Using WCL to Manage 900 AP across 300 node MPLS Network

Cisco is recommending we use a Wireless Controller at our corporate office to manage 3 APs at each of our 300 store locations (900 APs total).  I would like to know if anyone has deployed a similar solution to determine if this is a good approach.
The Corporate office has a DS3 (45Mbps) connection to the MPLS cloud.  Each of the 300 stores has a 768K connection.  Typical network response times range between 20ms to 85ms depending on hops and distance from the corporate office. Store APs would be thin (1131s or 1142s) using HREAP with local switching.  Each store would have its own HREAP group to manage the AP at the store.  Ideally VOIP and local data would stay local.  Auth and Internet traffic would route through the WLC.  There is no local internet circuit at the store.  All Routers, Switches and APs are made by Cisco.  We are using Cisco CME with 79xx phones.  Each Store has 4 each 7921 wireless phone as well.
I am told that VOIP roaming in a store will work if the store is offline (disconnected from the WLC) via local auth to the AP.  In theory this looks feasible, but I have no reference to confirm.
If you have a similar setup I would like to hear from you to learn how well it works and if you had any problems with the initial installation.

Store APs would be thin (1131s or 1142s) using HREAP with local switching.
Firstly, in wireless parlance there is no such thing as a "thin" or "thick" AP.  It's either autonomous or controller-based (sometimes called as LWAP or CAPWAP).  Please refrain from using this term as it will make you sound smart when you are talking to the un-initiated.
Ok, so you got H-REAP.  This is good.  Now the question is do you have local RADIUS at each store?  If you don't then your store is "useless" if the WAN link goes down because when the WAN link goes down and a new client needs to authenticate then it needs to find the authentication server, HOWEVER, if the client is already authenticated and the WAN link goes down, it's still OK.
Next, Wireless VoIP and roaming.  Presume you have a 7921 with the extension number of 12345 and this is for your branch, say Las Vegas.  Let's say that you went to your Atlanta office.  Guess what, if someone calls you at your extension number of 12345, your phone (currently in Atlanta office) will ring.   (By the way, did you hear about the new model, the 7926G?)
WLC, you'll need to look at the Flex 7500 WLC.  This model will do nothing BUT H-REAP.  How many clients per branch (aside from the 7921G)?
I am told that VOIP roaming in a store will work if the store is offline (disconnected from the WLC) via local auth to the AP.
As long as the WAN link is not down then the 7921 should be able to survive if the WLC is off-line as long as the WAPs are not reloaded after the WAPs lost "sight" of the WLC.

    Thanks!Session ids are unique and cannot be transferred between different servers... Wise web servers supports load balancing and should be able to transfer/store session without your special code. If you still keen to write transfer code yourself you have to:
    1) Store not only session id, but also all content of session (including some virtual (your) session id
    2) Transfer (i.e. create a copy) stored session content to another machine

    I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
    I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
    If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
    Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

    Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
    Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
    Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
    For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
    Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
    The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
    Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
    The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
    Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
    When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
    These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
    So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
    So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • Using a tag manager with the Elq. tracking script.

    Has anyone had any luck using a tag managment tool to package the eloqua tracking scripts. We are using Google Tag Manager and not having any luck registering click-throughs on our emails.
    Let me know if you're having success and what you're doing to get there. Thanks.

    Jim -
    I've seen the scripts deployed and working properly across sites using various platforms from tag management to CMS that are truly tracking but where the tracking validator built into Eloqua doesn't validate the presences of the scripts.  The best way to check it is two fold: 1. visit the pages on with an uncookied browser, submit a form, etc. to get a cookie and then surf around and check the contact record in eloqua about 20 min later.  2.  look at the site map in eloqua to see if your pages are all visible.

  • Managing root passwords across hundreds of systems

    All:
    Is there a mechanism to manage root passwords across hundreds of Solaris 10 systems? The policy requirement would be UNIQUE ROOT PASSWORDS...
    Thanks
    Sekhar Nagasundaram

    Hi,
    Your friend ssh is the answer here :)
    We do exactly this in the office, changing passwords remotely. Obviously, you will need to have some backend database to hold/generate the passwords for each machine. Once you have that, it is a matter of iterating over each machine in turn and changing the account password.
    There are three ways I can think of doing this in an automated way:
    1) on each system use sed or similar to directly alter the /etc/shadow file. (risky...)
    2) on each system use a tool, to change the /etc/shadow password file, which is passed the passwords on the command line. There is a chpass or similar tool such as this distributed with a Squirrelmail plugin for instance
    3) use an expect script to alter the password by interacting with passwd.
    Which way you implement will be largely goverened by your local policies and procedures.

  • SPA112 use with Call Manager

    We have used ATA 186 devices with our Call Manager system for use with fax machines and analog phones in a manufacturing environment.  I am hopeful that the SPA112 can be used as a lower cost alternative to the older ATAs.
    I have searched for basic configuration information for use with Call Manager but haven't come across anything.
    Can these devices be used with Call Manager and is there basic information available on how to configure them?
    Thanks.

    The SPA112 is essentially the same as the Linksys PAP2t adapter.
    They both use SIP protocol, and can be added to Callmanager, but I don't think the SPA112 is supported in this configuration.
    I was able to get the SPA112 to work with CallManager by adding it as an Advanced SIP device.  That uses more licenses (6 I think).
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2082101
    That details getting a Linksys PAP2 device working with CallManager 7.1
    I got SPA112's working by using the info in that link.  You have to set it all up manually, but it does work.

