Using Windows 2008 R2 RD Session Hosts in Windows 2012 RD Deployments

Just a couple of observations from our attempt to deploy Windows 2008 R2 RD Session Hosts as part of a Windows 2012 RD Deployment. Hopefully these save someone the angst of not finding answers in other documentation.
1. Our first hurdle was trying to add a Windows 2008 R2 server (RD02) as a Session Host in the Remote Desktop Services area in Server Manager on our Windows 2012 RD Deployment server (RDCB01), which had the Connection Broker, Web Access and Session
Host role services installed. After some side-tracking through AD issues, we eventually discovered that we had to manually add RD02 to the list of servers to manage in Server Manager on RDCB01. Then it was visible and could be selected.
2. Now that we could, we tried to actually add the RD02 Windows 2008 R2 Session Host to the 2012 Deployment. This failed the previously unheard of compatibility tests with the error "Compatibility check failed" "The server is not running at least {0}". A
list of requirements is shown:
You will not be able to proceed with the installation unless ALL the following criteria are met:
The server must be available by using Windows PowerShell remotely.
The server must be running at least Windows Server 2012.
The currently logged on user must be a member of the local Administrators group on the server.
The server must not have a pending start.
We were also concerned that we could not change many of the properties of Published Applications on our 2012 Publishing server. In our case changing an icon was critical for user acceptance to distinguish between application functions.
It seems RDS is an all or nothing approach between 208 R2 and 2012 versions. The only thing we were able to get going in time was some limited Published Application capability.
I agree with other posters in their assessments of wholesale changes to RDS in 2012, and a lack of readily available definitive information.

Hi,
It seems that no official documents suggest that 2008 r2 could be involved with the 2012 rds infra.Even on the server 08 and 08r2,i don't suggest mixing them for potential incompatibility.
Any further discussions about this issue are welcomed here for all of you.

    Can I use System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection in Azure Virtual Machine Gallary's "Windows Server Remote Desktop Session Host" without buy the System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection license ?
    I want to protect my Azure RemoteApp against the malware.
    System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection installed Azure Virtual Machine Gallary's "Windows Server Remote Desktop Session Host".
    Now, I try to build Azure RemoteApp template by using the  Azure Virtual Machine Gallary's "Windows Server Remote Desktop Session Host" .
    Regards,

    Hi Yoshihiro,
    Unless and until Microsoft modifies the license terms for System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection and/or modifies the Online Services Terms (OST) and/or other document explicitly saying that use is included with the Azure RemoteApp (ARA) monthly
    fee I recommend you assume as that it is
    not included and license it separately for ARA if that is even possible, which is a separate question.
    For licensing it is best to be cautious and make decisions based on the official documents that are available that govern use of the software and services involved.  At this moment I'm not able to find a Microsoft document that grants use of System
    Center 2012 Endpoint Protection with Azure RemoteApp.
    When I first used the gallery template and noticed that Endpoint Protection was installed within it I had the same question as you.  I will update this thread if/when I obtain more information.

  • Windows 2008 Group Policy not working in Windows 8.1

    Hi ,
    We found that the GPO settings created in Windows 2008 is not working in a Windows 8.1 machine.
    One example is the proxy settings.
    We confirmed from gpresult that the GPO is in the list but checking the actual proxy settings, it is not applied.
    Regards,
    Jhun

    Hi,
    How did we configure the proxy settings, using Internet Explorer Maintenance? If it is this case, just as Martin suggested, we can’t use IEM to manage
    IE 10 and IE 11.  However, we can configure the proxy setting via Group Policy Preferences (GPP).
    Regarding this point, the following blog can be referred to for more information.

    I am migratiing the schedule task from windows 2003 to windows 2008 and find some of behaviour change on handling user session by Task Scheduler.
    I have a simple batch to call "net use" command to map a network drive for copying file to remote server. And I have scheduled 3 similar tasks and run as same user (e.g. testuser)
    In windows 2003 enviornment, the mapped network drive resource will not be accessed by another schedule task. In windows 2008 R2, howerver, the network drive mapped in one of schedule task can be reached by another task. Does anyone have

    Hi,
    As the log, MSGR2CZ.DLL and wwlib.dll were both of the Microsoft libraries,not the third-party libraries. Thus, we need to analysis what happened with the dump file. But, it is beyond what we can do in the forum. I recommend you open a ticket with Microsoft
    engineer.

