Using UPS units with iMac G5 (iSight)

I just bought an APC RS 800 VA UPS for my iMac and now find that it might not be a good idea. There is a post on Macintouch about a report from APC tech saying that the cheaper units are not compatible with iMacs because of the squarewave (vs sinewave) output. If it goes on battery power, it could damage the iMac power supply.
Very strange, because they have the iMac listed on the box the unit shipped in as being ideal for use with this UPS!
Has anyone used the less expensive UPS units with the iMac G5 successfully? Have you had it run on battery power with no noise (hum or buzz) or other anomalies?
Griff

I do not have a UPS from APC, but a generic one from Best Buy which looks like a unit made by CyberPower. It has kicked in several times without any humming or buzzing at all.

  • Using ADVC 55 with iMac Retina 5K Late 2014

    Hi,
    I was able to use my ADVC 55 capture device to capture non-digital video such as Hi-8 VHS etc. with my previous iMac which do naturally have Firewire port on the back side.  Now I am using iMac Retina which is not supplied with Firewire port.  However Apple does have a conversion cable from Firewire 800 to thunderbolt where you can then plug into thunderbolt ports on the back of the iMac Retina Late 2014.
    Unfortunaletly, I cannot see the ADVC 55 capture interface on neither of my vide editing software such as Final Cut Pro, iMovie etc.  The ADVC unit itself has the light on it that is lit always in red color, not green color that you normally have with a successful connection.  I am suspicious about this conversion cable to thunderbolt that makes this incomplience.  Does anybody have a suggestion that I can follow?
    Many Thanks,

    Hi there - wondered if you got an answer to your question as I have the exact same question.
    Many thanks

  • IS EATON UPS COMPATIBLE WITH IMAC

    I have an Eaton 5S UPS. It is supposed to be Apple compatible and detected by OS X when plugged into the USB port.
    My iMac 27 (2012) does not recognise the device at all. Have tried another USB cable and several USB ports on iMac but still not recognised by iMac.
    Eaton say there may be a problem with the device and ro return it under warranty. But before I do this I was wondering if this is an issue others have had with Eaton UPS.

    There was no software with the UPS. When I looked at Eaton website there were mainly Windows downloads. The Mac downloads were both old and did not work on my Mac!
    So I contacted Eaton support. They said my Mac should just recognize the UPS attached once USB plugged in of course.
    Thanks for your suggestions. I think I will do what Eaton support have advised and return the unit under warranty albeit a hassle! Hopefully they can sort it for me.

  • Using additional monitor with iMac 17" Core Duo.. SLOWDOWN

    I bought the mini-dvi to vga adapter to connect my IBM 21" CRT to my iMac for dual display purposes. It works and all, but whenever it's connected my mac slows down to a crawl. I thought originally it was a RAM issue, but once I upgraded to 1GB the result was the same.
    Is anyone else noticing this, or have any solutions?
    It does this in both extended and mirror mode, btw. I'm using OS X 10.4.6.

    After messing around with the settings for a while, it seems that the problem goes away if both monitors are set the same refresh rate. I set my CRT to 60Hz and I don't see the slowdown yet.
    This probably is only a problem if you're using a CRT, since LCDs all generally use 60Hz.

  • Using external drive with iMac as startup

    I have an iMac that the hard drive is failing thus I purchased an external drive to use as a startup up drive connected to the iMac.  How reliable is this setup and what are the cons/pros in operating this way?

    Assuming you bought a FW800 drive the performance should be OK, not as good as your old internal HD but useable. If you bought a USB drive the performance is going to be very slow. As far as reliability it should be fine assuming you bought a decent quality HD. However why not just get the internal HD replaced? If you decide to move forward with the external HD after you install OS X onto it don't forget to make sure it's set as your Startup drive in System Preferences.

  • Using second computer with iMac monitor

    Does anyone know if it is possible to use the imac as a monitor for a second computer? I have speciality software that must run on XP and dual booting would be a problem secondary to need for a set IP address and support at my place is lousy. I used to use a monitor switch to share a monitor with 2 CPUs. Does anyone know if you can do a similar thing using the iMAC as the monitor for the second CPU?
    Thanks

    Unfortunately, the iMac doesn't have video-in capabilities, and you won't be able to use it as a monitor.
    I hope this helps.

  • Use ASUS monitor with iMac

    Has anyone tried to use the ASUS VH242H monitor as an external display over HDMI with the iMac (mid-2007 running 10.6.8)?

    Good to know that it's technically feasible, but do you (or anyone else) know about quality? I'm really only using this screen for text based applications, but If I have to move some graphics windows over (or watch video) it would be nice to know I'm not wasting my money. Thanks!

  • Using Huey Pro with iMac

    Good afternoon,
    About a year ago I had asked if anyone had been able to calibrate an iMac i5 with a Huey Pro? Ian Lyons was kind enough to answer suggesting installing Rosetta. As a result, I did that and d/l the latest Pantone drivers many times over but to this day the sensor is still not recognized and I am using the Mac internal calibration.
    Since a year has passed and the iMacs are more ubiquitous, my question is different: Has anyone actually had success using a Huey Pro with the iMac?
    Thanks much, Andy

    Andy, this really isn't a Lightroom question, and if you're lucky someone may chime in. Still, you might be better off checking for newer versions of the software. e.g. http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/Pantone.aspx?pg=19567&ca=12#login also check out http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/reviews/pantone_huey_pro.html

  • Using eMac keyboard with iMac help needed.