  • I to use iphoto library manager to save corrupted iphoto and each time it saves some and the first time it brings up iphoto, iphone goes into "not responding" mode.  Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2.

    I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding."  Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

    Do you have a back up?
    If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
    Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
    Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
    Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera.

  • Link to PL/SQL procedure using a Template Manager template.

    Hi,
    I need to link a portal application report (report from SQL query) to a SQL procedure that uses a template manager template. The PL/SQL procedure requires parameters. I'm not be able to create a link based on a PL/SQL procedure. The only solution I found is to setup a link to a Form based on that procedure. But the form is only used to call the PL/SQL procedure by clicking the submit button and redirect to the template.
    Another question:
    Is it planed to support dynamic links based on column conditions?
    I'm using Portal release 3.0.7.6.2.

  • Can I use the Profile Manager as an MDM while distributing app through app store?

    Is it possible to use the Profile Manager within the OSX Server to provision profiles through apps purchased in the app store?

  • Using Coursebuilder Action Manager to judge multiple interactions

    I'm trying to use the Action Manager to display feedback when three separate text entry interactions on a page are completed.  At the moment each interaction displays feedback and is disabled when completed.  When all three have been completed I want another instruction to appear.
    I have two layers with feedback, one for the feedback from each interaction and another where the instruction is to appear when all 3 are complete.
    I can get the instruction to appear when judging the Action Manager using a submit button, but not when I try and have it judge the completion of each interaction.
    I have read the tutorial on the coursebuilder support page and tried the example in this situation, but it seems to be doing something different to what I'm hoping to achieve.
    Anyone know how I can do this?

    MDouglasNZ
    As far as I am aware it is best practice to only use one judgeable interaction per page, otherwise it starts misbehaving. I have only ever used one interaction on a page.

  • How to specify finite simulation stop time in VI generated using SIT connection manager

    Hello,
    I have a SIMULINK model which I want to run on a desktop ETS. I'm following this procedure:
    1. Convert the SIMULINK model in a .DLL using RTW build in Matlab. The target of this build is nidll.tlc.
    2. Create a host VI with required indicators and map the parameters using SIT connection manager.
    3. Configure the DAQ (and then SIT connection manager generated the driver and IO files for me.)
    4. Using LV project, run the driver on the desktop ETS and host VI on the host machine.
    The code is working fine, without any error.
    My question is this: Since in the driver VI, the simulation time is set to -1, which implies "continuous", the simulation goes on until I hit the stop button on the host VI.
    I tried changing this default value to some other value. The simulation then does run for the defined amount of time but then I'm getting error 2206.
    What is an appropriate way to stop the simulation on the RT target?
    Thanks
    Gayatri
    PS: I'm using LV 8.5, LVRT 8.5, SIT 4.0, Matlab @2007a.

    The VI in the Driver VI called SIT Initialize Model.vi has an input called time step (sec) (-1: use model time step) which does what you want it to. It doesn't actually affect the time step of the solver used in the built model DLL, just the rate at which the main base rate loop actually runs in real time. In fact, base rate loop period would be a better name for this control. If you set it, you won't alter your model, but you will be able to adjust the rate of the base rate loop.
    Simply create a control from this input terminal on your driver VI and fill in an appropriate period in seconds. Make sure to set this value as default in the control so that the Driver VI remembers it.
    You will have to take into account that your model will still think it's running at the time step it was compiled at. So your model simulation time and the actual wall clock time won't match up.

  • Error while creating data source using Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g

    Hi,
    I have deployed my web application developed on OC4J 9.0.4 stand alone (Win2K) to an integrated OC4J version(Solaris) using Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g.
    However, I get an error when I try to create a data source.
    The data source I want to create would have the following parameters (as seen in data-sources.xml on the stand alone version):
         <data-source
              class="com.evermind.sql.DriverManagerDataSource"
              name="TestDS"
              location="jdbc/OracleCoreDS"
              xa-location="jdbc/xa/OracleXADS"
              ejb-location="jdbc/TestDS"
              connection-driver="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"
              url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@hostName:1521:test"
              username="user"
              password="password"
              min-connections="5"
              max-connections="20"
              inactivity-timeout="30"
         />
    When I entered the above data on the Enterprise Manager Data Sources page, I got the following error:
    quote:
    Error saving Data Source Properties. - Entity et="system";ei="0",et="application";ei="48",et="data-sources";ei="167":child:data-sourcechild key:location:jdbc/OracleCoreDS; class:com.evermind.sql.DriverManagerDataSource; already exists in the repository. Resolution: Please check the code base.
    unquote:
    Could somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong ?
    I tried to manually edit the data-sources.xml file but the data source didn't show up on the Enterprise Manager.
    I'm using a new OC4J instance (on the Solaris machine) for my applications. Is the data source error related to this?
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Shyam

    Thanks for your reply , Steve.
    I noticed that there is a default datasouce on the EM with the following parameters:
    <data-source
              class="com.evermind.sql.DriverManagerDataSource"
              name="OracleDS"
              location="jdbc/OracleCoreDS"
              xa-location="jdbc/xa/OracleXADS"
              ejb-location="jdbc/OracleDS"
              connection-driver="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"
              username="scott"
              password="->pwForScott"
              url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:oracle"
              inactivity-timeout="30"
         />
    The location and xa-location attributes that I use for my "test" data source are the same as the default one. So, could this be the issue?
    What should be the values for location and xa-location attributes from my "test" data source?
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Shyam
