Using two seperate operating systems on a Mac, and a smart-phone to better integrated the flows!

I am considering to get a new Mac.
In that I want to be able to use two seperate operating systems. The Mac operating system and maybe either a windows or linux or an other useful and functional alternative!
The reason for this is, that I have several laptops incl. an iPad. I have concluded that iPad isnt that useful for my needs till now, its not very functional for my needs. I am also going to upgrade my smart mobile still considering functional alternatives (would like to hear yoru thoughts about this as well)!
I want to integrate them into one machine only and utilize cloud  and / or an external Disk, and be better able to use useful apps and software that are not available on either one of the systems on their own my own system!
Usage will be both for biz and private, but at the end usefulness, and functionality will play a big part in my final decision!
Do you think this is practical, useful and cost effective way doing it the way I want to do?

My reason for wanting to have windows on my Mac is to be able to utilize, some applications that are not available for Mac OS!
In the past I raised few points relating to that, and wasnt able locate details to consider to have only a Mac system. Thats why I had to have few laptops to handle all! I got myself an iPad(1) but again it didnt met the exact needs that I have!
Thats why I am going to integrate all in one new system(Mac), and exchange and process while on the road via smartphone or something that is between a smartphone and tablet!
As to smartphones; I hear positive notes on iPhone, but seems to have some issues with its antena, the new Moterola seems great to exchange files anywhere, and the new Samsung Galaxy, very advanced. However what I lack at this stage is user experiences to see if any of them can meet my needs, and what the best combination could be for efficiency, speed and value for money(laptop, operating sytem, smartphone).
I am tired of crashes, frozen screens, or not able to open files or pics because they are not compatible in some ways! I try to maintain, clean and update my systems, but some stuff does comes in between despite all!
Anyhow, thank you for your support, I will try to do some reading on the keywords you used, I might get back to you for some more leads!
Thank you once again!:)

  • Two Operating Systems on One Mac

The Avid software is really finicky (more so than fcp) about what OS you're running with it. We have the opportunity to get the avid media composer software version for real cheap (relatively), but I hesitate because it will mean that I can't upgrade my OS when I want to, without running the risk of breaking Avid or having to shell out more cash to get Avid running again.
So, is it possible to have 2 different operating systems on one mac? So, for the Avid system, I'll just have the perfect OS for that version of Avid (currently OS 10.4.9), and basically nothing else except necessary software for editing. And for the 2nd system, I'd have FCP and whatever OS works best for that? Would I need 2 physical internal hard drives for that work, and then just set my startup disk as needed, depending on which editing software I want to use?

Here's the link to Apple's free Boot Camp, if you want to download and try that out:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
You'll then need a copy of MS Windows to install.
    Hope that helps

  • This is going to sound dumb but I just got a call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft Windows tech dept. Apparently something malicious attacking my computer.  I hung up because I don't believe Mac uses Microsoft Window Operating System - right?

This is going to sound dumb but I just got a call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft Windows tech dept. Apparently something malicious attacking my computer.  I hung up because Mac doesn't use Microsoft Window Operating System - right?  I have Mac OS X.  I have loaded Microsoft Office 2011.  Can that allow something malicious or is this guy a scammer and I was right to hang up???

Actually you can install Windows on your MBP via Bootcamp.
You should have kept the individual on the phone for as long as you can tolerate.  The time he wastes with you is time he cannot spend scamming an innocent victim.
You can always politely ask the caller to hold while you 'answer the front door' or the like and just set down the phone and go about your business.  The caller will eventually hang up.
But your analysis was 100% correct.
    Ciao.

  • I downloaded microsoft office to my MBP and my question is how do i get the right file or operating system to open it and so that i can use it?

i downloaded microsoft office to my MBP and my question is how do i get the right file or operating system to open it and so that i can use it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
There are two Office versions: Office for Windows, and Office for Mac.
I suspect that you have downloaded Office for Windows, and you can use it if you install Windows, but a cheaper and easiest way to use Office is to use Office for Mac, so you won't have to install Windows. See > http://www.microsoft.com/mac

  • Using firewire as operating system

I have spent at least 2 hours looking for information on the Apple website for how to use the firewire as an operating system and have not found what I need ... so I'll try posting a message here.
I am trying to do two things:
    a. install an operating system onto some eMacs and iMacs from a Firewire drive.
    b. put an operating system on the firewire drive, formatted in such a way, that it can be installed on the eMac or iMac it is connected to.
I have the firewire drive partitioned into 5 partitions, each about 20GB, except the last partition which is bigger.
I know (b) has to be done prior to (a), but (a) is the reason for needing (b).
Can anyone point me to or provide a step-by-step description of how to do either (a) or (b)?

I assume you have formatted each partition Mac OS Extended. The process is quite simple. You have two options. The first option is to clone an installer disc to each partition on the Firewire drive. The second is to clone an installed system from an existing eMac and iMac to each of the Firewire drive partitions. I'll assume you want to do the former. In the following procedure the Firewire drive pastition is the "Destination" volume. The "Source" volume will be the OS X Installer Disc One which should be inserted into the optical drive and mounted on the Desktop.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
Repeat the above using the second disc if there is one but use a different partition on the Firewire drive as the "Destination." You will use one partition for Installer Disc One and another partition for Installer Disc Two.
Do the same for the other model using the installer discs required specifically for that model.
I would test each Disc One partition to be sure they will boot each computer, respectively.

  • Can i run multiple osx operating systems on my mac book pro?

hello, i was wondering if i can run multiple osx operating systems on my mac book pro? i currently have the latest version of lion but many of my applications require snow leopard to operate... thank you for any help.

The easiest solution is to partition your drive to provide a second partition on which you can install Snow Leopard. It need not be a large partition because you can still access applications on the other partition.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

To reinstall the original OSX in your rMBP, boot the MBP using the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys.  The display should show a picture if the planet earth and you will be connected to the Apple servers.   Make certain that you have a solid Internet connection and follow the instructions.

I have Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 ,I want to buy the updated operating system that puts iMessage and Facetime on my Macbook Pro. What should I search for, and then purchase, in the App Store?

FaceTime can run in the version of OS X that you currently have. To get Messageyou need Mountain Lion. The protocol used by Messages is iMeassage.
The question is does your MBP meet the specs for Mountain Lion.
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space

Verify you meet all the system requirements:

Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • What is the current operating system on a Mac laptop?

I'm shopping for a Mac laptop...what is the current operating system for a mac laptop?

Mavericks is no longer available from Apple — unless you purchase an older refurb unit from Apple that still has it installed. Yosemite 10.10.0 (now 10.10.2) superseded it. Mavericks came with my May 2014 MacBook Air, and I had no issues with Mavericks, or applications on it. I subsequently upgraded to Yosemite, because I prefer to stay current — and have had no issues with Yosemite either.

No, it won't. But you should make a backup of your files, document your settings and check application compatibility.
