Using window outlines causes screen to temporarily freeze [UNFIXABLE]

Something minor but nonetheless annoying: when I set a window manager (any window manager) to use outlines when moving windows, moving or resizing a window causes the entire screen to stop updated. If a movie is playing, it will freeze while the window is being moved; if text is scrolling in a terminal, it won't update until I finish moving or resizing the window. This results in a choppy, stuttery experience.
When I use wireframes on Windows, of course, everything updates normally while moving a window.
Is there any way to get the expected (Windowsesque) behavior with X11?
Edit: In case anyone was wondering, this is apparently a problem with X11; the window manager has to grab the screen, or else it will leave bits of outline rectangle all over the place (which you can in fact see with KWin). Hard to believe stuff like that goes unfixed while 3D glitz gets all the attention... But what the heck, I'm free to fork it, so I'll stop complaining.

Edit mode causing screen trouble/computer freeze

When I am in iPhoto edit mode, inevitably at some point one or both of these will happen - the monitor screen will begin "mosaicing", starting with small color blocks in random places, and spreading over the entire screen. Sometimes everything freezes and I cannot move or shut down or activate anything, and in either case, I have to do an emergency shut down with the back button - upon restart everything is functioning properly again. The most recent episode, however, took 3 attempts to shut down the mac this way. AppleCare had me do all software updates and a permissions repair from the start-up disc, but this is still happening. Well that's another perfectly good theory ruined by facts!
Try create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

When I start Firefox using Windows 7 the screen is very small and I must hit Ctrl-+ to enlarge it.

I just switched from Windows XP to Windows 7. Now when I call up Foxfire the page is very small (about 1/4 size). I must click on Ctrl-+ several times to enlarge it. Is there any solution to avoid all this clicking?

Using windows 8, firefox 16.02 freezes for 5 minutes on every page

using windows 8, firefox (16.0.2) freezes for about 5 minutes on every page. Problem started two days ago. suspected Adobe flash, downloaded latest adobe update (Windows8-RT-KB2770041-x64.msu), fixed the problem for one windows 8 session.
Have reset firefox, default home page is the only page that does not freeze for five minutes.
Looking at task manager, firefox is sitting idle during the crash, it not using excessive memory.
My firefox is submitting crash reports about every 5 minutes.
Firefox is unusable in this state, I am resorting to using IE.

Looks like a problem with the Flash plugin or the plugin-container process.
You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:
*disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
*disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
*downgrade the Flash player to version 10.3 or 11.2

Touch screen doesn't work after upgrading to Windows 8
Follow the steps below if you upgraded to Windows 8 from a previous Windows operating system and your touch screen stopped working.
Activate Windows 8 and install updates:
Press the Windows + W keys, type Activate Windows into the Search field, and then click the icon that appears in the upper left corner of the screen.
In PC Settings, click on Activate Windows , wait for your computer to connect to Microsoft, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
Restart the computer.
Press the Windows + X keys, and select Control Panel from the list.
In the upper right corner of Control Panel, select Large icons from the View by drop-down.
Click Windows Update .
Install touch and/or graphics driver updates.
Restart the computer. If the touch screen still does not work, go on to the next step.
Check for driver updates at hp.com:
Go to hp.com (http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html) and click Drivers & Software .
In the search field, enter your product name or number, and then click Next .
Select your operating systems from the drop-down, and then click Next .

Disable the graphics card:
Press the Windows + X keys, and select Device Manager from the list.
In Device Manager, click the triangle next to Display adapters to expand the list.
Right-click on the graphics card, and then select Disable .
On the Window that reads "Disabling this device will cause it to stop functioning. Do you really want to disable it?", click Yes .
Restart the computer. If the touch screen still does not work, the computer should be serviced.

MBP 13 windows 7 blank screen

I'm sorry if I'm asking about this matter again when someone already give the solution which I can't find.
here's the thing. I got MBP 13 sandy bridge with OS X 10.6.7 bootcamp 3.2 and windows 7 x64.
when I'm using windows 7, the screen just goes blank after a few minutes. when I restart it, the screen goes blank again even since login screen.
I try to download a 'new' driver from intel website cause I think the problem occurs by display driver but that is not solve the problem.
so anytime I want to use windows, I need to disable display driver at device manager after boot up in save mode. and boot up again using normal windows but of course without display driver.
futhermore, anytime I savely remove my external hard drive, my keyboard and trackpad seems to be dead after I plug out the USB cable. so I need to keep the external storage until I finished using windows or I must restart the machine.
all the problem I experienced happen when I'm using windows. there is no problem when I'm using OS X. I already search for any solution about this matter but can't find the answer. hope someone can help me. thanks..

well.. since the problem is about monitor so I think there is some connection to display driver. and it confirmed when I disable display driver in device manager, but of course, I can't get any graphic capabilities for that condition.
what space do you mean? I still got about 2-3 gb space at my windows partition.

