Using XP , Overheating and restarting

Hi,
I use my Macbook Pro with XP and for awhile everything was good, but lately my mac suddenly shows a bluescreen with alot of text and then restarts. After the restart it does a disc check. My core temperatur is 60-70 degrees celcius when just running windows and doing nothing els. For instace my computer restarted twice while writing this topic and i tried to use InputRemapper to speed up my fans and it seems to have lowered the temperatur by 10 degrees or so but mac continues to crash and restart. Could the sudden restarts and the heat have something to do with eachother? and if so how do i prevent or fix it?
Thank you.

In my experience, different programs will spit out different temp readings, and I'm not sure which (if any) are reliable. For example, I get maybe a 10-15 C difference between Core Temp and SpeedFan, with Core Temp saying my idle temp on XP is usually in the mid-40's, while SpeedFan gives a number in the mid-50's. On OS X I use iStat Pro, and idle temp is supposedly in the low 50's for the CPU, and mid to upper 50's for the GPU. So whether or not your temperatures are okay really depends on whether or not the program you're using is giving you accurate readings.
Temperature issue aside, the fact that your computer is crashing periodically doesn't sound good. Does this only happen on XP, or also on OS X?

Have you tried re-installing the driver and if that fails resetting the printer subsystem? That pictwpstops error is ringing a bell, but I just cannot remember for exactly what. Some sites on the net indicated that it is a font issue. You might try clearing your font cache.
Yes I have reinstalled Driver. and I have reset The printer system. Just wen through fonts the other day with fontbook to verify that fonts were okay.  But did tell it to resolve conflicts.
Just ran AppleJack (I have OSX.4.11) and it cleaned all the fonts Caches unless it doesn't touch acrobat font caches. I let it run through all steps.  Tried after doing this I'll go back and try something and report Back.

  • Sleep, overheating, and restarting issue

I have an iMac G5 with one 1.8 GHz G5 processor. Lately, I have had this problem, and I'm not even sure what to search for on the boards. If someone can point me to an article, I'd greatly appreciate it.
I have my Mac set up as follows: The screen saver turns on after 15 minutes of inactivity. My computer & my display should both go to sleep when the computer has been inactive for 20 minutes.
Lately, my Mac is not going to sleep. Instead, the fans are running very fast, my machine has locked up, and a message on the screen is telling me to power off my computer and restart it.
Is anyone else having this problem, and what exactly is going on?
    Thanks,

  • How can you debug sudden freezes and restarts? Only overheating?

My iMac, under Win XP via Boot Camp, will freeze and restart unpredictably when playing games. I thought I had tracked it down to overheating, but it's not that simple. Is there any error logging at the BIOS level with Boot Camp or any record when it shuts itself off and restarts? I think it must be BIOS and/or hardware, since there are no Windows events that seem to be related. If it was a video or audio driver crash problem, wouldn't I get a BSOD and some sort of error log (since I have automatic restarting turned off in Windows)?
Does anyone know more about when the iMac hardware will trigger a restart due to heat issues? I thought I had solved this by using smcFanControl on the Mac side to bump up the fan speeds and then tracking it with SpeedFan on the Windows side. It worked great for 2 nights. Then the 3rd night, it crashed and restarted right away twice, and then played fine for an hour or more. The 4th night, it crashed and restarted 3 times in a row, within minutes, and we gave up, somehow restraining ourselves from tossing the Mac out the window onto the sidewalk.
According to SpeedFan, the first time it crashed, CPU temps were only at 16C, HD at 37C, and overall at 35C. The second time, CPU temps had gotten up to 25C. The last time, CPU temps again were only at 16C (i.e. it crashed so fast, we hadn't even started playing, so it was effectively idle). Other temps remained pretty constant the whole time.
Given all that, it's hard for me to believe it's a matter of overheating. Yet I have no idea what else it could be, or why upping the cooling seemed to fix the problem for 2 days, and then the next day we were back to square one.
I guess Boot Camp should come with a big sign, only for word processing. What a waste of time - everything else Windows I do in Fusion. The one thing I wanted to bother with Boot Camp for is almost impossible to do, play a simple, not even new or state of the art game. I'm at a total loss what's happening, now that my overheating theory seems to have blown away.

Hi. I just wanted to tell you that I have the exact same problem, only I've got a Mac Pro. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution for you, but I posted details about what I've found here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7217936#7217936.

