Using WIFI when phone service is interrupted

My phone service has been interrupted due to the recession. Is there a way I can still access my apps by using my WIFI? My computers are all connected to my WIFI, but the iPhone shows wifi connection all grayed out. If I go to settings > Choose a Network and choose my network (which is all grayed out), it is set to BootP and HTTP Proxy as Auto, but iPhone still does not connect through the WIFI.
Any solution? or am I just out of luck until Obama gives me one of the 16,000 IRS jobs coming up for health care LOL Well, I thought it was funny. Apparently, he's hiring! Private sector just isn't.

I'm just guessing because I'm looking at a Treo 650, but you could try this:
Home > Sounds
For Application, choose Phone
Tap "Tones"
Change "Service Tone" to Off
Any luck?

Will my 2012 Macbook pro retina  automatically stop using wifi when connected to an Ethernet enabled thunderbolt display?

    Depends.
If you go in System Preferences / Network, you will see a list of all the network interfaces your current configuration has. If you click on the gear icon next to the minus sign, the drop menu will offer "Set Service Order...". There you can prioritize the order of use: Ethernet above Wi-Fi and wireless will be ignored if Ethernet is available.
Note that the Wi-Fi card will remain active and associated with an access point nonetheless. It just won't be used for communications by the OS and apps.

iPhone 4 user here, updated to iOS 7 and now when my phone is plugged in and connected to wifi it keeps using my wifi, iCloud is off wifi syncing is off so anyone has any idea whats using my wifi when connected ?

Same here.  I have to manually kick off a sync, so have to go to my Mac.  If I forget, I don't have any new items.  I've also recently found that Podcasts no longer sync from iTunes, even once I start the sync manually.

How can I find the program using the wifi when the iPad 2 is sleeping or on? I have closed all apps and restarted the ipad. iCloud is off. Soon as you turn it on it will connect to wifi and start using the internet connection. (uploading or download)

It's supposed to do that. You can turn off WiFi if you don't want it to do that.

  • Using wifi on phone with suspended service

Tech-challenged mom here.  I suspended my teenage daughter's service.  She says she can still use her phone with wifi.  Is that true?  Can she talk/text?  Or only use games?

An android smartphone is quite functional as a wifi only device. They can't talk and text through the Verizon Wireless network, but they can access data, use instant messaging apps and games with a wifi connection.

I did a search today for a local doctors website and phone number using google.
When I clicked on the site I was first directed to a "app" to buy ****.
I closed the window and opened a new window and typed in the URL directly and then got redirected to to other **** sites.
When I tried on the desktop computer, everything was fine and got to the website normally.
I then cleared all history, cookies and web data.  Still the same redirect result going to the same website.
I did the above and shut down and restarted. Still the same thing.
I read about possible infected wireless routers where one of the tips was going to a different wireless network and see if it cleared up the issue.  So I turned off the wifi and turned one the ATT cell service.  Still same result.
I am looking for suggestion on what to do next.

    I did see that article.
Did you see where I said I used the Cell Service not wifi?  totally bypassed my wife router and its still doing weird sh_t
I am on ATT cell service and when I open Safari, instead of a blank window, it defaults to the BING website.  This is totally bypassing the router and using cell service.
I did a reset as per jazcan, installed 8.3 and still No Joy.

  • Not using WiFi when 'asleep'

I've noticed this a few times now on my home network.
When I wake my iPhone from sleep (ie. the screen is off but the phone is on) I have noticed that the 3G icon is displayed for a second before the Airport (WiFi) icon appears. Does this mean that the iPhone 3G uses only the 3G network when sleeping and it only uses the WiFi network when 'awake'?
    Has anyone else noticed this?

That is not a very useful response but thanks for your input...
Different carriers around the world have different arrangements for data. When I say 'non-existant' I'm talking about people that pay next to nothing for the phone plan and only get 5MB per month of data.
My argument is that if you're connected to your home network it would be *reasonable to assume* that ALL data is coming via your own network. There is nothing in the manual that would suggest otherwise. It should at least keep WiFi on if the iPhone is plugged in and charging.

Personally i don't care about other people's plans. Only my own. If it's not very useful, then stop asking stupid questions about when your not even using the phone.

  • Can not use message when phone is horizontal

When i want to use message and i turn the phone horizontal the screen turns off as soon as I start typing. This only happens in message. I can be using the internet and works just fine when i am typing.
There is no issues when i leave the phone vertical and use message.
Is there anything i can do to fix this issue?
    I have an iphone 4s

    Try this first:
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • IMessage using Wifi when Roaming

    Hi.
I am currently travelling to the US from Canada. When I am here I primarily turn my phone on airplane mode and then just connect to wifi.
Is it possible to send messages via iMessage to other iOS 5 users when only being connected to wifi and otherwise having my phone on airplane mode?

