Using TimeMachine to Restore a Mac with a Back Up of another Mac

I have a 24" iMac in my home office; I use TimeMachine to back it up. I have a 24" iMac at a client site whose TM back-ups were deleted... ...to save myself the stress of having to reinstall all my software, I tried to restore from the TM Back-Up of my home office machine. A great number of things failed. Adobe CS3, (which I am currently reinstalling, something I was trying to avoid), mobileMe failed for the longest time and required a great deal of fiddling...
...anyone have any idea why this all went so darn wrong? I've got most problems solved, but I'd like to know how to avoid this issue in the future. For example, why did all of my software go bad and require new installs?

V.K. is correct.
What do you mean by "all my software"?
Unless you specifically excluded your Applications folder, all your Apple apps, and almost all 3rd-party apps, if that's where you put them, should have been saved by TM, and restored. (A few 3rd-party apps are coded by their authors so TM can't save them.
If you put them anywhere else, they still should have been saved and restored, unless you specifically excluded those places.

  • Ok to use computer while restoring a drive with Disk Utility?

    Hey everyone,
I'm backing up my HD onto an external by using Disk Utility's restore function. I was wondering if it was ok for me to use my computer during this process or if it'll screw up the process. I know it'll make it go slower, but I was wondering if that was the only draw back.
    Thanks alot!

No, not is not wise. Run the program and than continue. I know this takes a while, yet wait until you go to Leopard, in which the average time is over 10 minutes. But, please do not interrupt Disk Utility.

  • TS4605 I restored my iphone with a back up on my itunes and deleted all my information on the phone...

Well, actually, it's a little more complicated than that.
It all started because out of the blue, all my contacts became unidentifiable(just numbers without any names/labels.) So I looked online for some feedback and most sites said that I should restore settings with back ups from either Itunes or icloud...so I did. I tried to restore it through my itunes because it was the most up to date with my phone, my icloud hasn't been backed up since almost a year ago! Anyways, restored the thing and it went to it's beginning feature greeting me with a "Hello" in many different languages(with a white background and simple black font.) It then asked me to choose a language, then a country/region, wifi, and then set up iphone option-which included-"set up as new iphone, restore from icloud backup, and restore from itunes backup"...I chose itunes backup, which didn't go through...or something because it kept looping from it's "connected to itunes" screen and "connect to itunes"...and restore anything(at least from what i'm seeing.) Anyways, so I idiotically decided to restore from icloud backup just to test if it would work, and it did...erasing all my current data/information and restoring something from January 2014!!! I've been trying to re-restore it back to not having contacts but having my current information on my phone because I could just manually type in all my contacts, that would be better than losing all my current information. Please help me figure out the most effective way to restore/backup my phone back to its normal state!
    info:
iphone4s-software up to date since yesterday Aug 28, 2014 (and has a back up on itunes from this date as well, which I;ve been trying for a back up format)
    Thank you,
    Payten

update:I tried using the itunes back up through a software called "iBackup" and it seemed promising...but now it's stuck on the turning on screen(black background with a white apple icon in the middle.) It won't go past this screen!!! Ahhhh please help me!

  • HT4859 How to restore my phone with a back up from iCloud?

I got a new phone from AT&T after mine got damaged and the guy at the store instead of setting up with my backup from iCloud he set up my phone as a whole new iPhone. How do I fix this? I need the old info in this new phone. Please help!

To restore your backup... open Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. The iPhone will be erased completely.
Then, set it up and when prompted... choose the option to restore the iCloud backup and follow the steps...

  • Can I use One Hard Drive for 2x Time Machine Back Ups and another partition for all my data?

    Hi Forum,
I am planning to but a RAID disc set up, but if i get a 2 disc set up, on one disc, can i have:
Time Machine back up for one Mac
Time Machine back up for 2nd Mac
Anothe partition for all my data.
then have that RAID'd to second disc?

    no one?
and if this set up was on one disc, and one partition for one TM was for the Mini that has this drive attached, would TM back up this whole drive 2x TM Partitions and 1x partitions with data on, ok? it wouldn't get confused by trying to back itself up

  • I want to migrate to new Mac. How do I also Restore the partition with old Snow Leopard?

