Using Wide Channel in draft-n routers

Hi all,
I've recently purchased the WRT310N router together with a WPC600N PCMCIA card for use in my notebook.  I have other 802.11G devices at home (a SqueezeBox, another notebook with built-in G adapter and a BlackBerry Bold) which connect to the new router as well.  Over the last 2 weeks, my wireless network has been practically unusable, requiring resets every couple of hours or twice daily at best.  I've tried most of the recommendations from this forum - hard-resets; changing parameters like beacon interval etc..; changing to different channels (wide & standard), none of this really helped.
I then researched on the 802.11n standard and I think the firmware from Linksys seems to have some fundamental problem on the "wide channel" option.  From various sources on the web, the "channel bonding" feature of 802.11n will utilise two ADJACENT and NON-OVERLAPPING 20MHz channels together to increase the overall bandwidth.  As we all know, in the 2.4GHz band, if we start from channel 1, there could only be 3 non-overlapping channels altogether - CH1, CH6 and CH11.  However, in the firmware of my WRT310N, if I choose CH6 as the wide channel, I'd be given the choice of either CH4 or CH8 as the standard channel.  As each channel will need 20MHz but is only 5MHz apart from the adjacent channel, both CH4 or CH8 will directly interfere with CH6, causing unstable transmission/reception.  I believe what the firmware should do when you choose CH6 as the wide channel is to give you only CH1 or CH11 as the standard channel.
With the above in mind, I disabled the wide channel option totally, my WPC600N now runs at a much lower bandwidth but the stability for my whole network has improved a lot (I haven't had a reboot since the last 24 hrs).  Can someone confirm if my theory above is correct or not?
Regards,
Paul.

What all things which you wrote, its right but there are certain things which you need to adjust more on your Router, that will solve your problem.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
-Here select manual configuratioon...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network. Now try if you could see the Wireless Network Name/SSID and try to connect...
Click on Advanced Wireless

  • Wide Channels in Australia and New Zealand

Although I could connect my Macbook Pro C2D to the Airport Extreme (n) using 5GHz n-only, it refused to connect (" There was an error...") if Use Wide Channels was selected.
I tried changing the country from NZ to Australia and it then worked (link speed 300). Yet as far as I know, the two countries have the same regulations, and NZ is not listed as banning wide channels - and the option was available with NZ set, it just didn't connect.
So is this a bug? Or do Apple know something I don't?

  • N 5GHz wide channel wireless extension low throughput, why?

I have 1 Time Capsule and 1 Airport Extreme, both in different to rooms to extend my internet connection across my flat without any cables.
The capsule creates a N-only 5Ghz wide channel network and is connected to a DSL modem in my office room.
The extreme extends that network into the living room, also using wide channel.
For testing I have wired a Mac to the extreme.
When I access from that Mac the capsule disk (so exercising the wireless link between extreme and capsule) I get at most 3.7MBytes/s.
When connecting wirelessly to the extreme it is even worse: 2MBytes/s.
    For comparison:
When I wire the Mac directly to the Capsule (so excluding the extreme from the wexperiment) I get about 16MBytes/s.
When connecting wirelessly to the capsule (also exclding the extreme) I get about 9MBytes/s.
It seems that the two base stations do not talk N to each other (and I did not use WDS!). Am I missing the point here? Shouldn't the wireless link between s the N base stations be more than lousy 3.7MBytes/s?
    How come?
    I'd love to fix this!

William your asnwer sound somewhat standard. We know that WDS halves throughput. We know we can use "extend network" in N networks.
That is exactly why we do that Again: I do not use WDS here (in case I haven't mentioned it explicitely).
I use the N network extension feature and still get these lousy rates.
Could it be that the working principle of WDS and N network extension is very similar?
Does anyone know how both work and what the real difference is? (Except for WDS being for G networks We know that aready.
    Another thing:
The antennas in Airport extreme and TC don't seem to be too good: Lifting the station half a meter from the floor up to a table makes a difference of several hundred Bytes/s!

