Using with eMac

I have an eMac with USB 1.1, which i believe can't be updated to 2.0. At the moment I have a 3rd gen iPod which connects via Firewire and it all works fine. I'm considering upgrading to a new iPod, for the capacity, but I was wondering whether anyone has experience of using the new iPod with USB 1.1? Will it just be a case of taking a very long time to put 50GB onto it, but after that it will just be a minor annoyance when i put small amounts of new stuff on it each time I update it? Or is it basically not worth getting a new iPod if you haven't got USB 2.0?

USB2 is 480Mbps and USB1 is 12Mbps. These are BITS per second figures. The rates for BYTES per second are 48MBps and 1.2MBps, respectively. My math says 17 minutes for 50GB with USB2 and a really really long time with USB1.

I have an emac (OS9) and a mac mini(OSX). I'd like to use the emac as a monitor for the mac mini. Is it possible? How? (Both are G4, although I don't think that's relevant : I don't want to use them at the same time, only to use the Emac as a "screen")

I happen to know for a fact that you can use the internal screen on an iMac G3 333, and presumably also a 266 and 233. It has a fixed horizontal frequency so it will only display the resolutions that you can choose with it's motherboard installed: 640x480@117Hz, 800x600@95Hz, and 1024x768@75Hz. With DisplayConfigX I was even able to get other resolutions, as long as I stayed within the 60kHz horizontal frequency. If try to set it to any other resolution and refresh rate it will not work, so the best way to test it is to have another screen as your main screen so that you can set the resolutions on the iMac screen from there. I imagine that the screen in the eMac does not have a fixed horizontal frequency, so if you got the pinouts, you could probably get it working. However, I made a custom video cable for a slot loading iMac G3, and I couldn't get it to work.

Keymapping problem when working with emacs and openbox

I have an apple keyboard and I had to do some remapping of the keys to make the mod-4 key the first key to the left of the space bar for when working with Emacs. The below script worked fine when I was using the dwm window manager, but after switching to openbox I have found that instead of swapping keycodes between the option and command keys, only the command key seems to be working since the initial openbox command-space doesn't work when pressing option-space.
One odd thing I noticed, was on the new setup when I click run `showkey` and press the option and command keys I get 56 and 125 respectively, but these keys don't work at all when inserting them into the below script instead of the 64 and 133.
I must admit I created the script below by continually tweaking it until it worked so there could be a much better way of doing it.

1) I have 10.3.9 and need to upgrade to 10.4. A friend just told me I can do it for free via updates but I don't believe him as I can't find it. What's the solution?
2) Is it possible to get wirless net with eMacs? If so, what setting do you use?

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.

I'm using an eMac power cord on an iMac G5 and the screen is a blue tinted color. No true colors are displayed.

I just realized I was using an eMac powercord on my G5 iMac.
Make a difference at all? Does it screw up my computer?

I can't see how that would make a difference. But use the proper power cord for the iMac, if you have it.
To see if this is software or settings related, if you have a way to boot from a different system, such as a Mac OS X installation disk, start up from that other system and see if you still have the "blue tinted color."
If the problem recurs, you should do these two procedures to Reset PRAM and Reset SMU, to see if there is any improvement

When you do the Reset SMU procedure, if you have been connecting the power cord to an old or over-crowded power strip (surge suppressor), try connecting it to a wall outlet by itself, to see if that makes any difference.
If that does not help, there may be a hardware-related problem.

Shell Scripts: "Open [ALL] With" Emacs

Hi All,
I'm trying to figure out a way to open ALL shell scripts (for which I use the extension ".sh") with emacs (launched in the terminal) by default.
I've made some progress towards this goal, but am stuck on the last step. Here's what I've done:
[1] I copied an Apple Script (from here: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20031027142625782) to create an Application (which I've called "Emacs_open_with.app"), that when launched with a file, will open it in emacs in the terminal.
[2] I can make Emacs_open_with.app the default launch app for a individual shell script by right-clicking -> Open With -> Other... -> Emacs_open_with.app (+ check the box "Always Open With). However, doing this will only make it the default app for that single shell script, not for all of them, as I desire.
[3] Normally, one can associate an application with a file extension, such that any file with that extension will be launched by default by this associated application, by: Right-clicking a file -> Get Info -> Open With -> Other... -> [DESIRED APP] (+ check the box "Always Open With) -> Change All... -> Click Continue when the pop-up appears which asks "Are you sure you want to change all similar documents to open with the application...". However, this does NOT work for Emacs_open_with.app; as soon as I click continue, the drop-down menu which I had used to select "Emacs_open_with.app" changes back to another, different Application.
Any idea about how best to tackle this problem? Thanks for your help!

