Using US iphone 4 in Europe

Is there a way to use the camera, apps, Wifi and GPS of the iphone 4 and not have the possibility of receiving text messages and calls while overseas? I do not want to unlock the phone and get sims from other countries. Nor do I want to get international roaming from AT&T.
I've read about airplane mode (haven't gotten my iphone yet) but from what I've read that turns everything off except apps and music. I've also read that you can specifically go in and turn wifi back on. But what about GPS? I'd like to use skype (or something else) for calls and some form of maps (integrated with GPS) while in Europe.
If airplane mode is off and for some reason the phone is turned off or the battery dies, will airplane mode still be on when the phone is turned back on or will I have to remember to turn airplane mode on every time I turn the phone on?

Everything you stated can be done.
After Airplane Mode is enabled, you can turn wi-fi on and I believe Bluetooth for Bluetooth stereo headphones, but you can't turn on GPS or location services.
When Airplane mode is enabled when powering the iPhone off, it will be enabled when powering the iPhone on. I do this when flying. Turn on Airplane mode before powering my iPhone off when instructed before take-off. When powering my iPhone back on when instructed it is OK to do so, Airplane mode is enabled.

Can I use my iPhone in Europe?

Indeed you can. Beware of data roaming, charges, however, where you are charged through the nose for a data connection abroad. Your phone company may sell overseas data plans, or you may consider getting a SIM card for one of the providers of the country you're visiting.
You can turn off data roaming in Settings --> General --> Network --> Turn Data Roaming to 'off'.

  • Can I use my iPhone in Europe and will it work as a hotspot for my iPad?

Can I use my iPhone in Europe and will it work as a hotspot for my iPad?

It didn't work for me during my February 2013 visit to Switzerland. The Personal Hotspot feature on my iPhone 4S works fine when I am in the US. Upon arrival in Switzerland, my phone connected to the Swisscom network. Phone calls, SMS, Web, and E-mail worked fine on the iPhone. Funny is the Personal Hotspot feature completely disappeared from the settings menu while there. It reappeared once I was back in the US.

  • Question about using the iPhone in Europe without making calls.

I wanted to know if I could use my iPhone on a trip to Europe. I don't plan to use the phone to make any kind of calls, just to check and send e-mail and maybe use a messenger to communicate.
Would I be charged in anyway? What steps could I take to avoid any.
    Thank you.

Regarding calls when roaming internationally, the following was copied from this link.
    http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/roaming/faq.jsp
    When your device is on:
Calls that you do not answer that are routed to the AT&T voicemail system will be charged as an international roaming incoming call to your device.
In addition, the foreign carrier's routing of that call to the AT&T voicemail system may generate an outgoing call charge from your device's location to the U.S.
These charges apply even if the caller disconnects from the voicemail system without leaving a message.

  • Will I be able to use my iPhone in Europe?

I'm going to Europe (germany and bosnia) in a few days. I currently have the iPhone 4 with the data plan and blah blah and I was wondering if I could use my camera, go on twitter, facebook, instagram if i'm connected to a wifi network and not get charged extra money? I wouldn't call or text anyone just use twitter facebook, and my camera. Would I get charged extra money?

Try this. Turn on airplane mode. Once that is active, try to turn on wifi and connect to your home wifi or a public wifi hotspot.
If you can do that here, you can do that process in Europe. With airplane mode all the the radios are turned off and you won't be charged roaming.

  • Have you used an Iphone in Europe?

Am traveling to Europe in May.  Want advice from others who have used an Iphone4 while traveling.  Thanks.

    Hello hellie68!
That's sounds like an awesome trip! gina7239 has some great ideas for your travel! You can turn off the cellular data, or you can put the phone in airplane mode. Settings>Airplane mode. WiFi is a great alternative while traveling internationally. I have also provided you a link with our global rates. You will need to make sure to call our global team before you leave to setup any international plans. Their number is 908-559-4899.

  • I am currently living in Europe and using my iPhone on airplane mode only with wifi. My iMessage switched to my e-mail account and when I go to the settings to switch back to my phone number that isn't an option to click on. How do I get it back?

