Using Wifi on BT Broadband

Hi there,
I recently signed up to BT Broadband along with a telephone line rental. I have 10GB of data and I have 1 PC wired up to the router. However, I also connect other devices such as a laptop and several smartphones to the router via Wifi.
I was wondering whether Wifi usage, whether using a laptop or smartphone, uses up some of my data allowance.
A quick response would be much appreciated.

You need to be clear as to the terminology you are using here.
The broadband connections will be wired , wireless and WiFi. The first two impact on your broadband usage allowance. WiFi has its own allowance of 10,000 minutes per month - if this is exceeded you will need to resign in every 30 minutes ( you need to resign every 2 hours when you are within the 10,000 mins)
If you are signed up to WiFi (automatically done for new customers in last 2 years) then if you find a useable hot spot then you can log in. You can also do this at home to avoid going over your broadband limit although connection speeds will be a lot lower.
You may see two networks called BTWi-Fi and BTWi-Fi-with FON which you can connect to - BT is slowly changing to just BTWiFi but FON still exists at the moment.

Using wifi will allow your phone to use that rather than the Broadband connection, so your 3G/4G usage would go down the more you use wifi. There have been people that have looked at their usage, and turned on wifi whenever possible, and their usage went from numbers like 3GB to less than 500MB.
If you wanted to see what your usage would be, start a new billing month, and use wifi as much as possible through the month and see what it is.

Help needed about using wifi

Please can somebody tell me in words of one syllable exactly what I need to start using an ipad for surfing the internet? I want to use it to access web pages while I'm out and about. Do I need a contract with a phone carrier? Does it need to be a mobile phone carrier? Could I use my landline number if I have broadband access on that?
I just can't work out whether I can use the ipad straight away without doing anything or whether I need to involve a mobile or landline/broadband supplier.
Please help - I'm soo confused.

you only need to contact a phone carrier if you don't wish to use wifi because you have an ipad which along side wifi support 3g internet then you need to contact a carrier and get a micro sim and a contract
if you already have an mobile phone which qualify as a smart phone you may be able to use that as a wifi hotspot to get on the internet using the phone but in some places this require you to pay extre to your phone contract

Upgraded to Infinity 2. Plug my laptop into the hub using the ethernet cable. Speed 55M.
Remove the cable and use WiFi, speed drops to 35. Laptop 10 metres away from hub (although the result is the same if I take the laptop to within a foot of the hub)
Done all the necessary to make sure it's on the best channel etc.
Does the purchase and use of a pair of Powerline adaptors (ie plug the hub into the power socket using an ethernet cable and the laptop into another power plug..on the same circuit..using another cable) effectively mean that I should then get the 55M speed?
Any advice will help. Keep it as non technical as possible, please.

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app
    •    Tap on Wi-Fi
    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

You need a DATA service enabled by your carrier to be able to send e-mail via thier network. Do you have a data plan with your carrier ? If so - is it enabled ?
Can you access internet thru your network (not wifi) ?

When you tried syncing, did you connect the phone, then click on the phone icon near the top left of iTunes, then click on Apps under Settings in the sidebar, then find the app in question and click the Install button beside it before clicking Sync at the bottom right?

Signal Strength shows 5 circles.
It does not display the iPad screen but when I use the BT Sport App I can hear the sound but there is no video. I have searched the internet for a solution to no avail. The problem first arose when the IOS was at 8.1+ but it worked correctly briefly when I updated to IOS 8.2. Can you help please?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Restart your mobile device.

Sending Mail using wifi

I know it's frowned upon to start two threads on the same topic but I think I was confusing the issue in the other thread so let me simplify this.
My ISPs outgoing mail server is mail.optonline.net If I set my iPhone to use this as it's primary setting, I can send via wifi with no issues.
If, however, I am connected via 3G, it hangs and then fails. If I make cwmx.com my primary outgoing smtp server, it works fine.
Technically, iPhone is supposed to try with the primary mail server first, and upon failure, attempt each of the "other" mail servers in succession. Unfortunately, when using wifi and the primary is set to cwmx.com, it takes about 10 minutes before it realizes it can't send then switches to try mail.optonline.net Sure in the end the mail is getting out, but it's taking too long to try via cwmx.com before trying mail.optonline.net
Is there a way to:
a) use cwmx.com as the primary when on 3G and
b) use mail.optonline.net as the primary when on wifi
Currently, I have to go into settings and turn wifi off before sending any mail from home. hen after it is sent, go back and turn wifi back on. Thanks in advance guys. Please let me know if I am not clear on anything.

This is normal since most ISPs do not have an authenticated SMTP server, and why they don't is beyond me.
Both email accounts that I access with the iPhone's mail client have an authenticated SMTP server, and I've never had any problems sending messages with either account when connected to AT&T's cellular network, or when connected to various wi-fi networks that I access often with different ISPs associated with each.
Most ISPs block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network or not provided by the ISP unless the SMTP server is authenticated, which includes AT&T's cellular network. These restrictions are in place as an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain. Someone who is abusing their privilege sending messages with an authenticated SMTP server can be more easily tracked.
The reason you can send messages with optonline's SMTP server when connected to your wireless network at home is because optonline is your ISP.

Are you trying to print through the airport express wirelessly or the built in wireless of the lexmark? If you want to use the airport express, there is no need to mess with the wireless printing on the lexmark at all. The airport express will be easy to set up, all the wireless setups through the printers are a pain.