    Should work just fine.

  • Wifi when data service is off

Hi, next week Im travelling abroad, and I want to turn the data plan off, so my carrier doesent take all my assets and belongings away (we have the most expensive cell phone costs in the world in argentina). Nevertheless, i want to keep using my mail, bbm, twitter, and stuff through wi fi.
So what I did is turn off my data conection and turn on my wi fi in my house (the same thing I want to do abroad) and nothing worked.
I understand that what I wanna do is possible. In fact a bunch of people I know did it.
    What shall I do?
    Thanks

Please close all running apps in background. Or else, perform hard reset by pulling your battery while your BlackBerry is ON and reinsert again.

  • I'm thinking about using an iPad mini with data plan as a cell phone replacement, using Skype for phone service.

Seems like a less expensive alternative, with fewer devices.  Thoughts?

If you want to stay with your current plan, you would have to add 3 tiered data plans for the new smartphones. These would be $30/month(2 GB of data for each phone) for each of the data plans, increasing your bill by $90/month to $226/month for your total bill.
If you were to switch to the Share Everything plan, you would have an access fee of $40 for each of the lines for a total of $120. This would give you unlimited talk and text. On top of the $120, you would have to add a bucket of shared data which ALL of the phones would be able to access. For $80/month, you could get a bucket of 6 GB of data to be shared between all of the phones. So far that would bring your bill to $200/month. With taxes, it should end up being about the same cost as your old plan with the benefit of having unlimited minutes. If you find yourself using less data, you can cut your data cost by lowering the amount of shared data. For example, $70/ month for 4 GB of shared data. If you find yourself using more data, you can add more data, for example $90/month for 8 GB of shared data or $100/month for 10 GB of shared data instead of $80/month for 6 GB of shared data.
If you have any employee discounts available, these would ONLY come off the data portion of the Share Everything plan. Discounts on your current plan would not change if you currently have any.
    Decisions, decisions...

  • Can an iphone4 be used on a wifi connection like an iPod touch with out phone service? Apps etc?

If I have an iphone 4 and want to use it w out a cellular phone service is that possible with a wifi connection to use apps and the App Store like an iPod touch is used w a wifi service?

Yes it can be used as an iPod without cellular service but using WiFi when needed.  I recommend, however, that you keep your Sim card even after it is no longer active either on the iPhone or stored somewhere, as you would need it to be there if you need to re-activate the iPhone after a restore, should you ever need to do one.

  • Using WiFi as UMA mobile service.

Hi, I can't seem to get my Blackberry 8900 Curve to use the WiFi in my house as a mobile network. I've done this many times before, in different locations. My current service provider is T-Mobile and the service where I live is so bad that I often get no service at all. I found that I can bypass this by using WiFi as UMA  for the mobile network. Except this time, my blackberry refuses to use the WiFi as phone service. Does anyone know why this is? And i've already checked my phone settings; I have it on WiFi preferred. The phone is in fact getting the wireless connection because the WiFi icon is lit in the top right hand corner of the phone, and I can use the Internet on it when I have no phone service. Does anyone know why it's not letting me use the WiFi as phone service? Thanks

        safaritour,
I am glad to see that you are looking at options to keep up craft parenting techniques. For clarification are you trying to look for an app to change your wi-fi password through comcast? If so, it would be best to contact comcast directly to see what options they have for that. If through our Fios you can reach them here http://on.fb.me/SGYYEM. Each internet provider has there own security options and will be able to inform about best options, if any, to do so. Please keep us updated on this and if you have any other questions.

  • After updating to OS5, my iphone 4 can not send mail using wi fi and 3G.. only 1 or the other. It will not switch servers from using ATT 3G server to then using WiFi

I have called my internet provider, my email server company and AT&T. All my settings are fine and everything was fine before the OS5 upgrade. I can send email using WiFi when I have my email host as the outgoing server and can send email 3G using ATT server only when on 3G. The phone is not switching back and forth servers from wi fi connection to 3G.

    Hey there Jachin W.,
It sounds like you are unable to connect to your home Wi-Fi suddenly on 2 different iOS devices. I would be interested to know if the affected phones are able to connect to a different Wi-Fi connection, but barring that I would use the following article to help troubleshoot the devices and the Wi-Fi connection:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your Wi-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
And this section from toward the bottom if needed:
Unable to connect to a Wi-Fi network
Verify that you're attempting to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Make sure you're entering your Wi-Fi password correctly. Passwords may be case sensitive and may contain numbers or special characters.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling
