Using Time Capsule without an internet connection

Hi,
I've searched everywhere for a definitive answer to my question, but haven't been able to find it. Can anyone help me with this?
I've got a new MacBook, and a now-full 320GB external HDD full of movies and music. However, I'm working overseas and don't want to commit to an internet subscription at home. The question I'd like to ask is hopefully quite simple:
Can I use a Time Capsule as an external HDD to store my iTunes library (no backing-up at all), wirelessly, without an internet subscription?
I don't want to have to plug my MacBook into anything, but I still want to access my movies etc. Is this possible?
Furthermore, I'm thinking of getting an Apple TV further down the line, and hooking it into my Time Capsule-based network. Can I then stream my iTunes library to my Apple TV, with or without my MacBook turned on?
Thanks

Yes.
When you set up the Time Capsule, you will create a wireless network, choose security settings, etc., but will skip the internet set up portion. You will get 2-3 error messages stating that you will not be connected to the internet once the Time Capsule is updated with your settings, but you can just ignore them.

  • How do I set up the Time Capsule without an internet connection

How do I set up the Time Capsule as a wireless hard drive without an internet connection.   I am in a office situation in which I cannot access my work network.  I need to be able to share files on the Time Capsule over the wire connection.

Are you using a v6 uitlity.. because it is a toy.. ??
Get v5 utility and then you can hold down the option key and select the right mode.
If you have lion, just install it.. For ML follow this.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Using time capsule to share internet connection with a pc via ethernet

    Hi,
I've recently acquired a time capsule and was wondering if i could use it to share a wireless internet connection via ethernet to my non-wireless (windows 7) pc?
My current situation is that i have a wireless modem/router that shares my internet connection wirelessly with my mac mini.
I have a pc without a wireless card that i want to connect to the wireless network so i was wondering if it was possible to attach the pc and the time capsule with an ethernet cable, then connect the time capsule to the wireless network and share the internet connection with the pc.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible, and if so how?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussion area!
IF...your wireless network is now being created by another Apple "n" router like an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express or Time Capsule, it would be possible to do what you want to do.
But the Time Capsule would not be compatible for what you want if your wireless is created by another manufacturer's router. The Time Capsule could "join" this wireless network so that backups would occur over wireless. However, when the Time Capsule is configured this way, the ethernet ports on the device are not active, so this would not help with the ethernet connection that your computer needs.
A new AirPort Express 802.11n would do what you want. It has the capability of joining virtually any wireless network and the ethernet port can be enabled using the ProxySTA feature, so it would work for your purpose.

  • Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: Help?

Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: I am in FL using Brighthouse Cable as my internet provider (15MG down). The internet connection speed is slower than a dial up connection when wirelessly connected to my network to my Time Capsule. When I remove the Time Capsule and replace it with Brighthouses Netgear router the internet speed are normal (fast). Additionally, the internet speed is OK when I first hit a website, but the speed degrades rapidly as I access additional web pages. I no longer use my Time Capsule and therefore are not getting my back-up protection. (NOTE: I tried Verizon Fios and had the same problem.) Can anyone help?

Bought the time capsule in Oct 2013.  I have a Sagemcom 2864 modem from Bell but used through Teksavvy.  The 5 ghz has been flaky until I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 I think.  I had a closer look at it and it appears that the wifi is ok.  I was thrown off by the wifi symbol being all animated in the menu bar.  I was able to ping the time capsule via wifi.  All the status lights on the modem looked ok.  Next time it happens, I'll see if I can get some more details.  Do you know if there's anyway to get some logs from the airport utility?

Time Capsule drops wifi/internet connection and flashes amber.  I've tried unplugging it and my modem but it continues to do this every so often.  The time capsule is out in the open, so I don't think it's a heat issue.  It's running firmware 7.7.3.  Anyone else having this issue?  Any suggestions on how to fix it?  It's driving me crazy!

  • Can i use time capsule without internet connection?

I bought Time Capsule 4th Gen. 2Tb without knowig that it is a router. I already have Netgear N900, and I don't know if I can use them both together.  Currently, it looks like I cannot connect to Apple Time Capsule (ATC) without the internet connection.  I neither have to figure out how to use ATC without the internet, or figure out way to use both of the router at the same time.  Please help me with this problem.  This is my first MacbookPro, and everything is new to me.  I would appreciate any kind of help! Thank you!

Ok .. this is pretty easy.
You plug the WAN port on TC into the N900 LAN port by ethernet.
Open the airport utility on the Mac.
Simply allow it to automatically setup and it should select bridge mode.. if not just jump in at the end .. click on the edit under the summary and go to the network tab and select bridge.
Then go to the wireless tab and make sure you are creating a wireless name.. you can give it the same name as the N900 same security same password.. this is called roaming network.
Or use a different name.. use short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
I have given a different name to 5ghz.
It will not matter which wireless you connect to but the TC is faster on the 5ghz for backups.

  • Can you use time capsule without leopard?

I just wanted to know if time capsule can be used to back up etc without adding leopard?
I'm using the last Tiger update and am reluctant to buy leopard osx if i don't have to as i like tiger.
    Lee

im running Tiger and i want to purchase Time Capsule. i dont really care about using Time Machine or not, and dont want to update to Leopard at the moment. from what i've read here, i can still use Time Capsule, but does this mean the only way i can back-up is wirelessly? or does Time Capsule have a hard line option to connect my MacBook directly to it using a cable?

  • Accessing Time Capsule From Any Internet Connection

Could you please tell me if it will be possible to access Time Capsule from any internet. I would like to put all my files on the device and be able to access these while out on the road.
Thanks in advance for your help
    Cheers Steve

Yes, you certainly can (right now) remotely access the hard drive attached to your AEBSn. I will refer you to "Step 4" in Apple's article Sharing a USB hard disk on your network for instructions on enabling this feature. To access the disk remotely (and don't test this from a computer on your own LAN) select "Connect to Server" from the Finder's "Go" menu, and enter the public IP address of your Base Station.
I have to admit the specs for Time Capsule don't explicitly indicate that Time Capsule will support this feature. However, given this feature is available on the AEBSn and is easy to implement, I would be very surprised if Apple took away this feature when they designed Time Capsule.

  • Using Time Capsule Without Network Connection

In my room I have a USB printer connected to my Time Capsule.  Without configuring the time capsule to connect to my home's wireless network I'd like to:
    - Back up to my time capsule wirelessly using Time Machine
    - Be able to print wirelessly
Is this possible? If so, how?
    Thank you.

    No it isn't possible.
Edit.. LOL!! my answer is opposite to BOB.. I assume you want internet at the same time. He is assuming you will swap from using internet to only using the TC in local network and hence removing all internet connections. So my answer is based on how to get them working at the same time.
What you want is two separate wireless networks.. with no links. And to use both networks simultaneously on only one wireless client card. No can do!!
    What is possible.
You have to connect the TC to the main wireless router. I strongly recommend this be done by ethenet or an ethernet replacement technology like Ethernet over Power EOP .. the adapters are now cheap and fast enough for wireless link. You will turn off wireless in the TC although you can also set it up with identical ssid and security on a different channel.. then you have one flat network and all devices can roam.
    Alternatively..
You need two wireless clients in the laptop/computer you use.
You can buy a usb stick compatible with the OS used.. os x although you nowhere state the type of system. USB stick wireless are cheap and plenty are available that will work fine with Mac OS drivers.
On the USB stick, setup manual network with different IP subnet to the main router, and no gateway or dns. This will allow you to communicate to two different subnets at the same time. (On OS X it does not strictly need such care with gateway and dns as you can control the order of devices better than on a pc.. just the same I would do it manually)
Of course you could also just plug in ethernet and do the same thing.
As per Bob definitely do the backup numero uno by ethenet.. it will take ages by wireless and the chance of a corrupted backup is so so much greater in which case it will just start again.

  • Can I use my Time Capsule without cable internet?

We lost our cable service and are now operating on our resort's wifi.  Is it possible to use my time capsule for backup and/or router now that we don't have internet coming in on a cable?

I am not an express fan.. but what I need to help you is screenshots from your airport utility.
I think it would be smart to
    1. Factory reset the Express.. it is lost and if you run Yosemite that is no surprise.
    2. If you use iphone or ipad then try using the airport utility in that to do the setup.. it is better than Yosemite.
    3. If you do it from computer.. try plugging the express LAN port to the computer.. Leave the TC off.. so there is no Apple wifi to connect to. And turn off the wireless in the computer.. delete all the current wireless names.. then turn wireless back on again.. You want it to be usable by the airport utility but not linked to the resort wifi.
    Then start the setup..
Apple do make logical choices based on how you have the express configured.. if it finds itself in this setup it might actually work..
If it does not come up with correct setup then choose from options.
Here is how I did it on airport time capsule..
The utility picks something.. I do not want it to extend.. so click options.
I want to add it to an existing network.
In your case you would add to existing network.. and the option to Join a wireless network should be there.
If you cannot make sense of it I will get Bob Timmons to help as he uses this setup often and knows it very well using the Express.

  • Does anyone can use time capsule without connection breaks?

if I backup more than 100 mb, the connection via wifi breaks and i can not find the time capsule. either i have to restart computer or time capsule. i use mac lion. time capsule 1 st gen, 500 g

Ok .. this is pretty easy.
You plug the WAN port on TC into the N900 LAN port by ethernet.
Open the airport utility on the Mac.
Simply allow it to automatically setup and it should select bridge mode.. if not just jump in at the end .. click on the edit under the summary and go to the network tab and select bridge.

