Using Windows 7 as a file server:

Hello All,
I am pretty new to networking, and have no experience with Mac Server, but a little bit with Windows server. I have a Windows PC at home, that I am using as a file server for my mac and other PC's. I have been able to get everything to see each other and talk to each other successfully, however, there is one item that is bothering me.
In my Login Options, the Network Account Server says it's not responding.
Although I can view and save files on my network shares I don't understand why I get this status message.
Thanks in advance.

Hiya.
Well, you've posted in the 10.6 Server forum and your question doesn't apply to Mac OS X server at all.
In terms of the Directory Server setting you're seeing, leave it be
There's no need for doing anything there.
That is intended for binding to a directory service which your Windows 7 machine is NOT running.
There's no Active Directory service running on your Win 7 machine, and without it (AD as Microsoft's directory service), you're not going to bind your Mac OS X workstation to it.
You might enjoy reading about the following, which are services and setup(s) that do not apply and are not available with the versions of Windows and Mac OS X that you're using:

  • Windows 2008 R2 File Server - user profiles appear underdirectory C:\user

I've a windows 2008 r2 file server and  few day ago I've noticed that under directory c:\users some user profiles have been created.
These users don't have rdp access to this server and don't use any ts application.
Is this a problem or a normal behavior?

    Hello,
IIRC this is normal behavior as they do a connect to the server to access the shared folders.

  • Source path too long :-Unable to delete mutiple number of folder and files from windows 2008 R2 file server

    Hi Team,
we have a file server on windows server 2008 R2, I have copied some data from one server to another server using robocopy . I have checked access permission it seems okay no issues with access permission. but when i am trying to delete these folder i am
    getting below error message
    Error message:-
The source file name are larger than is supported by the file system.try moving to a location which has a shorter path name or try renaming to shortcut names before attempting this operations

I have tried everything , but nothing help , getting same error
could any one help me regarding this.
    Regards, Triyambak
I have not looked at the other thread mentioned, but usually when this ends up happening, There are several ways to go about it.    One is to map a drive to the UNC path deeper into the folder structure.
    So instead of C:\long\path\that\we\dont\want\files\in
You map a drive.. lets say M:\   to     \\computer\c$\long\path\that\we\dont\want
Now, when you open Explorer to M:\ you've elimintated the length of the path down to M:\files\in which is completely usable.
The other way, is to shorten the names of everything.    For example...
    Folder structure like this:
    Root
    -----Folder1
    -----Folder2
    --------------Folder2A
    -----Folder3
    --------------Folder3A
Rename all the folders to shorten up the path.     Rename Folder1 to '1' Rename Folder2 to '2', Rename folder3 to '3.    Then try to delete.  If it's still too long,  go one folder deeper.   Rename Folder2A to '1'  and
Rename Folder3A to '1' and so on.     Basically keep renaming everything to a single digit character and eventually you'll shrink the path down to where you can shift-delete everything remaining.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to check DFS replication status in windows 2008 r2 file server

    Hi,
I have created File server DFS namespace between 2 windows 2008 R2 server. namespace mode is 2008. I have copied 3 TB data on file server 1. now it is getting replicated from file server 1 to file server 2. till now the data is not fully replicated.
My question is how can I check the status of DFS replication? how will I come to know that the initial replication is completed.

Scorpio. Yes you are right. Microsoft officially says it will not work. My apologies. Thanks for the correction.
Do Ultrasound and Sonar work with DFS Replication?
No. DFS Replication has its own set of monitoring and diagnostics tools. Ultrasound and Sonar are only capable of monitoring FRS.
Is there a way to know the state of replication?
Yes. There are a number of ways to monitor replication:
DFS Replication has a management pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007 that provides proactive monitoring.
DFS Replication has an in-box diagnostic report for the replication backlog, replication efficiency, and the number of files and folders in a given replication group.
Dfsrdiag.exe is a command-line tool that can generate a backlog count or trigger a propagation test. Both show the state of replication. Propagation shows you if files are being replicated to all nodes. Backlog shows you how many files still need to replicate
before two computers are in sync. The backlog count is the number of updates that a replication group member has not processed. On computers running Windows Server 2008 R2, Dfsrdiag.exe can also display the updates that DFS Replication is currently
    replicating.
Scripts can use WMI to collect backlog information—manually or through MOM.

