Using with a Flip Ultra HD

hey folks, question from a video newbie. I’ve ordered iLife 09, hasn’t arrived yet but it’s coming. Just got a Flip Ultra HD video camera. The purpose is to shoot quick client testimonials for our business and upload them to YouTube. It works great except that the audio volume is too low. Is it possible to import into iMovie and then increase the volume of the clip so it’s easier to hear?
Second question: if this is possible, how much of a pain is it to import the video, adjust the volume, re-save the clip, then upload to YT? The thing that initially appealed to me about the Flip solution was ease of use. If I have to spend 10-15 minutes fussing over every video to get it ready for the web, I'm gonna make a lot less of them than if I can shoot it, spend a couple minutes and then push a button and it’s off.
Trying to get a feel if I can make this solution work or if I need to look for something different. I appreciate any help, thanks.

If you have ios 5.1.1 the output power is 100ma, on the iOS 5.0.1 the power output is 500ma! This may be the cause?

  • Flip Ultra HD

Has anybody used the new Flip Ultra HD with iMovie '09 yet? I'm looking to get one and wondering what people's impressions are.

I use MPEG Streamclip: Export as QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate codec. Set the frame size to 1280x720 to match the Flip HD. Uncompressed 48K audio, 29.97 fps.
Then, in Final Cut, use Easy Setup to change the sequence settings to Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30.

  • Can Flip Ultra 2nd Generation Minicam movies be used in PreE?

I am considering purchasing a Flip Ultra 2nd Generation Minicam (2 hrs) for an upcomng European trip. Does anyone know whether the movies from this camera can be transferred to Premier Elements 4 for combining into a travel movie with still shots and eventually recorded on a DVD? I understand the output is in a MPEG4 format?
Thanks, in advance, for any input provided.

    >use the flip movies for incorporating them into a travel movie DVD
Do make an all the way through test... from camera to DVD... so you aren't suprised about the video quality
Converting from a compressed view format to an edit format... and back to compressed to make a DVD... has built-in quality reduction due to the conversions
But... do it yourself before you go, so you will know if your end result is what you want

  • Flip mino or flip ultra HD to use in imovie and final cut express

i am contemplating either flip mino HD, Flip ultra HD or creative vado HD. Which one has a good video quality and design style? Is it necessary for 2 hrs movie or actually i like the flip mino coz its slimmer but only takes 1 hr video. By the way, What kind of format the flip camcorder will save as coz someone says its .avi but some says Mp4 format? If in Mp4 format, is the quality still good? most of the time i will shoot in ultra hi definition setting. I will use imovie and final cut for edit and does the Flip compatible to imovie and Final cut? How about creative vado? any recommendation?
But most likely i will get the flip.

The Flip cameras are easy to use and pocketable.
Unfortunately it is their very simplicity that drastically limits what they can do.
They are OK for someone who wants to take daft pictures of their friends and post them on YouTube but for serious film-making they are non-starters.
They record low quality highly compressed video onto an internal memory. When you have shot your 60 minutes of video you can’t use the camera any more until you get it to a computer and download it.
The lens is a small aperture fixed focus with no zoom.
Actually to be correct there is a 2x digital zoom, but as we all know, digital zooms are a total waste of time and only reduce the quality still further. You can get the same effect by enlarging your picture 2x in the computer - not to be recommended.
So what at first sight, to the uninitiated looks like a very cheap camera, quickly turns out to be a very expensive toy.
Much better to buy a proper camera (which won't cost all that much more) like Skalicki suggests.

You can't run iMovie 11 on a PPC G5 running the old OS 10.3 Panther - which is what you say you have.

  • MP4 Video from Flip Ultra having Audio Sync Issues

All of sudden I've started having audio sync issues with the mp4 footage exported from the The Flip Ultra camera. Ive tryed the mp4 footage in both windows 7 and Mac OS X and i'm having the same audio issue but when I watch in the flip software or in iMovie no issues. Any know why this has just started happening?

  • Flip Ultra video, Mino HD, or Kodak Zi6 camera

I am interested in purchasing either a Flip Ultra Video, Flip Mino HD or a Kodak Zi6 video camera. I know the Kodak will hold more video as it will take a SD card. What I want to use one of these cameras for is quick, on the spot videos from kids parties, sport events, quick vacation videos, etc... I want to be able to shoot video, plug it in to the USB, store the video on the mac and be able to burn a disc (easily) when I want to and be able to send them out to family for play on their DVD players. I'm not interested in doing a lot of editing (yet), just point, shoot, plug in and burn. I have been to the electronic stores to play with them and have seen how easy they are to use. Does anyone have opinions or advice on which one will be the best for my more simple needs?

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
I can't speak for the other two models, as I haven't tried them (..though I have tried, and used, the ordinary Flip which shoots in standard-definition 4x3 aspect).
But I use the Flip minoHD occasionally (..whip it out of the pocket, press the switch to start, and then press the big red button to record..) and it's very handy, and the resolution is terrific for such a teeny device.
It has only a 2x zoom, however, and that's a digital zoom; which means that the picture is less sharp (..it's simply magnified..) than normal when it's zoomed.
At its standard, un-zoomed, resolution though, it's a surprisingly good camera.
Just so that you can see how it looks, here's some footage (..the last sixth of this short video..) shot with the FmHD. You may have to wait a little while for this to load, depending on how fast your broadband connection is..

