Using Time Machine on the new MacBook after migration

Hello,
I have an external hard disk that I use for time machine. I changed my laptop from Macbook Pro 15" to Macbook Pro 13" and I used this external hard disk to migrate from my older Macbook to the new one. Now I want to use my external hard disk to back up my new computer but the problem is that I think when I try to backup it makes the backup on top of everything from my older computer. The back up on the new Macbook takes 250GBs on top of 600-700GBs. I don't think that my backup should take 900GB of space. I think 600-700GBs is from the older computer and I don't want to have an unnecessary backup on top of what I actually need...
So what should I do to get rid of that 600-700GB properly , and then set the external hard disk as the new time machine for my new Macbook ?
My OS is 10.8.4.

Exactly how did you do that?
If you used Setup Assistant when the new Mac started up (preferred), or the Migration Assistant app later on, and let it transfer Computer Settings, when the next backup started, you should have been asked if you wanted the new Mac to "inherit" the old Mac's backups. See #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for more explanation and details.
If you did something else, or answered the prompt with Create New Backup, you may be able to do that manually. It's a bit geeky, though. See #B6 in the same link.

Where are your backups? If they're on a USB drive, or a Time Capsule, you should be able to use +Setup Assistant+ on first boot. Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

You are not alone. Thousands have this problem, on various models of Macs. Short answer, it has something to do with the disk going to sleep (possibly?). You can't do anything about it and Apple won't address the problem. Maybe you should buy a time capsule. Just keep giving them money and use their proprietary equipment.

TIme Machine Error on new MacBook

When I try to run time machine, I am receiving an error message:
Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while
copying files to the backup volume
The background is this. My wife and I had been using time machine with a MacBook on an external USB drive with no problems. Then I bought a new MacBook and used time machine to transfer my own files and folders. Time machine continues to work fine for her MacBook. When I tried to use the same external drive for my new MacBook I received the error message above. Then tried to run it manually but got the same error. Then I (I now know) made a mistake and attempted to erase fix the problem by erasing all of the old time machine backups using the finder.
At first, I thought that killed the external drive, but then I connected the old Macbook and ran time machine on the old MacBook - no problem! I then ran Disk Repair verify and it found the external drive to be fine. Oddly enough, when I then connected the new Macbook, time machine did a successful full backup of the new Macbook and later one successful incremental backup on the new Macbook. Just when I thought all was fine, time machine then began generating the error again on the new MacBook (though, so far, it still works fine on the old MacBook).
Before giving up and buying another external drive to use for time machine on the new Mac, I came to this forum, saw a post about the time machine buddy widget, and so here is the message from that:
Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb
No pre-backup thinning needed: 265.9 MB requested (including padding), 343.49 GB available

I wouldn't mind re-formatting the external drive, but before I do -- is it reasonable to think that I should be able to use the same external hard drive for time machine backups for two different Macs? It sure seems as if I should be able to, but I just thought I would ask. Thanks.

How do I restore from time machine on a new macbook pro ?

My Macbook pro was stollen about 2 months ago and i'm currently debating on which Macbook retina I should get, the higher 13" or the higher 15" model. In either case, how do I go about restoring the system to which my old macbook pro was at ? i.e getting the same itunes songs files, iPhoto pictures etc.
I have read that if the version of the os x in the time machine was an earlier than that on the new machine it would cause problems. so how do can I work around that if i face this problem ?
One last question, how can I know the space needed on the new system for the restoration from the time machine?

The new machine will boot into Setup Assistant, and you'll be prompted to import the data from a Time Machine backup, among other options. A system-version mismatch is OK.

Choose Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu, provide the first computer's IP address, log in, and set it up in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.

Can both an intel and a PPC mac use time machine on the same TC?

I just got a TC and have successfully used time machine with a MBP. I was about to install Leopard on my PPC eMac in order to use time machine on the TC but I wondered if they could both use the TC hard drive as it is currently formatted.
As I recall, intel macs use journaled GUID and PPC machines use another format.
Am I deluded?

I don't think there is a problem, and I believe others have reported in these forums that they're doing it.
There is a lot of confusion in this area compounded by a number of people who say that some of the Apple KB articles are wrong/misleading.
But in this case it's more a case of it doesn't matter - here is why.....
The Time Capsule disk comes formatted, you can erase the disk via the Airport Utility. That's the closest you can come to formatting and you don't have options - so it does whatever it needs to do to get it right.
The machines being backed up don't access the Time Capsule's disk(s) directly as they do on a locally attached disk. They do it via AFP network disk protocol and the Time Capsule disk is in effect insulated from the machine being backed up.
(As an aside, it's because of this - the differences in what can be done over AFP - that the Time Capsule stores the backups in a different file format)
If you add a USB attached drive to the Time Capsule you can also erase it with the Airport Utility as above. In my case, I've attached a USB drive to my Time Capsule. I never had the Time Capsule erase it, but before attaching it I attached it locally and formatted it GUID and HFSJ and it work just fine when attached to the Time Capsule. Does it have to be formatted that way - I don't know - all I know is in this one case what I did works which doesn't prove it has to be that way.

