Using two superdrives (nec 3550 & pioneer dvr 111)

hello all..i have installed 2 superdrives to replace 1 bad dvr 105. i could not get both working, so i just plugged in the pioneer (in the top spot) and all works. now, how do i plug in or set up the 2nd drive so they both work. all i see is the power and ribbon plug. thanks inadvance.

Hi
Typically, new drives are set to "Master" (jumper block on left rear of drive casing).
Change both to "CS".
Remove drive tray faceplate from both drives.

  • Mitsubishi DVD-R DL video CPRM disks rejected by iDVD6 with Pioneer DVR-111

As the title says, iDVD6 rejects my Mistubishi DVD-R DL CPRM discs.
I am trying to burn a 7.5 gig video project. iDVD says "Can't burn to single layer disc" after insertion. I have a new Pioneer DVR-111 in a DP 2Ghz G5 3gig RAM.
CPRM seems to be the culprit.
    Any ideas, suggestions welcome.

'CPRM' was Pioneers attempt to put copy protection on writable media. It stands for Content Protection for Recordable Media. You will see a serial number code in the silver ring closest to the center that is used in CPRM.
None of the other manufacturers picked up on CPRM and I though it was dead. It shouldn't interfer with normal use of the media.
In general on the forum, although we recommend DVD-R for single-layer discs, we recommend DVD+R for double-layer discs.

  • Pioneer DVR 111-D

    I made a mistake and ordered a "111" instead of a "110." Does anybody know if a "111" is compatible with a Mac G4?

OK, figured it out! After trying every possible jumper setting, as well as different power cables (I must have rebooted a dozen times!), my problem was a damaged IDE cable =S It was crimped by a rivit near the door hinge. Once I freed it and massaged the crimp out, all is well. I didn't have to take the faceplate off, and it fits and ejects find from my machine (2-door quicksilver). I ran PatchBurn, though Toast seemed good to go without it (I don't use iTunes or anything else to burn from this system- for crunching Photoshop only).
I left the jumper on the far left, as it was from the factory. Evidently Pioneer counts their jumpers from right to left 1-5.

  • How to use two Mac SuperDrives at once

Can you burn two blank CDs at once? Import two CDs at once?
I was searching the forums about and read something about a program called Toast and if you duplicate it you can use two SuperDrives at once. Where would I download toast and how would I duplicate it?
It possible to use more than two? (Not planning to do this just wondering)

    Hi Matt,
You can open more than document. Drag a document window by one edge or corner to resize if necessary, then drag the whole window by its title bar to one side of the screen. You should now be able to see the other document. Move that window beside the first.
You can switch between them by clicking on the one you want to be active.

  • Question for Mac Pro owners w/Pioneer DVR-112D superdrive: what firmware?

For those whose Mac Pro came pre-installed with the Pioneer DVR-112D superdrive, what firmware revision is it running?
The reason I'm asking is that I have an aftermarket 112D, bought from OWC, that I purchased for it's rip/burn speed advantage over the pokey, possibly riplock crippled, Sony DW-150A that came with my Mac Pro. This advantage was indeed gained, but at the expense of living with some quirkiness with the drive, namely the "two-ejects required" problem discussed here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...highlight=112D
This quirkiness has gotten worse since the latest Mac Pro EFI firmware update on 09/27/07. Now if I'm watching a movie from a DVD in the 112D tray, any extended pause (and by extended I only mean more than a minute or so) causes an unrecoverable error in DVD Player and I'm forced to restart the DVD Player and restart the movie.
My suspicion is that this all has something to do with some (overzealous?) power management feature in Mac OS X that's not playing nice with the existing 112D firmware (I'd be interested in hearing any other plausible theories).
Currently, my 112D firmware is at revision 1.06. There a number of updated firmware revisions for the 112D circulating on the internet, PC centric, of course and mostly related to disabling region-locking etc.
I'd like to match my 112D firmware to whatever Mac Pro owners with a 'bona-fide' 112D enjoy, if it's publicly available somewhere.
    Thanks.

My 112D is at version 1.21. Over the years I have successfully updated the firmware in my Pioneers using the Terminal app DVRFlash. But DVRFlash doesn't support the 112 or 111 series (yet). I wondered how you had updated to 1.22. I know it can be done by connecting to a PC, (which includes Bootcamp, but not Parallels) but I don't have ready access to a PC. At the moment I am waiting for Leopard before going Bootcamp way.
    Any advice?

