Using twoo NVIDIA 7300 cards: firmware bug? Screen refresh problem

strange bug with Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon:
I have two Displays, 20 and 23".
When both connected to the standard NVIDIA card in the Mac Pro, evreything is fine.
I ordered a second NVIDIA card wich I installed in slot 4, using 8 lanes for this card.
Now, when one display is connected to the standard card and the second display is connected to the second NVIDIA card, the screen of the display connected to the build in card (the 16 lanes card) does noet refresh correctly. You can not see what iMovie is displaying for example, iMovie screen is white and does not display what should be on screen.
Sometimes none of the main screen is refresehd (example: Safari content is not updated, while in fact it is!) but the mousecursor moves correctlyon screen.
Also third party software (like FotoMagico) is not updated on screen
Connecting both displays to one card and everything is fine!
A strange bug wich I guess is related to the Mac Pro firmware
I've tried the second NVIDIA card in all the PCI-E slots to see if this makes a difference, it does not.
I used the PCI-E configure tool to vhange the speed of the lanes for the PCI-E slots, also this makes no diffrence.
At this moment my second card is not usable.
This is a problem on all three Mac Pro's we tried this on (2.66 version, 2 machines with 1Gb RAM, 1 machine with 3Gb RAM), latest OS 10.4.7
Starting in safe mode makes no difference on either Mac Pro

I am running two 7300 GTs in my 2.66 GHz Mac Pro driving (2) 20" + (1) 30" Cinema Display. I am not seeing the issue you mention in iMovie. Quicktime flickers every once in a while when playing iTunes video content, but that started with the iTunes / Quicktime upgrade, not when I added the extra card.
I have my nVidia 7300 cards in slots 1 &2 each running 8 lanes. Might be worth a try. The 7300 is not that "high performance" that running in 8 lanes is going to make a huge difference in speed. What it will do for you is get the cards on an equal footing.

  • Screen refresh problem where data is entered and the screen doesn't refresh

Many people in the company are experiencing the odd screen refresh problem where data is entered and the screen doesn't refresh to show the updated result in corresponding cell formulas.
Microsoft have issued a hotfix to fix the issue for Excel 2003 as shown. Microsoft released a hotfix for this problem (<a href="advisory?ID=978908">KB978908</a>). Display memory tends to pick up data from hidden sheets and pastes it
into the active screen. No impact on the file. This occurs when protecting and unprotecting worksheets in VBA. I also suspect that enabling and disabling screen refresh contributes to this problem. In any case there is a fix, albeit with the following disclaimer:
As of yet I have not been able to find a fix for this for office 2010 and 2013, Any suggestions would be great.

    Hi,
Based on your description, Excel does not show the text strings when you typing. It may be caused by the cell format, if we set the cell format as ";;;" in custom format, it will not display the text that you typed.
And the issue may be caused by the third-party input method, there are some compatibility issue between them.
If the issue still exits, please try the following methods
    Verify/install the latest updates
    Repair your Office program

  • Use of NVIDIA 8800GT Card in 1st Generation Mac Pro

I just visited my local Apple store to inquire about the "1st Gen. Mac Pro" 8800GT card. They have some with p/n MB 560Z/A on the box. But no one knows anything in detail about the card, or possible installation/operation problems. Is the MB 560Z/A the card version that should work in my 1st gen Mac Pro (purchased 29Aug06)?

That's the right card. The Mac Pro (early 2008) uses the MB137Z/A

  • Screen refresh problem in kde4 with konsole, nvidia and compiz

    Hi,
I have for the last month or so been experiencing really slow screen refreshes in konsole. What happens is that the text often doesn't get refreshed and you end up with the cursor not on the correct line, blocks all over the konsole window and blank areas of text. Minimising and maximising the konsole windows seems to refresh them as does using compiz's scale plugin. As I spend pretty much all day using konsole this has been really annoying. I have today however found a fix in this bug report:- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … mments=all
This was to go into ccsm, enable workaronds under utility and make sure "Force syncronization between X and GLX" is ticked.
Thought I'd share is this has really been doing my head in, so hope this helps someone else!

  • Hi,l bought my ipad from uk and got my ID using my turkish credit card. I have a problem using itunes.bottom of the page l have got podcasts, itunes u,downloads. Thats all l have got. Is it coz l have used my turkish cc?

