Using Wireless Router instead of Ethernet Bridge?

I have read through some threads here about using an ethernet bridge to add wireless connectivity to an old Bondi blue 233. I am interested in looking into this. But I recently ran across some information stating that it is cheaper to just buy another wireless router and hook this up to the Bondi and use this setup to "join an existing network". Has anyone done this? What are the pros and cons? Thanks.
Steve M.

There are only a few devices that have multiple uses. I use a DLink DWL G703AP on my daughter's iMac for wireless connectivity. If you look it up on the DLink site you can see its capabilities. I am sure there are other devices with similar capabilities.

  • Want to use linksys wrt300n as a ethernet bridge while the router is a time capsule.

The time capsule is connect to my modem and my wrt300 is downstairs. What I want to do I use my time capsule a my router and the wrt300 as my ethernet bridge. How do I set my wrt recieve the single from my time capsule. The wrt300. Is running dd-wrt firmware. The reason I want to do this is that I have a slingbox and it needs to be connected by Ethernet. By using the wrt as a Ethernet bridge it should work. I just need to know how.

All sounds good.. tend to use the older dd-wrt firmware to do this.. 2.4 linux kernel is far more successful than later 2.6 versions of dd-wrt.
You must manually setup wireless.. plainly only 2.4ghz is going to work.
So jump into the airport utility manual setup.. and go to the wireless page.
Depending on how old your TC is, setup a wireless name.. no spaces no special characters.. very short also is just as useful as very long. tc24 will do nicely.. Change the name of the 5ghz if it is later model to something also similarly simple.. tc5 might be nice. Call the TC a nice name again no spaces.. which it will have by default.. no special characters pure alphanumeric. TC is nice simple name.. Hard to forget really.
Set manual channels for the 2.4ghz.. this is utterly important.. repeater or bridge does not work with auto bouncing all around the place. Choose a suitable channel out of 1, 6, 11.
5ghz won't matter so you can leave that on auto if you want.
    Lastly security..
Let me suggest to start leave security off. Get it setup so you know it works then come back and test the security levels.
I am not sure what to select here.. you want wpa but the dd-wrt says not wpa+wpa2..and apple do not offer straight wpa as the bridge cannot resolve which to use.. you might need to use wpa2.. but that doesn't work on some routers with repeater.. or bridge.. you are going to have a bit of trial and error here.
Make the password something nice.. you guessed it pure alphanumeric.. no spaces, no special characters.
be creative and simple.. tc24passkeynot5 .. of course use what you like.. I am giving examples to make it easier. Update the TC.
Now just do the bridge setup on the WRT300.. there are two kinds of bridge.. client bridge and wireless bridge.. there is also repeater. Client bridge has no routing .. that is what you want. But it does other things which may make you go back. Please note bridges are strange beasts.. this is going to hide clients behind the Linksys MAC address.. and it can lead to issues.
Anyway read the setup tutorial. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged
You will find earlier one if you use the index.. this is also useful to read. And is more extensive.
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge
There are several scattered around and I can point you to others.
When you are finished you will often need to reboot both boxes to get the bridge to establish.
Once you are done. See how it goes..
I tend to advise people that wireless bridges are flakey and will do down at the moment you want them to work. You can get EOP adapters which tend to be more reliable and use the WRT300n in wan bypass as a switch and WAP.. This is much more reliable.

  • Can you use a 3600 for an Ethernet bridge??

Can you use a Cisco 3600 to do a P2P bridge? Using the MAP's ethernet port  to connect to a remote LAN?  On that remote LAN can you have  lightweight APs that connect to a controller on the RAP side?

Can you use a 3600 for an Ethernet bridge??

Check - Converting Indoor Access Points to Mesh Access Points
Ethernet bridging has to be enabled for the following two scenarios:
    1. When you want to use the mesh nodes as bridges.
    2. When you want to connect Ethernet devices such as a video camera on the MAP using its Ethernet port.
    Wireless Backhaul:
In a Cisco wireless backhaul network, traffic can be bridged between MAPs and RAPs. This traffic can
be from wired devices that are being bridged by the wireless mesh or CAPWAP traffic from the mesh
    access points.
Guidelines For Using Voice on the Mesh Network
    • Voice is supported only on indoor mesh networks in release 5.2, 6.0, 7.0, and 7.0.116.0. For
outdoors, voice is supported on a best-effort basis on a mesh infrastructure.
    other factors to note:-
#you would be running on backhaul using A radio which is prone to DFS.
#CAPWAP may not tolerent enough with AWPP convergence on MAP roaming.
#CAPWAP is more latency sensitive than voice.

  • I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. Any tips on how to do this?

I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. I installed the current Bonjour printer services software on the Windows machine, and separately installed the driver software for the Epson printer on the WIndows machine.  Running the bonjour wizard, I get an alert saying 'I don't have sufficient access to my computer to connect to the selected printer'.
The printer has 'sharing' turned on from the Mac end; this works with a Powerbook via the wireless connection.  Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties).  The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8.  When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!