I am currently living in Europe and using my iPhone on airplane mode when I have wifi. My iMessage is switched to my icloud e-mail address and when I go to my setting to switch it back to my number, it is grayed out and not an option to click. This was working before with my number so I know that it's not from being on airplane mode. How do I get it back to my number?

They need to go into their settings>messages and make sure iMessage is on.  Also they should click on the send & receive button to make sure their phone number is selected.

  • Can I use old iPhone 4S in Europe for WiFi, w/o cellular service? A few Qs not found in Support Community-

I wish to upgrade to iPhone 6, but first want to know if I can use my iPhone 4S for camera, iMessaging and apps (i.e. What’s App) on Wifi after it is disconnected from U.S. Verizon network?
iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.2 (reluctant to upgrade to 8.1.2), Verizon, U.S. only
Mac Mini, OSX 10.9.5 (reluctant to upgrade to OSX Yosemite)
I’ve read all of the old posts (2011 thru July 2014), but still have questions.  This is what I understand:
Upgrade iOS and apps with iTunes, before transferring to new iPhone 6
Change the name of my old iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201997 (if I wish to name my new iPhone what my old one was called)
Enable airplane mode, then re-enable just wifi
    Activate new iPhone
Transfer data to new iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2109
    QUESTIONS:
Q: When connected to WiFi in England, Italy and Sicily - do I keep it in Airplane Mode even though it has been disconnected from Verizon and I will have an active iPhone 6 on my Verizon account being used by my husband at home in the U.S.?
Q: Will there be a problem sync’ing to iTunes in the future, or my Mac Mini?  Will it conflict with my new iPhone 6?  Or is it just considered a different device, once it has a new name.
Q: How can I message my husband in the U.S. with the iPhone 6 from Europe using my old iPhone 4S on Wifi only?  Do I use my iCloud account, like I do from my Mac Mini to my iPhone?  Or can I set up a new iMessage account on the old iPhone 4S
I appreciate any insights and answers.  Thanks in advance!
    Daphne

It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.

  • How can I transfer video taken with my iPhone to my iPad WITHOUT using a computer or iTunes? I'm going to Europe for a month and want to use my iPhone to take pics and video, then come back to the hotel room and use my iPad to edit/store each evening.

How can I transfer video taken with my iPhone to my iPad WITHOUT using a computer or iTunes? I'm going to Europe for a month and want to use my iPhone to take pics and video, then come back to the hotel room and use my iPad to edit/store each evening. I don't want to use my iPad to take the video...too large/bulky. And I WON'T have a computer with me...I purchased the iPad to take with me so I could use the RDC to my home computer and avoid taking my computer at all. Is this possible?

here is a cheaper solution than camera kit and a lot easier if you have WIFI available.
I use the PhotoSync APP (I think its a $1.99) will transfer videos and photos over WIFI to any other IOS device or even PC/MAC. Great app since I like doing video and photos on my IPHONE and transfer to IPAD2 without synching through computer or doing cloud based storage.
You can even send photos/videos from your MAC/PC to your IOS devices that way too. Makes it so much easier.

Keywords here as: My iphone 4 is factory unlocked
If your iphone is factory unlocked, your perfectly set to place a sim card in Europe and Go!
@Tim - the main point is "factory unlocked" not to get confused with AT&T service provider's lock.
Here in Canada Apple Store sells iPhones factory unlocked and many people prefer to pay for the phone out right and recieve an factory unlocked, not only to be free of any service providers contracts but to enjoy usage of your iPhone as you travel the world.
Conclusion: YES you can use your "iphone 4 is factory unlocked" in Europe with a sim card

I do travel to Europe several day a year. It is true that I can use the Iphone 5 in other country with no trouble ??

If your phone is locked to AT&T, you can certainly travel & use your phone, but you'll have to get AT&T to provision your account for International use...select the country/countries & plan. This is very expensive, as the roaming partners set the rates & you generally pay through the nose.
And no, you can't use a local sim if your phone is locked to AT&T.
