Using with external HD

A basic question- Where can you keep your imported movie files?
Can an external HD be used? (I hope so!!) If so, can multiple computers access those files?
Do the files being worked on for eventual iMovei creating, need to be on the computer athe time?
Where is the final product file creted?
With the use of external HD, the issue of where things can be worked on, stored, and burned from is a tricky one for me.
Thanks

I know you're right about something being fishy--it doesn't make sense to me not being able to use some effects just because the projects are saved to the ext HD.
Yes, my ext. hd is hooked up via firewire. Is that a problem?
I don't know if the drive is formatted for Mac OS Extended. Can you explain more on checking it with Disk Utility? I'm new to these things! (I am a previous PC owner--though the HD was never used with my PC.)
If it is NOT formatted correctly, do i have to move the projects off of it and then format it? You're going to have to help me with that too!
Thanks for the help.

  • Time machine on Lion crashes the whole system when used with external HD

    Hi all,
Anybody got the same problem? I did a Time Machine backup just before I did the upgrade to Lion (using an external USB HDD) after the upgrade (that went well in my opinion) when I ask TM to do another backup it stays on "Preparing" indefenately and ultimately crashes the whole system ( reset with ctrl+cmd+power button) is required otherwhise the system stays non reactive.

Start by verifying your internal HD, and repair your backups, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
If that doesn't help, see #D6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a possible way to cancel the backup.  If that works, use the widget in #A1 there to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 USE WITH EXTERNAL DVD BURNER??

    Hello
Looking at buying DVD Studio Pro 4 for my mini but apple have just stated it will not install unless my machine has a superdrive. We've got an external firewire DVD burner and i've read mention of other versions of DVD Studio burning through externals so how come we carnt use DVD Studio Pro 4 with an external DVD burner?
Has anyone tried an external DVD burner with DVD Studio Pro 4 ?
    Cheers

This issue isn't external drives, it's the mini, and installing the program.
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/dvdstudiopro/specs.html
The specs do not seem to require an internal superdrive.

  • Use with external drives

I am yet to use Time Machine, but I wondered if it is able to back up not only from my Mac's internal hard dive, but can I back up from external hard drive to another external hard drive? Or is it only usable with the Macs internal drive?
    Thanks

Yes, TM will, by default, back-up not only your internal HD, but any directly-attached HD/partition it can read, unless you specifically tell it not to, via TM Preferences > Options.
Note that, as a general rule, your TM drive/partition should be 2 to 3 times the size of what it's backing-up, to allow it to keep a reasonable amount of old backups.

  • Best Practice for using with external HD

Greetings, I currently have a fairly large Aperture library, about 210Gb, it's managed by Aperture and on my internal MacBook Pro hard drive.  Not good, I know.  I just received my new MBP with Thunderbolt and also purchased the new Promise Pegasus 12 TB RAID storage device.  My question to the community is this... what is the best way to set up Aperture to take advantage of the external RAID storage while still being able to keep some photos on my hard drive so I can work when away from the Pegasus device.
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

  • Disconnected Use(with external drive)= Corrupted file structure

Help. Really like the way LR handles RAW. Big problem for me is that my Mac Book Pro HD is too full. I'm using an EHD from OWC(FW800). If I launch LR with the drive unmounted LR starts verifying files and pulling all sorts of garbage into the LR Folder panel. If I reconnect the drive there is no repair and only a fraction of the files show up with their terminal folder- the folder structure on the EHD is flattened to useless. Fatal flaw? or my error?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Hi Dan- Happy to try and help. It has happen under 2 scenarios, the lrdb files are at MacHD/users/srp/pictures/LightRoom/...irdb in both cases.
Scenario 1: I had a folder with some duplicates in MAC HD/users/...pictures/My Photos/duplicate files. When I would dismount the EHD and launch LR it would pull the dups on the Mac HD into the DB and reference what looked to be temps for missing files as well with fairly random preview distribution. The EHD file structure is OWC/users/srp/pictures/My Photos/files by date.
Scenario 2: I ditched the duplicate folders on the MAC HD (they were not referenced in LR before disconnect anyway) and launched LR. It initiates checking for files and photos again and pulled random preview references to odd files replacing the original folder structure. In this case there were no valid references to pull so it was mostly garbage, it did preserve a few "?" files.
    Folders Panels: http://aktlr.smugmug.com/gallery/2668872#141260988.
Ive included scenario 1 & 2 grabs and an example of a garbage path
My work around is that I delete the lrdb and replace it with a clean copy, better than re-importing everything.

