Using VGA display without EDID possible?

Hello,
I plan to buy a Mac mini in the near future but I have a rather specific concern about the display connectivity in advance:
Is it possible to use an analogue VGA display that doesn't deliver any EDID/DDC ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDID ) with the current Mac mini via the Display Port-VGA adapter.
I'm asking this because a PC with nVidia GF9400 onboard graphics and Windows 7 or Vista immediately turns off the VGA signal when the OS is completely booted.
I have a MBP (4,1/Early '08) and could use the display in question with the DVI-VGA adapter after manually setting the correct resulution and refresh rate.
Can I safely assume that the Mac mini's GF 320M behaves the same way with the Display Port-VGA adapter? I don't have any device with a display port output yet so I can't really test it myself.
There's a concerning customer comment to the Display Port-VGA adapter in the German Apple Online Store stating that this customer couldn't connect a Samsung LCD TV with the adapter.
Thank you very much for the help!

Thanks for the tool tip. Seems like the display has EDID after all:

  • Is it possible to force the Macbook to output a VGA signal without EDID

Im an audio visual integrator and I'm constantly running into this issue that if the mac doesn't have EDID present it will not output VGA signal. Quite often we will convert VGA inputs to just RGBHV (or 5BNC) to run to a display or projector. Normally this works fine with most laptops but unfortunately not macs. I've used things like EDID minders in the past to get around this issue but I'm hoping there might be a way to get around this on the software side.

No, the video card cannot be exchanged - you have a pretty decent GPU there; not sure why you'd want to switch it out. You can upgrade the RAM to a maximum of 16GBs. Apple recommends upgrading in matching pairs, so I don't really think I'd try 4GB and 8GB stick.
Both Crucial and OWC have memory available for the new Macs. Both are reputable dealers and know Macs well and I would only buy from these sources (and I would buy Crucial, were it me).
Although your Mac didn't come with a users manual outlining the installation of the additional RAM, you can download the late 2011 model users guide as the models themselves are almost identical.
Good luck - write back with any questions.

  • Using External Display WITHOUT mirroring or extended desktop

I asked this question about a month ago and it seems to have been deleted for some reason.
I have a broken screen on my Intel iMac G5 for reasons I don't wanna get into here, but trust me, it's not covered under the warranty. I have a great Sony LCD HD Monitor plugged in by VGA and mirroring displays. I have noticed that the computer is a LOT slower since connecting the alternate display, and I think it's because processing the smae information on both displays at once is using up too much system resources. I DON'T want an extended desktop either, since the iMac screen is broken.
Is there a way to turn off the iMac screen completely and ONLY use the external monitor WITHOUT mirroring or extended desktop?
If not, how can I improve my machine's performance while mirroring displays? Is more RAM the answer?

    Hello howoriginal
    Let me see
    1) OK sounds like the Sony is working for you in mirroring.
    2) Which iMac do you have Intel or G-5? (Intel's are not G-5s)
    3) Don't think you'll be able to turn off the iMac display. (you know I want to ask)
    4) Mirroring should not realy affect your performance. Keeping everything "gathered" up to Sony display might help you from misplacing windows and folders.
    5) If it's an early Intel Core Duo with 512MB then "yes" more ram to 1, 1.5 or 2GB will boost your performance.
    6) Other thing to help performance are OnyX maintenance and quitting App's from menu, not just closing App's with red button that you are not using.
That's all I have for now!

  • Using Cinema Display without apple comp.

My friend is getting rid of his Apple Display (His mac broke and his parents are buying him a pc).
He's offered to give me his 30 inch Cinema HD Display ( part # M9179LL/A )
and I just wanna know what i can use it for, not having a MAC.
Can i use it with a PC? or even as a TV? how do i do that, My friend tried to connect it to his cable box, and PC and got nothing? will it work with anything other than a MAC??

It will work with a PC if it has a dual-link DVI graphics card. It cannot be used directly as a TV, but you can get TV adapters for a computer to watch and record TV.

  • When using multiple displays, is it possible to only have full screen zoom (universal access) only effect one display?

I am visually impaired which makes it difficult for me to use computers. The zoom feature in Mac OS is extremly useful to me and is the first reason I choose mac over windows. Although, now that I've been using a mac for 8 years, I would pick a mac any day! For my work flow, I utilize two displays. It would help me greatly if there was a way to only effect one display with the zoom feature.
    Thank you for your input,
    Zachary

You can set the zoom to ONLY follow your mouse (And adjust the size of the "zoom window" that follows it). I used to use this with Quick time Editing when I had a 13" iMac.

