Using Windows in iMac

I hope this fits in here. A local small town Mac dealer bundles Windows XP with a new iMac. I called an Apple Computer store in a big city near here in Silicon Valley and asked if they would do the same. I'm sorry, but I have to say this person was an absolute bimbo. No matter how I explained it directly, she couldn't understand. If all the Apple dealers bundled Windows with a new Mac, do you think they might get a little more business?
  Windows XP Pro

I recently attempted to adapt my intel based IMAC to the Parallels program
with disappointing results, so far.
Bought the full Windows XP sp2 O.S, bought the Parallels program, bought the Norton Security Program, and have been attempting to install.
Results have been poor. Have induced many hours of grief. Still not solved.
There are specific reasons to run a Windows program on my IMAC.
In my real estate business, there are essential programs available only through the local MLS system, which ONLY works with Internet Explorer, thus, the need for Windows. The specific programs I NEED are "Realfast contract forms" (with the state approved real estate contract forms), and the website www.vail.mlxchange.com, for all data concerned with real estate business.
Results,
Realfast does NOT support and Mac functions, and the mlxchange program can ONLY work through Internet Explorer.
Parallels company is very difficult to contact, Realfast contract forms doesn't want to talk to me, MLXchange won't even start up, the Windows O.S.program won't stay installed on my IMAC, who knows if the Norton security is working
(It also seems to have disappeared after installation)
I haven't attempted to contact the Window's people yet. It's difficult to imagine them being supportive of this program on the IMAC. Perhaps I would be wrong.
There isn't a Mac dealer open within 110 miles. Local tech guy won't show up at requests for appointments at his business, nor at my home. (of course, at a price)
I'll keep spending hours trying to make it work.
Frustrated.
Do I have to buy a dumb Windows computer to get these 2 or 3 critical programs?

    How to install Windows?
What do you plan to use Windows for?
If you install Windows natively you dual boot and later you can use some of the VMs to also run Windows as a guest OS under Mac and run apps side by side.
VirtualBox is free but does not work with Boot Camp. And Boot Camp Assistant (and guide, drivers, instructions) is used to create a parition for Windows to be installed on.
You need to buy Windows 7 or 8, 64-bit youself.
The most current drivers would be better and download from 10.8.3+ or manually.

why Apple manufacturing uses windows on iMac?

An Apple operating System does not include Windows.    You have to positively download it.

  • Why Isight is missing?, how to fix boot camp on 2008 iMAC using windows 8.1? can't redownload Lion.

Basically I'm troubleshooting, I have been having problems with my webcam ever since I installed a new hard drive, it seem's to be turned on due to the light above so I'm sure what else to do about it because both Windows/Mac OS aren't picking it up.
At first I thought there be some 'drivers' from the boot camp files that I could manually install, like I did with the other devices but that didn't seem to work for the camera. Also I hear Windows would be fine using either Boot Camp 4,5 to download the appropriate files but each time I try anything I get something about 'unsupported hardware' because before I could install Boot Camp 3 fine but before I was running under 32bit Windows because I hadn't realised at the time that the Mac was using 64bit so it seems like it has something to do with the conversion from 32 to 64 bit but that wouldn't make much sense the Mac OS as far as I'm aware was always 64bit.
And I noticed if I try to be download via the Mac side for the boot camp files then I get 'The Windows support software is not available' but to be fair I have never had any luck in the past with getting those files off the mac side ever.
So in short 2 problems Webcam, Boot Camp need to work but are currently having issues.
Also I can't redownload 'Lion' since it's been saying 'item not available', which is rather frustrating since I originally paid for it, I'm forced to stick to Snow Leopard, I'm baffled to why I can't redownload from my history like I do with Xbox or Steam.

Couldn't edit the question so thought add that the Imac camera light is turned on while using Windows, the Mac OS so it should be connected but it isn't.

  • How do I use the built-in microphone on my iMac while using Windows XP?

My iMac has a built-in microphone. My computer is set up with a partition to run either mac or windows. I would like to use the built-in microphone feature when I am using Windows XP. Is there any way that I can do this?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
assuming you have installed the neccessary BootCamp Drivers from the OSX Leopard DVD the internal mic is useable with any kind of recording software.
Windows itself has a rather rudimentary Audiorecorder program built-in.
For a more sophisticated recording program have a look at Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

  • How can I use windows software on the IMac

How can I use windows software on my iMac? I know I can partition the hard drive but do I need to buy Windows OS?

You can use Boot Camp, which comes with your Mac and install a copy of Windows on a new partition, or you can use a virtual application like Parallels.

Yes, it supports target display mode. Windows can be run with either Parallels or Boot Camp.

How to install and use icloud in imac windows 7 based

Have you carefully read iCloud - Learn how to set up iCloud & iCloud on a Mac?, What do I need? If you are trying to run on Windows 7 on your iMac and ignoring OS X well you're pretty much on your own. You would need to look for supports on Windows forums. If you happen to use BootCamp there is a Bootcamp forum that you can post on for BootCamp and Windows assistance.

