Using Toast 10 with iMovie (& iDVD)

I am creating home movies (an hour or more in length w/ photos and music as well) in iMovie. I burned copies in iDVD and the quality seemed quite bad. I purchased Toast 10 hoping the quality would be better. I want to play my DVDs on our TV. How can I use iMovie and Toast together so that I can get great quality DVDs? Are my movies too long?

Hi
There are three things to this.
• 1. DVD - Has only SD-quality - There are NO HD DVDs due to it's standard
• 2. If original material is miniDV or interlaced video - then iMovie'08 & 09
are not the tools to use - they discard every second line = VHS-quality
• 3. If in iMovie previous versions (up to HD6) Share/Export to iDVD was destructive
when movie contained photos
a. Resulting DVD was heavily pixelated
b. Original movie in iMovie was harmed and - photos had to be re-imported and re-edited
To get better quality - only step is to go to Blu-Ray BUT
• Need of Blu-Ray-player, neither Mac or DVD-player can playback
• Need of BD-component to Toast™ to be able to burn
• Short movies (20 min - or at least <60 min) can be put on DVD disks - else
Need of BD-burner and BD-disks.
My collected list on
DVD-Quality
1. iDVD 08 & 09 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
• Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
2.Video from
• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
• What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
• What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
• How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise before Pro Quality)
1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
1 = US
2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario

  • Using purchased music with imovie/idvd

Apologies if this has been answered...these threads get too long to look back and back. Haven't used imovie/ idvd much since 2003-4-- so the copy protection measures on the latest version look very restrictive. Do I have this right: I make a slide show or movie via imovie-- I use music from a song purchased via the itunes store, I burn the slide show/movie to a dvd/ I give the dvd to 6 relatives, i.e. not for commercial use... and could it be that the dvd will not play with music unless I authorize their computers? In other words what exactly does that message mean than pops up that says the file won't play the music on another computer, unless it's authorized. Will it play on a burnt dvd, played on a TV?

I burn the slide show/movie to a dvd/ I give the dvd to 6 relatives, i.e. not for commercial use...
It's not legal, even though you're not charging for the DVD (copyright laws apply even when there's no commercial gain involved, hence the many suits the RIAA has filed against people sharing via Limewire and other P2P networks). Music you purchase, whether from the iTunes Store or via CD, is for your personal use and cannot be given away. If you want to create a video or slide show that you're going to give away, either obtain royalty-free music - there are a number of web sites where you can obtain such tracks - or create your own using GarageBand or a similar music creation package.

  • What is the best workflow for AVCHD with iMovie/iDVD 09?

I am recording AVCHD video with a Sony HDR-SR11. I don't have a blu-ray burner yet, so I want to create the highest quality DVD's I can from this source video using my MacBook and the software I have (iMovie 09 and iDVD 09).
Currently I am importing the video clips into iMovie 09 at the 1920x1200 setting. After creating a 16:9 movie I choose "Share to Media Browser" and export at the highest setting I see (I think 1280x720, I'm not on the MacBook at the moment).
After a long while this completes and I launch iDVD 09. I drag the movie I exported above into the theme and burn at Professional Quality. After another long wait I have my DVD but I'm quite disappointed with the video quality.
Even taking into account that DVD is not a hi-def disc format it seems like the video quality should be better. Is there a better workflow I should be using with this combination of software? Maybe some way to avoid scaling/compressing the video twice? Or is this as good as it gets with iMovie 09 and iDVD 09? I may have access to iMovie 06, if that would help.
    Thanks,
    Gerald