  • Fix for 5 GHz wide channel ON drop outs on AEBS!!

change the channel from automatic (36) to 161... haven't tried others.
    open the airPort Utility app
    click on the base station
got to manual set up > wireless tab
    radio mode: 802.11n (5GHz)
IMPORTANT! Channel: press Option while Clicking on the Channel combo box and choose 161... found out from the instruction manual that this option + click gives extra options... also extra options for radio mode as well... non- n options
    wireless options: wide channels ON
    press update
may have to restart you Apple TV... press and hold "menu" and "-"/down button... wait a bit and from the menu press "restart"
and no more dropout with 5GHz wide channels on!!!

Ok - just to make sure Apple hears about every one of us having the problem. I never had any issues with my wireless connection prior to the 2.01 upgrade but now streaming from my Mac to the AppleTV using the Airtunes function doesn't work for more than 5-10min before the network connection is dropped.
    Configuration:
    - AEBS running a N only 5GHz network and using Wide Channels - latest software & firmware
    - AppleTV with 2.01 software
    - iMac used for streaming
I'm not planning to switch 2.4Ghz or stop using wide channels (I already have a 2.4Ghz G network thank you )- so please Apple we need a patch!
    Kind regards

  • Lower signal when using wide 40 MHz channels?

I noticed on my WRT-150N that when I switched the unit to 40 MHz wide channels, the signal strength (at a few feet from the router) dropped about 30-40% on my MacBook Pro. I am assuming this may be normal and could be due to the transmitter having to spread its power over twice as much bandwidth. Is this an accurate guess? If so, it would appear that enabling wide channels will definitely eat into your range.

yes you are correct...higher bandwidth is = lower range and vice versa...

  • How many 80Mhz wide channels?

I am getting ready to install some 3700 series AP's and then also configure the WLAN controller to support 802.11ac.  I was reading on the net that there are basically 5 80Mhz channels you can use however when I look over Cisco documentation I do not see any reference to this and only see a DCA listing that would allow only 3 80Mhz wide channels.  Here is the document I mentioned. - http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/technology/5760_deploy/CT5760_Controller_Deployment_Guide/802_11ac_support_on_WLC5760_and_Catalyst_3850.html
Here are the channel groupings for 5 channels that I want to setup:
    36-48
    52-64
    100-112
    132-149
    153-165
Am I missing something or will this work?
    Seth

80 MHz wide channels allow for five (5) non-overlapping channels in the U.S. and five (5) in the UK/EU (channels 149 and higher require light licensing for outdoor use only) when DFS is used, but only two (2) channels in the U.S. and one (1) in UK/EU without DFS.

  • No "wide channel" connected with wusb300n to wrt350n router!

read someone else had this problem to in here, but i lost the post..he got no answer though! Have been 8 hour at the router/computer now, not getting it up to the wide channel. I have updated both the adapter driver and the wrt350n firmware, and i have set all kinds of channels, back and forth, trying to connect to the wide channel, to get my "N-experience" but with no luck... Really getting tired of it, as i waited for a while to buy, hoping to go past any release problems. Is there any particular antenna for the N network? i mean the fat one in the middle of this router? I am Desperatly trying everything here. hoping for an anwer! Message Edited by Imgaerion on 11-15-2007 04:05 PM edited: i have also trided the 9 and 11 channel select, with all from 13,5 mbps to 270 mbps, and threshold to 2304. with no luck at all, also with several other channels, as i get best connection the lower channel i use.

after a lot different setups of the router, trying everything, BUT to change the wireless encryption from "PSK- TKIP" to "PSK-AES" ! the TKIP part only work with 54g for some reason, but the AES part connects at N speeds!

  • Memory problems when using alias channel strips (3.0.2)

I'm having memory issues when using alias channel strips.  What is happening is I create one instance of the plugin, say Massive.  Then make a bunch of other alias on different patches.  When looking at the memory usage everytime I add and alais it increases the memory usage by an amount the same as the origional plugin.  ie. add 3 alias and you have 3 times more memory usage.  See attached photos.
Original plugin instance ~80mb memory usage
Adding 3 Alias channel strips.  ~330mb memory usage
By comparison here is the usage by adding 3 brand new instance of the plugins. ~160mb memory usage
By comparison it is using less memory by having 4 seperate instances of the plugin compared to using 3 alias's of the origional.  This doesn't make sense since the whole point of an alias is to save memory by only loading one instance of the plugin.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Jon

What's interesting is that if I, starting with a blank concert, add a Massive to a patch and then make an alias the memory is as you say. But if I make a duplicate of the inital patch and then make alias's of that the memory is lower.
Are you seeing the same with the built-in plug-ins?

