Using Two Drives On Macpro Simultaneously

I have a couple of Pioneer 115D drives in my Macpro and have recently tried to get them to burn together as a time saver. All I managed to do was get the bottom drive to be shown as the top one and the other one the bottom ... ! Anyone have any ideas as to whether such a thought can be made to work ?

Ron,
I am afraid I don't understand your question to me here. I don't use iDVD at all and I don't know what "Utility app" is. I use my two burners for putting large volumes of data onto DVD and BD discs simultaneously after a big job. Duplicate copies of Toast app works well for this, I don't know whether duplicate copies of iDVD would do the same, if that is what you are asking. I'll help more if I can.
I did have a problem when I added the blu ray with upper and lower. I could only get the correct matching by putting the blu ray in the lower whereas I wanted it in the upper originally. But the blu ray is SATA so may not be relevant to your situation.

  • How to set up my mac mini server to use two drives seamlessly?

I have a mid 2010 mac mini server, with OSX Lion installed. It has dual 500gb hard drives.
I've been moving all my important files to it, and I've always assumed that once I filled one disc, it would seamlessly transfer over to the other and continue backing up. This does not seem to be the case.
I'm at roughly 495gb of data, and when I try to move a 10gb file onto my server, it tells me that I don't have enough disc space to continue the operation.
What can I do to make use of both drives?
    -Thanks

It sounds like what you're asking for is to have the two drives in a RAID 0, where the two 500 Gb drives look like a single 1 Tb drive. I'm not sure the exact procedure for installing RAID 0 on a mini's internal drives, but the process would involve backing up, reconfiguring for RAID (which destroys all data,) restoring data from the backup, and more risk than I would personally find acceptable. I'd expect to lose a full day with the backup and restore steps. I can guarantee, there will be pain.
Instead, I'd suggest looking at what's consuming the 500Gb, and seeing if there are particular folders that can be moved. For example, a shared folder is pretty easy. Copy it over. In file sharing setup, edit the share to point to the new location. Make sure remote users disconnect, and reconnect to the "new" share. When you're happy there is no data loss, delete the old location.
User's home directories can also move, but the process has a few more steps, and depends on how the accounts are built (local vs. OD)
If the majority of the data is in a single "your backup files" folder, shared or otherwise, then I would just set up a second folder on the second drive and write to it, leaving the first alone. If it is truly a backup, then you could make the first folder read-only at this point for extra protection. If you go the 2 folder route, keep in mind your boot drive is operating with 1% free space, I like my drives to have at least 15% free, and OS drives more like 25% (you'll find some range in recommended %-free, but most will agree 1% is too little) so move SOME stuff to the new folder, before closing the old.

  • Using two drives as source/target for copying a disk?

    Greetings,
Please bear with what is probably a stupid question from a pc ship-jumper Mac newbie.
I ordered my new Mac Pro with two Pioneer optical drives in order to, as Apple says, "streamline disk burning".
I learned that Toast is the gold standard for disk burning on Macs, so I bought the Titanium version.
I assumed it would be straightforward to use the top drive as the Source for a burn and the bottom drive as the Target.
But I can't find any way to accomplish this, either with Toast or with Apple's own Disk Utility.
It always creates a disk image and then wants a blank disk to be inserted into the same drive.
Am I overlooking something really simple here? I'm not sure why there would be any need for two drives if having a source/target arrangement is not possible, or why Apple would say having two drives "streamlines" things.
Thanks in advance for any help or insight you can provide.
    - Gregg

I told you it was a stupid question.
I figured out that in Toast, you have to go ahead and click the 'Record' button, then you get a chance to select the second drive as the target. It was a little confusing because both drives have the same name. The difference is the drive with the source disk in it will appear as not writeable.
Hopefully this post will help some other idiot.

  • TM backup: can I use two drives to back up data on two other drives?

    Hi to all!
    I have with me a 1 TB/ Thunderbolt EHD [external hard drive], a Lacie 2 TB/FW, EHD, a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD, a Seagate 3 TB/ 2 USB, EHD and [to be purchased] a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD.
I mainly use my Mac for making HD videos using FCPX.
I am planning to use these drives in the following manner as indicated by the table below:

    USAGE:
    editing videos, one
    active project at a time
    mainly for camera
    archives, music files,
    FCP events, projects
    and exported movies
    same as the LaCie,
    as a backup of data
    intend to have 2
    partitions of 1.5 TB each;
    one partition for personal
    data and the other partition
to back up data on the
    Thunderbolt [current project]
    intend to use this for
    TM back up of my
    Mac's internal HD
    applications, documents etc.
    backed up by:
    one partition of 'd'
    by the 2 TB Seagate
    backup 'e'
I would like to know whether I could do these things:
Can I use the TM backup feature in this manner of using 2 separate drive/partition [e/d] to back up data on 2 other drives [f and a]?
Further, I am manually copying files from 'b' drive to 'c' drive; without incurring further expense, can I ensure that whatever I write onto the LaCie [b] gets copied to the 'c' drive automatically?
Any thoughts, suggestions and instructions in these matters are welcome.