    3) Share to Media Browser with Best Quality
For folks like me that wonder exactly how did you do this:
(I don't know what Media Browser is yet.)
I did this: (I got some warnings - did you?)
    In iMovie:
Selected my 1280x720 "HD" video in the Project panel,
    Share->Media Browser...
    - if HD is greyed out, you already shared this size to Media Browser, go to next step,
or select "Remove from Media Browser, check HD, click Remove"
    - if HD is not greyed, but is not check marked,
select Computer icon, then uncheck Mobile, Med, and Lrg, leaving only HD checked
With HD checked, Click Publish - watch "Creating the HD movie.."
Bring up iDVD, Select Create a new project, browse for location and enter project name
If Themes at bottom right is not selected (Dark), click it
Double click a theme - for example under Revolution, choose Chapters.
At bottom right, select Media, At top right, select Movies
Under iMovie should be your iMovie project - mine says "My First Project" (I didn't name iMovie proj)
    Select your iMovie Project,
you should see a thumb of your video with dimension, size listed
(movie duration is down at bottom right.)
Drag the thumbnail onto the iDVD preview window (I don't what that window is officially called)
drop it under the theme title "Revolution Chapters" for this example
You should see a running preview of your video with the project name below it.
Important step: Project->Project Info, Under Encoding: select Best or Professional Quality
Ok re-encoding warning, close Proj Info window.
File->Burn DVD... Popup says "Warnings in Project", select Continue Burning
Insert DVD (Apple designed sharp edges on the SuperDrive on purpose?)
    I used Staples 4x DVD-RW first.
Watch process proceed till DVD is ejected...Don't believe "Time remaining: about one minute"
My DVD-R120 player-recorder would not load the disk. It played fine on iMac, a WindowsXP laptop, and a Windows XP desktop. This DVD machine only likes old 1X RW media for some reason. I wish someone made a standalone Blu-Ray recorder/player. I burned a second copy to some gold Sony 1X/2X DVD-RW media, and this disk played fine.
Picture quality is soft compared to HD material, but the moire patterns on some edges is only somewhat reduced over the Share to iDVD version. This Share to Media Browser version is acceptable for folks that won't go to Vimeo or YouTube to see my videos in HD.

  • Using Toast to burn iDVD projects

I am a new user to mac and I need basic answers. I have iDVD 5.01 and know how to create a disc image. I don't have a superdrive, but I have an external burner which came with Toast Lite software. Although some people have said that they can burn directly to their external drive from iDVD I have had no such luck. I have created the disc image, but now I don't know what to do from there. Do I need to upgrade to Toast Titanium in order to burn my image onto a dvd. I tried to burn a disc image onto a DVD-R drive but the disc would not play on neither my computer nor my DVD player. I can open the Video_TS folder on the DVD player on the computer and it plays fine, but I need to know the steps to take to burn a proper DVD. I have only had my computer for a short time and it is my first experience with a mac so I need all the help I can get.

    Hi Emily,
We kind of misuse the "disk image" a lot here. We should have said "disk image file". When you "Save As Disk Image" in iDVD, you are actually creating a "file" for the disk image. When you burn using Toast or Disk Utility, you want to select the "file", I believe the icon on the desktop you are referring to is the "mounted virtual disk" of the disk image file. Am I confusing you even more ?? As I said in my earlier post. if you use Toast, use Copy, NOT Data tab. then select disk image and select the the "disk image file", NOT the icon. Similarly, in the Apple article, use "disk image file", NOT the icon on the desktop.

  • Using MacGallery with iMovie HD

Can MacGallery be used with iMovie HD? The system requirements for iMovie 08 are too advanced for my system but I would like to use MacGallery.

Install iLife 08 and you can create "Gallery" pages using iPhoto 7.0.1.
Export your iMovie 6 Project to an appropriately sized QuickTime file, bring it into iPhoto and upload.

  • Problems with iMovie, iDVD.....

Ok I made a movie on iMovie last week and I opened it to change 1 thing and then burn it to a DVD with iDVD. Well I can't watch the movie on iMovie at all, it won't even play a second of a clip. The audio is gone and I can't add the track back it saying it's importing but it doesn't do anything. I tried to just burn the previous movie to a Dvd using iDVD and it wouldn't do it either. Said something about "couldn't render it". And when I open iDVD it says it can't find the files from iMovie when I first open iDVD. Is it the same as everyone else's problem with the recent update or is it something that I am just doing wrong. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it! Have a great day.
    Liz

That's the problem. You should have about 10% of your disk space free to use imovie. Video = 13 GB / hour.
You might want to clear out unneeded files. Cache Out X or Onyx are two free programs that will help you do that.