No Default ACL when using Windows Explorer?

No matter what Default ACL I specify on any user's account,
adding new documents using Windows Explorer causes an initial
ACL of "Published". Also, when I right-click on the iFS network
drive and select "iFS User Profile", it shows the Default ACL
as "Published".
Is this a known feature?
I want my users to be able to do everything from Windows
Explorer, but they need to copy and paste "template" folder
structures. If they do this in Windows Explorer, the ACL's do
not get copied. I could understand if someone says the pasted
folders are new folders, so they should get the user's Default
ACL, but even that isn't working, so the users must go through
each folder/file and reestablish an ACL using Windows Explorer.
BTW, The Web Application copies the ACLs in a copy/paste
operation.

HT5628 When using windows, the highest brightness level is like half of what it is on mac

Hi everybody,
I installed Windows 8 on my 2013 Macbook Pro through BootCamp. It was easy and without any complications during installation.
The problem presented itself when I started using Windows. The screen is too dim. I changed the brightness level to it's maximum but it is still way dimmer than it would be on OS X.
How do I fix this?

Try turning off adaptive brightness. That made a huge difference to mine.

I use the latest Firefox 13.0.1. I'm using Windows 7. After a day I updated my Adobe Flash Player, suddenly it crashed and showed a blue screen. Please help me.

A few minutes after opened the Firefox, suddenly it crashed and a blue screen showed up, it says there are unexpected error occured and forced my computer to be stopped. I need to restart the computer to see either it still show the blue screen or it just fine. After restarted, I use the Firefox once again, but this time, after about 30 minutes, it crashed again. The same blue screen showed up. As I expected, the new Adobe Flash Update crashes with the Firefox 13.0.1. Really need a solution here. Thank you.

Blue screens usually indicate Windows system level problems involving device drivers like graphics card drivers, hardware errors (RAM, hard drive) etc. Malware may also cause this. Searching for the displayed error code would usually provide helpful pointers. The [http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us Windows forum] would also be helpful.

[SOLVED] Compositing causes screen to freeze in KDE 4.7 with Nouveau

Hello,
since the upgrade to KDE 4.7 screen gets [partial] freezes for several seconds (differs) especialy when some repainting is to be done (scrolling in Rekonq/KWrite, opening and closing tabs in Rekonq, playing video in KDE). Usually I can stil see moving the mouse, though the cursor doesn't change on links etc. Also repainting of plasma widgets freezes.
I'm using nouvea driver for 7600 GS video card:

And get foloving in dmesg after a freeze:

Everything is ok with disabled compositing, or with nvidia driver, thogh I do not prefer to use it since it lacks KMS and is proprietary.
Any idea which splendid new feature of KDE 4.7 causes this? And how to turn it off so I can use compositing again? I tried diasbling new GL 2.0 shaders and setting worser filter in advanced Plasma settings but it didn't help.
I'll happily provide more info, if I am pointed which one.

3-D is currently an unsupported use-at-your-own-risk feature in nouveau. That leads me to conclude that neither project (kwin or nouveau) can be blamed at the moment.
I had irrecoverable freezes (had to ssh in and reboot) on my 9800 GT while playing videos fullscreen. Turning off the option to disable 3-D for full screen applications solved that problem for me. Compared to that, I'm okay with the temporary one-second freezes (which I see as well).
Your best bet is to play around and isolate which effects cause the issues for you. Start with no desktop effects checked and work your way up, adding one effect at a time. Maybe you'll discover the culprit that way. Hope that helps.

Anybody using the Windows 8 Start screen?

My original question was: Can we place bundle icons on the Windows 8 Start screen, alongside those "Modern/Metro" Windows apps?
But then I figured I should back up and ask whether anyone with a large ZCM deployment is even presenting the new Windows 8 Start screen to their users.
If you've deployed Windows 8, I'd love to hear your feedback.

I have test units that I am working with. I have had none of my current Start Menu apps showing up. This has been a minor item on my list of things to work with so I haven't investigated possible causes or if this is even supported. Honestly in my environment I would love to be able to push the older start menu/Desktop style and skip Metro. My teachers are going to freak when they start to use this new style. I had a hard time with the Windows 7 changes with some of the staff. My staff has a real hard time with change so Windows 8 is going to be a hard sell.
What type of devices are you looking at for Windows 8? I have been looking at whether I need to be looking for touch based Laptops or move to a more Tablet with a keyboard type environment.

I have found a fix after doing additional research through this forum. Tech Note #328730 addresses this problem and it works for Photoshop Album 3.2 even though it was written for release 1.0.

When using this fix the Tech Note indicates:
"Imported image data and tags are lost when you re-create the My Catalog.psa file, so you need to reimport images and reapply any tags"
however it did retain the captions (at least it did for me).

However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops. My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9. The DVD Player is version 4.0. My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2. The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0. The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
ls /Volumes

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
