Using two Computers to update one Itunes File on network harddrive

How do I get the itunes files on my buffalo network server 250 gigs) to populate itunes on both computers (not at the same time)? I started to add songs to the server through itunes on my laptop (15 gigs so far). I can find, see and play the music on the desktop. However, Itunes on the desktop is not populated with the music I added with the laptop. I have used the advanced menu on desktop itunes to point to the itune files.

Here's the deal:
Up until a month ago, I'd have told you that it's impossible. However, iTunes 7 added a new feature which I have not used, but it seems to be what you're looking for.
First, you're going to have to make a common library file. This may require making a new library from, I don't know, because I haven't done it. You can just try moving the library file (it's iTunes Library.itl, and can be found in My Music\iTunes) to the NAS.
Now, when you start iTunes, hold shift until a dialog box appears and asks you which library to use. Point to the one on the NAS. If that library doesn't work (because it was moved) you may hve to go with the option to make a new one.
Do this from both computers, and everything should work.
A few notes:
I doubt you can run them both at the same time.
There are other things I've forgotten. I'm sure.
Back up. Always.
Ask any other questions. Even though I haven't used this feature, I'm sure some people have.

You can sync as many iphones/ipod/ipads as you like to one computer.
Each is different and is recognized as such

  • Using two apple IDs on one Itunes account

I recently purchases a ipad for my 86 year old mother. I want to also add music to it that I have cd's for. She now has an Apple ID of her own and I have my own Apple ID. The problem is this, when I log out of my itunes account and log in as her, I can still see all my music library as her. How do I see NOTHING under her account, until I actually load in music for her. Then can i sync her ipad using my OWN Mac and have it appear on her ipad? I have not enabled home sharing at all. Thank you!

Phil, I am confused about your statement/answer:
""Is it possible to create two Apple IDs on one iTunes account?"
    Yes.  I have two."
    Apple says:
"An Apple ID is a user name you use for everything you do with Apple. Creating an account for an Apple service, such as the iTunes Store or the App Store, creates an Apple ID. Apple ID allows you to access other Apple services. You don't have to create a new account for each service—just use your Apple ID."
Thus an Apple ID is the same as the iTunes account.
Did you mean can yu use more than one Apple ID on one iPod because yuo know the answr is yes.
Or have I go something wrong?

  • Details needed for using two hard drives with one iTunes library

I posted this under the iTunes section but now that I think of it, it's more of an Apple TV question since I'm only concerned about how it affects my 2 ATVs.
I have a MacMini(G4) that acts as a media server for our 2 ATVs. I use one library on the Mini which has been using an external 750GB drive. However, I'm at nearly 95% capacity now and want to invest in another external drive and use both. So the question I posted on the iTunes section was...
"With far too much content in iTunes (mostly for the Apple TVs) and after reading numerous posts about using external hard drives with iTunes I'm convinced that using two external drives is my best solution.
However, I did want to understand a bit more about the details of how iTunes will manage or at least keep track of, the media. Specifically, I'm thinking of the case were I add a movie to iTunes library (of course it will not copy the file into the iTunes folder).
What will occur if I later change any of the tags for the movie (e.g., name, genre, year, etc.). Will iTunes update this information and then update the Apple TVs once they resync with the iTunes library?"
So for the very knowledgeable folks here on the ATV section, what exactly does iTunes do in this case? Will my genres be updated correctly if I change something even though the content is not copied to the iTunes folder?

If you want to use two external drives to store your itunes content, there are a couple of ways you could go about it.
You could choose to have just movies (for example) on one HDD and everything else on the other. You could further choose to have your itunes music folder on one HDD and have all content copied to it by default. When it comes to movies (in this example) you can place these on your second HDD and add them to itunes by using OPT-drag, which will temporarily disable itunes from copying the file to your itunes library.
You could also entirely disable disable itunes copying files to your itunes music folder from the itunes preferences and manually manage all your content.
Personally I'd just buy a 2 TB (for example) drive and ebay your old drive once you have moved everything from it to your new one.

  • Using two computers to make one fast one?

Is it possible to use two imacs linked together to make one fast computer? Like a master/slave computer set up? If so how?

Although I do not use it, XGrid looks to do what you want.
It is a free download and you can get it here.

  • Using two Nike+ Nanos and one iTunes Library

    Hi,
I have a Nike+ account and a nano. I am considering buying my wife a Nike+ kit to go with her nano.
We share a single iTunes library.
Can we use two nanos with different Nike+ accounts from the same iTunes account? And both upload our runs to our own accounts without confusion?

You can always setup seperate accounts on your Mac for you & your wife & place the library in /Users/Shared/ as an alternative. However, as others have posted, the settings for Nike+ are per iPod.

  • Want to use two computers to update my one account

I do all of my editing on my Mini, however i would like to also have the opportunity to make changes to my web site on the go using my laptop. Is there any way to achive this.
    Thanks

The file you need to move around from computer to computer is the Domain file. You can find this file at the following default location...
    harddrive/Users/Library/Application Support/iWeb...
You need to have this on the particular computer you want to edit from.
Best case: Put it on a USB flash drive, plug it in to your laptop when you want to edit from it and double click on the DOmain file to launch iweb on your laptop. (Note: you must have at least iWeb 1.1 to do this). Then when you get back to your mac mini, be sure and copy the domain file to replace the one in the default location so that you are uptodate.

  • Two computers/users. One iTunes account. Different question.

My husband and I share an iTunes account but 90% of the tunes in each of our libraries are specific to our own computers and we'd like to keep it that way. I set up iTunes match via mine, if I set it up on his (using the same ITunes store account) will the combined tunes show up on both computers? We wouldn't want that. They can live together in the Cloud, but I'd like the iTunes libraries to stay the same/

By logging into the same iTunes account and enabling iTunes Match the music from both computers will be visible on both. However, I think that you can hide the items in the cloud by pulling down View > Hide Cloud Purchases. I'm not sure if that menu command applies to iTunes Match, though.

  • How do I use two computers in logic at the same time?

I would like to find out how to make two computers work in the same project, both having logic installed.

    No that is not possible.
You talk about a synchronized system. iCloud is doing something similar to work on the same document on different computers and have them synchronized. However that creates a problem if two computers (users) updating the same file which creates a conflict because the computer doesn't know which file to update wiht what.
However, Logic has a very easy feature to import tracks from one Project to another. It is the Browser window.
Mount each other's computer so you have access to the individual Project on each other's computer
Open the Browser window in Logic in your Project and navigate to to your friends Project
Select that Project and pick any Track (optional: content, plugin, settings, etc)
If you want to update only the data, just select that track and only its content and choose overwrite existing Track.
Play around a bit and you will see that it is an amazing (often overlooked and underrated) feature.
    Hope that helps

  • HT4972 Can you have two iPhones to the one iTunes account? I am overseas and using the old iPhone 4 here, but also have a current iPhone 5.

I have two iPhones, a 5 which I currently use and an old 4 which I use as a second phone as I am overseas. I have connected both to iTunes. Does this cause any problems have two phones on the one iTune account, as far as updates, etc goes?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It won't cause any problem. Moreover, you will be able to share the purchases between both phones and have the same information by using iCloud, so you don't lose anything
