Using TRUNCATE to free space used by CLOB/BLOB

Hi ,
Can we free the complete space used by a CLOB or BLOB by issuing a TRUNCATE command on the table containg these large objects?

Sorry about my loose terminology - yes I did mean a sparse bundle. Yes if the backup is created on a local disk, it uses ordinary folders. If it is first created over a network, then it creates a sparse bundle. having created the sparse bundle, you can then connect the disk directly for speeding up the initial backup or a major restore, but also connect remotely for routine incremental backups or minor restores.
It sounds like the type of sparse bundle created may depend on circumstances. In my case I am backing up from a laptop onto a partition on my desktop machine running Leopard 10.5.2 and when I grew the partition, although the Time Machine preference pane saw the extra space, when it came to a backup I got an error message saying there was not enough space and reporting the original size. Deleting and starting over again fixed this.
It is possible that in other circumstances a disk attached to a Time Capsule or elsewhere might get a sparse bundle with different parameters.
Incidentally, I tried copying my old backup sparse bundle onto another drive, deleting it and letting Time Machine create a new sparse bundle on my grown partition and copying the contents from the old one into the new one. Time Machine refused to work with it, so I lost my old backups.
What we need is a Time Machine Utility to manipulate these files, copy them, move backups from direct folders to sparse bundles etc. Ideally Apple would produce this, but I would be willing to pay a shareware fee for that.

  • Time Capsule full after a "Erase Free Space" using Disk Utility

    Hello,
I am facing some issues related to my Time Capsule.
Reviewing my past, I had a lot of backups on this, using Time Machine and it always worked pretty well. But after deleting some backups manually to reclaim disk space, this was not exactly freeing it.
Searching in the forum here, I saw that I could mount the backup sparsebundle image and map it into the Disk Utility. This always worked greatly too both for disk checking and reclaiming the space back.
The problem starts on the last Friday when I performed the operation again, but it started using the whole free space that I had and did not give it back.
Studying the case I found that it creates a temporary folder to store the file it creates to write the byte 0 on the disk. This file actually resides in the sparsebundle image and therefore I can see the file with 200GB, for example, in the Finder, this is a split in bands (8MB) just like the backup is. After the disk gets full, the Disk Utility should delete the file properly and give me back the space safely.
Right now my Time Capsule has 0 byte free and I can't do anything on it beyond redo the the Erase Free Space operation. When I do it, it starts writing the temporary file again and the problem repeats itself.
I know that if I backup the data and really erase the disk, I'll get it back, but this is not an option for me because I want a smart solution for this.
The only thing that changed between when it worked and now is the 10.5.6 update that I made and I'd like that it's not the root of the issue.
Is there any suggestion or general stuff I could do to fix it?
Did anybody already face the same issue?
If anyone needs more details to help me out of this, just let me know.
    Thanks and regards,
    Eduardo

Just another thing to add, I'd like a good solution for this as the redo operation from Disk Utility takes around 2 days and then it just "dies".

  • Start up and shut down is slow after erasing free space using disk utility?

I went to Disk Utility, clicked Erase, and then "Erase Free Space." When I saw that it was going to take 1 hour and 30 minutes, I tried closing disk utility. It wouldn't let me exit, so instead I pressed "Skip." But when you hover over the "Skip" button it says, "Erase all data and reformat the disk."
I'm wondering if the fact that I pressed the skip button has anything to do with my computer shutting down/starting up A LOT slower now. If so, what can I do to fix it?
    Thanks!

Just wanted to give an update. I called Apple and apparently, you shouldn't empty the free space using disk utility while you're logged in. I had to insert the Installations CD and press the "C" button while my computer restarted, and used Disk Utility from there. My start up and shut down speed still isn't exactly the way it was before, but this definitely made a difference.
Thank you to those who replied to my question!

i used the "erase free space " option in disk utility and now my imac says the disk is full and wont let me download songs. please help!

You could try repairing permissions with disk utility, I don't think you will have the option to repair the drive but you could verify it.
This may help you delete the files that DU made but did not remove when erasing the free space.

When you get your SL disk it will not have the iLife applications, that would have been on the second install disk that should have been with the computer. I forget which version of iLife you will need for SL but I think it is this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-iLife-Single-User-Mac/dp/B003XKRZES/ref=sr_1_1?ie= UTF8&qid=1409607702&sr=8-1&keywords=apple+ilife+11
A search of the forums will confirm or deny this.
As to whether a clean install will cure your problem, i.e. partition the HDD and install I would expect it to be yes, but there are no guarantees it is an old machine.

  • Can't use 7GB of free space i DO have! what a mess!

hi, im having a quite serious problem with my external HDD. it seems that i lost 7 GB of free space. i dont know how to get them back.
everything started when i tried to install Linux Debian. so i used an app called ipartition to resize my HDD partitions and let 7 GB of free space to let linux get installed. in fact i couldn't install linux (i ignore the reason) and also i cant access my disc partitions any more through ipartition. so i cant resize them any more. and those 7gb of free space are apparently lost by now. i dont know if its something with ipartition app or there is another solution to this. i also use disk studio but it just re partition volumes. but it doesn't show free space on the HDD.
any clue? please i need to recover those GBs!!!!

    For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />

Your free space hasn't gone anywhere. This is simply the initial result of the process. However, your free space should be there once you need to use it.