  • Audio Sync problem with iMovie/iDvd

    Hi guys
I am using imovie HD6. I have been working on a project for a few months now...it runs around 20 minutes.
I exported it to idvd, burnt and watched it recently - when it was around 15 minutes long and all audio was fine.
I have since added about 5 minutes. The audio plays fine when watched on my mac in imovie - however last night I burnt it to DVD using idvd and the audio is about half a second out of sync in one of the two interviews I have in the early stages on the projects. Both interviews were made using the same video camera. An interview in the new part of the project has the same problem.
I always use the same camera and have about 3 finished projects with interviews where the audio is fine.
Can anyone suggest a way to correct this problem?
    Many thanks
    Ross

Like many others, the sync issue is when taking a long clip or clips to iDVD to make a disc. The movie runs fine in the iMovie preview, but slowly goes out of sync in the final iDVD version. I used a Panasonic miniDV camcorder, 16-bit sound, SP record mode. I also tried extracting the audio in iMovie, then taking it to iDVD - no help. Then I tried breaking the movie into shorter clips (still with the audio extracted), saving it as a quicktime movie, then taking it into iDVD - no help. Although the breaking into shorter clips was done after the video was already imported. So, after all of this not working, I've now scrapped all of the imported video and started over. This time I set the import preference to automatically break the video into 9-minute clips as it's being imported. I read in the forumn that that's the "true" way to break into shorter segments - not after import. I'm just now in the process of seeing if that will help matters. Any suggestions? I'm really at a loss for ideas since I did the original recording in 16-bit sound. Everything I've read seems to indicate that 12-bit sound is the main culprit with out-of-sync issues.

  • Is anyone using Pegasus with iMovie?

I purchased Pegasus when I got my new macbook Pro, latest version purchased a few months ago. Pegasus seems fast and promising. Decided to get all my iMovie stuff and organize it onto Pegasus.
I had been using a Powermac G5 previously. Was using final cut express. Needless to say, big loss on that note. I like the speed of the new MBP + thunderbolt, but not sure I'm going to try the new FCP X yet. Seems to be too much anger over the program and I am still adjusting to a whole new way of thinking. Moving from a big desktop to a laptop is quite a move. The primary issue is storage. 750gb drive isn't much.
I use Aperture 3 also and have referenced my files. That freed up enough space for me to have about 300gb free on the MBP drive.
Here's where I'm headed for the moment with this question. As I'm consolidating and trying to understand a whole new approach to organizing and using movie files between Ap3, old iPhoto stuff, and iMovie stuff, seems that iMovie is the best overall organizer to view files on the Pegasus, internal drive (very few though), and between various programs.
#1 - If I were to purchase FCP X, does it organize and show all files between iMovie, iPhoto, and Aperture 3?
#2 - I found multiple duplicate files for the moment. Sorting through them, rejecting them, sending them to the trash. It does seems to delete them when on the hard drive and I see an increase in free space. When the files are on the Pegasus, it does seem to delete them (checked via finder), but the space increase isn't seen. For example, I got rid of one project that was about 10gb of events. No change seen on Pegasus. ??
Anyone else using a MBP for video editing that has Pegasus/TB and uses various programs (Ap3, iPhoto, iMovie)?  I'm just now really addressing this issue of trying to understand the best overall approach to organize and manage video files.
Aperture 3 solved all my photo problems, looking for something as straightforward for video purposes. Advice?
    Thanks.

#1 - If I were to purchase FCP X, does it organize and show all files between iMovie, iPhoto, and Aperture 3?
iMovie will let you organize your movies, and it will give you access to the existing organization of your photos in iPhoto and Aperture. If you have video clips stored in iPhoto or Aperture, you will have access to them, too. In general, you can organize in the App that owns them. For example you can create a photo Album in Aperture. You can see it in iMovie.
Final Cut Pro X is the same, but it can also let you import your iMovie Events and Projects. When it does this, it is non-destructive to the Events and Projects in iMovie. But, interestingly, it does not take up any more space on your Pegasus. The iMovie Events will be imported by a Hard Link (same as the way Time Machine works), so you can have both a FCP Event and an iMovie Event accessing the same clips, without taking up double space.
Having said that, going forward, you would want to import your events into FCPX to take advantage of ProRes 422, which is a superior intermediate codec than Apple Intermediate Codec, which is used in iMovie.
#2 - I found multiple duplicate files for the moment. Sorting through them, rejecting them, sending them to the trash. If the space is not freed up after you delete the clips, chances are you can free up the space by emptying your Trash. The trash keeps up with files like these in case you change your mind.

