Using Wall Socket to Route internet

I have seen a new device come out made to work with the new sling device that can route the internet using your wall electrical sockets...(home wiring) Was just wondering if you could a) use it for regular internet or is it only for that device.... b) Would it work better than using a wireless router....and c)if anybody uses it now or knows about it... is it a reliable routing source eg. does it work fast. lol
I currently have a wireless router and hate it and this would resolve my issues greatly !!! Thanks everyone.

this technology is actually quite old, although manufacturers are rolling out new product based on it. another technology that allows non-ethernet cabled locations to get a connection are phone line adapters.
both technologies work quite well. the 1 thing to keep in mind with powerline adapters are the characteristics of your electrical service, split phases, etc... if you do not have a filter, technically someone outside of you load center (street or neighbor on old wiring) could conceivably get on your network... but of course this possibility is realy very remote, much less risky than running a wireless network.
Personally, I would use wireless because of the convenience. If for any reason it was not 100% reliable, then these power and phone line adapters are great patches and are quite reliable (the technology at least, can't vouch for any specific product). As for speed, it is probably on par with a regular CAT-5 wired 10/100baseT connection, if not slightly slower.
On a related but slightly off topic matter... you are from New York. This is one of the states that Verizon is rolling out FIOS service. FIOS hardware incorporates a new technology called "MOCA" that allows ethernet over coax. It is not at all related to old 50 ohm 10base2 "thin net" networks, but is more similiar to subscriber line service that cable companies use to provide service, but on a local network level. FIOS is incredibly cheap for the promised speed, so might be something to check with Verizon about. I live several hundred feet away from one of their main switching buildings in Manhattan and I don't have service yet, while others on Long Island and Queens do. You can see that distribution is quite limited and still resembles a test bed model.... at least here.

HEY! I have the exact same problem! I have a ipod touch 2G. Have you fixed the problem? I recently bought a new Apple Wall Charger. It does not work! I have taken it to the store, and it workers there. WEIRD! HELP!
Let me get this straight. You have a brand new Apple wall charger. It does not work at home but it works fine at the store? Does it work at a neighbor's house?
Sounds like you need to call an electrician to inspect your outlets at home.

  • My ipod will not charge from a wall socket but will charge using the same cable if the usb end is plugged into a computer or an airport power source. My iphone and ipad charge fine on the same cable usin ghte same wall plug in the same wall socket?

My ipod will not charge from a wall socket but will charge using the same cable if the usb end is plugged into a computer or directly into an airport power source. My iphone and ipad charge fine on the same cable using the same wall plug in the same wall socket. This makes no sense but I see that it has been posted as a problem elsewhere. This must be due to some kind of degredation of the Ipod. . It is not fixed by IOS resets as others have noted.
Has anyone asked Apple directly about this?

    Hi there Apples or Pears,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the articles below.

  • Wireless internet not working at my house when I use my laptop (using a linksys wrt54g2 router)

I am using a laptop for wireless internet (Dell D610). I have no problem using wireless internet at my school and in other places, but at my house, I can’t browse the internet. The router at my house has a strong signal (4 or 5 bars) and when I try to connect to it, it says that I am connected, but when I open up the internet browser, I can’t get online. The router is in a room right next to mine and it is on the same floor. It is a Linksys WRT54G2 router.
When I go to the network connections folder, for the wireless network connection icon, it says “not connected, firewalled.” I can still browse the internet, though (at places other than my house).
Another thing that I want to mention- I can't connect to other routers in the neighborhood either (the ones that aren't secured). It just doesn't connect (but for the router in my house, it connects). But my roommate told me that a bunch of people have connected to this one guy's router.
What is the problem here? What can I do to make the internet work? Why would I be able to access the school's wireless internet and not the one in my house?

Whats the Wireless Settings you have set on your Router, I there might be the possibility that you have set the security mode on your Router too high thats the reason you are not getting connected to your Wireless Network. Follow the setps to change the Wireless settings on your Router and i think this might help in getting you connected to your wireless network.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Click on the Sub tab, Wireless MAC Filter..
Make sure the Wireless MAC Filter on your Router is Turned Off.
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

Is it normal for someone to have general diffuculty charging an ipad?  I see the "not charging" message even when I am using the charger and cord that came in the original box, plugged into a wall socket directly.  It is normal for me to plug it in overnight and to see no charge whatsoever the next day.  I have never had so much trouble using a friggin charger in my life.  It just seems to be exceedingly finicky.  What am I missing?

Charging your iPad should not be problematic. It should be an easy thing to do using the charger provided with your iPad connected to a known good wall outlet.
The charging problem you are experiencing is most like caused by:
    1. A faulty charger
    2. A faulty cable
    3. A bad wall outlet
    4. A problem in the iPad.
The first three of these are easiest to eliminate. Try a for ends charger and cable. Make absolutely sure your outlet is good. Try other outlets.
If the charger, cable and outlet a proven to be good then the problem lies in the iPad.
Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

As a router or do you want to use the phone signal to provide an Internet connection? If that is what you are attempting to do you are asking about tethering and need to speak to your cell phone provider to get that service turned on. If you actually want the phone to be a router, no it does not have that ability.

  • Macbook Pro using directly on wall socket

    Hi there,
I just bought a Macbook Pro 13" late 2013 and I always use it a home most of the time. So my question is: will I spoil its battery if I use it most of the time plugged in the wall socket even if it's already 100% charged?
The life battery of the laptop is great, but once I always use the magic mouse, it drains the battery faster due to bluetooth. Another reason is that sometimes I let my laptop all night turned on downloading stuff, and to avoid it turning off due to lack of energy, I would let it plugged in directly in the wall socket.
    [sorry about my english].