  • How to use multiple channels to sample one signal

I would like to use all channels on an AI-110 to sample the same signal in order to increase my sampling rate.  (I have spare channels, not spare $$.)  In hardware the channels are read sequentially so in theory I should be able to do this, but I'm having trouble reconstituting the signal.  If I use FP Reads the timestamps seem to indicate the time of the read, not the time of the A/D conversion, so I can't tell which sample was taken last.  FP-Advise on change seems ill-suited as well since consecutive samples may be the same on a certain channel, but the signal may have varied in the mean time on the other channels.
Any ideas how this might be done otherwise?  The VI will run embedded on a cFP-2020 controller with LabViewRT v. 6.1.1.
    Thanks,
    Anton

    Anton,
I understand what you are trying to do and do not think it can be done with a single module.  The timestamp on the FP-Read is all about when the vi returned the data and not when the A/D conversion occured.  I just don't think that the A/D converter can keep track of the conversion time.
If you had multiple AI-110 modules, you could in theory connect your signal to individual channels on multiple modules and then sequence through the modules.  The problem here would be the ground loops.

  • Can i use 2 channel of USRP at the same time to receive a signal?

    Hi everyone,
i want to do an implementation of time difference of arrival estimation between two receivers (antenna). I have an USRP  kit, daughterboards and two antennas. There is only one source signal ( it is transmitted in anywhere it doesnt matter).
Can i use two channel of USRP at the same time to receive  a signal ?
I need the original source signal and time-shifted version of this signal.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Sincerely yours,
    Uysal.
    Solved!

    Hello,
I found this forum post which may be helpful to you.  It looks like you can't receive from the two antennae in the way that you describe.  I think this would require a two USRP setup.

  • PI 7.0: Error when calling an adapter by using communication channel

    Hello Experts,
We have a mapping scenario for ERP -> PI -> web service. Few details from ERP will be sent via PI to Web service.
Once the web service authenticates, token and sign will be generated. Here an RFC adapter is  used for configuring the RFC receiver communication channel and provided the ERP system logon details at the RFC client parameter.
An error is received as mentioned below.

  • APs using different channels for the same SSID

    Hi,
This might be a stupid question, but I am wondering why my Aironet 1602i and 2602i access points connected to the same controller would use different channels for the same network. Would this be to avoid interference? If so, I am planning to put 9 access points throughout the office and they will be fairly close to each other. Would this increase the risk of interference?
    Thanks,
    Tibet

That is normal. The WLC is determining the best channel and being in different channels is the best. When you add more, the WLC will decide by the use if RRM what channels and power levels to allocate to each AP.

If anyone has some documentation that describe the process, it would be much appreciated.

  • Design help related to ACE to Switch connectivity using Port-Channel

    Hi,
I have a Cisco ACE 4710 configured in One-Arm mode. This ACE is getting connected with 2 3750 switches. These 2 3750 switches connected in trunk mode.
ACE is connected to these 3750 switches using Port-channel.
    ACE Config:

The problem is that 3750 switches are not stacked.
Application is working fine. But i am getting a lot of MAC flapping messages..
kindly suggest whether this design is OK or something needs to be done to rectify it...
    Attached a small diagram..

    Hello acharyr123,
I don't think this design is ok, and it would cause mac flapping since the two indepedendent 3750 switches will learn the ace mac addresses off of two different interfaces.  The 3750s would have to be stacked so that they would act as one switch then this should work correctly.

Why can I not use the channel name, which is obtained from the function of DAQmx Task, as the input of the channel name for the function of Get Channel Information of DAQ?

Not a lot of details here, but my guess is this isn't working for you because you are wiring in the task to the Active Channels Property and not the actual Channel Name. I have attatched a screenshot of what I believe you are trying to do. The Task has 2 channels in it, so I need to index off one of the channels and wire it into the active channels input of the Channel Property node. Then I can read information about that channel
