Using Time Machine to transfer files to new Mac

I plan on upgrading to an iMac. Can I use Time Machine carry my fies an programs over to the new machine?

What if you won't have both computers at the same time. In my situation I'm selling my machine and using the money to purchase a new machine. If I backup with time machine and then run migration assistant on the new machine can't I copy everything over to the new computer with time machine?

Use Migration Assistant on your new Mac:
    Click Continue:
On the next screen, choose your Time Machine backup disk.
Don't bother to migrate Applications unless you know they will work on your new Mac. For example, PowerPC applications won't work. Just migrate your user account which will copy all your photos, music, movies, and other documents.
Note: you will not be able to migrate the information to same account in which you are already logged in. Migration Assistant will tell you that and recommend what to do. It can migrate the information to a new account, but you will have to give it a name you might want to change later. One way around this is to create a temporary account, log in to it, and run Migration Assistant which will replace your normal account. Then, log out of the temporary account, log in to your usual one, verify everyting works as you expect, and delete the temporary one.
All this can be avoided when you set up a brand new Mac by running Setup Assistant which essentially does the same thing to create your new account, but most people are too excited to do that and elect to migrate later.

  • I uses Time Machine to transfer files and program from old to new MacBook Pro. Aperture doesn't work. Every time I open Aperture the computer need me to key in Serial number. How do I fix it.

    Hi There,
I purchased a new MacBook Pro Retina 15". Since I am using MacBook Pro and I uses Time Machine for backup files and program. Store saleman tell me I can retore my existing program and files from old MacBook Pro to new MacBook Pro computer. After files transfer it seem to be OK. But only Aperture has a problem when every time I open Aperture to edit photos, MacBook Pro ask me to key in the Aperture Serial Number that made me so inconvinent. Did any one have meet this problem and can someone teach me how to fix it, Thanks.

Either the license files were not transferred or it has to be relicensed.
Remove and then re-install aperture. On an rMBP this should take only a couple of minutes.

  • HT201250 using time machine to transfer files from mac to mac

i just bought the new iMac 27inch.  My previous Mac was Mac OSX Version 10.6.8.  I want to transfer files from my old mac to my new mac.  I learned Migration Assistant does not support this transfer because my old Mac is too old.
I want to transfer photos that are on my old mac --- such as my itunes, photos that are in iPhoto and CS 5.0, and a few other files on desk top and in documents.
    What do i do?

Not necessarily. I'd suggest downloading and installing the "combo" update. That's a combination (thus the clever name) of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

How can I use Time Machine to transfer data to hybrid 1TB Seagate SSD?

Hi V.K., was just reading your instructions for jumper25 about transferring all info to a new HD and had a question. I am in the same situation where i have bought a new 320Gb to replace the OEM 120Gb in my MBP. Everything is very straight forward from what you have posted but i only have the original Tiger 10.4.9 install DVD and I am running Leopard 10.5.5. Will I be able to use my Tiger install disk and then use my TM back up even though it Leopard? Or will I need a Leopard install disk to complete? Also is there another way around this problem if i can not use the Tiger disk such as mirroring the 120Gb disk on to my 320Gb?
Thanks in advance for your time and expertise.

  • Using Time Machine to transfer Logic and Plugins to a new Mac

    Hey there folks,
I'm about to invest in a new Mac Pro to upgrade from my Imac 2010 Quad Core Intel I7.  I just have a question regarding using time machine to restore my settings that were on my Imac to the Mac Pro...
I've heard that time machine backs up everything, but i've also heard that it might not back up things like all my Logic 3rd party plugins (Waves stuff for example).  And i will have to enter in all the serial no's again etc...does anyone know if this is the case?  Will i have to reinstall Logic 9 and all my plugins again?  Or will time machine backup the Applications and plugins so i can use them straight away?
    Many thanks!
    Sam

Google Pondini's Setup Assistant tips, you will find migrating your settings, data and apps is extremely simple.

  • Both my husband and I have our Macs backed up on Time Machine. I have a new Mac and want to download my files, etc. from Timeline to my new Mac. How do I ensure that Time Machine downloads only MY files, and not my husband's files?