  • While restarting during for Win10 istallation, pc overheated, and now it shuts off at boot up

Out of nowhere my pc stopped working during start ups. I was installing Windows 10, and when it was restarting to finish the process of installing, my pc overheated. I put my hot computer next to the A/C because it kept on overheating when I tried to turn it back on. After my pc cooled down I turned it back on, and after 70 seconds it just shut off (it had a broken screen so I didn't know what was going on). Please someone help me, my pc won't go to select a OS and I can't see what is going on. HALP

Sudden shutdowns can occcur from the Intel CPU overheating and executing a Thermal Halt, the CPU temperature will confirm this and if the system stays up longer after allowed to set off for hours to cool off but stays on for shorter periods at subsequent reboots then the cause is likely an improperly attached heatsink when you replaced the fan assembly.   I hope you used thermal putty when replacing your fan and apply it properly this time,,,, if you didn't use thermal putty the problem and solution is evident. Either do a better job this time and if you have no idea what thermal putty is then pay someone qualified to reinstall your fan.
Using TPFancontrol or Notebook Hardware Control will report your CPU temp also enabling granular fan control.
I prefer TPFancontrol for its simplicity and accurate temp reporting, use it to monitor your CPU temp to verify your CPU isn't baking and shutting down to preserve itself.
AMD's are notorious for running hot to match Intel speeds and WILL toast themselves more often than Intel.

When I try to open iPhoto I get a window dialog that says...
Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I have tried the reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keyes pressed.
    No change.
I dee nothing but a blank page,
    Any help would be appreciated.
Also hace back ups of all images on cd's. dvds and jump drives.
    Any advice is appreciated.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I put my husband's apple id in when I started to set up icloud in error.  I realized I needed to change this right away and tried to sign out and restart with my own apple id, but it won't let me sign out in the middle of setting up.  It says something about if I don't sync documents, all documents will be deleted from this computer, but I don't want to download all his work documents.  Is there any way for me to start over and fix this?

Having signed out as suggested above, go to http://appleid.apple.com and create a new Apple ID if you don't already have one. You will need a working email address which is different from that in the ID already in use.

I have been using my ipad2 to show video on my flatscreen using the Apple TV.  Recently I find that once I use Apple TV I cannot switch back to the ipad for viewing even if I go back to the little rectangular screen and change the checkmark to ipad.  Once this happens all my videos will only play through apple tv.   If I shut down the ipad and restart it I come up in the ipad mode and can view it on the pad.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Not really sure on this one, but one thought I have is how full is your iPad. Have you connected your iPad to iTunes recently.

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

I have no idea whether there is a causal relationship but since moving to Lion and iCloud, my iMac has become so unresponsive that I wind up having to crash and restart most of the time.  This is true regardless of the app I am using at the time.
The specs of this iMac are:
iMac 27 inch, late 2009 model with a 3.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 Gig 1067 Mhz DDR3, using OSX Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
I have Mackeeper installed and according to the scans I have run, everything is fine. No virus, no junk files . . . no problems at all . . .
Except that for all practical purposes, my computer isn't working.
I am nearly totally deaf and live in an isolated, rural area of NW Missouri and this computer is what I mainly rely on to contact friends, relatives and business associtates!
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

When my Ipod touch is in autolock I can only restart the device holding the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time for 10 seconds.  While in auto-lock it is using battery power and will do so until the battery is drained.  Whats wrong?

    - Try a reset. Nothing is lost:
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Connect the iPod to your computer and try to restore via iTunes. Try placing in Recovery mode if necessary to restore.
    - If you can't turn the iPod completely off, let the batter fully drain. After charging for at lerast anhour try again
    - If still not successful time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Using Acrobat X and creating a PDF File from EXCEL 2010, I notice that the Pagination restarts at 1 for each Worksheet included in the PDF.

I use Acrobat X Standard and created a PDF file from two or more worksheets using EXCEL 2010.
The resulting PDF file restarts the PAGE # (In header/footer settings of Excel) at 1 for each worksheet.
However, a colleague of mine who has Acrobat X Pro version, using EXCEL 2010 and same exact file does the same task, he gets a file that starts at page 1 and second worksheet continues the page # from the last page of the First worksheet.
We both are using the ACROBAT menu (not the print to Adobe printer) to create the file so that we can get Bookmarks included in the resulting file for each worksheet.
We cannot figure out any option in Acrobat's preferences that controls the pagination on either of these versions of Acrobat.
So is this just a feature that works one way in Standard version and another way in the Pro version, and the user has no control over it?

This is so sad. I read your comments and I said, "Huh?" Haha!
I tried the indexed color option and it did make the final file smaller. Around 600KB. But there's probably another way to make it even smaller like the gazillion-paged pdf file that I mentioned that was only about 300KB.
And by saying a layout program, does that mean like Adobe InDesign? Does that mean that I should just make my graphics in Photoshop and then import using another program and finish the file there?
What other layout programs can I use?
    Thank you so much!