I will install a second internal HD first, and use Time Machine Restore to it with the Migration Assistant on the new Mac's Mountain Lion.
Then I will erase the preinstalled Mountain Lion internal HD, and:
How do I now proceed to Restore to an internal partition on the new Mac, my (still) left Time Machine copy of Snow Leopard,( just a spare system partition, also for Power PC Apps)?
If I install a new Snow Leopard first from DVD and then tries the Migration Assistant in it, can it us a Mountain Lion Time Machine backup of the Snow Leopard partition? Or can Mountain Lion Migration Assistant be used for Restoring and Migrating Snow Leopard.
I do not have a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup copy of the partition left. Otherwise I could have taken that on a new installed Snow Leopard.
Thankful for all ideas, also I understand that HD Restore fully on the whole partition without using Migration Assistant will not work.
    Another question:
I hope that I can use my new Mac with the old Mac OS X licenses and transfer the new preinstalled Mac OS Mountain Lion license to the old Mac, before giving it away?
    Thanks,
    /groundliner

    Thanks!
I'm not familiar with the issue of what Mac OS new Macs manages. That puts things in another perspective. I have Lion on a fast 8 GB USB Stick, can I not boot from that either? Of Course, I may be able to put the Mountain Lion Installer on the stick, instead. It could not upgrade the stick to Mountain Lion due to not having enough space for that. But I maybe could fix that. Just wondering - I have several hard disks around, I could try to put the preinstalled Mountain Lion OS version on one of those. Best copying method?
I did not know that transfer of OS Mountain Lion was not allowed. Leopard license document mentions transfer of hardware and software to another person. So I thought the Mac App Store license was similar - bought for and on just this old iMac, that it also could be transferred to another person. Which would solve the problem for my friend who should have it!
I keep planning, but I think running old Power PC Apps maybe was no big deal.

  • "Use iTunes to restore" then "Error it's still in use"

    Hi there!
I haven a problem with my iPod nano (1st). I did the reset and wanted to restore it with iTunes, because of the message that comes up. "Use iTunes to restore". So I tried to do that and everything appeared to be fine.(The password and a progress bar etc.) Then a window pops up and says, that iTunes can't do it, because my iPod is still in use!
    What can I do?

So I don't know how I did it exactly, but my iPod is working again. And that's what I did for everyone who has the same problem.
First I went into the checking Mode. (Hold the Menu Button and the Select Button until the Apple Logo comes up, then change and press the select Button and left until there is a sound.)
Now you'r in the Checking Mode. So I checked everything in the list by chlicking the menu Button until I came down to "reset". I pressed it. After that the message "use iTunes to restore" was still there. I tried it another time to connect it to iTunes, but this times it worked and there wasn't a message "still in use".
    Now everything is fine.

  • Using timemachine backup of snow leopard system to restore on system with Lion

    Hello,
My son has a 13" MacBook Pro (2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which has a broken keyboard and a battery that won't charge.  He regularly uses timemachine to make full backups of his system.  We want to give him an old 13" MacBook Pro (2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo), which is currently running Lion Mac OS X 10.7.5.
Is it possible for him to restore his entire system from Time Machine running Snow Leopard to a MacBook Pro that has Lion?  If so, what are the best steps to have the target MacBook wiped or prepared for him to restore from his Time Machine back up, given that the systems are on different levels of OS X?
He's not wedded to keeping Snow Leopard - so can the migration occur without him having to upgrade his old broken MacBook Pro first?  Would the target Mac get "downgraded" to Snow Leopard on the restore (which would be ok too)?
Thanks in advance.  If there's any other info that will help clarify, please ask.

If he has no PPC apps that won't run on Lion, then the simplest thing to do is hook up the two machines and use the Migration Assistant to transfer his user account to the newer MBP. Once done, have him log into that account (assuming that it's an admin one), launch the Accounts prefPane, and delete the other accounts. That should do the trick.

  • Can I restore my mac from a Time Machine backup once I have used BootCamp to partition and set up Windows (without erasing all of the Windows content)?

A few months ago I partitioned my mac using BootCamp and successfully installed Windows and a few Windows-only programs (games).  I never restored my mac from the Time Machine backup and now I would really like all of my files back on my mac.  I am wondering if I insert the osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup, will that get rid of the partition I made for Windows?  Will the Windows side of my hard drive stay in tact or will everything on that side get erased when I restore the mac side from the Time Machine backup.  It was a HUUUUUUUGE pain to do the BootCamp partition and get everything Windows set up and I would really like to not have to do that all over again.  I just want to make sure that if I insert the mac osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup it will only affect the Mac partition, NOT the Windows partition.

    Hi,
Time Machine does not touch your BootCamp Windows.
It simply said ignores it completely.
Nonetheless, I am curious as to why you wanna restore a Time Machine backup.
Usually during partitioning with the BootCamp Assistant in OSX to make the Windows partition your OSX stays intact.
