Using vocalive with Garageband

I was wondering about how some of you are using Vocalive in conjunction with Garageband. The way I see it, here are the options.
1. Export your song from garageband, then import it into Vocalive, do your vocals thenexport the final project. (this will require you to purchase the in-app 8 track audio mixer for $14.99)
2. Use two ipads (very expensive method but you may have 2 in your household, I do) and sing through Vocalive on 1 and plug into second ipad (I'm using irig).
3. Is there and easier way just using one ipad?

Did you get a 1st Gen or 2nd gen Axiom? You can only use the 2nd gen's faders and knobs etc with GB by downloading and installing the Directlink plugin. However, according to this http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.directlink M-Audio document you can only use Directlink with GB 09.

I just purchased Apogee Duet 2 and am using it with Garageband 11. I am getting iTunes playbacks through the headphone monitors as per quick startup directions. When I open Garageband I get the same identical stack of guitar and on pedal displayed.  I get no sound from the guitar.   I believe I have the set up exactly as per diagram and cannot figure things out.  I am relatively green at this - my best intentioned purchase now feels like a nightmare!!  Help!!

Yes, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard:

but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:

  • Air or Pro for Recording vocals with GarageBand or PT and Producing

I'm considering buying a MacBook and would like to get a new Air. I will be using it mainly for recording my vocals on beats that I have bought on iTunes. I'm also going to be taking a couple of Coursera classes on music production. Can the new Air's handle GarageBand or Pro Tools well? I've been using my iPhone 4S with GarageBand to record but I would like to do more editting of my vocals with Pro Tools. The reason I like the Air is b/c it is light and easy to transport.

One thing with vocalists, I can think of, is to show them the input device, and have them watch the clip meter. After a few takes, if they are somewhat savvy at singing into a mic, they'll start to back off on strong notes, and moving in on subtle notes. If you watch a pro singer on stage, you'll see them pulling the mic in close for soft stuff, and backing it way off for the strong notes. In the studio, the same techniques can be used, but the person has to back away, rather than a hand held mic pulled away.
Hardware can help this to an extent, but the singer has to take some action to get the best performance recorded. If I were going to use hardware, it'd probably be limiting more so than compression. Limiting can keep your signal under control, without doing too much to the dynamics. I'd prefer to save compression for post, so I can decide what sounds best. I used to have a female vocalist with an amazing voice. i was NEVER able to capture her properly on tape, since I had no pre processing at all. She is still in this area, and I have invited her to come record some vox for me, because I want to see if I can now get a grip on them. If I ever do, she'll be featured on an upcoming CD

  • Using MI4 with garageband

    Hi,
I was wondering if anybody has got MI4 working with GarageBand. I installed the Mi4 drivers and Garageband seems to recognize that as one of the inputs, but when i record something with Mi4 as the input and my guitar plugged into MI4 I get a very loud screeching sound and nothing else.
Has anybody tried to use MI4 as an interface for instruments?

  • Can you use Redrum with GarageBand?

Hey, I just got a new Mac on Friday (my first mac ever), and was wondering if you could use redrum with Garage Bands Loops. What I want to do is use the loops I make in Propellerhead Reasons Redrum with Garage Bands Loop file. Can someone tell me or even if this is possible??

I have BFD Lite that came bundled with my ControlPad, & while it is a fully funtional drum solution, I've found EZDrummer to be, well, easier to use. Of course it depends on your intended application-do you want to trigger the sounds manually through pads or a keyboard, or are you looking for premade midi patterns? Both apps will work for either case, but the midi pattern interface for BFD is far more obtuse than that of EZD. All in all, I can appreciate the flexibility that BFD offers, but I use EZD 99% of the time, and I'm a long time drummer. FWIW, I rarely use the patterns, & trigger from a DrumKat or the ControlPad.
One caveat for drag & drop-GB will create an oddball track (mine is a flute track) & you'll need to re-drag the pattern into your drum track & eliminate the placeholder track.

  • Using Line 6 DL4 pedal for VOCALS with Garageband

    Hey all,
Does anyone know how to help me properly connect my new Line 6 DL4 loop pedal (the green one) to Garageband so I can practice laying down vocal loops for live gigs? I am using this pedal to do harmonies and funky effects with my vocals and have plugged it into my M-Audio pre-amp using a 2-sided quarter inch cord. My mic is plugged directly into the Line 6 pedal and when I open Garageband and create a basic vocal track with "Monitor ON" I can hear the Line 6 effects.
    PROBLEM:
I am stomping the Line 6 button to record the loop but when I go to play it back on the pedal or to overdub it, no sound comes out. I will test the pedal with a regular guitar amp, but does anyone know if I can use Garageband as my monitor/amp so I can hear whatever sounds I make with my Line6 pedal in the software?
    Thanks!!

The DL4 really isn't meant as a looper and your mac isn't meant to be a amp but if you want to use your mac as a pa forget garageband just use line-in http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/.