  • Using restore points WITHOUT flashback possible (in Oracle Express versio)?

For development I am using Oracle Express 10g version rather than Enterprise version.
Unfortunately the "Flashback" feature is NOT available in Express version (only in Enterprise).
I can CREATE a RESTORE POINT but I can NOT go back to it with a Flashback instruction like
    FLASHBACK DATABASE TO RESTORE POINT myrp234;
Is there a workaround for this in Oracle Express?
Being able to CREATE a RESTORE POINT is useless if I cannot go back to this RP.
So I guess there must be another way?

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

  • MacBook suddenly won't detect my display, Using Mini Display Port to VGA?

MacBook suddenly won't detect my display, Using Mini Display Port to VGA?

dohdoh1985, I have the exact same problem also! I recently bought a 42" RCA LCD TV. I connected my MacBook Pro to my TV using a Dynex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter that I got from BestBuy. It worked great until I upgraded to Mac OS 10.6.4 and then it suddenly stopped working. Same TV, same settings, same cables, same adapter. Nothing changed since the last time it worked except that my OS was upgraded to 10.6.4, so i am assuming that is the culprit. The symptoms are EXACTLY the same as what dohdoh1985 described; when I plug in the TV, the laptop display flashes (3 times) as though it is detecting an external display and the picture on the TV briefly goes from blue to black for about 1 second then back to blue. The TV does not appear in the display menu / control panel and there is no sign that the MacBook detected it. I went through the usual troubleshooting steps (reset PRAM, checked connections, tv settings, etc) but nothing worked. Other HDMI sources (i.e. Blu-ray player) work fine on the TV using the same HDMI cable on the same port so there is nothing wrong with the cable, the TV or the TV's input settings.
Meanwhile, I can still connect my MacBook to my external ViewSonic monitor at work without any problems. It's just the TV that's not working.
I cancelled my cable subscription a while ago since I only watch shows online nowadays and this was my only way of watching TV shows, so I'm quite upset.
    Apple, please help!

    Hi,
    Yes you can,
CALL TRANSACTION ta { [AND SKIP FIRST SCREEN] .
This addition suppresses the display of a screen of the initial dynpro of a called dialog transaction. The addition AND SKIP FIRST SCREEN suppresses the first screen under these prerequisites:
For the initial dynpro, in the Screen Painter the own dynpro number must not be specified as the next screen number.
All mandatory input fields of the initial dynpro must be filled completely and with the correct values by the SPA/GPA parameters
If these prerequisites are met, that screen of the dynpro is displayed that is specified in the Screen Painter as the next dynpro of the initial dynpro.

  • Is it possible to use 2 displays with the mac mini

is it possible to use 2 displays with the mac mini

I wanted an extended desktop using 2 monitors.
    I am using a Dell Ultrasharp ( has 1 VGA and 1 DVI-D) and a LG W2286 (has 2 HDMI, 1 DVI-D and 1 VGA)
I ran into a similar issue where initially the mac would not detect the 2 displays and I thought I would share my solution.  I have a Mac Mini 10.8.2 i7 Late 2012.
I bought a "Cable Matters" brand Mini Display Port | Thunderbolt to DVI Male Cable to have dual monitors.
I am also using the included in the box  HDMI to DVI-D Adapter from Apple.
    Initial configuration was:
Mini-Display (Thunderbolt connector) to DVI connected to the LG DVI-D input.
Apple HDMI to DVI Dongle connected to the Dell DVI-D input.
What happened was that my desktop was on the LG clear as day but OSX did not see the dell monitor.
I called apple support and they could not figure out why the mini cant see the dell monitor. I think I discovered that the mac mini could not support 2 dvi monitors.
    I switched the monitor connections.
    The connections that works:
HDMI out to HDMI in on the LG using a standard HDMI cable.
Display port | Thunderport to DVI-D on the Dell's DVI-D in.

You really have to mess with the resoluton, espescially the refresh rate, as it varies from projector to projector, monitor to monitor. Even within the same brand! Because so many manufacturers are trying so many different things to become the next cool kid on the block, and the way the formats are being configured that's now part of the game.
That's why so many professionally produced corporate shows hire a dedicated projectionist for the video presentations. Too many bugs in the honey.
Refresh & sesolution are the first things to look at.
Just so you know that colors in PowerPoint PC, and PowerPoint Mac, don't exactly match... go figure.
I forgot to mention another thing, sometimes it's the projector that needs to be tweaked.
