Using windows xp on a mac book pro!

umm kinda a weird question.
if i need to use a windows based device with the mac book, and i just plug it into the usb port and then access it within parallels?
the device in question is a USB modem provided from a cell phone company that allows me to use the internet. and its windows only.
i currently do not have a mac book, but sometime within the next few weeks im hoping to get one.
and i just want to find as much information as possible
thanks

Hi irishking;
Sorry but I am not able to answer your question because I do not do anything with M$.
I will say that everything I have heard about USB modem has been bad. They have to have drivers on the computer in order to work so in order to upgrade you must be sure to get new drivers first. Then when they are working their performance is less then stellar.
My suggestion would be to trash the USB modem and replace it with an Ethernet Modem. They don't require drivers and they perform much better.
I know that when I switched to DSL the phone company want to give me a USB modem that was Windows only. I said no that if that was all they had I was canceling the contract because I had Mac and I wanted something that worked with Mac. All of a sudden they found an Ethernet modem for me.

What videos? What are you using to try to play them?

Can I run a windows based program on mac book pro mountain lion 10.8.4

You can use bootcamp to install windows natively on the hard drive.  You then choose which OS you wish to use at startup - OS X or Windows.
You can also install Windows in a virtual machine - Parallels or VMWare Fusion - and run it simultaneously with OS X (a virtual machine is just a PC emulated in software, and you install and run windows in the emulated machine hardware).

No. The newest Mac OS X version capable of setting up Windows XP or Vista in Boot Camp is 10.6.8, which is too old for that Mac model.
You may be able to use it inside a product such as VirtualBox, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion.

I am programmer and I am using dr java on my mac-book pro with retina display but dr java doesn't support retina display, what is the possible way to solve this ?

I have made some progress.... I can print wirelessly from my printer now, but I can't set the printer itself to be wireless.  I had to move my printer downstairs to where my router is...which is not that convient.   I printed up the page you asked about....and as expected, it says it is off line and there is no IP address.    So now I need to figure out how to make my printer itself wireless.  I did download the HP driver I needed...but I can't access it to do anything else.  It seems l like I am missing a step... or I need to hook up my computer itself to the printer to help get the printer to be wirelss, but I can't hook it up because there is no port for me to do that (no port that looks like a phone jack).  I am guessing I would need a different type of cord, but I am not sure what kind of cord that would be! Ugh!

  • Using my TV as my mac book pro monitor

    Hi Everyone
    I hope you can help.
I just bought a new 40 inch Sony Bravia LCD TV, an HDMI cable and the thing you need because my mac book pro does not have an HDMI output.
Using my mac and my TV screen as a mirror image i can not use the whole tv screen. It either leaves about 2 inches on both sides of the scheen or in wide mode it leaves about 1.5 inches on the top and bottom... I am wondering if there is a way to sort this out some i can have my computer screen and TV screen a mirror image and use the whole TV screen?
I am hopefull that someone knows what i am talking about! If you want more description i will be able to write more!!!
Thanks in advace for your help!!!!
    Andrew

Don't use mirroring as the image on the TV will direct pixel for pixel copy of the MBP's screen, and hence won't use the native resolution of the TV which is probably 1080p.  Go into System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement and turn off display mirroring, then you can use the full native resolution of the TV and won't have the black bands.

  • What SACRIFICES do you make using Final Cut on a Mac Book Pro ?

I have a somewhat similar question to one posted below...
...but it seems like a broad question resulted in broad answers so let me pose it a different way.
I need a machine to handle HD video and I'm also considering a Mac Book Pro because of space considerations and the fact that it seems handy to be able to pick it up and take it to a coffee shop should need be.
But WHAT WILL I BE SACRIFICING as compared to an iMac or Mac Pro if I opt for portability? Will, say, renders take twice as long, crashes happen twice as often, etc.? Any Final Cut Pro users with both desk and laptop out there that could advise of the difference?
    Thanks.

You are not sacrificing anything you can't deal with sacrificing. I have both systems, and the only drawback I have had yet is that you can't connect a laptop to a fiber network. But you can still connect through gigE. If SAN and distributed processing are not part of your workflow this doesn't concern you. The processor is a bit slower, but if you plan your time well you won't miss your deadlines.
There are not 8 processors in a MacPro. There are only 2 processors with 8 cores. A core is not an individual processor. But the MacBook Pro only has 1 dual core processor. So you have 6 less cores and 1 less processor. But the MBPro is still very fast. The DVD burner in the MacPro is faster, but the one in the MacBook Pro is a better drive. YOu can get a better graphics card in the MacPro, but if you're not doing graphics or 3d design the MacBook Pro will do wonderfully. An extra monitor makes the MacBook Pro just as easy to use as a tower but, like you said, you can unplug the monitor and take the computer with you, which is very convenient.
My recommendation is, relative to the criteria above, to get the laptop if you can only get one. Use the extra money to buy some accessories like a keyboard, mouse/tablet, monitor (Dell 2408 is a fantastic monitor and inexpensive), and a fast external hard drive. Lacie makes a nice drive called Little Big Disk and comes at 7200 RPM (necessary for video editing) and as large as 640GB in capacity. And it takes power from the Firewire 800 port. It also has eSATA, so with an express34 card you can get incredibly fast transfer rates.
The towers are great, but unless you need King Kong strength in your system, you're better off with the laptop.
Just my thoughts. I just sold my G5 'cause I haven't used it since I got the laptop. I have two MacPros and I usually just use them to add to my distributed processing. I do all my editing from the laptop.
    Hope this helps.