  • Windows 2012 Standard File Server Clustering SMB Share Error: Access is denied.

    Hi All,
My setup consist of 2 nodes clustered with File Server role.  I can successfully failover role to either node with no issues.  But if I try to modify the permissions of any file share on my file server cluster I get the following error: Error
Occurred while updating an SMB share: Access is denied.  Access is denied.
Now I played around with the permissions on these shares and noticed that when I add the "everyone" group to these shares with change permissions I can successfully modify the shares with no errors.  If I removed the "everyone" group
I get the error.  So to tell its like some service or account needs permission to these shares to be able to modify them.  I don't want to keep "everyone" group on these shares.  Can anyone please shed some light on what group, user,
or service account needs permissions on these shared in order for me to modify these SMB shares without getting Access is denied.  Thanks

    Hi,
It seems your account don’t have the enough right to modify this clustered folder permission.

  • How to set up fax solution using Windows 2008 R2 Fax server role and Exchange 2007

    Hello,
I don't know if this is the right forum to post this but since it is related to Exchange I thought it might be. If this is not the right place, please direct me to the forum where my post would be more appropriate.
I'm looking to set up a Fax solution for the company that I work for as we are moving away from analog phone lines to VoIP using SIP. My original thought was to set up a Windows 2008 R2 server with Fax server role installed and have it route the fax message
to Exchange 2007 SP3 so the fax message can be delivered to each user's inbox. I was reading a little bit on the Windows Fax server role and from what I saw it looks like it can only route fax messages to one email address. This not ideal for my company. Is
there a way to have the fax server role route the email to each user's inbox? If so, how can I achieve this?
How can implement this for this sending outgoing faxes as well?
I don't know if this releveant or not but I will be using Asterisk as a media gateway between our SIP trunks and the Windows Fax server.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  • Using Windows 7 Default File Requester

    Hi
Is there any way to get Illustrator CS4 & CS5 to use the standard Windows file dialogue in the File menu 'save as' and 'open' options? I have a number of Favourites pointing to locations on the network where Adobe files are stored and it's laborious having to navigate there manually every time I save a new file. Other design software allows you to do this.
    Thanks for your time!

Is there any way to get Illustrator CS4 & CS5 to use the standard Windows file dialogue in the File menu 'save as' and 'open' options?
They are... It's just the one without the location bar. There is no way to enforce the location bar, this stuff is hard-coded in the apps themselves. The best you can do is create a dummy folder inside your "My Documents" folder that contains all your links. You might also add more paths by settings system variables and adjusting your group policies. It may also be worthwile to check whether you cannot do anything with mapping additional sub-folders to separate drive letters.

  • Windows 2012 R2 File Server Cluster Storage best practice

    Hi Team,
I am designing  Solution for 1700 VDi user's . I will use Microsoft Windows 2012 R2 Fileserver Cluster to host their Profile data by using Group Policy for Folder redirection.
I am looking best practice to define Storage disk size for User profile data . I am looking to have Single disk size of 30 TB to host user Profile data .Single disk which will spread across two Disk enclosure .
Please let me know if if single disk of 30 Tb can become any bottle neck to hold user active profile data .
I have SSD Writable disk in storage with FC connectivity.
    Thanks

    this article
General considerations during volume size planning:
Consider how long it will take if you ever have to run chkdsk. Chkdsk has gone significant improvements in 2012 R2, but it will still take a long time to run against a 30TB volume.  That's down time..
Consider how will volume size affect your RPO, RTO, DR, and SLA. It will take a long time to backup/restore a 30 TB volume.
Any operation on a 30TB volume like snapshot will pose performance and additional disk space challenges.
For these reasons many IT pros choose to keep volume size under 2TB. In your case, you can use 15x 2TB volumes instead of a single 30 TB volume.

  • Need reasons not to use SMB/win2003 as file server for mac clients

    hey guys,
i'm looking for reasons not to use windwos2003 as fileserver with smb for use with os x in a graphic production environment.
can someone help? just need a sum up for "internal use"
smb seems to be slower than afp
    etc...
    thank you!