  • Can't get e-mail to work using wireless router . . .

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to help my sister get her e-mail working. She is running a Macbook with 10.5. She is sharing an Internet connection with a PC, via a wireless router (a D-Link unit). The ethernet goes from the modem to the router, where it is hooked into the PC via cable. Her Macbook is accessing the router wirelessly via Airport.
She can surf the net perfectly fine, however, she has no e-mail functions. When she tries to send or receive e-mails, she gets error messages about ports being unable to send or receive info. If she plugs the ethernet cable directly into her laptop (instead of going wireless), e-mail works perfectly fine.
Any ideas where I can look? I played around for a couple of hours but couldn't come up with anything. I have no experience with networking, however, my hunch is that it's some sort of settings problem with the router that are preventing her e-mail from working in this setup. The bizarre thing is that everything was working fine a few days ago and then the e-mail servers went down with her ISP (neither the PC or Mac could get e-mail). When they came back up, the PC was able to run some self-diagnostic software and resolve it's e-mail issues, but the problems with the Macbook persist.
We could simply just hook everything back up to "hard" wires through a switch, but she really wants the wireless functionality.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response orangekay. As it turns out, they took back the router that they had bought and they picked up an AirPort Express station and now everything is working perfectly fine again.
Still not sure what the exact problem was but my sister is happy with how things worked out

  • Use wireless router with existing network and switch?

I have an existing network using a T1 into a switch; all the computers and the server are connected to the switch. Some distance away, via ethernet cable to the switch, I would like to connect a wireless router, one computer wired to that router, and other computers connect via wireless. Our server provides DHCP. Is this possible? How best to do it? Which Linksys router would be best for the purpose? Thanks for the help!

The "correct" device to use would be a wireless access point like the Linksys WAPs and not a WRT router. WRT routers are supposed to connect to the internet on its own.
You can set up a WRT router as simple access point. see here for the setup.
The best router is the one which best suits your needs. All wireless routers and access point provide wireless access. It depends on what you want (802.11n, 11b, 11g, range, speed, etc.). The newer routers are better from the specifications but usually also have more firmware bugs. But that's pretty much all one can say based on your generic requirements.

  • Using wireless router for Playstation Portable connection

I've had my PSP for a little while now and I mainly use it for it's internet feature. I've been using my router (with wireless connection) for my laptops for years and so things have been completely fine logging onto the internet with my PSP. I recently downloaded an update for my PSP and the internet connection started to slow down A LOT. Now, I can't connect to the internet at all. I know some people may say to contact Sony about this, but I'm sure Sony's first response would be to contact my router manufacturer. Does anyone know what I can do?
My model number is WRT150 V1.1 and I heard that it may have to do with the MAC address for my PSP but I cannot find ANYWHERE in the setting for my router where I can allow a certain MAC address permission to use the wireless network.
If anyone knows anything, please share. Thank you!

To enable MAC Address Filtering follow the link here , the link will only give you screenshots to find the MAC Address of an Ethernet Adapter Wireless Network Connection and not for a play Station...
If you know the MAC add of your PSPyou can follow the link from where it says "Permitting Wireless PC from Accessing Your Network"

  • DSL Connection Very slow ONLY when using wireless router

My DSL connection was running super slow (approx 136 Kbs) - I disconnected the Linksys wireless router and plugged by DSL modem directly into the computer.  Then my internet speed increased to 1.4 Mbs (a 10 fold increase).
Any suggestions on how / why my speed drops so extensively when using the Linksys wireless routher (wrt45g).
    Thanks

Are you using the same test each time to measure the speed?
The reason I ask is that Windows usually reports its download speed in KB/sec (Kilobytes per second).  But most web (internet) speed tests report their speed in Mbps (Megabits per second.)
A 1.4 Mbps line will typically pass data at about 140KB/sec.
To help determine what kind of problem you are having, do the same speed test in 3 different ways:
    1)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your modem
    2)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
    3)  Connect one computer, wirelessly, to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
Report back your results, and also, please state what line speed you are paying for.  Once we have this, we will hopefully be able to help you.

  • Unable to maintain internet connection using wireless router

I posted a bug report with Apple, 7229097. Not sure if anyone has been able to fix this. I tried the suggestions on the board (create location, reboot router, clean install, normal install, delete config etc.) I have narrowed the issue down to my router, which works fine under 10.5.8.
    Summary:
I have trouble maintaining an internet connection using my Dell TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router, model wx-6215D. If I connect directly to my cable modem, I have no internet issues. So, it seems the issue is using the Router, both wireless or using RJ45 cable.
    Steps to reproduce:
Connect to my wireless router using Airport or RJ45. Browse to a page using Safari or Firefox. First page usually comes up, but is incomplete. Start using refresh or click on more pages, after 1 - 5 refreshes, clicking on links, you get a notice that you are no longer connected to the internet. If you open terminal and execute "dscacheutil -flushcache" you can get your internet back, but will degrade to no internet after 1 - 5 page refreshes.
    Expected result:
    Internet browsing should be fine
    Actual result:
Internet degrades until browser reports no internet connection.
    Regression:
Go back to 10.5.8 system and no problem exists. Only happens when you upgrade to 10.6 and 10.6.1.
    Notes:
I have tried doing the recommended installation, and erasing the hard drive and installing - in both cases I have the same result. Router works fine for PC and 10.5.8. I have since installed 10.6.1 to a USB drive to do any further testing and would appreciate a patch or a timeline for a patch before I move my system to 10.6.1