  • Pioneer model DVR-111 BK is compatible inside the Power Mac G4

    Hi,
currently I am working with Power Mac G4 (dual processor) and Mac OS X v10.3.3 as operating system. I would like to know if the DVD writer Pioneer model DVR-111 BK is compatible inside the Power Mac G4.

Hi, Manuele, and welcome to the Discussions!
The DVR-111 is a highly-compatible drive. Like with most non-Apple supplied burners, to enable burn support and use the burn capabilties of Apple's iLife applications using OS X 10.3.x, you'll need to downoad and install Patchburn 3.

  • Anyone have experieence with Pioneer DVR-K05PD Superdrives??

    Hi,
I'm really tired of the slow burning speed of the Matshita UJ-845E and thinking about replacing it with a Pioneer DVR-K05PD superdrive. Anyone have any experience with this model?
Especially when used with no-name DVD media. The best speed I can get from even reasonably good DVDs is 2x with this model Matshita

That pretty well answers the question. Supermarket DVDs are probably equivalent to what I buy in Asia.
From what I've been able to dig up after visiting lots of sites is that the K06 is slightly smaller in depth than the K05PD.
The K05PD also states it is csel so the solder mod required on the K06 shouldn't be required. Though some sites say you can boot from the K06 by holding the option key.
I deliberately haven't closed this thread yet so I can ad a final comment after installing and trying it out. There's a DVR-K06 I should be able to get at a good price in the next day or so.
    Thanks for your help.

  • No disc burning  with a Pioneer DVR 111D using I-Tunes

I recently installed the Pioneer DVR 111D (rev 1.23) in my G4 550 running under Panther 10.3.9. I had to install the Patchburn to make it work.
Now it burns discs (dvd's) using the Finder, but not using I-Tunes.
    Is there a fix?

my DVR 104 died a couple of weeks ago. went to OWC for a 111. it did the same with my Sawtooth at first, then downloaded Patchburn 3. I did notice that when Patchburn was on my Desktop, it wouldn't burn in iTunes, so I dragged the icon to my hard drive. then I went into iTunes and was able to burn from there. that may have been my initial problem. hope this helps.

  • Installing an Apple/Pioneer DVR-109AB 'SuperDrive'

Other World Computing has the Apple/Pioneer DVR-109AB 'SuperDrive' for $30 right now. Since my parents' iMac Flat Panel's drive is broken, this seems like a great way to replace it. One question, though - can I install this drive without messing up the pretty bezel/door on the front of the iMac?
If only this would work in my G5 I'd give them my 8x Superdrive...

That should be fine but you may have to remove the new black/beige bezel and use the smaller on on the current drive and a spot of glue.
It's pretty fiddly to work inside an iMac G4 so you must be cautious. Always take anti-static precautions. Here are three options for guiding you through the procedure:
    MacWorld
    xlr8yourmac
    Service Manuals
I've also taken a fair few photos which you can find here.
I'd advise reading the reports on the xlr8yourmac's drive database so get other people's experiences first.
You must replace the Thermal Paste when you close the iMac up or it will overheat.
It's probably worth replacing the PRAM Battery whilst you're in there as these have a finite life (once they fail to re-charge you may start to run in to snags - it's only a $5 part). You might also give consideration to upgrading the 'factory' RAM slot.

  • Ext. Quefire drive CDRW broke, can I replace the drive with a NEC or Pionee

I had one of those Quefire 16x10x40 CDRW firewire external drives and now the drive doesn't work. The Mac says it can't find the CDRW/brunner software or drive. I'm assuming the drive is bad and not the enclosure electronics. The drive inside is a Teac CD-W516E.
Would I be able to buy an internal NEC ND-3550 or Pioneer DVR-110 and use it in the same Quefire enclosure electronics?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi
"Next project is to try to burn one of my imovies with idvd"
This won't work with an external drive unless you have iDVD5.01...
For older versions, you need to run PatchBurn/Expert Mode/Install iDVD support, which will give you the option of burning to external drives when you control-click the iDVD burn button twice...

