Using Wired Connection on a Laptop with an adapter

Hello,
I have a Linksys Router WRT54GX2 connected wired to a Toshiba Laptop.  I have a Dell Laptop with a WPC54GX4 notebook adapter.  The wired connection has worked perfectly since the beginning, but I have had terrible problems with the wireless connection.  It will connect fine, but after 5 minutes or so, it will start to degrade and finally die.  I have other people bring their notebooks to my place and I have been able to duplicate the problem on their machines, so I know it is not the adapter.  I tried everything that technical support has told me, but nothing has worked and basically I have given up.  My question though is if I am using the dell laptop wirelessly and the connection dies in the middle of a download or something and I just want to disconnect the wired connection from the Toshiba and put it in the Dell, do I have to disable the adapter first or can I just plug it in as it is?
- Paul

Hai,
I will tell you some of the steps you can try..
If you are having a cable ISP provider means,
  1. Hard reset the router. (But not for all the time.. it will let the router to gone bad)
   2. logon to the router setup page .personalize your wireless settings.
change the wireless ssid , channel -11
   3. secure your wireless network.. so that you can avoid frequent disconnection.
  4. upgrade the firmware 1.01.14
i am sure it will work..

In 2010 there was a question about using a 27" iMac as a display with a Dell laptop.
I am trying to connect a work Dell laptop Running Windows XP via a VGA cable to my personal iMac 27"
    running iMac 27", Mac OS X (10.6)
Has anyone tried this or know if imac 27" Mini port with a VGA adapter can work?
I apologize if I missed this discussion already

    Hi Gilly,
I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.

  • How do I disconnect from Wireless to use wired connection?

Hi - I'm new to this and I apologize if this question is ridiculously easy.
I am using a cable modem in which I have plugged my WRT160Nv2 wireless router. I am supporting three computers here in my home; my laptop (both wired and wireless), my daughters laptop (wireless only), and my desktop (wired only).
Everything works great and I have to give all the credit to CISCO and the excellent software which automatically solves every connection problem that comes up.
My laptop and desktop are connected to the wireless router via cable.
My question is strictly about my laptop. When I leave my office in the house and go into another room, I establish the wireless connection. Now I am back in my home office room, I want to use my wired connection. How do I do this? Do I need to disable my wireless connection so that my wired connection takes over? Again, I do have my laptop connected to the wireless router via cat5.
I want to do this strictly for the speed of the connection. I've read that a wired connection is double if not more in Mbps.
This laptop is running Win XP Pro, SP3.
I hope this furnishes enough info to assist in an answer.
    Thanks in advance.
    John
P.S.. I really do want to educate myself regarding the equipment I am using and not have to ask such basic questions. Are there any books or websites you can recommend that can start me out and go as technical as I choose to?

Windows by default uses the fastest connection possible. If you have a wireless and wired connection active at the same time it depends on how fast both connections are rated. Wireless connections tend to change depending on the distance. Wireless 802.11g goes up to 54 Mbit/s. Wireless 802.11n can go up to some 300 Mbit/s. Wired connections are usually either gigabit ethernet (1000 Mbit/s) or fastethernet (100 Mbit/s).
Thus, which is picked depends on your computer. You should check the connection status of both connections in the network connections control panel. It shows you the current wireless and wired speed (the latter won't change of course). Very often, the wired connection is preferred to the wireless connection. Now with 802.11n connections the wireless connection is preferred if your wired connection is only fastethernet.
As your WRT160Nv2 has only FastEthernet LAN ports you have to check how fast the wireless connection is. If you have a 802.11n wireless adapter in your laptop it may show up the wireless connection faster then 100 Mbit/s. Depending on the setting it may change occassionally between 54 Mbit/s and speeds higher then 100 Mbit/s which would lead Windows to swap connections. If you see that problem it is better to switch off the wireless in the laptop while you have a wired connection...
A wired connection is more reliable and stable then a wireless connection. With wireless you can have interference. Thus, even though a wired connection may be slower then a wireless one you may prefer to use the wired connection anyway. And some people prefer to turn off the wireless to avoid radiation.
To sum up: usually you don't have to switch off the wireless, unless you experience problems because of the mentioned changing speeds of the wireless connection. The computer will always only use one connection. Not both.