  • ITunes bug using "Automatically fill free space with songs"

Using iTunes 10.1.0.54 on Windows 7 I've encountered an issue when using the "Automatically fill free space with songs" option with any of my iPod devices.
The first time I synchronized my iPod using this option everything worked as expected - all the music from my selected playlists was transfered to the device as well as "random" music to fill the remaining space.
However once I changed the content of the selected playlists and tried to synchronize the device again I got an over capacity warning since the selected music list was now larger than before.
The only way to properly get my iPod to sync again was to deselect the "Automatically fill free space with songs" option, sync (removing all the extra songs), then re-enable the auto fill option and sync again.
From a usability point of view this shouldn't be the expected behaviour. When the selected music set grows iTunes should randomly deselect music from the "auto fill" list on the iPod to allow the user to successfully sync their device.
Is this really the intended behaviour from Apple or is this a bug in iTunes?

you can report bugs to Apple via this site.

  • Can't partition free space using Disk Utility

So something went wrong when I tried to bootcamp.
    Now the situation is following:
    1) I can't install Windows using USB stick, it says that the free space is in GPT;
    2) I can't partition the free space with Disk Utility, tryied it also with recovery mode, the apply button is clickable and active, but it does nothing, it just stays like so and when I exit from Disk Utility it asks if I want to quit without applying but it doesn't work.
So basically I have wasted 20GB of space and can't do anything with it.
I don't want to format the hole disk, are there any other workarounds without need to reinstall OSX?
    I have MacBook Pro 13" Retina (late 2013), 128GB SSD, 8GB ram.

  • Erasing free space using disk utility

Disk utility does not always work when trying to erase free space...  I have 50 gigs of free space that I can not retrieve...   I do not want to have erase my entire SSD like I did a month ago to clean up deleted files...

In Dec I did a complete re-install of Lion, because I was running out of SSD storage...
The other day, the Mac Air was acting strange, so I checked the SSD drive and found there was only 25 free gigs left...  60 gigs had disappeared in 5 weeks...
Here is where the 60 gigs went...
    1.  Added 9 gigs for new pictures
    2.  IPOD/iPhone Photo Cache added 13 gigs (It was emptied during the Lion re-install)
    3.  Time Machine, kept making hourly back-ups on the SSD, added 38 gigs (Turn off Time Machine & 38 gigs returned as free space)
Thanks to those who suggested I use Omni Desk Sweeper, which shows you what your files sizes are by each file & to turn off the Time Machine...

  • Help please - message after using the Erase Free Space function in Disk Ut

Please help. I've been using my Mac Mini for 6 months and decided I wanted to securely erase previously deleted files, and found the Erase Free Space facility in Disk Utilities. So I chose the option "7-pass Erase of deleted files", and left my Mac Mini to do its business.
At the end, I got the message that my startup disk is full, but ignored that message because I understand that's normal when free space has been deleted.
After doing a Restart, things seem to be running smoothly, but I have a Warning message which reads
Warning. The following disk images failed to mount:
    Image: EFTFile1.sparseimage Reason: corrupt image.
What does this mean, please, and what do I have to do, if anything?
I'm completely new to this, so please explain clearly.
    Thanks everyone!!

Hi again, i've resolved the problem, thanks. It was my inexperience that was helping confuse the issue.
Sorry to have taken your time. Thanks again for your input.

  • Help! Used "Secure Delete Free Space" on Spring Cleaning App...

Okay, so I don't know a whole lot about computers or anything. Someone told me to use Spring Cleaning to delete free space on my macbook pro because that would make my computer more secure and wouldn't allow any deleted files to be recovered. So I did, and now I have zero KB left of space. I guess I should have known that "delete free space" literally meant delete all of your free space, but why would anyone tell me to do that? Now I have no room to add anything to my computer. So I need to know how to reverse this, and if I can't, what my options are other than get an external hard drive and suck it up.

    Hello c:
I do not like third-party applications that affect data or system files - for a variety of reasonably good reasons.
For future reference, use disk utility to do what you wanted to accomplish. You simply highlight your disk, click on erase, and then click on _erase free space._

  • Problem with ytdump-200.6.1.1-1377716466. It is a, "Yahoo crash log", uses up all free space on C: drive

    Your Question:
Ever since my firefox was updated to be more compatible with Yahoo I have a terrible problem with ytdump-200.6.1.1-1377716466. It is a, "Yahoo crash log dump", that fills up all the free space on my C: drive drive, no matter when and how many times I erase it, and no matter what I remove from the C: drive.

What was involved in making Firefox more compatible with Yahoo? Assuming that the "yt" part stands for Yahoo Toolbar, you could disable that temporarily to see whether that resolves the issue.
    Try here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
Disable the Yahoo toolbar(s) and if a link appears to restart Firefox, click that as the last step.
Note: if you have any unsubmitted forms you are working on, it's probably best to finish your work before restarting Firefox.

  • Very elementary doubt, but... can i use the rest free space of Airport Time Capsule as a Hard Drive (copy and paste files freely, from my MacAir SSD to the Time Capsule), besides use it with Time Machine at the same time?

Cant find it clearly in tutorials...

You can do it.. should you do it is another question.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. Think this out very clearly.. how and to where are you going to backup your files. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