    Your English is just fine.
You can use your MacBook Pro even though the battery is fully charged and you're plugged into mains - just make sure that you give your battery a 'breather' every couple of weeks and let it run down to about 30-40% before plugging back into mains again. Since I use my machine on mains almost 100% of the time, I have a reminder for every two weeks and I unplug and let the battery run down to about 30% before plugging it back up. This keeps the ions flowing and the battery healthy.
    Hope that helps...

  • I can't get a signal through whole house because of a brick wall   What range extender do you recommend to be used with my wireless router ( apple brand)

I can't get a signal through whole house because of a brick wall   What range extender do you recommend to be used with my wireless router ( apple brand)

Very few 3rd party wireless extenders will work with an Apple router, so your best bet is always to use an extender that is the same brand as the main router. An AirPort Express is a popular choice for this type of application with another Apple router.
If you had a Cisco router, then a Cisco extender would be your best bet.  Same for Netgear, etc.
But......a wireless extender can only "extend" the quality of wireless signal that it receives, and not much of a wireless signal is going to make it through a brick wall, so whether any extender might do what you want is open to question.
You won't know whether an extender using wireless to connect will work to your satisfaction in your home until you actually try it out in your home.
The performance will always be much better if you can connect the extending device back to the main router using a wired Ethernet cable connection.
If it is not possible to run the Ethernet cable, a pair of Ethernet power line adapters might be able to send the signal over the existing AC power lines in your home. The theory with these devices is that you already have the wiring in place, you just need the adapters.
In practice though, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest, so if you decide to try a pair of adapters, it might be a good idea to understand the store's return policies before you buy.

  • Ipod wont charge on a wall socket-will only charge a little from USB.

    Dear Apple,
    I have a 160gb ipod model which i bought 3 months ago.
Recently my ipod has stopped charging from a wall socket completely.I ve been using the apple wall charger for a time so i know its not its fault.Further on i have tried another third company's usb wall charger and 2 different cables.Nothing seems to work.Afterwards i tried charging it on a PC and it worked the first time but after that i leave it charging for 2-4 hours and it only shows 1/2 of the battery getting charged which will go down to 1/3,1/4th as soon as i plug it off.I ve tried resetting it multiple times but to no avail. I know that there have been other cases such as mine and i have tried researching it in the forums but with no sure solution. Please advise as to how i should proceed.Thank you in advance

Well ok news flash.I went outside to an internet cafe and put it in normally in a usb and after 2 hours it charged fully and lasted fully for the battery time. This still doesnt explain though why when i used two different cables and two different wall chargers it wouldnt charge when it used to.(P.S.: I am in an army camp thus the reason i cant rely on a PC socket being available)Thanks in advance

  • IPhone adapter wall socket blew up!

My grandson gave me his old iPhone 4S to use plus adapter which, he bought from amazon as a genuine product (I know what you are thinking!) he told me it needed fully charging up.  This I did when I got home plugging it into a wall socket low on the wall in my kitchen near to my dining table.  I kept checking how it was getting on but it did not appear to be doing much.  After about 2hrs I sat at the table to do some work, checked again, still no improvement when all of a sudden the plug exploded, very very loud bang, shooting the front part and the inners right past my leg (thank goodness the socket was not head height, makes me shiver to think what might have happened).  The back of the adapter with the pins is stuck in the socket, black inside the plug and around the socket and the phone lead shot out of the adapter.
I thought it had fried the phone but after I had gotten over my fright (well I am 66!) decided to try to charge it up with my ipad2 adapter as there appeared to life left in the phone!  This worked perfectly.  Since this has happened I have checked the internet and it would appear that Apple were replacing some of these adapters last year at a reduced price if they were taken into one of their shops.
I do not have a shop near me and I cannot find a correct telephone number (uk) to ring about this as it feel someone should be advised.  My grandson has now gone back to university a long way from me as I am sure he would have helped me with this.
Would be grateful for any help.  Is it still ok to charge the phone with the ipad2 adapter?
    I have taken photographs.

Apple does not reccommend that you buy ony kind of charger from a 3rd party this is not because we just want your money but this is for your safety! Apple is the one who makes the chargers and are designed correctly to make sure that something like this happens. When you buy one off amazon real cheap then it is a risk of being made cheaply and possibly not going to work correctly either. I posted a link above for you read on the direct apple website for ya. Glad your okay though

  • How do I use a netgear N600 router with Infinity 1

I have searched various forums etc. with mixed success so am hoping that someone here can give me an idiot's guide to connecting to the internet using my netgear N600 router rather than using the BT Homehub 5. BT say that I can do it (despite my router being set up for ADSL and the HH5 being set up for VDSL) but that they can't tell me how! They sent me an email with various details I would need but I can't see where most of them need to be added when I connect to the netgear set up wizard. What I could see I filled in but when I tried to connect the netgear genie told me the ADSL cable wasn't connected. Can anyone give me a step by step guide of what to do please? I would be very grateful. Thanks

I just have the homehub 5 - I have seen various complicated descriptions elsewhere explaining how to use the HH5 as just a modem or how to just connect directly with the Netgear but all have been a bit over my head!
The HH5 cannot be used as a stand alone modem. You could use the Netgear as a simple wireless access point, but you would lose most of the functions, and would be better off using a proper wireless access point.
You cannot use the Netgear as a router, without a modem.