  • Using AW16G with Garageband

    Hi All,
I have a Yamaha AW16G mulit-track recorder and an iMac. I was hoping I would be able to use my AW16G as a controller for Garageband. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so, how I would go about setting it up?
    Many thanks,
    Aj

I don't believe this would be possible. GB isn't really friendly to controllers, and only one - the iControl, which was specifically designed for GB - works with it out of the box. I'm not all that familiar with the AW16G, but I'm not sure it can be used as a controller even with software that accommodates standard controllers. So from both sides, it's probably not going to be possible. (And if I'm wrong about the AW16G and it is theoretically possible, it's not going to be easy.)

  • Using Stealthplug with Garageband

Hi, How do I set Garageband in order for me to use Stealthplug and Amplitube on only one track (guitar) and not on the entire mastertrack of a song?
    Any hints?
    Thanks.

Are you loading Amplitube as an AU plugin behind your 'amp' in the edit pane? It might be easier to create a Real Instrument track for use with Amplitube. I've used both techniques with IK Multimedia's Ampeg SVX amp mod - but it never appears in the edit pane of the Master Track as well. If that's really what's happening on your system, it's very strange indeed. That being said, if so, you can always just disable it there.

  • Is there a way to use Dropbox with Garageband for iPad?

I'd like to be able to Garageband projects on my iPad then upload them so students could download them and work on them and resubmit them.  Does Dropbox work with this?  Also, once I put an iPad project into the desktop version, can the iPad version use it again?  Thanks for your help in advance!

The only way I see it working for the moment is prepping the tune on GB, sending to the students via email, then the students upload the file to GB via iTunes so they can interact with it.
I'm still in a hybrid (iPad, PC) so I do not know about using a version of the song modified on GB for Mac.

I've got Windows XP installed in Parallels with Acad versions 2004 and 2008. Works fine. I wonder though how large a file it will work with.  Most of my stuff is relatively small.

  • Static using iMic with GarageBand on iBook G4

I'm getting very bad static trying to use an iMic to record in GarageBand on a G4 iBook. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Never mind -- just found that the GarageBand input was still set to internal mic, even though iMic was set in the system preferences. Now that they're in sync, everything's working fine...

  • Using USB Microphone With GarageBand iPad?

Hi, I have the Samson G-Track USB Microphone and have been using it with GarageBand for iPad (with a powered USB hub) and I was wondering if there is a way to enable "Monitor" so that when I speak into the microphone I can hear myself in the headphones? I have no problem recording with the microphone, I just can't hear myself when I'm recording. There are a few switches on the actual microphone that could control this or it could all be controlled from iPad itself, just looking for anyone who could help with this matter. Thanks!

I'm having the same problem trying to monitor my turntable recording via a USB phono amp connected via a USB hub to the photo connection kit.
Have you had any help with this yet?

  • Antares harmony engine with Garageband 08

Has anyone tried antares harmony engine with garageband or even know if you can use it with garageband 08 ? I'm new to garageband and thought about trying it but, can't find a lot of info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for your reply this got me moving in the right direction but I have a slight revision to your instructions in Mainstage 3:
1/ Click the "+" to Create a new Instrument (in the pulldown menu in the dialog that follows select the MIDI keyboard you want to trigger the note events just like you would with one of the internal instruments)
2/ On the INPUT of the channel strip that was created Select AU MIDI-controlled Effects/Antares/Harmony Engine/mono (or stereo) in the I/O pop-up menu, where you usually select an instrument plugin (it will NOT be an insert effect!). You will not find the plug-in in AU Instrument submenu: go instead to the AU MIDI-controlled Effects at the very bottom of the pop-up window.
3/ Open the installed plug-in window.
4/ In the Side Chain pop-up (upper right corner of the Harmony Engine window) select the source audio track you want to process. Set the Harmony Source parameter to Chord via MIDI or MIDI Omni.
5/ Balance the source audio track to harmonies using the faders in the Harmony Engine.  I prefer to use a mic splitter to send my dry mic to the house mixer as well as the computer as a source.   I then turn down the source input mix on the harmonizer.  This allows the house sound guy to ride the lead vocal and the harmonies are mixed with my keyboard patches
Whenever you play a note / interval / chord on your MIDI keyboard, the plugin will create the equivalent voice(s).
Don't exceed the maximum of 4 notes in a chord, as you can't create more voices - additional MIDI notes could bring confusing results.
    Good luck.

  • Korg M1 Le software with Garageband

    Hi,
I have recently bought the Korg M1 Le software for my Mac,
but am really struggling trying to use it with Garageband & Logic.
    Has anyone got any advice?
    Many thanks,
    Matthew.

yeeeeah thats what i've been figuring out for the last 12 hours haha. kinda've a pain but hey it works out. u can still throw some pretty cool effects and what not. Even with MIDI cables running from my kaoss pro into my mac doesn't work. i can transfer the loops I make on my kaoss pro to the editor on my comp, then transfer those files to GB then go from there. It ***** there isn't a way to hook it in and sync it w/ GB so you can hit record then start jamming on the kaoss pro. Thanks for the response though!
