Using US MacBooks in the UK

I am trying to use my US Macbook in the UK. I tried to connect it to the power outlet botn with a conventional adapter and with a voltage converter; but in neither case does the adapter seem to be satisfied with the kind of power it gets. The light on the plug-in turns green for a few seconds, then red for a few more seconds, and then goes off completely so that the computyer runs on battery power. What do I have to do to connect it to a UK outlet? I greatly appreciate any help.

Welcome to discussions. The tech spec says "Line voltage: 100-240V AC". Therefore there should be no issues with plugging into a UK power point, assuming you use a converter to change the two pin US plug into the three pin UK plug. Does the transformer say 100-240V on it, as this will confirm that the specification page of the Apple website match your hardware.

  • Using a Macbook in the UK and US

Can Macbooks be used in both the UK and US?? I'm going to the States soon and I'm considering buying a Macbook but will predominently be using it in the UK - Is this possible and safe?

    Welcome to the forums.
Yes, it can be used worldwide. You will need a different plug adapter for your charger, but the charger itself works on 110 and 220 V.
The only possible issue is with playing DVDs (purchased movies) - you are limited to 5 changes of the region code for your DVD drive, and the US and UK are different regions. Search the forums for many posts on DVD regions.
    Hope this helps...

  • Using iTunes, MacBook and the external HDD.

Hi there, however much I love iTunes, I absolutely despize the lack of function when it comes to splitting the music library between my MacBook and an external HDD.
I have a rather large Library and it is a real issue when using a HDD limited MacBook.
Why is there no simple function to allow a user to pass data back and forth between these?
iMovie has a very simple and wonderfully easy to use 'drag n drop' function which allows a user to move video between any or multiple external HDD and the HDD on the MacBook.
When connected, the media on the HDD is available to use in iMovie. When it is not connected, only the media on the MacBooks HDD is available.
Would it be conceivable to adopt a similar system whereby iTunes would 'show' an external HDD and allow a user to drag and drop media straight over?
Now THAT would be amazing! Please, it is terribly limiting and self-defeating to have a portable device without being able to EASILY move ones media from a 'home' based large external HDD and the more versatile, smaller portable MacBook HDD.
iMovie does it, can you adapt iTunes to do the same?
    Yours,

click here and here for information.
    also, peruse this user tip:
    In iTunes 9.
    iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Set the iTunes media folder location to the external.
Then select the movie files (or any files in iTunes) and right click Consolidate.
This will copy only the movies to the external location.
After it finishes, iTunes prefs -> Advanced and set the iTunes media folder location back to the internal. This will tell iTunes to use the internal drive for new files.
You can then delete the movies from \Music\iTunes\ on the internal to free up space.
To copy a movie back to the internal, simply right click - Consolidate (since you pointed iTunes back to the internal).
just edit these instructions to meet your needs.

  • How can I power my macbook in the car.

Want to use my macbook in the car.  The power inverters that I have are not working with the current power cord that come with macbook pro.  Any options ?
What are the power invert spect that will enable the macbook to be charged /used in the car ?
    Thank you

    Hey Kanadakid
    Recommendation for your consideration:
I use an inverter I purchased at Kmart on sale for about $30.00.
These devices hooked up through the cigg. lighter "convert" your 12 volts D.C. from your car (actually about 13.8 volts ) to 110 volts A.C.(mine 400 watts). It even has a 1" fan and fully fused.
Mine is about 6"x4"x2" and has a near perfect sine wave output: I put in on a 'scope to check it out.
Can run even moderate size TV, Stereos. I plan to charge my brand new iPhone 4S (64G) using it. Staches under the seat.

  • Can i use my macbook pro 13" (late 2011) to play Games?

I know that this is perhaps silly question but i just curious. Most games playable using graphic card such as Nvidia or ATI,but mine don't have any such graphic cards but it has built-in Intel Graphics 3000 and in the Apple website, the macbook pro that shown able to play games is 15" and 17". Is it adequate to play big games such as Splinter cell conviction or assasin's creed on my 13" MBP?

Your experience playing the game will be sub-optimal. If you're going to be doing any sort of "real gaming" and want to play more modern games on newer engines, the shared GPU just isn't going to cut it. Sorry, but that's the way it is.
No MacBook Pro is a first rate gaming machine, per se, just not designed for such. If you're a serious gamer & want to use a MacBook Pro, the only realistic choices are the 15" or 17" which have dedicated GPU's.

  • Can I use my MacBook Pro for 2 things at once?

I have a MacBook Pro with Retina display, 13". i am about to buy a TV. When using HDMI, can I let's say, play a movie on the TV and still use my MacBook for the internet? I think you understand what I mean. Thank you for your answers!

Yes you can. OS X is quite good at multitasking.

  • How can i use my macbook as a server

How can i use my macbook as the server of my home network?

Depends on what you want to do with it. To operate as a full fledged "Server" you will need OSX Server Edition software. For simple server operations like file sharing, you can just adjust the sharing options in your preferences.

  • I have 2 macbooks each with an account for me and one for my wife. I use one Macbook logged in with my account and my wife uses the other Macbook only loged in on her account. We both make regular time-machine back-ups each on a separate external disk

I have 2 Macbooks each with an account for me and one for my wife. I use one Macbook logged in with my account and my wife uses the other Macbook only logged in on her account. We both make regular time-machine back-ups each on a separate external disk. Is it possible to update her account on my macbook using her external disk without overwriting my stuff on the same Macbook and vice versa?

Time Machine does not do individual accounts. It records the complete drive. So if you were to use her TM backup on your Mac it would make your Mac just like hers. Both yours and her account on your MAC.
Just copy the missing files over from her Mac to yours. If there are differennt programs on each then they would need to be installed on both.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • TS4055 How do I use my MacBook Air to access the Amazon Web Service?

How do I use my MacBook Air to access AWS (Amazon web Service)?  The information provided to me by Apple Care seems to be about allowing outside access to my MacBook.

Sorry, but does this relate to Apple Remote Desktop, Apple's software for managing networked Macs, in some way? If so, how are you using ARD in relation to Amazon's services?
