Using USB capture

Is it possible to use an HDV to USB connection to log and capture? I am using a Canon XHA1, with recorded material in HDV format. FCP is set to HDV, but the only capture device I can use is HDV FireWire, and the basic MacBook doesn't have FireWire... so now what?

MacBook doesn't have FireWire.
Wrong tool for the job. You need a Mac with a FireWire connection.
Your footage should also be stored on an external FireWire drive. USB won't cut it for video editing.

Capturing using USB cable???

Is there a way one can capture with FCP using the standard USB camera\cable ... the kind one normally finds on the digital stills cameras. Client shot a bunch of material on a tiny Samsung DV camera which only has the USB output.
I've only used firewire setups with FCP.
If FCP won't do it, is there another Apple App that might, like iMovie?

USB is definitely not reccomended for video use. Has to do with how USB use "packets" of speed to capture info, rather than a continuous stream like FW
Having said that, I know some who have been successful with USB capture .. I ain't one of them. iMovie works by the same rules, far as I know
Any way you can borrow/rent a FW DV cam or deck and just play the tapes out of that into FC ... or is your clients' cam a Hard drive cam ... that's a whole different story. If so, that material will have to be converted to DV with something like MPEG Streamclip

Capture Using USB Camera

I have a client's Canon DC 10 Mini DVD camcorder and the disc won't finalize, so we need to load it into FCP directly. On my 1st try, FCP doesn't recognize the device, but the Mac Pro sees it as an Untitled CD. Any suggestions? Thanks.

you can't capture using USB, you'll need a firewire connection in order to do that. If the cam doesn't have a connection, I'd get a hold of a mini dv camera or anything else really that has a firewire connection and do a dub from your DC 10 to the mini dv camera. then you'll have a straight dub of your footage on tape with a firewire port. there you'll be able to do a proper capture onto your computer HDD.

Why is the scan size of our epson 15Mb for PDF using image capture?

This has been plaguing us since Snow Leopard when we lost the Epson Scanner tool from Epson to Image Capture scanning using our Epson 835 Artisan.
PDF sizes are ridiculous using Image Capture.
For example, 3 pages of text using Image Capture =
15Mb
Using the same printer, same 3 pages and the builtin Epson Scanner (from the printer panel) and a USB stick =
1.2Mb
This has been happening since the SL upgrade (as mentioned) but I had hoped that Epson/Apple could get their act together on the Epson drivers for ML. Seems not to be the case. It is kind of a drag to have a Network available Scanner only to have the built in software be a bum steer. Not only that, but no relief from Epson since their Scanner program (as bad as it was UI wise, but at least you got a mail-able document) has been discontinued...
Any ideas?

This doesn't answer the question but it is a workaround.
How is the quality if you do this:
Open the PDF in Apple Preview
Choose File/Export
In Export, choose PDF format with the Quartz Filter option "Reduce File Size"
If it's ugly, there's a way to adjust the compression settings by using Apple ColorSync Utility to make a modified copy of the Reduce File Size filter with different settings. By playing with this I was able to start with a 7.1MB PDF scan from Image Capture, and export variations based on different Reduce File Size settings:
5.3MB (JPEG Max) - looks great
188KB (JPEG Min) - looks good as the 5.3 MB copy actually
40K (Automatic) - too blurry to be usable
If you were to perfect your own compression filter you could just export each PDF through Preview after scanning it, or presumably you could build some kind of drag-and-drop conversion utility in Automator although I don't know anything about Automator.
It's a workaround because I could not determine a way to apply a Quartz filter from Image Capture itself when saving a PDF.

Using Image Capture to scan with Canon Pixma MX700

I previously had trouble connecting my Canon Pixma MX700 to my MBP, but soon figured out that I needed a new high speed USB 2.0 cable, versus the old one I was trying to use it with. Doh!
So now it prints without any trouble at all, and I know that all its features - printing, scanning, fax, copier, are supposed to be compatible with Leopard.
However, I'm still having issues scanning. I Googled and found a comment somewhere that with this specific model, one has to use Image Capture for the scanning portion, instead of the Canon software.
Great, so that explained the problem I was having trying to figure out how to GET it to communicate at all with the MBP (downloaded the latest scanner driver from Canon with no result).
But it still will not scan with Image Capture. Communication is fine- the image is detected and I can see it perfectly in the Image Capture window, am able to change options, etc. Once I drag and select the image I want to scan and click the scan button, nothing happens. Or more specifically, the button will be click-able and for about two seconds it appears to be working (with the scan button substituted by a cancel button), but then the scan button will pop back up and nothing appears in the folder I specified the image to be saved to.
Now I'm completely stumped. What am I doing wrong?

With my MacBook running Leopard, I had been able to successfully scan multiple images by pressing the MX7000 scan button and capturing the images with MP Navigator. The MX700 is networked over WiFi. Early on, I learned that it seemed to be more reliable to drive this process using the scan button, rather than trying to initiate the scan from the MP Navigator UI.
However, recently things stopped working, and after the first image was scanned, subsequent scans would fail, with MP Navigator complaining about not being able to connect to the scanner. This sounds similar to the problem described in the original posting.
I went to the Canon USA support site and downloaded /installed the latest versions of the MX700 scan driver (13.9.0) and MP Navigator (1.0.4), both available under the "Drivers and Downloads" section for the MX700 support page (be sure to select "Mac OS X" from the pull-down menu).