  • I can't install Windows 7 key over KMS host with WS 2012 R2

    For a KMShost with the OS=WS2012R2, you cannot, and, there is no need to, install any other Windows KMShost keys. The WS2012R2 KMShost key, by itself, will activate the KMShost OS, and will also enable the issuing of activations for ALL Windows KMSclients.
    Office KMS features are different, and do need to be installed for Office KMSclient activations.
    The error you are experiencing is expected, and is a result of your attempt to perform an unnecessary configuration step.

  • Relation between RD Connection broker and RD session host farm in 2012 R2

    Good Day
    I have configured standard RDS session based deployment recently on 2012 R2 servers
    Everything is working as expected
    The setup has TWO RD Session host, 1 Session Broker, one RD Web access and one RD Gateway
    I have created 2 DNS records named Rdsfarm.domain.com for my RDS1 and RDS2 session host servers and if I connect to this
    rdsfarm.domain.com with RDP from TS clients, i am able to connect to any one of TWO rds servers without any problem
    However some part is not clear to me
    I have not added rdsfarm.domain.com any where except my RD Gateway server RAP policy
    Also I have added my RD Broker server in RAP allowed group above.
    I don't see any config where this farm name is associated with my RD Broker server
    I have tried to connect to RD broker server from client, but it didn't redirect me to RD session host servers
    If I try to connect to my RDS servers with their FQDN , it gives me error that I must connect thru farm name
    Can you please help me to understand relation between RD session host servers farm and RD broker server ?
    Also I would like to know what exactly happens in background when user start RDP session by entering RDS farm name
    Note that RDS farm name is generic DNS Host(A) record pointing to my both RD session host servers
    I wanted to know is there any command or configuration I missed out as I don't see any config where Generic RD Session Host Farm name (DNS Host(A) record) is associated with my RD Broker server ?
    Thanks
    Best Regards
    Mahesh

    Hi,
    If you are opening Remote Desktop Connection and manually connecting to the broker then it will not work properly because you have no way of specifying the target collection in the user interface.  If manually using the RD Client to connect is a requirement
    what you can do is set the default collection in the RD Connection Broker server's registry.
    To specify the default collection, please create the registry setting below in the broker's registry:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\ClusterSettings
    DefaultTsvUrl     REG_SZ     tsv://vmresource.1.<VDI pool ID>
    To determine the correct value for DefaultTsvUrl please open RDWeb in a non-IE web browser and click on the icon for the collection you would like to be the default, then edit the downloaded rdp file with Notepad and copy the portion of the loadbalanceinfo
    setting that is similar to the above.
    An alternative would be to download the .rdp file from RD Web Access and double-click it to connect.
    As I mentioned above it is generally intended to have users connect via RD Web Access or RemoteApp and Desktop Connections feed or Remote Resources (uses the feed) so that the client will obtain the proper .rdp file from the server.
    To configure the FQDN that is published in the .rdp files you can use the cmdlet below:
    Change published FQDN for Server 2012 or 2012 R2 RDS Deployment
    http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Change-published-FQDN-for-2a029b80
    Below is a sample configuration based on what you have written:
    1. Published FQDN (using cmdlet above):  rdsfarm.domain.com  --> points to ip address of RDCB server.  When launching a RemoteApp or Full Desktop connection from RD Web Access, the prompt window will show this FQDN next to Remote computer.
    2. Gateway FQDN:  gateway.domain.com --> externally points to public ip address of your RD Gateway server.  TCP port 443 and UDP port 3391 need to be forwarded to the RDG's internal ip address.  When launching a RemoteApp or Full Desktop
    connection from RD Web Access, the prompt window will show this FQDN next to Gateway server.  This FQDN is set in Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Deployment Properties -- RD Gateway tab.
    In RD Gateway Manager -- Properties of RD RAP -- Network Resources tab you should select Allow user to connect to any network resource or define a RD Gateway-managed group that has all of the FQDNs that the user will need to connect to.
    3. RD Web Access FQDN:  remote.domain.com --> internally points to the ip address of your RDWeb server, externally points to the public ip address of your RDWeb server.  This is the name you give users if they want to use RD Web, for example,
    https://remote.domain.com/rdweb
    If you want users to manually connect using Remote Desktop Client as well as use RDWeb it will be a bit confusing to them since they will need to use one FQDN when manually using the client and a different FQDN when using RDWeb.  You could fix this
    by having them only use one method or run RDWeb directly on the RDCB server, that way users would only need to know a single FQDN for both RDWeb and manual connections.
    4. You should have a wildcard certificate with subject of *.domain.com set for all RDS purposes in Deployment Properties.
    Thanks.