    I have an iMac from around 2009, at the weekend the keyboard stopped working and until I can afford a replacement a friend has given me an old eMac keyboard he had spare to use in the meantime (which could be a while).
    Just this morning I've realised that it doesn't have some of the function keys that the iMac keyboard has. The one I'm missing the most is the F3 key that shows me all the windows I have open at once. Something I find invaluable as I use my mac for music production and helps sort through and find all the plugins I have open.
    Is there a way to achieve what the iMac F3 does with a combination of keys on the eMac keyboard?
    Thanks
    Andy.

    With older Mac keyboards, try using the Command key with the F keys to see which F keys do what function.

  • Airport Express problem with iMac G5 iSight - help needed!

    I bought an Airport Express (AX) last week, upgraded my OS to Leopard and installed Airport Utility fine. I could join my existing wireless network and everything worked fine for streaming itunes through my stereo. But this week Airport Utility has stopped being able to find the AX and I can't work out why - really need some help! Its in the same place as last week, close to the computer, and I tried another location right next to the Imac but didn't work. When I restore factory settings Airport Utility does recognise the device, and allows me to update settings for wirelessly connecting to my existing wireless network, so the light on the AX is solid green. But then AU again says it cannot find any AX wireless device. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong???

    Hi I'm still battling with this - have connected the AX to my Imac via ethernet and it shows up fine in Airport Utility. Status light is green and it says its set up to connect to my existing wireless network using wireless connection. Security in Network Preferences is the same for both: WPA2 Personal.
    So I don't think there's a problem with the AX, and my current wireless network (BT Home Hub) is working fine.
    And when I restore factory settings Airport Utility can see the AX before updating settings so the wireless side of AX must work too.
    I'm figuring it must be something about the settings that mean AU can't see it anymore. But I can't work out what, since security is the same.
    Any ideas would be great!

  • Can I use BB Pearl with iMac and still with PC as well?

    Hi. I've been using my BB pearl to synch with my PC for work (contacts/calendar/email). My personal computer is an iMac and I'd like to be able to synch the calendar and contacts to my BB pearl also. Is this possible? If so, how? Thanks for the help!

  • Sony DVD-R 1x - 8x compatible with iMAC G5 isight?

    I just purchased a box of Sony DVD-R and after reading the warning on the box I'm worried that it could somehow damage my MAC.
    It reads: "Always check if your drive is compatible as using this disc on some drives/recorders might damage the disc or device."
    How can I check if the Sony DVD-R 1x-8x is compatible with my iMAC?
    Thanks for your help.

    Lots of people report successfully using Sony disks. I myself prefer TDK or Fuji, but Sony will work just fine.
    I assume that they are the full-sized disks and not the mini-DVDs that are used in a lot of camcorders. If so, I can't imagine how that disk would damage any drive.

  • Systemd: Use instantiated unit with path

    Hello,
    I have a systemd unit that should do a commit on a specific path. Since there are more then one path / repos, I want to use an instantiated unit for that (the stuff with @ in the unit name):
    ~/.config/systemd/user % cat [email protected]
    [Unit]
    Description=Auto commit for instance.
    [Service]
    Type = oneshot
    Nice = 10
    # git returns 1 if there is nothing to commit
    SuccessExitStatus=1
    WorkingDirectory = %I # also tried %i
    ExecStart = /usr/bin/sh -c 'echo %i > wd'
    ExecStart = /usr/bin/sh -c 'echo %i >> wd'
    ExecStart = /usr/bin/sh -c 'echo `pwd` >> wd'
    ExecStart = /usr/bin/git add --all .
    ExecStart = /usr/bin/git commit -a -m "Automatic commit."
    It seems that using %i or %I as working directory does not work. When I do systemctl --user start git-commit@/home/florian/timer.test.service the journal prints:
    Aug 19 18:43:01 asaru systemd[375]: Starting Auto commit for instance....
    Aug 19 18:43:01 asaru git[4761]: fatal: Not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git
    Aug 19 18:43:01 asaru systemd[375]: [email protected]: main process exited, code=exited, status=128/n/a
    Aug 19 18:43:01 asaru systemd[375]: Failed to start Auto commit for instance..
    Aug 19 18:43:01 asaru systemd[375]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.
    and wd (created in ~) contains
    -home-florian-timer.test
    -home-florian-timer.test
    /home/florian
    Any ideas how I can change the working directory to the directory given by the instance name?
    Thx!

    I've brought that to the systemd mailing list and learned a lot. Indeed it's possible without a wrapper.

  • How to use Aiprort Express with iMac DV

    Hello,
    I'd like to use an Airport Express with an old iMac DV SE 400mhz. It's running Tiger. All I need it to do is run Airtunes. And I need a solution that doesn't require me to scan eBay for an old airport card, because I need to try to make this happen in the next couple days. Any ideas?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Do you currently have an Ethernet network? If so, could the AirPort Express (AX) be connected to this Ethernet network? If so, there is no need to make your iMac DV wireless at all. It can stream music over Ethernet to the AX.
    router <-+-> iMac
    .........|-> AX
    If you do need to make your iMac DV wireless but don't want to get an AirPort card, you will want an Ethernet wireless adapter. Examples of Ethernet wireless adapters are the Linksys WET11, Linksys WET54G, and the Buffalo Technology WLI-TX4-G54HP bridge.
