Using unlocked 3g on cdma/hspa network

I purchased an unlocked refurbished iphone with the intention of using it on the koodo network in Canada. It is primarily a cdma network, but uses its parent company's hspa network.
I realize that cdma isn't supported on the Iphone 3g, but thought hspa would work. And it did at first, but soon after started losing service and failing calls at every turn. The sim card isn't at fault, as I've since installed it in an Inq phone which works fine.
Here's my question: is there any way of knowing if the phone or the network is at fault? I would hate to switch to a gsm provider only to find the problem remains. The long distance rates on koodo are the lowest anywhere...

As for the rest of your question, Koodo says on their website that they do not support MicroSIM cards or the iPhone 4 & iPad. Not sure if that is because they don't offer microSIMs or if there is some sort of incompatibility. Koodo's network is just Telus who do offer the iPhone (4 & 3GS), using 3G only and on the compatibility website for koodo they do say that the iPhone 3g is supported.

You could always borrow a microSIM card from a somebody with an iPhone 4 or other phone with a MicroSIM and see if that works in your unlocked iPhone. If the iPhone was purchased from Apple a refurbished unit should carry the same warranty as a new unit, so you could always book a genius appointment to have it troubleshooted.
You could also try updating to iOS 4.2 to see if that helps. If the iPhone was not officially unlocked updating will restore it to factory settings and the unofficial unlock will be lost potentially forever.

Be more specific. Verizon's iPad2 wifi+3G works on the Sprint CDMA netwok. You need a Sprint dataplan to use Sprint's network.

No. The CDMA section of the phone is permanetly locked to a specific CDMA carrier such as Verizon or Sprint. IT can't be unlocked and used elsewhere.

You should still be able to manually manage the music on your iPhone within iTunes. Make sure that when your iPhone is plugged in, look in the Summary tab to see if “Manually manage music and videos” is enabled and you can even you turn off Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected. Take a look at the first article below to give more information on that. As far as your other questions about calling someone, I have provided two options for you. Can't send e-mails using Versamail 4.0.1 form my Palm Centro (unlocked - from ATT - on Rogers network).

Good afternoon. I am using a Palm Centro I just bought (unlocked - from ATT - on Rogers network). All is working great BUT sending e-mails. Versamail is receiving just fine but refuses to send. It puts everything I try to send into the "outbox" and then tries to send only to later tell me that it unable to send. The server I go through is a POP server. It has never given me such an issue before - Any advice!!

With POP/IMAP email, there are 2 server. One is incomming to whihc ur ok and the other is outgoing to which that one is not. Since you are using Rogers for service, use the SMTP server from them to which I do belive is still smtp.rogerswirelessdata.com for the outgoing mail server.
Even though the phone has been unlocked, the phone design is still ATT so the versamail application is probably still using ATT's SMTP by default and you need to make the manual change.

Yes.
Only Apple sells officially unlocked iPhones in the US, & the T-Mobile labeled iPhone is officially unlocked if putchased from Apple.
But, your warranty/support will only be valid in the US, & the phone will most likely not support LTE anywhere other than North America.
Any issues, no authorized source, outside of the US, will touch the phone, or help you in anyway.

Sprint is a CDMA carrier, same as Verizon so it will work on CDMA.

Unlocked, yet password-protected wifi networks render email/apps useless

Email and apps work great at home where I have a wifi connection on my home wireless router. But when out and about, unlocked (yet password protected) wifi networks (like Optonline) render apps useless. In short, email and apps are trying to connect to the wifi network (since it's unlocked). But in order to actually connect to it, you need to sign in via Safari first.
Shouldn't the iPhone be "smarter" and know that if a wifi connection is locked OR password protected, it should simply go ahead and use 3G? Otherwise, you need to manually turn off wifi and force the iPhone to use 3G.
Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions?

If you have previously connected your iPhone to such a wi-fi network - which you must do first before entering the required password via the Safari webpage before you have internet access via the wi-fi network, your iPhone will automatically connect to the wi-fi network when returning within range of the network.
If you don't want to use such a particular wi-fi network for internet access, which the provider for the network requires entering a password via a webpage before having internet access via the wi-fi network, remove the wi-fi network from your iPhone and don't join the network when returning within range of the network.
When within range of the network, which your iPhone will automatically connect to if you have previously connected to the network if wi-fi access is on, select the right facing arrow in a blue circle icon to the right of the network and at the next screen for the wi-fi network settings, select Forget this Network, and don't connect to the wi-fi network when returning within range of the network. If you want to use the wi-fi network for internet access, you must enter your password to access the internet via the wi-fi network, which requires connecting to the wi-fi network first.

Only trouble.. be warned this is quite problematic. With Mavericks even more so.

Take particular note. The TC is not a NAS or file server.. it can be pressed into use as one.. but will suffer..
1. Slow spin up of the disk and fast spin down. Causing streaming and library issues with itunes.
2. iphoto is easily corrupted.. don't move it to a network drive at all.
3. no backup.. the TC cannot back itself up.. it is designed as a backup target for Time Machine. but Time Machine cannot backup network drives.. and nor did apple build in a backup.. it was never needed. After all it is a backup.. not a file store.
4. you cannot partition it. You will have issues with TM if you do store both data and TM backups on it.
5. You can use USB drive plugged into the TC, and experience a new definition of pain and suffering.. well slow file transfer anyway.

They said I need to change my settings to NAT settings. I haven't been able to figure out or find anything. I have also spoken to Apple Support on the phone for hours without being able to figure out how to do this ( i don't think he knew much either lol.) iTunes and iCloud and different accounts, you will need to delete both accounts from your device before adding the new details in their place.
For iCloud go to settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit the delete button. You can then sign back in using your correct details. For iTunes go to settings >store, tap your account ID and then sign out, you can then sign back in using your correct Apple ID.