  • Remote Desktop Session Host on Server 2012 not domain-joined

    I have a server 2012 which is running Remote Desktop Session Host role without the Connection Broker like described here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2833839
    Now the client would like the Network Level Authentication (NLA) disabled. And since server 2012 does not have the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool, I have to use the server manager console.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/630cc818-69b0-4e1c-8d65-1b895b20e203/where-is-the-remote-desktop-session-host-configuration-tool-in-server-2012-?forum=winserverTS
    But when I go to the remote Desktop Services of Server manager, it says “You are currently logged on as local administrator on the computer. You must be logged on as a domain user to manage servers and collections.”
    So I tried finding some Powershell cmdlet could help me with the problem. I guess
    Get-RDServer
    or Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration would be the ones but I can’t seem to make them work.
    Any help, or a hint that I going in the right direction or not?

    Hi,
    Have you configure the certificate for your server?
    Add the user under Remote Desktop user local group, configure FQDN name of server. Please see that if we are using RDS server in workgroup then most of the tools provided to make managing/configuring RDSH servers easier in 2012 will not work in a workgroup
    configuration including some PowerShell command. You can check the below article for information.
    Deploying a RDSH Server in a Workgroup – RDS 2012 R2
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Remote Desktop Session Host setup on 2012 r2

    Here is a screenshot

    I recently setup a 2012 r2 server for RDSH. We aren't using any VDI options but want to us it to host a specific application to multiple users.Problem: I Installed the role via the server manager and followed the wizard. I later went to the RD licensing manager to install the CALs. I chose the per user CAL option for 25 licenses and got the green light saying that the licenses are installed. However, whenever I log on I get the message say that I am in the "grace period" mode and that licensing is not configured. I look into the RD Licensing Diagnoser and it states that the number of licenses is 0 and this error message:
    "The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured."I looked up the issue online and found an article say that it's a known issue for per user CAL setup and the fix was to delete some...

    The component metadata for “Script Component, clsid {874F7595-FB5F-4OFF-9BAF-FBFF825OE3EF}” could not be upgraded to the newer version of the component. The PerformUpgrade method failed.
    Still the same package is running fine for some of the customers having SQL 2012.
    I am getting the above error only for few customers.
    Can someone please guide me how to proceed on this. Is there any solution to go without upgrading the package to SQL 2012. Because we need to maintain only one package for all customers

    Hi Katherine,
    I am just using the script component only for generating Identity column purpose. I will get the maximum count from the table and using this count value as Input (JurisCount in my below code) for script component and increment the counter for new records.
    Finally I am mapping the Script component output value (JurisKey in my below code) to Key column of the table. That's all I am doing with Script Component.
    Here is my Simple .net code
    /* Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services Script Component
    *  Write scripts using Microsoft Visual C# 2008.
    *  ScriptMain is the entry point class of the script.*/
    using System;
    using System.Data;
    using Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.Wrapper;
    using Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper;
    [Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.SSISScriptComponentEntryPointAttribute]
    public class ScriptMain : UserComponent
        public override void PreExecute()
            base.PreExecute();
              Add your code here for preprocessing or remove if not needed
        public override void PostExecute()
            base.PostExecute();
              Add your code here for postprocessing or remove if not needed
              You can set read/write variables here, for example:
              Variables.MyIntVar = 100
        int counter = 0;
        public override void Input0_ProcessInputRow(Input0Buffer Row)
            if (counter == 0)
                counter = Convert.ToInt32(Row.JurisCount);
            Row.JurisKey = counter;
            counter = counter + 1;

  • Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Service Role pickup 2012 RDS License Server.

