Using VirtualPC to run internet connection

Hi, I live in Africa and DSL is just arriving. THe DSL provider insists that we use his ADSL modem which is Windows-only compatible. I have installed the modem driver on Virtual PC 7.0 and the software operates, recognizing the modem (connected via USB port). However, the softwawre never shows that a connection is established. Is it possible for VirtualPC to control the main connection to the internet, or am I barking up the wrong tree? Even if it works for VPC, will the mac recognize the network connection? Thanks.

In the UK we had similar issues however depending on the protocols used a third party ethernet modem will work with the DSL connection regardless of what the provider says.
Even if

I don't see why you couldn't use AirPlay as a stand alone thing. Obviously you'll need wifi, but as for Internet I really don't know. Again, Internet shouldn't have any say but it might.
Test it out, unplug the cable to your modem. If it's a modem/wifi router then unplug the DSL cable or cable internet cable.

Yes by creating what is called an ad-hoc wireless network with your Mac acting as a wireless router providing internet access for a device such as your iPhone or with another computer via the ad-hoc wireless network created.

Probably not normally, Apple has removed some of the hidden features of the USB dongle via a software update for iPad. One of those features was playing host to hard drives, keyboards, etc.

Using Airport Express as internet connection for one Mac and one PC

Will probably be judged a complete dork for this question. I have successfully set up my Imac G5 to run an internet connection through an Airport express. My partner runs a PC (Windows XP) and I want to connect this too. Have installed a USB wireless card on the PC, and installed Airport Utility, but it just won't find the Airport Express - it will however find the Imac with something like 96% signal strength. So I set up a network on the Mac and have successfully linked into it with the PC, but it soon comes up with a connectivity problem that will not allow internet browsing. So two questions - can I connect two computers to the Airport Express at once for internet browsing, or do I have to do it through linking the PC to a wireless network? If the latter is the route - any ideas on what the connectivity issue will be? Help!

No, not if the AirPort Express "joins" the wireless network.
No, I do not want to join a network.
It is possible to have the AirPort Express "create" a separate wireless network that would not have access to the Internet, but if you did this, you would need to log off of your normal network....(losing your Internet connection) and then log onto the AirPort Express network when you wanted to listen to AirPlay.
Then, when you wanted to have Internet access, you would have to log off of the AirPort Express network and log back onto your normal wireless network.
Ok, I understand that it is not possible to use airport express only for sound streaming while having an Internet connection at the same time. Airport express does need to join a network if I want sound streaming next an Internet connection. I wanted airport express not to get into way of my Internet connection because in this case the sound streaming messes up sometimes. When I configure airport express only as a sound output, the problems I encounter fade away but then I cannot access to the Internet. Anyhow thanks a lot for the answer.

IPhone using Mac Mini's internet connection sharing, stops loading webpages

Bought an iPhone 1 hour ago.
I'm sharing my internet connection to my iBook and MacBook from my Mac Mini. Works fine.
Can't connect using the iPhone.
It will detect the network, it will show full network reception, but it will only load webpages for the first 10 seconds and then stops.
Tried removing the password, fixing a channel, resetting the iPhone (full reset), the "forget this network" trick, nothing worked.
It will load web pages in the first 10 seconds of detecting my open network. Its highly frustrating...
Any suggestions? Maybe using the restore option from iTunes instead of the reset ones from iPhone? Will this try to reinstall the latest firmware?

Very similar case here -- I bought an iPhone just yesterday, set it up with internet sharing on my Mac Mini, and am getting random (but frequent) failures connecting via wifi. Small web pages can get through sometimes, large (or complex) web pages almost always hang during loading, e-mail pretty much never works.
However, using "edge" works just fine.
I've nosed around these forums a bit (and googled for this problem a bit), and it does seem like there are a number of users having this sort of trouble. However, some folks with this problem have noted that they can run wifi just fine at other hotspots. (I haven't taken my phone to another hotspot yet, maybe I'll try tomorrow...) And I've shared my internet connection to other PCs from my Mini successfully before. So, in my opinion, this problem does not appear to be an actual hardware fault in either the iPhone or the Mac Mini, but rather some disagreement between the settings chosen on both sides; my guess is that this'll take a driver modification in either or both to fix, rather than a replacement of either the iPhone or the Mini.
Just my current guess, though.