I tried adding in the OpenDNS ip 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
It appears that the router is hijacking DNS calls.
Funny thing though, DNS is resoving through the router, .2.1
    nslookup apple.com
;; reply from unexpected source: 192.168.2.1#53, expected 208.67.222.222#53
;; reply from unexpected source: 192.168.2.1#53, expected 208.67.220.220#53
    Server: 192.168.2.1
    Address: 192.168.2.1#53
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: apple.com
    Address: 17.251.200.70
So, the router is giving up the IP address. Also, even though Safari, Firefox and others report no internet, nslookupk continues to work. The router works, but 10.6.1 doesn't seem to like what it gets from the router. Also, not sure a firmware upgrade is required for the router, if there even is one, because it works with both of my PCs and my Mac running 10.5.8.

  • 2 systems using wireless router until I ran Windows local network setup

We have two computers accessing the internet via our wireless router. One is connected via a cable (a desktop PC), the other via a wireless connection. They both ran fine until I ran the setup for a local network--trying to connect the two to share printers, etc. Now only the laptop can access the internet. The desktop cannot. How do I fix this? We have an AMD Athlon 2800+ desktop running XP and an HP AMD Turion laptop running Vista. The wireless router is the model WRT54GX2 ver 2.

Check the Ethernet connection from Desktop to router. Also check Ip on desktop
If it is 192.168.1.X …..Try getting reply from gateway address. If so then try going online.
If you are not getting valid Ip address on Local area connection, then try changing port on router, do power cycle or lower down the Ethernet card speed to 10half Mbps.

  • Can't Get E-mail Using Wireless Router

Hi - For some reason we can't get our e-mail using the wireless router. Internet is working fine - only e-mail is giving an error that it can't get through to the POP3 server or something to that effect. Any idea what could be wrong? We've tried 2 different e-mail accounts and both won't work. Using our regular wired connection we can get right through to the e-mail so it's not the servers. Do we need to change something as far as the server requires authentication being checked or something? Thanks for any help!

    We figured it out.

  • Airdrop using wireless network instead of direct connection

    Hello,
Last night my fiancee and I were moving her backed up music folder from my computer onto her new macbook air '11. My computer is an '11 13" pro. When we were both connected to her wireless network and initiated the airdrop file transfer, it was using the wifi network to send the data which caused the older wrt54g router to max out on bandwidth so the transfer was going really slow (1 MB/s).
Then when I realized the transfer (27 GB) was going to take longer than I was going to be there, I decided to try and get the airdrop to work directly. I eventually had to delete her network from my list of favorites in network settings, turn off wi-fi, and turn it back on. Then once my pro was NOT connected to any networks, I initiated the transfer to her computer, and it was going closer to 10 MB/s. Thus, it was using the true direct connection airdrop is SUPPOSED to use.
Now, nowhere does any of the Apple documentation say "...and then you must disconnect from the wireless network common to the computers..." so I am left wondering if this is some bug or why I had to jump through these hoops in order to get the full transfer potential.
Has anyone else experienced this? And/or does this method work for anyone else?
    Thanks,
    William

  • Using Older Airport Express as an wireless/ethernet bridge

    Hi there,
I noticed that people are using their Airport Express (n) products to create a bridge to wireless networks via the ethernet port on the Express.
Is this possible for older non-N Airport Expresses?
I read online that one could set up a WDS network, but I am having -no- luck doing that. Each time I try, I am prompted to enter other nodes on the WDS network, but there's a chicken and egg problem since the first node I am trying to set up keeps requiring other nodes before applying the changes to the configuration it is very frustrating.
I have an Airport Extreme (b/g) and two airport expresses (b/g) and would very very much like to connect an ethernet-run skype phone to one of the expresses. I currently use one as an AirTunes node, and the other (the one I want to use for the skype ophone) as a wireless printer node. Is it possible to use the latter as an ethernet bridge? Can I do that without setting up a WDS network? If I have to have a WDS network, what are the step by step instructions I should follow to do that for all the hardware listed above?
This seems a lot harder than it should be.

+I noticed that people are using their Airport Express (n) products to create a bridge to wireless networks via the ethernet port on the Express.+
+Is this possible for older non-N Airport Expresses?+
It is only possible with the older Express if you also have an Apple main router and setup all the devices in a WDS arrangement. If you are having difficulty setting up the WDS on your network, reference pages 42-44 in the Designing AirPort Networks Guide for a step by step procedure of this. Or, perhaps you might want to use one of the excellent posts by Tesserax for this as well. See this post.