Well, it tends to be that saving over the network from Adobe and Quark apps "just works better" over AFP than it does over SMB.
Put another way, people wouldn't be paying $4000 for a software license form Extreme-ZIP so they can serve AFP from a Windows 2003 server if there wasn't a real benefit to this. You can get an Xserve for this same $4000

  • File server machine

We are running windows sbs 2008 r2 in our network. We would like to bring up another server for file sharing within the network. Can we run windows 7 on a hp proliant dl360 g6 to do the file sharing?

I just wanted to add to this, yes you can use Windows 7 as file server. Something that you MUST do is tell Windows 7 that it will be used for file storage or you will have problems within about a week. Here is what you need to do to the registry:
    Navigate to: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache
    Set that key to "1"
    Navigate to: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size
    Set that key to "3"
To make things easier, you can copy and paste this text into notepad and save it as a .reg file and run that file.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
     [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters]
    "Size"=dword:00000003
     [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
    "LargeSystemCache"=dword:00000001

  • Slow applications start from win 2012 file server using win 7 workstations

I hope someone can help me with why applications are slow to load i have replaced a 8 year old server running  win 2003 and replaced it with dell t620 running win 2012 r2 it is like 20 times faster but it is slower than the old server. the office has
7 win 7 x64 machines all our applications are running from win 2012 file server. The server is set up as following the server runs with two hyper-v machines one machine runs ad, file server, dhcp, dns and printer server and the other is domino server and remote
    desktop.
the machine is more than capable but it is not so i started reading after i run out of ideas. i looked every where but the issue is with the server after trying everything else i did a simple test If i go to the application folder and click on it apps load
instantly if i then type a unc path it takes from instant load to 3 and a bit seconds the same as the workstations. The same speed if I use ip address.
    network cards are intel
i would really appreciate if somebody has suggestions that i could try
    thank you

    Hi,
Do you mean that applications in the application folder start slowly when you access the application folder on the Windows 2012 R2 file server from Windows 7 workstations using UNC path or IP address. Do all the files in the application folder have the same
issue? Please create a shared folder on the file server, then access the shared folder from Windows 7 workstations to check if the issue still exists.
You could disable SMBv3 on server 2012 to check if the issue related to SMB protocol.

  • Mac Lock Files on Windows File Server.

    Hi Pro,
got some problem with Mac based design studio who have some weird issues with files locking on a Windows Server 2008 R2 server. After investigation, it is 100% a file locking issue. Some programs including preview, acrobat, indesign, finder or opening files (assuming locking them) and not releasing. • Using Time Capsule as a File Server

In my current set-up, I need to use my 3TB Time Capsule as a router, time machine destination for a couple of Macs and as file server (about 1TB in size).
The file server files will not be on any of the Macs so need to be backed up separately to a 1TB USB drive.
Apple has confirmed that the TC can be partitioned easily and, although unsupported, you can use third party apps to back up the file server to an external drive.
Does anyone have any real experience of doing this?
I have the option to us e a different router and to sort the time machine back-ups without needing the TC which means the TC would be used only as a file server.  Would you recommend another product to the TC if you only needed a home file server?
    Any help much appreciated!

To answer your question, yes but I would not use two Time Capsules. Just purchase one Time Capsule and then one external hard drive (cheaper than a Time Capsule) and connect the hard drive to the Time Capsule via USB. You can use the Airport Utility to archive the contents of your Time Capsule to the external hard drive using the Archive feature (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281).
In fact, it may be worth buying two external hard drives so you can keep one offsite in case of disaster, theft, etc. You then rotate the external hard drives weekly (or whatever you choose) so you always have a current backup offsite.

  • Shortcut to File Server Using GPO

I would like to be able to push a shortcut out, using GPO to a file server.  The shortcut works individually on a desktop but I can not see how to push it out with GPO.  Basically I want it to go to \\servername and thats it.  I feel like
it should be a file system object but I dont get a shortcut when I use that.  If I do URL i get an icon but it doesn't load in explorer rather the internet browser.  Any help would be appreciated.

If I understand well, you would like to push shortcuts to end users desktops so that they can easily browse your File Servers. If this is the case then you can simply proceed like the following:
Prepare the shortcuts and put them in a share
Use xcopy command and prepare a script that copies the shortcuts from the share to your computers public profile desktop
    %public%\desktop
Deploy the script as a startup script
Once deployed and you restart the target computers, your end users (Domain and Non-Domain users) would be able to see the shortcuts coming on their desktops.