IMail 5.2: How do I optimize it for use on a slow internet connection?

I recently upgraded to Lion OS X v 10.7.3, and i like iMail 5.2 when I work from my office or home.
BUT, when I am working in the field I often have access to only glacially slow internet via an internet modem, and iMail takes FOREVER to download my messages. Way longer than my pre Lion version of iMail.
Is there a way to optimize iMail 5.2 in order to optimize for slow internet connections? For instance, to partially retrieve large messages? Or to somehow deactivate all the synchronizing and other Activity that goes on in the background?

Use a web based email account like GMail or HushMail, because they are a website and people access their emails from many different machines (phones, computers, slow or fast connections) the site can optimize things better than a dumb mail server.
It's possible to auto-forward a copy of your present email accounts to have them on the web based accounts too, don't know exactly how to go about it, but many people elsewhere also have the same desire so it's obvious something like that is being used.

Using Muse without an internet connection

This morning, while my internet connection was down, I was somewhat surprised – alarmed actually – that I am unable to preview a site build using Muse. Neither the Preview tab nor Preview in browser function would work. The browser preview appeared shortly after my connection was restored (I had since shut Muse down). Surely the software is able to function 100% without a constant link to Adobe?
(FWIW, while the connection was down Acrobat would stop responding after a viewing a few pages of a PDF)

There maybe something else causing your issue. You should have no problems previewing pages without an Internet connection as long as all the content is on your local machine. If you are getting some remote content such as Google Maps or perhaps if you have some content in the head section such as Google Analytics that requires a connection it may cause you to not load the page.
Just straight Muse pages stored locally on your own computer should have no problem at all.

Using cellphone as an internet connection?

Ive been searching everywhere today to try and find out how to use my phones connection for internet. My comcast has been pinging 400-600ms the last few days so i'm looking for alternatives

i just got it finally connect so never mind.
need to make sure everything is one default for your phone and turn on internet and bluetooth sharing for the macbook.
open network preferences and create a bluetooth connection if you dont already have one. Configuration set as MediaNet (for AT&T) or whatever the setting name is for your internet connection on the phone itself.

Hi there!
Without a data plan, you can't DL anything directly to your BB from the internet. If, from your PC/browser, you find things that you like AND you find out from whoever it is that produces it that they have a version that you can do this with, then you could DL it to your PC and copy it to your BB with your BB tethered to your PC as a USB drive.

Using Photoshop CC Without Internet Connection

I'm new to this forum. I did attempt to find out if my question had been previously asked and could not find it using the search engine or in FAQs.
My question; is Photoshop CC functional when there is no Internet connection? I find myself overseas without or with virtually no Internet connection nearly six months of the year.

A continuous internet connection is not required. But Photoshop will attempt to verify subscription status every 30 days. However, if you have an annual plan, it'll work for 99 days before shutting down.

IMPO, no Internet connection is definitely fine for Nokia Maps as the software uses offline map data to guide your drive.
BUT, the phone must be under your mobile provider's coverage as it needs A-GPS to help lock the position. Othewise, it would take ages to lock or might be not working at all.

Can i use time capsule without internet connection?

I bought Time Capsule 4th Gen. 2Tb without knowig that it is a router. I already have Netgear N900, and I don't know if I can use them both together. Currently, it looks like I cannot connect to Apple Time Capsule (ATC) without the internet connection. I neither have to figure out how to use ATC without the internet, or figure out way to use both of the router at the same time. Please help me with this problem. This is my first MacbookPro, and everything is new to me. I would appreciate any kind of help! Thank you!

Ok .. this is pretty easy.
You plug the WAN port on TC into the N900 LAN port by ethernet.
Open the airport utility on the Mac.
Simply allow it to automatically setup and it should select bridge mode.. if not just jump in at the end .. click on the edit under the summary and go to the network tab and select bridge.
Then go to the wireless tab and make sure you are creating a wireless name.. you can give it the same name as the N900 same security same password.. this is called roaming network.
Or use a different name.. use short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
I have given a different name to 5ghz.
It will not matter which wireless you connect to but the TC is faster on the 5ghz for backups.