    I am installing Citrix onto a Windows 2008 R2 server as part of this I need to setup the RDS Role on the same box and then point it to the Windows RDS License server.
    Our plan is to have a Windows 2012 License server for RDS Licenses i.e. install 2012 RDS Licenses.
    I was wondering if it was possible for a 2008 R2 RDS role to pick up 2012 RDS Licneses from a Windows 2012 RDS Server?
    Many thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Yes, agree with TP’s comment. You can also check below interoperability matrix link for details.

  • Windows 2008 R2 KMS server not activating Windows 8.1

    We have a 2008 R2 server running VAMT 3.1 and with KB2757817 installed. I added our Windows Server 2012 and Windows 2012 R2 KMS product keys to the KMS host as well as our Windows 8.1 KMS key, and restarted the system.
    So that when I look at the list of Product Keys I see the following keys:
    Windows Server 2012 RTM ServerDataCenter;ServerStandard;ServerMultiPointStandard;ServerMultiPointPremium Volume:CSVLK
    Win 8.1 RTM Enterprise;EnterpriseN;Professional;ProfessionalN Volume:CSVLK
    Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM ServerDataCenter;ServerStandard Volume:CSVLK
    Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM Std and Ent Volume:CSVLK (KMS_B)
    Windows 7 All Volume Editions Volume:CSVLK
    I then go to one of our Windows 8.1 systems and run the following commands:
    cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /skms <servername>
    cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato
    and I get the following error message:
    "Error: 0xC004F074 The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information."
    Meanwhile Windows 7 clients still activate without a problem.
    On the KMS host I run slmgr /dlv and get the following:

    My question is how do I get the 2008 R2 KMS host to activate Windows 8.1 clients?

    It's not possible to add Windows Vista/7/8.0/8.1 KMShost pkeys into a WindowServer OS - they will not install, because the KMShost pkey must activate the host OS as well as perform KMShost functions, and, a WindowsClientOS pkey will never be accepted on
    a WindowsServerOS.
    Similarly, you can't install multiple Windows pkeys - only the last (acceptable) pkey will be kept - all previous pkeys will be displaced/removed (last in wins).
    Your slmgr output clearly shows that you have the WS2008R2 KMShost pkey, in place. You need to install the WS2012R2 KMshost pkey to get your 8.1 KMSclients to activate.
    KMShost pkeys are "cumulative", i.e. WS2012R2 KMShost pkey will activate all lower versions of both WindowsServer and WindowsClient OS.

    Hi,
    Generally such kind of issues are caused by third party programs such as CD burning programs, device driver etc.
    First please refer to this article to see if there is anything helpful:
    Guide for Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff972408(v=ws.10).aspx
    Meanwhile from the description, it mentioned a file under  C:\Windows\winsxs. Check the permission of the folder amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_676975d87cc9b6e6 and the file wcp.dll to see if the permission
    and ownership are correct compare with the other folders.
    Also as it provided 2 minidump files, you will need to use WinDBG to read the minidump files and see if there is any further information.

  • Windows 2008 r2 guests blue screen on Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster with e5 2670-v2 processors

    Hello all,
    We have a new hyper-v infrastructure deployed in two brand new Dell R720 Servers with 384GB of Memory and dual Intel e5 2670-v2 processors. This infrastructure is replacing an existing hyper-v 2008 R2 and all the guests are being migrated to this new cluster.
    The issue we are seeing is our 2008 r2 guests blue screening ocasionally with 0x0000001a,0x0000004e or 0x00000050 bugchecks.
    All this guests are configured with dynamic memory and with the integration components up to date. These same guests were running with no problems in the hyper-v 2008r2 cluster.
    When searching i found this article from vmware that pretty much describes what we are facing:
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2073791
    Are you aware of the same problem with this kindd of hardware on windows 2012 r2 hyper-v?
    Thanks!
    Nuno Carvalho

    Meanwhile i found this May 2014 update on the intel specification of the CPU we are using:
    CA135 Incorrect Page Translation when EPT is enabled
    Problem:
    If EPT (Extended Page Tables) is enabled, then a complex sequence of internal processor events may result in unexpected page faults or use of incorrect page translations.
    Implication:
    Due to this erratum a guest may crash or experience unpredictable system behavior.
    Workaround:
    It is possible for the BIOS to contain a workaround for this erratum.
    Status:
    For the affected steppings, see the
    Summary Tables of Changes.
    This affects VMware as of the today update of the article i referenced in the first post, what about hyper-v?