  • Laptop options for use with PrE 11 (£500 ish)

    Hello,
I'm currently looking to buy a laptop that will allow me to edit various video projects on the move using Premiere Elements 11 (may upgrade at some point). This will serve as my main editing device until I upgrade my desktop, then serve as a portable editing station as I will be at uni next year as well as traveling a lot this year. I do a mix of animation and live action short film work using 1080p footage from my Canon 600D. I am currently looking at the £500 mark, I know it's tough to get a good editing laptop at that price, but I'd rather not spend much more. Currently I have found 3 options, and was wondering if anyone had any advice. The aspects of each laptop I am concerned about are highlighted in red

  • Inland external usp mouse malfunctioning when used with HP Pavilion dv6-2155dx laptop.

I have a external usb mouse I have been using with my HP laptop for over two years now and it has always worked without a problem. This week it suddenly stopped working properly. Often it does not work when I click on it even after several tries. Due to disability with hands it is too hard to use the pointer on the pad on my laptop. I need to use a mouse.
I am not sure if it is a bug from a recent software update or an issue with my snyaptics program (which is what I suspect).  I am older and my computer knowledge is not so good anymore.
What can I do to diagnose to see where the problem is. I cannot afford to take my laptop in for service right now.
    Thanks

    Hi Richard61,
Thank you for your post, I will do my best to assist you.
I understand that your mouse is not working properly.  Here is a document onTroubleshooting Mouse Problems (Windows 7, Vista, XP).  Have you tried a different usb mouse?  Have you tried it in a different USB port?
It is not the synaptics program as that has to do with Touchpads, not the mouse.  If you believe it was an update, you may be able to do a system restore back to when it was working correctly.  You could try running  MS Fix It to help resolve issues and look for updates. You should also run the HP Support Assistant  to aid with updates and resolve issues.  Please let me know how it turns out.

  • How do I use an external hard drive with iMovie 10.0.1? I have run out of disk space on my Macbook Air.

How do I use an external drive with iMovie 10.0.1?  It is not obvious and I have run out of space.

If you want to move a complete iMovie 10 library (file with .imovielibrary extension) click on the library in the libraries pane and select  File - Consolidate Library Media.  This ensures that all media is copied to the library.  You can then move the library onto your external drive using Finder.  The first time to want to access it from iMovie you will have to tell it where it is by choosing  File - Open Library -Other and navigating to it.
If you only want to transfer part of a library to another drive, create a new library a at the desired location  File - Open Library - New  and copy projects and events to it from within iMovie.
Its all described in iMovie help - "Work with multiple libraries".

I have a new Pavilion dm4-301 d cl Entertainment PC.   My OS is Windows 7.   I am used to using two external monitors with a docking station.   This new laptop does not have a docking station.  What do I need to get  to use two external monitors?

    View Solution.

Certainly not without a dock but even with, HP laptop docks pretty well limit you to one of the external monitor ports, even if there are two on the dock. We have used a device called an Atlona AT-HDPIX2 which is a usb to hdmi adapter. It provides a third monitor capability for a laptop....use the native external monitor port and the internal laptop display and then this device gives a third monitor which is full configurable from the Windows 7 display interface...clone, extend, etc. It allows full HD resolution and is responsive enough for even light gaming.  HP makes no true docking station for your laptop.

  • How do I use an external microphone with iPhone Facetime?

Model of iphone doesn't matter to me.  I have an Iphone 4S or Iphone 5 to use.  I am specifically trying to use a wireless microphone set with Facetime so I can get better audio quality at a distance.  Of course, I have a mount for my phone so it's pointed toward me.  Can anyone figure out how I can bypass the internal microphones and use and external?  I have already tried plugging into the jack on the phone, but no luck.
If there is some sort of adapter to plug into the Lightning port or 30pin that might bypass the external mics when using Facetime then I can go with that too.
    Any help is appreciated!

    Hello lizarose,
You might consider recording your video in the QuickTime Player application. The QuickTime Player application will allow you to control input sources for both your video and audio (allowing you to choose the Fast Track for audio and the iSight camera for video).
Once in QuickTime Player, choose 'New Movie Recording' from the File menu. In the resulting window, on the controls bar (near the record button), there will be a small triangle. This triangle will produce a menu allowing you to choose your Fast Track as the desired microphone.
Once the video is recorded and satisfactory, from the File menu, you can choose 'Export To,' then 'iMovie...' After the export process completes, open iMovie (close and re-open if necessary), and you should be prompted to import the video into iMovie. If, for some reason, iMovie is not an option, the video can be exported to the Desktop or the Movies folder (if exporting, choose 'Movie' for Format), then imported into iMovie via the File menu, 'Import,' 'Movies...'