Wireless keyboard and mouse with emac

Hi,
Does anyone know whether the new wireless keyboard and mouse will work with eMac without built in bluetooth, and USB 1.0?
Should I use a USB 2.0 dongle or a USB 1.0 dongle.

That is how I use my macbook. When I start up in the moring, I turn the mouse, keyboard and monitor on first, I then hit the power button on the macbook and immediately close the lid. The macbook will then boot up on the external display. Just in case you allow the macbook to go to sleep, you need to go to allow bluetooth devices to wake the computer. You set this in the bluetooth system prefs.

trash to clean out and it took her over an hour to expel. Also for some reason Safari will not allow me to click on a link, in my G-mail, and let it go to the page.
It has a sign saying a pop-up blocker is on and will not let me do it. I must open the stamp to look at my e-mails and if I have redirected link now I can do it.
I have not changed my preferences so where is this pop-up blocker?
I have looked at preferences on Safari and Google, which I do not understand Google, and do not see where this blocker could be.
Malware is something I want to make sure is not on my computer. Tech Tool Pro 6 is all I know of and it does not detect Malware.

This code i used with Ruby on Rail to connect with MySQL.
When i used with FireFox browse after i create new user
success it refresh the new record in Datagrid. But for the Internet

If you restrict the selection, a record value outside of that selection is not acceptable and will give you this error. This is how BPS works.
You need to restrict on some other char so BASIC1 doesn't come in, but this value should be part of any selection on ZSEGMENT field for it to be accepted back.

Had the same issue with my Nissan Rogue 2011.
This listed below will fix it...
Go to General > Restrictions > CarPlay -- Make sure Carplay is DISABLED. (The new IOS 8 enables this on default)
Go to General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
The Nissan Rogue radio system was never designed to work with CarPlay. By default, CarPlay feature comes enabled when you install IOS 8. Suckz, right?

Inland external usp mouse malfunctioning when used with HP Pavilion dv6-2155dx laptop.

I have a external usb mouse I have been using with my HP laptop for over two years now and it has always worked without a problem. This week it suddenly stopped working properly. Often it does not work when I click on it even after several tries. Due to disability with hands it is too hard to use the pointer on the pad on my laptop. I need to use a mouse.
I am not sure if it is a bug from a recent software update or an issue with my snyaptics program (which is what I suspect). I am older and my computer knowledge is not so good anymore.
What can I do to diagnose to see where the problem is. I cannot afford to take my laptop in for service right now.

I understand that your mouse is not working properly. Here is a document onTroubleshooting Mouse Problems (Windows 7, Vista, XP). Have you tried a different usb mouse? Have you tried it in a different USB port?
It is not the synaptics program as that has to do with Touchpads, not the mouse. If you believe it was an update, you may be able to do a system restore back to when it was working correctly. You could try running MS Fix It to help resolve issues and look for updates. You should also run the HP Support Assistant to aid with updates and resolve issues. Please let me know how it turns out.

How do I format my external HD to use with iMac?

I have an external HD by Maxtor that I have used with a Windows computer. I am changing to iMac and want to use the same drive. I have transferred the files on it to my iMac successfully. But now I can't clean up the drive because everything is "read only". I read in Maxtor support how to format the drive but it was directions for Mac OS 9 and I couldn't figure it out.

Additionally, you need to be aware of OS X file system formats and partition mapping schemes are two different things.
OS X requires the Mac OS Extended (HFS+) file system formatting—applies to both PPCs and ICBMs (Intel-chip-base Macs). Details on file system formats are in <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Performance/Conceptual/FileSystem/Art icles/MacOSXAndFiles.html>.
PPCs require the ApplePartition Map scheme and the ICBMs the GUID Partition Table scheme. Details on partition mapping schemes are in <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/universalbinary/universal_binary_tips/chapter_5_section10.html>.
So, for your situation, in addition to Mr. Clifton's advice, you need to select the GUID partition map scheme.

i didn't read a lot of your 2nd paragraph, but it seems like the password is the issue, right?
do a true clean install
reboot your machine and hold down command+option+r, you should see a spinning globe - if you don't see the globe or anything that reads internet recovery, shut down and try again
at menu, chose disk utility and once there, find your HD on the left side, select the physical name and erase it as mac journaled
exit disk utlity
at menu, choose install OSX
this time, when it asks for a password just hit continue, it will let you complete without a password
you should be able to get into your laptop, now figure out what password you'll be able to use with your kb issue

Ok, you should generally only get this when you are converting your ID to an iTS account for the first time.
Sign into iTunes with your Apple ID and you should get this.... IRC once you agree or accept it's now an iTS account and you wont get that again.