  • Force Win 8 to use wired connection

    Hi Folks,
I'm running Win8 on an Acer Desktop.  I have cable internet from Comcast, with the modem running thru a router, then to the pc.
I want to be able to use the wired connection for the desktop access to the internet, and use the wireless ONLY for the other devices in the house, i.e., laptop in another room, blu-ray player, printer.  However, no matter what I do, the desktop uses
the [much slower!] wireless connection, rather than the wired one.
I've hunted on the net for a solution, but nothing I've found works.  Anyone have a solution?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Unhappily, when I open Network Connections and Advanced Settings, the first item shown in your screen shot, "vEthernet (VNIC)," is not there.  The other three are shown, just as in your screen shot, but vEthernet (VNIC)
    is absent.
I bypassed the router and connected directly to the pc from the modem, and my speeds are 3 or 4 times faster.  Of course, I then no longer have wireless connections for my other devices.
While I had the pc directly connected to the modem, I checked the Network Connections again, but "vEthernet (VNIC) was still not on the list.
Any ideas?  I'd really like to make this work, and I can't understand why the pc, having a wired connection, insists on connecting wirelessly.

    Hi Allan!
I suggest you replace your switch for a router. The purpose of a router is to connect two networks. In your case it would connect your local computer network (Macs, server and PC) to the Internet. Having your DSL on a switch with the rest of your machines means that only one at a time should be able to connect to the Internet.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Attempting to connect daughter's laptop with a Neatgear wireless card

I am trying to connect my daughter's laptop to my network. I have downloaded Network Magic, etc.  Is there an easy step-by step tutorial or checklist I can access to connect her to my router? Network Magic is telling me that I have other network connection software and it has to be disabled before continuing (**bleep**?).  I am being driven mad. Just need to have a step by step list to get it connected. If necessary, I can delete everything (Network Magic, etc,. and the like) and start fresh if that is necessary. Any experts available to help?  Thanks in advance,
Forgot to mention that she is using a Netgear MA 401 wireless card.  Router is the WRG54S Version 7.

Which operating system you are using on the computer...?
Are you able to connect other wireless computer to your network..?
First of all make sure that your adapter is installed properly on the wireless computer..Go to the linksys setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar from the wired computer and change the wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz.Change the SSID (network name) to some unique name(not linksys)...Confirm the Network/Security key. Now,locate and try to connect the wireless network on the wireless computer.

  • Can WRT54G connect 2 XP laptops with different wireless cards, i.e. b and g,?

My WRT54G router works fine with a lenovo windows laptop (Intel wireless 3945ABG card) and my dell linux box but it is not accepting my old T40 laptop which has a dual-band wireless a/b card.   The WRT54G box indicates this router accepts both b and g wireless cards.
Question is can this router  simultaneously  hookup these 2 laptops  or do I have to resetup the router in order for it to work on the T40?
as it is now, the wireless network shows on my T40 and it appears to 'take' the access key i input but then the T40 just 'hangs' trying to get into that network.   I have set the encryption key on the router to WPA. and i want to keep this.

Make sure the computer that can't connect has DHCP enabled, Update the computer wireless card drivers, Check that the security you entered is correct.

  • Using app store on two laptops with one apple id

Hello,  I have two laptops - MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.  I use the app store on my MacBook Pro frequently.  I have recently purchased a MacBook Air.  I logged in to the app store, using my apple id, on my new MacBook Air to install apps.  However,  when I search for an app it says installed (which is actually installed in my MacBook Pro).  Is there a way to get around this?  And install apps on a new Mac using the same apple id.  All my products are linked to one apple id.   Do I need to create a new apple id to install apps on a new laptop.
Also,  until recently I was residing in the United States.  I have recently changed my address to India in my apple account.  The app store is now linked to the Indian store.

Click on the Purchases icon in the App Store's toolbar. Locate the apps you wish to download. You should see an Install/Download button to the right of the entries.

Try to disable the SPI firewall. We have a tendency to disable this feature if we ran out of options. It’s still not recommended to disable SPI firewall on the router because this serves as the protector of your network...