    and completed movies
    Same as the LaCie,
    as it's backup
    To be used as TM
    backup for my Mac's
    internal and also to
    the scratch disk.
    Planning to have it in
    2 partitions: to have
    a 'secondary' copy of
    my Mac's IHD on one
    partition and to have
    personal 'net retrievable'
    data on the other partition.
    'MY
    OBSERVATIONS'
    my projects are usually
    less than 10 minutes
    and hence I trust that
work would be fast and in
    case of drive failure, I
    would be losing only
    one project.
    I am importing camera footage
    primarily into this drive and
    being FW, data transfer is
    fast.
    Am manually copying
    files from the LaCie
    onto this.
    This drive is not a
    brand new one, but
    has been given to me
    by the company's
    agent as a replacement
to my earlier 2 TB drive
    which had failed.Hope
    this also will not fail!
    Because of the 'uncertain'
    performance of the
    3 TB Seagate, I intend
to have a copy of my
    Mac's IHD in one
partition. I intend to place only
    such data upon the other
partition that I will not be
    greatly affected should the
    drive fail.
If you can analyse this plan and give your insight upon this matter, I will be immensely happy.
Further, if this proposed use of the 3 TB Seagate is okay with you, I need to know how to remove the Thunderbolt from doing it's temporary role of TM backup and how to coronate the 3TB Seagate as its successor.
FYI, I would be switching off TM from functioning whenever I am editing video; I would be switching it on only after a full editing session.
Another question on my mind is this: do I need to partition the drive 'e' at all?

  • How can I use two analog output channels simultaneously?

I am using PCI6110 DAQ card. I want to run two separate VIs on one computer. Each VI output a waveform to one analog output channel. How can I do this simultaneously without interfering each other?
    Thanks

    Hi Stephen,
This can NOT be done with two seperate VI's.
The issue is in the hardware/driver.
Your hardware has a clock that controls how fast updates to the AO occur. That clock can only have one value at a time. I will let your contemplate the complications that come up with two different clock settings being active at the same time (see below).
So how do you work around this complication?
You will have to develop a single VI that OWNs both output channels. That VI will have to accept start, stop, configure, etc commands from the two clients (what you will have to convert your existing VI's into). If you decide to place a restriction on the services you provide to the clients along the line of "only one sample rate at a time" you will be making your li
    fe much easier.
If I was contracted by a customer to do what you have asked, I would try to combine the two existing VI's into one or simply buy a second 6110 and avoid all of the hassles. Both of these approaches would end up saving the customer money in the long run while freeing them of any restrictions that where established in order to develop the "server".
    I hope this helps,

  • Can I use two Windows User Accounts simultaneously?

    Hi
I use my pc for two businesses. Presently I have two user accounts that I have to switch bewteen by logging off each time - disconnecting my broadband.
Is it possible to run the two accounts simultaneously?
    Regards,
    Grant Basson
    [email protected]

    Hi Grant,
You can use the Windows shortcut to have two or more user account active at the same time. The short cut for this is to press and hold the 'Windows' key on your keyboard and also press the 'L' key. This will then cause the Windows log-on screen to be displayed but without logging off the first user account.

We have two web java-based applications, and each one requires one specific version of java (1.4.1_03 and 1.3.1_07).

    Any help is welcome.....

  • Does the NMH300 report broken harddrive whe using two drives in raid 1?

    Dear Support,
I´m about to purchase a NMH300 and wonder if that unit will report if one drive brakes down in a raid 1 setup?
If so, how do you find out? Is there a visual indication on the actual unit or som kind of error message in software?
    Thanks
    Kind regards
    Tom

Check out the Linksys articles below, if RAID 1 is not running properly then the RAID status would indicate "degraded" and disk health status "failed".

  • Use two Time Machine Drives with different settings?

Hello everybody, is it possible to use time machine with two drives and use different settings for each drive?
For example: at home I currently have two external LaCie d2 quadra drives. My plan is to leave one at home, and take one to Uni. On the drive which I have at home, I have backups of a secont parttion of the drive which I am taking to Uni, which contains some important files (about 500 GB). Is it possible to have a backup of that data partiton on the drive which I'm leaving at home, but not on the drive which I'm taking to uni?
I know that I can set up two drives to work simultaneously, but can I say to exclude folder A on drive A, but not on drive B?
    Thanks a lot in advance

Thanks for the fast reply. II'll try to make things clearer. I have two drives (let's call them drive A and B). Drive A has one partition, and is my primary back up drive. Drive B has two partitions (one with files and one for Time Machine). Currently, the files partition of Drive B is being backed up to Drive A. When I connect drive B, Time machine asks me if I want to replace the existing drive, or use both. Using both is what I want. However, I don't need Drive B to back up the files from it's second partition, as that would not make any sense; I do, however, want drive A to back up the data partition from drive B. I guess the easiest way is to manually change the settings, or just live with a larger backup....