  • Using Photos in iMovie/iDVD

I haven't found anything about this so here goes....
I'm normally working in print, so I'm used to using jpeg or tiffs at 300 dpi, CMYK.
What is the best mode, size, format, etc for this?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   also have a G4 eMac and a G3 Powerbook

Each type of iMovie 6 project has its own minimum image size — minimum pixel height and width — and aspect ratio.
Try to forget everything you know about DPI, resolution, and related terms. iMovie doesn't care about them. It only cares about the pixel dimensions.
This contains a chart showing the MINIMUM sizes:

Don't use BMPs. They acquire a red shift when imported with the Ken Burns checkbox turn ON.
Don't get stung by the iMovie "jaggies" bug, described here. It will ruin your imported photos and your entire project.

  • When I try to use iSight with iMovie and it says no camera available in iMovie '08

iSight won't connect in iMovie... HELP! I found an article regarding the issue but I think the version of iMovie was different than what I have because it really did me no good.

Here are my suggestions for your iMovie '08 problem.
One of them will resolve your trouble.  Try them in
any order you like, testing camera function after
each one until you have found the one that worked.
    •  If you have not already done so, restart Mac and
try again.  A simple restart often clears up minor
        issues, including yours.
    • I am using iMovie '11 with no problems.  Some
problems have been reported with the iMovie 9.06.
However, I can't find compatibility info for ver 8.
If possible, consider updating to this latest iMovie:
        http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/
    • Try Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
suggestions. The specific "reset" procedure suggested
there for your particular MBP model often restores normal function.
(Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)
    • Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions and then
download and apply the latest Combo Update, for your Mac OS,
the current one is at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1581
(yes, use this Combo even though you are already running 10.8.2)
Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart that completes the Combo update.   Then check whether your Mac's  > Software Update... menu command tell you that other updates are needed.  If so, apply them and finish with another permissions repair.
    • If you still have problems after properly applying the Combo,
try OS X's Recovery feature http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/
to repair your hard drive or, if all else fails, reinstall a fresh copy of OS X.
    • Properly applying the latest Combo update or repairing or
reinstalling OS X can usually correct software problems.
However, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem,
there are no user serviceable parts of your webcam.
For hardware help, contact an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

As iMovie 08 can't read my video footage I'm using this application - VideoPier- to de-code it. However, when I export my footage to iMovie 08 it either goes to the 'Folder' or just now it's gone nowhere! To confuse matters even more, the footage has even gone direct to iMovie 08 as it should do but only on two rare occasions. The guy at VideoPier seems to be at to loss to know why I have this problem. Is there anyone out there who can help me.....please?

    Hi, Bengt,
+I think there is a difference between 6.0.3 and 6.0.4. Had problems with 0.3 after+
    +installing iLife08 that was OK after 6.0.4 up-grade. (PPC dG5)+
    That's why I said 'reportedly.'
I think you are correct. I, too, am suspicious of a difference, and I also downloaded version 6.0.4. I did the download as soon as I saw it on Apple's site after getting my new iMac.
I did have the prior iM6 version that I ported over from my old iMac, too. I am sure that I transferred all my old stuff before downloading 6.0.4, but I didn't run into any problems with it not installing.

  • Is there any way to use Compressor 4 with iMovie '11?

I'm a student filmmaker without the money for Final Cut Pro X. Footage from my Canon VIXIA HF S20 (AVCHD format) looks just about perfect when I import it into iMovie and when I cut together a project. However, when I finalize the project, the darker hues in my footage always come out pixelated and crappy. Whether it's 1080p or 480p, this is always the case.
I've been told that Compressor 4 does a much better job of encoding and exporting, but it's completely integrated with Final Cut Pro X and not iMovie. Is there any way I can take raw project files from iMovie and export them using Compressor? Or must I be forced to save up for Final Cut Pro X?

You should be able to use Compressor with iMovie - it's a standalone app - but, of course, there will be no "Send To" buttons. But I really doubt that it will help you much.

Finalizing means that iMovie renders your video in different sizes. Have you tried to export or "Share to Media Browser"?
