time capsule should create another network (both wired and wireless) with private IP (eg. 192.168.1.xxx) and do DHCP to the connected to time capsule devices.
I tried to select the option SHARE A PUBLIC IP but it is not working.
    Any help?
    Armandos

I am assuming that the static IP address that you are attempting to assign the WAN-side of the Time Capsule is one of the eight Public IP addresses available to you ... correct?
If so, then you should be able to configure the TC's WAN port for either: 1) Use the "Using DHCP" option to grab one of these Public IP addresses from the upstream router's DHCP server, or 2) Use the "Manually" option, and then, enter the appropriate IP addresses in their appropriate fields.
With the Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address selected, the TC's NAT & DHCP services will be enabled and they should be able to provide a Private LAN behind it.
Are either or neither the TC's WAN or LAN sides working properly?

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.
Apple doco is also good to read.

    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • What's the best way to use Time Capsule through Extended Wireless Network?

I am operating four computers, three Apples and a PC.  All the Apples use Snow Leopard.  I have a large house where the cable company's modem and internet access is located downstairs at the far back of the house.  That is where I have a 2Tb 802.11n Time Capsule (TC) connected to the modem by ethernet cable.  My iMac is there, connected to the TC by ethernet cable.  In the middle of the house, also downstairs, I have an Airport Extreme (802.11n) operating as a wireless bridge.  Upstairs in the front of the house (very far from the TC and closer but not very close to the AE) I have a home office.  That is where my other two Apples--a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air--are usually located.  The PC is located in a bedroom directly above the TC and wirelessly connects to it.  At all locations, I get four radio signal strength bars.  However, I am not sure that the AE is doing anything, because I get four bars regardless of whether the AE is plugged in, or not.  When it is turned on, Airport Utility on all computers shows both the TC and the AE, but I have not been able to find which Airport ID I am actually connected to.
From my home office I do temporarily lose my internet connection from time to time each day, but the connection recovers usually within seconds.  I assume this reflects occasional interference or other loss of wireless signal in the distant home office, although I do not see the radio bars diminish to less than the four bars.
All three Apples are set up to use the same TC for backup into Time Machine.  However, I have been getting errors on the laptops operating in the home office (a long way from the TC and perhaps connecting directly over wireless or perhaps wirelessly through the AE bridge.  Some messages are to the effect of being unable to backup, and others more recently report errors.  I think that either due to connection interruptions or merely by suspending or turning off the computer while in the middle of backing up, errors in the Time Machine files were created.  I have been unable to delete more than a few of the 8Mb sparsebundle bands so that I can completely get rid of one of the sparsebundles for the MacBook Pro.  I was able to get rid of the other sparsebundle for that computer and also the sparsebundle for the MacBook Air.  I am reluctant to erase the entire TC, because it has been working for the directly connected (by ethernet cable) iMac sitting right next to the TC.
So, I am wondering what is the experience of others who are trying to use TC successfully from computers located a long distance from the TC with either a direct wireless connection or a bridged wireless connection through an AE or other bridge.
And does anyone have good ideas about how to delete the sparsebundles effectively?  I read the various questions and answers in the support community, but so far nothing that I have tried based on those messages seems to work.  It seems that when all the Time Machines are set to "Off" and the sparsebundles are expanded to show the individual bands, we ought to be able to delete them fairly expeditiously.  Sometimes, I can delete one band fairly quickly, but then the second band will hang forever.  More often, I can't even delete the first band.

Thank you, Bob.  I followed the procedure you stated.  My AE is working.  I did register its BSSID when I put my laptop next to it.  This is also the BBSID I am getting when in my home office at the far end of the house from the TC.  This means I am using the extended bridge AE when working and trying to use the automated backup feature in Time Machine.  Do you think I should turn off Time Machine on these laptops when they are in the home office, and bring them into the room with the TC occasionally to have a better connection (wireless to TC or by connecting an ethernet cable) when trying to make Time Machine backups for them?
Interestingly (in contrast to the exact match of BBSID's for my AE), when I compared the BSSID for my TC in Airport Utility to the BBSID of the TC using the option key and the fan shaped Airport icon, the BBSID's matched except for the last two digits.  In Airport Utility, they are 2F.  In the fan shaped Airport icon they are 30.
Also, the AE signal, being centrally located on the first floor of the house, seems to be the one most in use.  When I walked my laptop away from the AE all the way back to the TC, the laptop automatically switched over to the TC only once.  Most of the time, the laptop is still connecting wirelessly with the AE.  To switch back to the TC, I have to turn Airport off, and then turn it back on again.
I don't know how efficient or inefficient the Time Machine is when connecting to the TC indirectly through an AE bridge.

  • Using Time Capsule to extend a wireless network

I have an office in the top of my house (2nd floor roof conversion) and as a result the wireless signal from the ground floor is very weak. i would like to boost the signal using my Time Capsule, placing it on the 1st floor, shortening the distance the signal has to travel.
Is this possible? In the AirPort settings I can seen an option to 'extend a wireless network using an ethernet cable' but if that is the only option I may as well just move my wireless home hub to the 1st floor.
Can the network be extended wirelessly?
    many thanks!

    Thanks for the clarification.
Unfortunately, the "extend a wireless network" feature of the AirPort Express is only compatible with an Apple base station.
Therefore, you will not be able to use the TC to extend the wireless network that has been created by the BT Home Hub. You might check to see if BT offers an "extension device" or "remote" that would allow you to expand your wireless signal.
The TC will need to be configured to "Join" the wireless network that you have there.