I have given a different name to 5ghz.
It will not matter which wireless you connect to but the TC is faster on the 5ghz for backups.

  • Using Time Capsule without lan cable

The new router issued by my ISP is without ethernet connection. Can I use my time capsule to share the internet connection instead of the router directly, without lan cable?

The Time Capsule can do what you want if it connects to a wireless signal produced by another Apple wireless router, but it would not be comatible with a 3rd party wireless router.
You might want to get with your ISP and ask them if they have another router available with industry standard things....like an Ethernet port.

  • Time Capsule vs separate internet connection

Warning ..... this may be a rhetorical question!!
I have a TC and have successfully set it up to work with my MacBook. Given the fact I live in UAE where to local internet company do not support Apple products I have managed to work my internet by cable connection into the TC.
PROBLEM 1 - my daughter has a Windows laptop and can no longer use the internet because Vista is not compatible with TC and and in the process of downloading SP1 to sort this out. At the moment, it she tries to access the internet I have to completely reset my TC. This would be the case if anyone else (without a Mac) wanted to use my wireless internet too.
However BIG PICTURE thinking, what happens when another Windows computer wishes to use my wireless internet - they can't unless they have SP1 and Airport utility loaded. In view of this, what is the point of running your wireless internet through TC unles every user has an Apple computer?
This is my current thought and I'd really welcome any thoughts or advice on this dilemma.

Okay. In Manual Setup, click "Internet" in the toolbar. After setting "Connection Sharing" to "Share a public IP address," go to the "DHCP" tab.
Set the last number of the DHCP Beginning Address to 1. Set the last number of the DHCP Ending address to 200.
Now press "AirPort" in the toolbar and go to the "Time Capsule" tab. Uncheck the box that says "Allow Setup over WAN."
Press "Update" and allow your Time Capsule to restart.

  • Time Capsule w/o internet connection

I have an Airport Express that is working just fine for my internet connection. I was thinking of getting the TC for backing up my laptops. Any ideas on how to automate switching between the networks for backup - or any other ideas of how to do this short of wires?

I rent and until I move I am on my Super's connection.
So this is your internet?? We have no idea how that is delivered to you.
I can do everything w/o connection to the internet correct? I am just nervous I have only 45 GB left on the HD,  Stressed deluxe...  Should I just use my capsule as an external HD for the time being? then connect my internet at a later date?
Everything means what?? If you tell us how you get internet ie is it wireless, wired, something else. Then you can use whatever network options are left to connect to the TC.
Why not backup to the TC as per normal.. or is this what you mean by using it as external hd??
There is no reason you cannot use the TC in the network if you get ethernet connection to internet. You can bridge the TC.. or if the Super (whoever that is) only gives you one IP you can route it via NAT. Only it will double NAT.. but that isn't such an issue.. but we cannot really suggest anything without knowing what it is you want.
We need to know, what connections are being used.. wired or wireless.
Just spell out what you really want to achieve.. and then we can suggest ways to do it.
But you cannot do "everything" without internet.. obviously anything that requires internet is immediately unavailable.. but I am not sure that is what you mean.

  • ***Time Capsule intermittently losing internet connection***

    Hello, Here's the story:
My Time Capsule intermittently is losing internet connection. The light is green for 5-10 minutes at a time, then turns amber for 2 minutes and loses internet connection.
At first,..I thought it was the TC going bad. Went to my local Apple store and had it replaced under warranty.
Still,, the same situation was happening.
Then talked to AT&T (DSL) and they checked the connection. They deemed it was OK and possibly the modem going bad.
Went to Best Buy and purchased a new modem. Installed, put into Bridge Mode,...interenet working OK.
Still,...the same situation that it stays on for 5-10 minutes, then loses it for 2 minutes.
Any ideas? Could it still be the ISP (AT&T)?
Last thought,...my neighbor uses Uverse (AT&T) for his cable/ISP and he is expierincing cable/ISP outages ramdomly. I am using DSL (AT&T) too but through my phone line. Are the two possibly related?

You need to run the modem in router mode..
I would either bridge the TC or remove it completely because you need to get exact log info from the modem.
Do isolation test.. ie remove all phones and filters and other devices from your phone line. Reboot the modem.. and wait for restart to complete.
Copy out of the modem the full line stats, sync info and even better if you can get cli access and do some deeper level stuff.. (most of the tools I use are PC only.. ie dmt tools).
Then make sure the log is turned on and giving max info and watch your connection.. if it drops without anything happening on the modem,, then the ISP is having issues.. which is possible although connection of cable and adsl is loose or non-existent.
If it drops sync keep track of how often and the line stats, Particularly the SNR..
See if you have an rf noise source in the house.. more if you are interested.