There are instructions to reset the mac password without a CD. You set up a new admin account then you can reset the password to your original account.
It solved the problem.

I have been using a MacBook (white) for sometimes and take advantage of the Time Machine in its MacOS X to back up my files. I am planning to get myself a new MacBook Pro. However, I wonder whether I could use all the time machine backup in my external harddrive of my MacBook with the new MacBook Pro.
Is anyone can give me suggestion? How to do this if this is possible.

you can use Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) to migrate your user data and applications from the MB backup to the new MBP. You'll also have the same option during the initial computer setup. after that MBP will need to start its own backup sequence. It can't use the old MB backups except in browse mode.

Yes, someone stole my original apple id in 2009. Now i bought another iphone in late 2012 , Created another apple id due to Apple not being able to help me access my original apple id. Which now since 2 months ago someone or company, or bank stole my second apple id. My iphone 4s with Sprint has no celluar connection supossedly due to no internet that is what sprint said but I looked it up on apple and it stated that there is a cellluar block on my iphone4s.
So I guess I will have to go in person to Sprint so they can explain that to me and why I was lied to on the phone earlier. Back to my 2nd stolen apple id that I registered my macbook,airport express router, and iphone4s and apple TV. So who ever stole this apple id obviously took over all my mac products I had registered to it. Enough about that back to trying to use time machine....Everytime i do, my macbook just starts acting all screwed up. I bought a WD external drive for Mac but I believe someone must have claimed it too. Since there is 75gb on it that I can't access. Kind of like my Macbook stating I can't save or have access to the Root . That is another thing after reinstalling snow lepoard which works great until I update it. Which is a problem because everytime I update it to 10.6.8 All the permissions are changed the graphics look horrible and I get redirected so bad its not funny. The email account is a joke. Also I notice my stationary for email is in Spanish not sure why and on Iworks the document samples are also in spanish. Now I dont speak any other language except ENGLISH AND HAVE LIVED IN UNITEDSTATES MY ENTIRE LIFE. But my internet provider Fibrant which swears they are local shows it is in the UK also when i try to access my email for that account it states it is not safe , certificate is expired and someone might be trying to impersonate my server. Needless to say it is getting old. I had this same problem with Timewarner and Att except att would just remove my ethernet driver then laugh when i would call and ask what the problem was. Then later I find out when I had DSL that somehow the phone number they had listed was change to being a digit off from my DSL account which again they laughed and thought it was funny. Enough about that. I need to know how to get access to my Apple id. I gave up on the first one but the second one I did have access to until I registered all my apple products. What is up with every thing I have with a usb port being corrupt. I have also notice anywhere in town where I live my phone is English until I come home it is arabic,hebrew , spanish any language except English. Shouldn't I be safer in my home??????????????? But I am not I am safer in town or anywhere but my home. EVerything states international in my home and this has been going on since 2009.....No one can tell me why. I won't to connect my iphone to itunes to try to restore it but it states I have to update it to 10.6.8. When I do that my computer is alot worse off. Also how can I use TimeMachine with out my Macbook getting messed up? Something in my house has taken over anything with a usb port actually years ago and probably now something kept turning all my computers and phones or any electronic I owned it to a printer. I actually can't even use a printer in my home thats the funny thing. When I try to connect one when I used windows it stated I had no rights to it and couldn't use it. Since I switch to Mac not much better. When I try to print a test page it is all crooked and too small of half off the page. So it is upsetting that I can't use a printer but something keeps turning all my electronics into printers. If anyone knows how to fix this problem that would be great or to stop all this international stuff going on in my home that would be wonderful. I try to buy brand new pcs but soon as I start them up something had already taken over. This is with nothing electronic in my home on. Turn everything that a power switch off or unplugged it. Still I lost rights and access to anything in my home. Now if I am away from my home and try to use one of my laptops they look completely different and almost usable. Unfortunately I can't afford to move. I thought about it but I am still in bankruptcy and don't have the money. In the last 4 years I have not been able to reinstall in backups that I have created. Not sure why oh wait it states I have no rights to do that. My macbook I lost access to a week after I bought it and connected my iphone too. You don't know how many times I wish I had never backed my iphone 4s to my Macbook. Right after I could not log into it. Even used the disk to reset the password nope still couldn't log into it. Try to type the formula for resetting the password and nope it didn't work either.
Any suggestions would be appreciated---Need to gain access to my apple Id that would be a great start