    Hi,
I have a problem with itunes.l have registered it but l still can not use. When l click on itunes l have got podcasts, itunes u,downloads on the bottom of the page.l can not see any musics or anything. I ve bought it from uk and used my turkish credit card. Is it because turkish credit card? Pls l need help

The content owners do not allow the iTunes Store to sell across country borders, so you must have a credit card and residence in the country whose iTunes Store you wish to use. Since you live in Turkey and have a Turkish credit card, that's the only iTunes Store you can use, and as has been pointed out, Apple has not been able to obtain the rights to sell music, movies and shows there. That's the nature of the entertainment business at this time, where the rights in each country are held by separate entities and hence require completely separate negotiations.
Sorry, but there's nothing you can so about this. You'll need to see if there are download stores in Turkey available to you, and if not you'll need to purchase CDs, DVDs, etc.
    Regards.

  • Screen refresh problem with Windows 7

    Hello all,
I've recently begun testing Oracle with Windows 7 on a new HP 2540p notebook computer. I've encountered a very strange issue so far. After logging into Oracle, and Windows switches to Windows Basic theme, I should be taken to the main Navigator screen. But instead, the screen is simply white. If I drag (or nudge) the title bar just a bit, the screen refreshes and I can see the menu items. Then if I click on something (or even use hotkeys - ALT+F to get the file menu, for example), I don't see anything happen. But if I move the window just a bit, the screen refreshes and I can see that it did actually take my input, it just didn't re-draw the screen. I'm wondering if this may be a graphics driver issue (I do have the latest driver for the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD adapter), or if someone could point me toward a resolution to this problem. Any help is much appreciated.

    Dear All,
Same problem of REFRESH PROBLEM also faced by but only a single and specific Windows 7 client.
if you have resolved the issue , so please share with us.

  • Photoshop screen refresh problem?

Ran into a problem this morning in PS. I wanted to move a layer in PS, would drag it and it would crash PS. So I would restart, reopen the file and instead of dragging I would move things around with the arrows. Works ok, but the screen wouldn't refresh until I clicked from one layer to another. Any idea why this is and how to avoid in the future?

If you were on WIndows, I'd guess you had an out of date video card driver.
On Macintosh, I've only seen problems like that due to bugs in third party plugins, and a few haxies (system extension utilities).
Oh, and make sure you've installed all the OS and Photoshop updates.

  • Dual monitor screen refresh problem

We have a GUI application that runs on a dual monitor setup and are experiencing strange behaviour. The application is started on one monitor (the left hand one), but at times a window which has been dragged to the right hand monitor stops getting screen updates (e.g. typing show nothing on screen, but the characters are in fact in the field). If a window is positioned so that it overlaps both screens and the problem occurs, what we observe is the portion of the window on the left monitor (where the application was started) is redrawn successfully, but the portion of the window on the right hand monitor is not drawn at all - half the window shows correct detail, half the window is a grey rectangle.
This issue is not experienced when we run the application on a single monitor. The problem is intermittent, and is not due to idle time in the application (it can occur which an operator is working with the GUI).
We are running 1.5.0 update 5.

    We noticed the same problem.
We've got JSE 1.5.0_06 and a swing GUI. For me it looks like this: Only the bigger part of the application is refreshed. So if the application starts at the secondary monitor and is dragged so that a small part of the GUI is displayed on the primary monitor only the bigger part of the GUI (so that one on the secondary monitor) gets refreshed. So scrolling leads to graphic mistakes in the smaller GUI part.
If the main part of the application runs on the primary monitor and only a small part is on the secondary one we observe the same problem: Only the part on the primary monitor gets refreshed.
We also observed this grey rectangle paulch already mentioned.
Minimizing and refitting forces the repainting so then everything is fine.
Is was trying to find something in the bug database but I wasn't successful although I found several descriptions like this in this forum.
Can anybody present some work-around for this?
    Thanks
    Inga

  • Java screen refresh problems

I've recently noticed problems running Java applications under 10.4.8, with the latest Java DST updates - Java version is reported as:
    java version "1.5.0_07"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_07-164)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87, mixed mode, sharing)
I've seen problems running CLC Free Workbench (http://www.clcbio.com/free/) and Cytoscape (http://www.cytoscape.org/). When I launch the applications, the application window is not drawn correctly. Buttons and tabs are not drawn properly (edges misaligned or missing); some window elements fail entirely to display; menu labels may not be drawn, although clicking where the menu should be will drop down the menu. When I resize the window, redraw will typically fail entirely, although I can in some cases get elements to redraw by mousing over them. Basically, the applications are unusable.
When I launch Java Preferences or Java cache viewer, those windows also fail to draw, and I'm left looking at a blank rectangle.
A colleague running the same OS an Java versions has no problems on his Macbook - the applications display correctly. I'm running on a dual 1GHz PowerMac G4 (MDD).
Any suggestions as to how I can get my Java to draw to the screen?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Following up on my own question - I took some advice I read in another thread, and created a new test account to see if the problem is specific to my account. Apparently it is as both problem applications display just fine when logged into the new account.
So, the question becomes why is my account having problems displaying Java apps? What can I flush/reset/delete to make things display properly again?

