Is it better to export an iMovie project as QT and use Toast to burn a DVD for general use -  or to export iMovie project to iDVD and burn DVD from there?  Why?

Toast probably maintains better quality if you are just doing simple conversion direct from your camera straight into Toast and then to DVD. There's a lot less transcoding steps and loss of quality in that direct to DVD disk creation in Toast. However, having said that,...There's good arguments probably for both.
What I've seen promoted most often (as most people don't have Toast or aren't motivated to buy it) is to Share to Media Browser (choose the Large size option) and then from inside iDVD click the Media Button and the Movies button to find the project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser window. Drag that project into your iDVD project and burn the disk.

  • Converting dvd for iphone use

has anyone had a good experience converting dvds to use on the iphone? any software suggestions?

If you are asking about purchased DVD's - this is ilegal and cannot be discussed here.
From the terms of use of this forum:
"Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store."

  • Using my software to convert videos for another user - how do I sync it ?

I have been using a software to convert dvd for ITouch with great effect. now I want do do same for a friend - but am worried that when I syn i will loose all that's currently on her iTouch. How can I do this?

Before someone points out that we cannot discuss of even act like converting a DVD is possible because it is allegedly illegal, you are not asking that. You, by magic we assume, can do this. You are asking whether you will lose what is on her iPod.
I am not sure you can sync her iPod from your system but if you did you'd want to set it to only sync what you checked and then only check that one movie.
I wonder... is there a reason yo cannot just move the converted file from your computer to hers and let her import it?

How do you mean? I wonder if the XP version is the same as the Mac version. I think as a default Handbrake will respect the aspect ratio. It's only the quality you need to decide on.

  • I am using Toast 11 to burn dvd's. With FCP10.1.3  I could go into the FCP shared folder grab the encoded .m2v file and drag it into Toast 11 and author dvd and burn.  How can you do this with FCP 10.1.4?

BenB it creates a disc image only and it's not in .m2v. I think it saved it as an Apple Pro Res 422 format instead. The disc image file format will not allow
Toast 11 to create menus etc.  Thanks for your help.

  • Can I use toast 10 to convert AVCHD to DVCPRO HD *with timecode* ???

I have a project shot in DVCPRO HDp60 and they've now given me some AVCHD footage to work with. Following the advice around here I went out and got Toast 10 to convert the AVCHD to DVCPRO and it works but I don't get the timecode. I need to preserve the timecode because windows dubs have already been made and it'll be a reference. I have the full AVC file structure and do get proper reel# and timecode when using FCP Log&Transfer but don't want to use ProRes or AIC.
Can Toast transfer the timecode or did I rush out and buy this too soon??? And if so am I stuck with ProRes or AIC if I need timecode? And if so does the quality of AIC compare to DVCPROHDp60?
    thanks for any help

Time Machine would work, but it is the wrong tool for this job...
Easiest is to buy a new drive which is the same form-factor (2.5-inch laptop SATA drive probably) which is in an external case.  I'd go for a terabyte drive -- it's not much more expensive.
The tool you need now is a disk-copying utility -- the best ones are CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper.  One is free, the other shareware.
Then you plug the new big drive into your MBP, and it will probably mount on your desktop.  Use the cloning software to copy your internal disk to the new external disk.  This will take an hour or two, as opposed to Time Machine which takes FOREVER!
When you are done making the copy, you need to swap the two disks between the computer and the external drive case.  If you are adventurous, search YouTube for instructions on how to replace the disk drive on your computer.  Or take it to your local mac repair shop and have it done by a professional.
Ok, now you have a big new disk inside the computer, with everything exactly as it was on the 250GB disk -- except for a lot more free space!  And you have a "boot disk" in your little case, which you can put up on a shelf for safe keeping.  After awhile, you can erase your old disk and use it for off-computer storage.  Or just leave it and periodically boot from it and keep the software up-to-date.  When all **** breaks loose (software upgrade that has gone bad, etc.) you will find it an invaluable tool!

  • Converting DVD for editing in FCP

    Hello All.
I am converting DVDs in MPEG Streamclip but need help reducing the size of the exporting file.
I regularly receive DVDs of performances to edit. This specific one in question, as many are, has a video size of 720x480, the aspect ration is 4:3, format NTSC. It is Standard Definition. I use MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD, which is 999 MB. I will export via QuickTime, to some variation of Apple Pro Res, or DVC PRO...at varying percent of quality, but the file always comes out much larger than the original. Depending on clip size, it will come out at 2-20GB in size.
Does anyone have any suggestions or informantion on how to reduce the file size of the DVDs I am converting?
Thanks much for your time and assistance,
    Paolo

Most importantly, for storage space reasons,
Storage space is really cheap. If you can't get more storage then do what was previously suggested by David. Capture everything as DV/NTSC. That will give you the smallest file size for your capture
as well as because I will be uploading them to YouTube, where there are limits to the size of file you can upload.
You're not uploading your captured footage file to youtube. You need to convert to a format that youtube will accept. This file has limitations not the captured file.