  • Burning to Two Superdrives

I've scoured the forums, but I still haven't found a good answer on this. Can you simultaneously burn to both superdrives on the Mac Pro?
I have tried to do this using two instances of toast. As soon as I start the burn process on the second instance I get buffer underrun errors. I have enabled buffer underrun protection in toast, but it doesn't seem to help.
I am trying to burn two different source files(disk images) ... one on each superdrive.
I haven't tried using disk utility (two instances).
    Can this be done?
    TIA

    Hello,
I've used both toast 8 and 9 simultaneously without any problems. All i did was select the program and duplicate it. I then would launch both instances, and encode and burn content using both burners. This has been working great for me lately with toast 9. Also, when i set both my drives to burn, they always have burned at the speed i set. If i was to burn two dvd's @ 16x, they actually burn at approx. 16x like they should.
I've duplicated programs like Visual Hub, Handbrake, Mactheripper, etc to take advantage of my dual burners and haven't yet had any issues.
    My burners are:
    Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112D (Stock)
    HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55L (Aftermarket)
I'm using the Leopard 10.5.2 with all the latest updates. My Mac Pro is a first gen w/ two dual xeons @ 2.66ghz w/ 3GB RAM.

  • PIoneer DVR-112D will not boot to retail Tiger DVD

I recently replaced the original Sony CRX155E CD-R/RW drive with a new Pioneer DVR-112D DVD +/- RW drive so that I could install Tiger and purchase an iPhone. I installed the drive, downloaded and ran Patchburn, and have used the drive for several days.
The drive plays and burns DVDs within OS 10.3.9 perfectly. It also recognizes the Tiger disc and all files within the Finder. However, when I attempt to install / upgrade Tiger, the Mac freezes upon startup. The Grey Apple screen appears with the Logo and spinning wheel at roughly 3x normal size and stays. I have let it sit in that state for up to 12 hours. There is no change.
To get back into OS X, I have to put my Panther disc in and boot into the installer. I then must change the boot drive back to my hard drive and reboot.
I have sifted pioneer's support site for a Mac driver and ran two superdrive firmware upgrades I found on Apple to no avail. Can anyone help?

    250GB Western Digital Hard Drive
Pioneer DVR-112D DVD Burner (Internal IDE)
AGP 32 MB Graphics Card (OEM)

    Ben,
You really don't need any additional drivers or firmware updates for the 112D or for the QS G4 to enable the installation of Tiger. The 112D burner should work (and apparently does) with a simple swap with your old optical drive, followed by a PMU reset for good measure. The only significant thing you may be missing in your Panther OS is the DVD Player application, if your old optical drive was not DVD capable back when you installed Panther. However, this shouldn't affect your ability to do a Tiger install.
Boot to Safe Mode, which will run FSCK (file system check) for you, then use Disk Utility to run Repair Permissions, then shut down.
Check the Tiger disc to insure it's clean and unscratched.
You might boot Panther from your startup drive, load the Tiger disc, and copy it to your hard drive if you have the space available. If it copies over properly, the disc and the drive are likely okay. You can then trash/empty trash the copied data.
Take Japamac's advice, disconnect your peripherals and do a PMU reset to clear your startup memory, setting it back to its defaults. Insure that you indeed are using a Retail version of the Tiger install DVD, which is a black disc with a large "X" on it. Using an upgrade version or a gray OEM version of the Tiger disc will likely present problems on your Mac, during or after an install.

  • How do I configure a Pioneer DVR-XD10 external dvd writer to my macbook pro laptop?

How do I configure a Pioneer DVR-XD10 external dvd writer to my macbook pro laptop?
I read online that you could use an external dvd writer on a macbook pro when the internal dvd writer died.
    Please help?
It shows power running through the external dvd writer when I plug in the two usb ends into the respective ports, but it doesn't recognize it when I try to write media to a DVD.

If you have not already done so, your chances will really improve if you....

  • What DVD-R to Use with Superdrive?

I'm attempting to burn a DVD master and send it off to the replication house. Upon the first attempt, the replication house called and said the disc failed and asked what brand of DVD-R I was using. I told him "Office Depot" and he said they were not acceptable and that I should use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden instead. I got my hands on some Verbatim discs, but my Superdrive won't recognize them. Do I need to get specific burn speed discs to work on my Superdrive (SONY DVD RW DW-U21A)?
    -Ray

From what I can tell, that drive may have problems reading 16X discs. It would need a firmware update to fix the problem. This is not the easiest thing to do for Sony drives (yours is a rebadged Lite-On), as it generally means putting the drive in a PC to do the flashing of the firmware. The latest version of DVRFlash (http://lasvegas.rpc1.org) purports to support OEM Sony drives, but I don't have a Sony drive and have not tried it. It works wonderfully with Pioneers, though.
So, you might see if you can find some older 8X (or slower) discs. This might not be easy, however.
Another alternative would be to replace the Sony with a newer drive, such as the Pioneer DVR-112. They can be found for around $40. IIRC, you'll also need new standoffs for the drive. Most Mac repair shops should be able to get them for you if you go this route.