  • Labview screen refresh bug (disappearing VI icons in diagram window)

    Hello,
I have Labview 6 (fully patched with just about EVERY download NI offers on this site) running on a Windows NT 4.00.13.81 box. Since this is a screen refresh problem, it might be useful to mention that the graphics card is a ATI 3D Rage Pro (bought in 1999, driver versions 5.2.040, 4.0.0).
I think I've ran into either a Labview or a graphics card driver bug, because the VI icons in the diagram window seem to disappear every time I move the mouse over them. Minimising the window and maximising it again makes them appear (if only someone had included a "refresh" shortcut in Labview I could even learn to live with this!), but the bug persists. Shrinking and reinstating the diagram window co
nstantly is a reasonable way to work.
I cannot remember for sure, but I believe this bug appeared when I patched Labview 6.0 into 6.0.2.
Any help will be much appreaciated, this bug is frustrating and doesn't let me work!I really do not want to upgrade to Labview 7 either, as all my work is in 6.0.x and I have no time for major shifts in versions.
    Thank you,

  • Single NVIDIA 7300 GT...how would it handle dual 20' Dells?

I'm a student film editor...just wondering how well my single NVIDIA 7300 card in my MacPro would handle dual 20' Dell Widescreens. I have one, but I feel like I need a second one...but I don't think I want the second one if it means that I really ought to upgrade my graphics card as well. Any advice?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

they will improve the speed of the graphics fitting 2 7300 GT's
This is a pile of bollocks. Adding a 2nd Nvidia 7300 GT will only give additional display support and will make no difference to your GPU processing abilities. SLI is not supported under Mac OS X.

  • Late 2006, 24" iMac, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Screen Tearing, nVidia 7300