  • Why can't I use/build an SD card reader for iPhone?

I have searched and searched for an SD card reader for iPhone. Apple offers the camera connection kit for iPad but for some reason they have made it incompatible with iPhone. This doesn't make a whole lot of since to me unless they are trying to drive users to buy an iPad. So far I have only found one SD card reader that claims to work on iPhone: http://www.zoommediaplus.com/index.html . If they have actually made it work with iPhone and the app is in the App Store then Apple must allow apps to transffer data from SD cards. If so I can make one myself and build the hardware to go with it since the Apple SD card reader doesn't work on iPhone.
I guess my main questions are:
Does Apple allow SD Card readers for iPhone?
         if not:
              Why don't they?
Can anyone tell me where it is documented that you can not use SD Cart readers with iPhone?
How does ZoomMediaPlus get their app in the App Store if it isn't allowed?
         if they do:
Why aren't their more SD Card readers for iPhone?
Why doesn't Apple's lightning SD Card read work with iPhone?

Of course they forbid it.  You realize that an iPhone 6+ owner cannot use the Apple Lightning SD Card Reader, don't you?  We know the support for their own SD Card Reader is built into iOS 8 because it works with iPads.  Therefore, Apple intentionally turned the support OFF for iPhones.
and it appears no one else has bothered to attempt to produce one
No, Apple forbids any third parties from producing one.  They produce them for iPads but they cannot work on iPhones, because Apple chooses not to permit such functionality (i.e., they forbid it).  Third parties produce such adapters for Android, so obviously they would want to do the same for iOS so they could sell more.
You're recommendation for AirStash is uninformed.  I've tried it and found it to be a clunky time-consuming workaround if all you want to do is import some photos from an SD card.  Using Photos in iOS to import photos is a far more elegant solution - an Apple solution that just works (if you purchased an iPad).
If it bothers you that iPhones do not work with Apple's own Lightning SD Card Reader, then I suggest you leave feedback instead of attacking those who point it out:

  • Using MPEG Streamclip to convert files for EX-1 sequence

I am trying to use MPEG Streamclip to convert mp4 and mpeg files in order to edit them in the same sequence as my EX-1 footage. What settings should I use on MPEG Streamclip that would be most appropriate for seamlessly editing the former MPEG and mp4 files with the EX-1 footage? Any thoughts on what sequence settings I should use? Right now I have it set as "XDCam Ex 1080p24 VBR" but every time I bring in files I have tried to convert using MPEG Streamclip, they need to render and I'm trying to avoid that. Thanks!

  • Using the Canopus to convert dvd and Hi8 to dv

Looking at purchasing the Canopus 100 or 110 to convert my hi8 tapes and some dvds that were taken with a sony mini-dvd unit (dont' know which one).
    Questions:
I don't need to convert everything just snips here and there. Can I do that while importing into imovie 6?
What about the dvds I was given -HS football games. Again, all I want are short segments. Will canopus allow me to pick and choose or is this controlled by imovie?
    Thanks.

I use the Canopus ADVC110 - it works great!
Yes, you can start/stop the import anywhere you want by clicking on the 'import' button at the bottom of the window.
Importing from a DVD is different ball game for which Canopus won't help - the material is already digital but in the standard mpeg2 DVD format, not intended for editing.
Double-click the icon of the DVD to open the folder.
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • What resolution to convert videos for iphone 4?

I am converting some videos to play on my iPhone 4.  I am using AVS Video converter 7 and so far I am having no problems except 1.  On my first few videos converted and uploaded to my iPhone, the quality and even file size was great, however the resolution (or aspect ratio? I'm no pro when it comes to this) is what I concider extended widescreen.  Meaning that the width fits across the width of my phone just fine, but the height is pretty small, leaving black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, as like with an older square TV viewing a widescreen movie. (and YES I am viewing it in lansdcape orientation) Tapping the zoom/fullscreen button on the screen has no effect also.  The result of this makes the movie kind of difficult to view.  The video converter has iPhone presets which sets the resolution at 640x420.  Is this the correct setting?  If not what is to make the video the full size of my screen without having to zoom or crop anything?

The specifications for movies are listed on Apple's iPhone website.