OS X uses a unique identifier so there will be no problems.

  • Use Time Machine backup to create a new user

    Hi,
    my question is very simple.
    First of all my situation.
Me and my wife have decided to share the same MBP 13" unibody with Lion istalled.
Previously this MBP belonged to my wife and some days ago I replaced her HD with mine Seagate 750 Gb.
In this Hd there was all my data with Lion istalled.
As expected, when I started up the MBP 13" with the Seagate 750 Gb I found exactly all my setup and data.
After that I create a new user account (admin, just like me).
During the process I didn't have the chance to import the Time Machine backup of my wife to set this new user account.
    I was really disappointed.
I simply connected her external Hd, opened the backup file, picked up and copied the latest data on "my wife" folder, but it didn't completely worked out.
For example, her application folder is identical to mine.
So, do you know if is possible to use Time Machine in the way I expect?
    Thanks a lot!
    Simone

  • Can I use Time Machine to back files on an External Hard Drive

My MacBook Pro hard drive filled up with movies, pictures, and music, so I bought a 2TB Time Capsule.  I have a external hard drive that is about the same capacity as my MacBook hard drive. Sine the Time Capsule is by far the largest drive I have, I moved all my movies, music, and pictures to the Time Capsule and am using it as an external hard drive.  I attached a 500GB external hard drive to the Time Capsule and I use that as the backup drive for Time Machine. However, the problem I am encountering is that I can't seem to direct Time Machine to include all of my files on my Time Capsule in the back up on to the other external hard drive.
Can I use Time Machine to backup data that I store on my Time Capsule to a external hard drive?  If not, what is hte best method for backing up my files that are on my Time Capsule?
    Thanks,
    David

You need to use a different utility .. eg CCC or Chronosync to backup from the TC to yet another drive.. the problem is, that drive should be connected to the computer.. if you use a USB drive on the TC.. the file copying will be slow as slow as you will not believe.. all files are copied to the computer, then back to the TC.. it cannot copy directly to the TC..
As Neil said.. one way or another you need to use an external drive on the computer, even if you don't use it all the time.. the danger of course is not doing regular backups.. and forgetting their importance.
A true NAS will have automated backup incrementally of the files stored.. The TC is not a NAS in that sense.. it is a backup target for TM above and beyond anything else.

  • Can I use time capsule to transfer data to new computer?

Is ti possible to pull a backup or parts of backup from Time Capsule to upload to a new mac?

Sure, that is what TM is all about.
Just read the info in Pondini about restore.. he covers all the different angles.. Q14-17 here.

He has a huge amount of really useful info.. from the top menu it covers problem troubleshooting and theory of operation .. piles of stuff.

  • Can you transfer files using Time Machine back-up to a new computer?

I have an early 2006 iMac and would like to get a new one. Would I be able to copy the files that I want moved to the new computer by using my Time Machine back-up? I would only want to transfer a handful of items including my iTunes and iPhoto libraries as well as my iWork files.

You most certainly can. What you want to do is to go to System Preferences>Time Machine>Advanced> and exclude everything except the files you want to bring over. Then, plug the Time Machine Backup into the new machine and use Setup Assistant; It'll walk you through the rest.

  • Using Time Machine to migrate to a new iMac, can I keep my old backups?

I've done a lot of searching on this and I'm having trouble finding an answer. I just got a new iMac to replace my existing one. I know the process of migrating either Mac-to-Mac or from my TM backup is straightforward and fairly simple. I'm just trying to figure out if, after migrating all my data to my new Mac, what will happen to my Time Machine disk. Will it want to re-baseline the new Mac and erase my historic backup data? Or will I still have access to the older incremental backups?
    Thanks,
    Matt

If you use either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer your stuff, you'll be offered a choice.  See #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Are your files on a local disk or a Time Capsule? I was able to use a Finder drag-and-drop to copy "sparsebundle" files from one Time Capsule to another, although I had to copy them to an intermediate device and then to the final destination.
If your Time Machine files are on a directly-attached disk, you might be able to copy then with the utility SuperDuper! (exclamation point part of the name):