  • Imac finder slow to start - time incorrect after using windows via bootcamp

Everything works fine on my imac except for the following annoying thing that I would like to understand.
After using bootcamp to use windows xp (that also works fine), after I reboot back into Macosx, "sometimes" the finder is noticeably relatively very slow to start (builds the finder window bit by bit) and 'always" the time has been set incorrectly even though I think I have set the windows date and time settings correctly. I use a product available from the macosx downloads called 'cocktail" to maintain the mac - this seems to ok. Both leopard and windows always start - windows has crashed once over the last 6mths or so - macosx never.
The time will reset after I use the date and time pref and toggle the auto update.
Otherwise the imac seems nice and healthy with no hangs or problems - even time machine is working fine. I am generally very impressed.

  • Using Windows, Create Mavericks Boot Disc for iMac

I have an iMac from 2008. It got stuck in an infinite boot loop, so I took it to the local Apple Store. After they ran some diagnostics, it was determined that it was either a bad Logic Board, or Hard Drive. Because of the age of the computer, he said he was unable to work on it. Said it was "legacy" or "vintage"or something. So he gave me a little direction on how to open it up, and how to get to the hard drive (I'm fairly comfortable working on hardware replacements). Using a borrowed hard drive, I was able to boot to a Windows XP install (this was an old hard drive out of a Windows PC), which tells me that the original hard drive is shot.
So I am going to purchase a new Hard Drive this weekend, but I am unsure how to install Mavericks. This is the only Mac I have access to, so I cannot use another Mac to create a bootable USB drive or CD/DVD. Mavericks doesn't come with a disc, so I cannot use that. Snow Leopard is the newest OS disc that I have, so I could use that, but was hoping to just do a clean Mavericks install instead.
I have a Time Machine backup from less than 2 weeks ago. Is it possible to use that backup to install the OS on a new, clean, hard drive?
Is there a way on a Windows computer, to make a boot USB drive that I can use on my iMac? Or am I better off using the Snow Leopard disc, and then use the App Store to update the OS?

You may need someone to build you a USB stick with Mavericks on it. Windows cannot build a HFS+ filesystem natively. You can boot from SL to let you have the ability to format the internal drive.
Ubuntu can build a HFS+ file system.

  • I have a late 2009 iMac, with a Nvidia 9400 Graphics card.  I was wondering what my options are for upgrading.  I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp, so I need a card that is compatible.

I have a late 2009 iMac, with the default Nvidia 9400 Graphics card.
I was wondering what my options are for upgrading.  I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp, so I need a card that is compatible/has available drivers.
This is for gaming. On the lowest settings of "Call of Duty 4", I get about 100 FPS... Was hoping to be able to play on higher resolution w/o the fps lag.
I'm not good with the hardware part of computers at all, but know how to get around the OS.

In most cases the graphics cards in iMacs are Not upgradeable.  They are usually soldered to the logic board.  RAM is considered, along with harddrives, the only component that is upgradeable in an iMac, unlike in PC's.  So basically you would need to sell your unit and purchase an iMac with a more powerful graphics card.
    Hope this helps

  • New to Apple, questions about using Windows, and other things

    Hello all,
Today is my first day as an Apple owner. It's funny because I'm also a MCSE, MCSA, and MCP.
    I purchased a 24" iMac, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, and 1TB Hard Drive.
I want to use Windows on my Mac so that I don't have to keep switching over to my PC. My main reason for using Windows is so that I can continue to enjoy my PC Games... mostly racing and D&D games.
So my question is... how does Windows run on bootcamp? Can I still use all of my USB controllers (like my steering wheels, joysticks, etc?)
I really havent even turned on my iMac... been too amazed at just looking at it for the first day (and also rearranging my home office).
I really just want to know from those of you who have PCs AND Macs, if you still find yourself having to go back to your PC because of incompatibilities or performance issues on the iMac?

Using BootCamp, your Windows experience is no different than if running it on a similarly configured PC. If you went with a VM running under Mac OS X (like VMWare or Parallels), there are a number of differences. However, using BootCamp you have a Mac-branded PC.
I'd point out that people have been dual-booting operating systems in this fashion for decades. Windows has no obvious in-built support for doing so, but other operating systems (like Linux, FreeBSD, etc.) have always very clearly and explicitly supported dual-booting (on Macs and regular PCs) from the get go.

  • There is a lot of talk aout there about using a 27" iMac as a display with the mini displayport to displayport cable. It is so exciting! I am trying to connect a PC laptop with a VGA port to a 27" Dell Latitude D620?

In 2010 there was a question about using a 27" iMac as a display with a Dell laptop.
I am trying to connect a work Dell laptop Running Windows XP via a VGA cable to my personal iMac 27"
    running iMac 27", Mac OS X (10.6)
Has anyone tried this or know if imac 27" Mini port with a VGA adapter can work?
I apologize if I missed this discussion already
    Kind Regards
    Gilly

    Hi Gilly,
I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.