  • Uploading Flip Ultra HD footage

I'd like to purchase a Flip Ultra HD Camcorder (720p, 60 fps) but have read feedback discussing it's incompatibly/trouble with Final Cut pro. Anyone have experience? Will I run into issues?
    Thank you.

A quick search of google revealed this extensive tutorial on using the cam in FCP.

  • ISight v. Flip Ultra HD?

I'm making short video tutorials for use on my Blog and YouTube. My first down and dirty effort was done with the iSight camera in my MBP -- recorded directly into iMovie.
I'm hoping that some of you have had experience with both the iSight and Flip Ultra HD and will be able to tell me whether using the Flip will improve the quality of either the video or the sound.
The Flip has a digital zoom -- and I know iGlasses add's one to iMovie, but in my test run, iGlasses degraded the video in a significant way.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello Stephen J. Herzberg
I use full featured camcorders, so I have never used any of the flip video cams. However, were I considering a flip, here is how I would proceed.
Even if some flip users give you direct answers to your questions, the opinions will be theirs. You might not agree with their conclusions.
Hopefully, some who respond here can offer links to their videos from both _their flips_ and _their iSights_ so you can compare for yourself. However, even if they do show you their videos, you may see different results in the locations or subjects or your own videos. You may want to consider testing flip yourself in the way you plan to use it.
Find a local retailer who will allow you to test the flip model of interest to see if it meets your quality needs before you buy. Make and upload a short test in the store using the floor sample or demonstrator model.
Then, if you have not previously done so, use your MBP to make and upload a short iSight test video in lighting and camera distance approximately similar to that you made on the flip test.
Based on what you say you want to do, it seems to me that the most important quality consideration for your purpose is how the videos will play back over the internet. Once both test videos have "processed" and are available for viewing, you can log into your uploaded tests and view them in the same way your audience will see them. From that, you should be able to decide easily whether the flip is for you.

  • Flip Ultra (non-HD) + FCE

I'm using a MacBook Pro, and I'm thinking about getting the 4GB Flip Ultra (non-HD). I'm curious if I'll be able to edit my video from my video camera with FCE, and will it be relatively easy to use?
    Message was edited by: Ehkiru

Correct. The camera uses a delivery codec, not and editing codec.
You will have to transcode to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) and bring the AIC file to FCE.
Bear in mind there a few codecs using AIC, the FCE Easy Setup that matches the incoming files needs to be selected before import.
    This may help:

Maybe a forum search on "Windows registry" would turn up some useful things. You're not the first to ask this. You might save yourself and everyone else some time if you'd simply do that.

  • Switching to AT&T Cingular - best phone for use with Mac and iSync

    Dear Friends,
I am finally about to be free from Sprint's poor customer service. I will be switching to AT&T / Cingular. (Not quite ready to buy an iPhone, but don't want to be locked into a 2 year contract with another provider).
I want to use Apple's iSync. I have reviewed the list of compatible devices and scanned the forums for related topics.
    I'm still left wondering:
What is the best phone to get with AT&T for use with iSync?
I would like to sync contacts both ways. If possible, syncing cal events and to-dos would be nice, but not as important as contacts.
I prefer small flip phones. I don't plan to buy the Media pack service that includes text, web, etc. Instead, I will use the phone for calls and occassional text messages.
Sound quality and the ease of use are the most important features for me. I prefer raised keys to the flat keypads, but could give on this if need be.
Finally, using the phone as a modem with my laptop would be nice, but is not essential.
Thanks so much for any help you can offer.
    David

I am facing the exact same question regarding, e.g., the Nokia 6126. There are several references:
    1. Go to the Nova Media web site and look at their new product, Fone Link. Or their iSynch Plugins
    2. One of the forum threads references, http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060915154526806
    3. Another link I found http://soapbox.co.nz/past/2007/4/9/nokia-6126-and-isync-revisited/
But what I don't yet understand is whether or not any of these suggestions/solutions are affected by the carrier. My understanding is that the 6126 is the North America Version of the 6131. But I talked to ATT/Cingular support yesterday and they make some modifications to the phone software. They don't know if the ATT 6126 will synch with a Mac. Of course they know the answer if synching with a PC (!!)

Are all seagates compatible these days.
I was looking at a ultra ata100 hard disk. Will this disk connect automatically to the enclosure or will additional cables be required
Is the Ice Cube Generation II Ide enclosure ok to use.
    Appreciate any help given
    dual 1 gig G4, Intel 24" Imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi-
The Ice Cube uses an Oxford chipset, (part of the external housings onboard controller) so it should be fine. The Oxford chipset has been shown to give the best compatibility and performance, thus being an desirable feature.
    http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2307.htm
Using a Seagate Ultra ATA 100 drive should give you good, quiet, reliable service. There are no problems with the Seagate ATA drives.
Using the drive and housing with firewire will give you the best results, and firewire will allow you to use a bootable backup on the external drive, should the need be.
The housing comes with all the necessary cables to connect and use your external drive.
Insert the hard drive into the housing, connect the power and the firewire, format the hard drive, and you are ready to go..........