The new updates seem to have solved the problem, and I can now scan multiple images one after the other. Again, I always initiate the scan from the button on the MX700, and always capture using MP Navigator, which has the really nice feature for creating and editing multi-page PDFs.

Can't connect the camera directly to that monitor. It only has the ADC connection. What you'd have to do is capture the footage and use the Digital Cinema Desktop to view the footage.
Can't you monitor what you have on the cameras LCD, or the Capture window?

Using the Capture function with a Capture Card

I was wondering why I can't get premiere to recognize my capture card when I try to use the capture function.

Ah, then you are out of luck. Premiere only captures via firewire.
If your camera has usb then copy content of memory or card to hard disk then import into Premiere.

Downloading Photos using Image Capture

ive never used iphoto, always preferring image capture. image capture doesn't see the phone's connected anymore but it used to. and i think i used to see the phone mount on the desktop as a connected device but dont see that anymore, either (maybe it never did?)
the phone is recognized in itunes but i dont quite see how to download my phone photos there as it says 'sync' and i dont want to do that. i just want to download the images to my computer so i dont lose them should something happen to the phone. Any ideas? i would like to continue using image capture, if at all possible anymore.

I see my iPhone in "My Computer" connected as a camera, and it lets me only access the photos I took with it, saved from a message or when I do screenshots. I'm glad it's there, otherwise there would be no way of take your photos from your iPhone.
If you have photos in the Camera Roll but still don't see it in "My Computer" maybe you disconnected the iPhone too brutally last time. I know one time I accidently connecteddisconnectedconnected etc a few times very fast the usb cable and then the iPhone wouldn't be recognized on the PC either with iTunes or in the "My Computer". Which scared me lol. But then I tried connecting it to another usb port on the PC and it's working now. Try that. Other than that I can't really see how to fix it . Maybe a PC formating or a iPhone restore but I doubt you want to do that.

The EXACT answer will depend on which OS and iPhoto you are using, but they all work as follows.
Provided that your Mac recognizes your camera's memory card, you should be able to use iPhoto's
FILE > IMPORT TO LIBRARY menu command, even if connecting your camera does not automatically find ("pop up") iPhoto. If you want your Mac to ALWAYS launch one specific app (such as iPhoto) when you connect your camera, you select which app via with your Mac's "Image Capture" application as follows:
Launch your Mac's "Image Capture" application and search Image Capture > Help for "Transferring items from your camera" (without the quotation marks.)

Need to generate a TTL pulse of 3 ms using USB Daq 6361

Hi all,
I need to generate a TTL pulse of 3 ~ 5 ms to trigger my external device. I am using USB daq 6361 with BNC connectors. I tried to use this examples(attached) but was not succesfull , can any one help me out in this, I just want a TTL pulse out to trigger my device. I tried to modify the example to see the wave form out but all it shows is a straight line. I want to generate a TTL pulse as soon as my program starts.
Am I using wrong example? should I use somethis else to generate the pulse. please let me know.

Creating DAQmx items in Project Explorer saves the DAQmx object properties as part of the *.lvproj file. This can be very useful when the Task configuration does not change in the built application and you seldom want to use the task elsewhere. If you want to make minor tweaks to configuration of the run-time app there is even a human readable text file in the build output where properties like scale offsets, timing rates or ranges can be modified without redeploying a new app.

Equim A60 Unable to use USB 2 TV Cards

Hi,
I bought a new equim A60 with the following specification:
Processor speed: 2.8GHZ
Ram: 512MB
Hardisk: 40GB
I have tried to use MSI VOX USB2 TV card and Terratec TV card on the notebook but all did not work with my notebook eventhough it worked with other notebooks and my desktop PC.
I tried the same cards with my friends own which is also Equim A60 and it did not work too. I upgraded my bios but still the same story. Can anyone help me out or this type of computers is not meant to be used with USB 2 Tv cards?

It's strange that you are having problems with your USB TV Cards.
The only possiblilty I can think of is that there's an issue with
the USB port on the A60 series maybe it's unable to deliver the
required data rate.
I'm buying a CameraMate VideoSafe USB capture box this weekend I
hope it wont be suffering similar problems as it would probably
push my laptop to it's limit much like your USB TV cards.

Fmle TURN OFF WHEN I CHOOSE USB CAPTURE DEVICE

USING WINDOWS 7 64 BIT SOFTWARE when i turn on fmle it comes on and uses the built in webcam on the computer but when i switch to the usb capture device it turns off. ANY ONE KNOW HOT TO FIX THIS

Installing WIM file using USB

Hi,
I want to install captured image using USB. Not sure where I went wrong. here is what I did.
I captured an image(windows 8.1 x64 ) using MDT . I have used the captured image in WDS it works fine. But I wanted to use USB (as the file size is 6GB cant use DVD) to install on remote machines.
Than I converted it to ISO. I followed a step in http://www.ehow.com/how_5750929_convert-wim-file-iso-file.html
Finally I created bootable USB using Rufus (also tried ultraiso). easy ah
But when I boot from the USB it is giving me "windows failed to start"error as if there is no windows file on the USB.
Can anyone please help me.

You can use the wim you captured, and create a new task sequence in MDT. You should then be able to create media to a folder, and copy the files to a USB drive. Once booted, the process should be similar to the WDS process you have used, assuming you used
a MDT task sequence for the WDS deployment.