Late 2006, 24" iMac, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Screen Tearing, nVidia GeForce 7300 GT
I've been suffering with screen tearing, strange screen artifacts, etc. followed by totally unresponsive freezing machine. This problem has been happening to varying degrees for about 9 months.
Initially, I was able to mitigate the problem with smcFanControl. Adjusting the fan speeds up helped keep the machine cool and prevent most of the problems. Recently, we had a spell of hot weather and the fans just couldn't keep up. If you're using smcFanControl, the only fan speed that will really make a difference is the CPU. The HDD and ODD fans are no where near where you need to be.
Also, I noticed the machine was LOADED with dust when I took it apart, including the heat sink fins for the graphics card. If you have time you may want to try a thorough cleaning with compressed air before replacing the card. You just need to get through step 11 below to access what needs to be cleaned.
Based on reading here and elsewhere, I decided to replace the graphics card. To give back to the community, I wanted to layout the procedure here.
    Where to buy the card.
I had a tough time finding the right card. I did exhaustive web searches using every combination of Nvidia 7300 GT, etc. You really need to search by the Apple part number. The Apple part number for the 7300 is 661-4179, for the 7600 is 661-4180. I found it at We Love Macs and at dv warehouse. I paid $248 for the 7600 card. BE CAREFUL buying a "refurbished" card. At We Love Macs, "refurbished" means "pulled from a working machine." Could be a machine with as much mileage as yours and prone to the same failures as yours.
The card is an MXM style card (generally used in laptops), with a giant heat sink and heat pipe assembly. The card can be separated from the heat assembly. If I had time, I would have tried a generic, cheaper, MXM style card.
    Dispelling some myths.
People here and elsewhere have said that no Intel iMac graphics card can be replaced, that they're wedded to the logic board. The one on this model can be replaced, I've done it. Also, some have said you can't put a 256MB, 7600 GT in a machine that originally had a 128MB, 7300 GT. Also, not true. That's what I did to my machine and it is working fine.
So here's the step-by-step on my take apart and replacement. This is just one user helping out others, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. This takes about 1 1/2 hours to take apart and 2 to put back together.
    1) Install the iStat widget and monitor the temperatures for a few days and record the temperatures (to be able to verify that you've completed the repair correctly later)
    2) Make a complete backup of any internal drives and make sure the backup will be bootable (use Carbon Copy Cloner)
    3) Use static safeguards, like an anti-static wrist strap.
    4) Get a pen a stack of paper envelopes to separate and label the pieces you remove.
    5) You'll need a #2 Phillips and #6, 8, 10 Torx. Most of the screws at T-8. There are 8 T-8s holding in the LCD. They are about 1 1/4" down. You'll need a long, skinny T-8 to get to them.
    6) Unplug the machine and place it on it's back on a large white sheet of paper.
    7) Remove RAM door, #2 Phillips x 2.
    8) Remove RAM.
    9) Remove 4 T-8s along bottom.
    10) Remove large rectangular plastic bezel surrounding the whole machine, tilt up being careful not to stress iSight cables. You'll need to stretch it around the RAM ejection tabs.
    11) Detach two iSight cables.
    12) Peel up black stickers at lower corners of speakers.
    13) Remove LCD screws, T-8 x 8. You'll probably drop a few, they're pretty easy to retrieve.
    14) Remove two retaining screws on right hand LCD cable. T-6 x2 Unplug cable.
    15) Remove LCD inverter cable, left.
Start unplugging everything connected to the logic board.
    16) Unplug cable coming from right speaker. Note cable routing, it is the only one that's a little tricky. Also, note that the left one plugs in on the right and the right one plugs in on the left.
    17) Remove right speaker. T-10 Note: left and right speaker screws are different lengths.
    18) Unplug ODD blower cable.
    19) Unplug ODD temp cable and lift up tape.
    20) Unplug HDD blower cable.
    21) Unplug the HDD temp cable.
    22) Unplug the camera & mic cable.
    23) Unscrew the clamp securing the airport card (has two antenna cables going to it, labeled PCIE), T-6 x 2
    24) Unplug SATA cable.
    25) Unplug Power cable, thick black plastic harness, socket.
    26) Unplug ambient temp cable.
    27) Unscrew the bluetooth card, T-6 x2.
    28) Unplug CPU blower cable.
    29) Unplug power button cable, 2 conductor, tiny cable, bottom left.
    30) Unscrew left speaker, T-10, unplug from logic board, but just leave dangling, no need to remove cable completely.
    31) Remove logic board screws. Be careful to segregate them, they have different lengths and different thread pitches and thread types. Some are machine threads going into metal, some are coarse threads going into plastic.
    31a) Heat sink frame to case T-8 x 2
    31b) Logic board to case T-8 x 3
31c) Screws at heat sink from arrows T-8 x 3
31d) Logic board at bottom near RAM slot T-8 x 2
    32) Unplug ODD ribbon cable, be extremely careful. Release plastic tabs on each side to remove. Be sure it is fully and evenly seated when you put it back later.
    33) Remove logic board with attached graphics card.
    34) Unplug graphics card heat sink sensor cable at logic board end.
    35) Remove graphics card screws 2 x T-6
    36) Remove single screw from small L-bracket on heat sink 1 x T-6
    Replace graphics card.
Reverse steps, put everything back together. Be careful not to pinch any cables when you put the logic board back in. When you put the LCD back in, if you can't get the screws to stick to the driver, use some glue stick from your kid's art supplies.
Test everything. You've disconnected every cable in the system.
I torture tested the machine with a space heater on it, 5 different videos of different formats playing at the same time. No problems.
I took a lot of pictures inside the machine. As soon as I figure out a good place to post them, I'll try to add a link here.
    Good luck

    Greetings!
I know this is in response to your post from over 2 years ago, but I was searching on Apple's site for the max RAM I can upgrade our refurbed iMac too and it brought up this post.
Oddly enough, I've been experiencing the same screen issues and locking up on our iMac as well. I was concerned it was a bad memory module, but now I'm thinking it's the same issue you found.
Because I bought this some 2+ years ago refurbed from Apple, I'm not surprised that could be the actual problem.
I've pulled this thing apart once to replace the hard-drive which crashed about a year ago, so I'm not totally new at opening it up, but this process you mention sounds pretty intense...just wanted to get your second take on it based on what I've done thus far.
Thanks again for posting this...it was an eye-opener as to what might actually be causing our issues with our trusted Mac!

  • I'm use two screens, Firefox 4 is not displaying correctlying on my second screen. How do I fix this? (I have Windows 7, 64 bit, and using an external video card)

It only happens on the screen I'm using the external video card. I'm assuming its a bug.

I think this is related to other posts, the solution at the moment seems to be to disable hard acceleration.