  • Using DVI and VGA monitor simultaneously on MacPro

using DVI and VGA monitor simultaneously on MacPro!
2008 MacPro - running the latest Yosemite
for the last few years, I've had two monitors attached - both DVI monitors in the DVI port.
today, one of the two monitors died on me!  Just wouldn't turn on.
As it happens, I also have an older VGA monitor.  So, this evening I bought a VGA-to-DVI adaptor.
when I plugged it in, something buggy happened ... the image was fine at the first, but then for a while, the active application started flashing off & on, it flashed between the image of the APP and a white panel... just the active APP.  the background apps looked fine.
now it seems to have stopped .. .but I fear it may come back?
no idea what may be causing it!  is it NOT a good idea to use DVI and VGA monitors simultaneously on a 2008 MacPro?
Hope it doesn't come back.  right now I'm in safe start-up mode, I'll see what happens when I run normal start-up mode tom'w morning.
thanks for any feedback / insight!

My assistant and I are using two Lightrooms (i.e. two serial numbers) and need to share between our two computers. I provide originals to her onto a flash drive. She tags them and returns them to me. I then copy the photos from her flash drive onto my computer and load them in my LR. The photos appear but witthout any editing or tagging. We need to be able to have her working on the photos on her computer with her copy of LR and me on my computer with my version of LR being able to access what is already tagged and given back to me. This seems hard. We need advice on if it is at all possible to have two computers simultaneously working on LR . I bought her her own version because I was told at the time of purchasing that that was the only way to share. Please advise urgently! Thanks.

Sounds like your assistant isn't instructing Lightroom to write the tagging and editing to the files themselves, so wehn the files return to you, they don't have editing and tagging information. She need to select the photos in Lightroom and then Ctrl-S (Cmd-S on Mac). Or alternatively turn on the option to autmoatically write this information to the files.
If you are using RAW photos, then this information will be written to a sidecar XMP file, and your assistant must provide you with the sidecar file. If these photos are not RAW photos, then the information is written directly into the photo file itself.
Lightroom wasn't designed to be a multi-user program, and so it is truly not possible to have two people working on the same catalog at once. The way you are doing things, as modified above, is probably the way to go.
As an alternative, you can transfer (portions of) catalogs as well as photos back and forth and then all of these issues disappear, but a catalog might be rather large for a flash drive (or maybe not, it depends)

  • Problems with Pages and Numbers using iCloud Drive on early 2008 MacPro, Yosemite

One of my computers, an early 2008 MacPro running Yosemite, will NOT save Pages or Numbers documents to iCloud Drive from within those applications.  I see the little iCloud Drive error badge next to the file name in Finder after I try to save.  However, on the SAME computer I can save Pages and Numbers documents to a local drive (e.g., to my Desktop) and then use the Finder to drag the documents to iCloud Drive successfully.  Another computer, a MacBook Pro running Yosemite, has no problems using iCloud Drive to create, edit and then save Pages and Numbers documents stored on iCloud Drive.  I have tried "turning off" iCloud Drive for Pages and Numbers in System Preferences on the Mac Pro and then turning it back on to no effect.  I have also logged out of iCloud Drive on all of my devices (which include two iOS devices) and then logging back in to ensure that I'm using the same login id on all devices, again with no apparent change.
Any suggestions for my next steps in attempting to solve this issue?  Is there any way to get more information about precisely what type of error is occurring?  Hovering over the badge only shows "Error".
    Thanks in advance.
    Jon

Found a solution, but it is odd:
On the 2008 Mac Pro, I UNCHECK the boxes beside Pages and Numbers in System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Options. Now Pages and Numbers will properly save edited documents to the appropriate folders on iCloud Drive.
    Go figure ...
Hope that this helps someone else.

  • Details needed for using two hard drives with one iTunes library

I posted this under the iTunes section but now that I think of it, it's more of an Apple TV question since I'm only concerned about how it affects my 2 ATVs.
I have a MacMini(G4) that acts as a media server for our 2 ATVs. I use one library on the Mini which has been using an external 750GB drive. However, I'm at nearly 95% capacity now and want to invest in another external drive and use both. So the question I posted on the iTunes section was...
"With far too much content in iTunes (mostly for the Apple TVs) and after reading numerous posts about using external hard drives with iTunes I'm convinced that using two external drives is my best solution.
However, I did want to understand a bit more about the details of how iTunes will manage or at least keep track of, the media. Specifically, I'm thinking of the case were I add a movie to iTunes library (of course it will not copy the file into the iTunes folder).
What will occur if I later change any of the tags for the movie (e.g., name, genre, year, etc.). Will iTunes update this information and then update the Apple TVs once they resync with the iTunes library?"
So for the very knowledgeable folks here on the ATV section, what exactly does iTunes do in this case? Will my genres be updated correctly if I change something even though the content is not copied to the iTunes folder?

If you want to use two external drives to store your itunes content, there are a couple of ways you could go about it.
You could choose to have just movies (for example) on one HDD and everything else on the other. You could further choose to have your itunes music folder on one HDD and have all content copied to it by default. When it comes to movies (in this example) you can place these on your second HDD and add them to itunes by using OPT-drag, which will temporarily disable itunes from copying the file to your itunes library.
You could also entirely disable disable itunes copying files to your itunes music folder from the itunes preferences and manually manage all your content.
Personally I'd just buy a 2 TB (for example) drive and ebay your old drive once you have moved everything from it to your new one.
