Using Xsan to carry data over dual gigabit ethernet connections?

A designer (mostly non-technical) colleague of mine has claimed that Xsan transfer data (not metadata) over dual gigabit ethernet, in lieu of Fiber Channel, with metadata flowing over a third ethernet. Is this true? Has anyone done an install in this manner? I can't find any reference of this, anywhere.
If anyone can help shed some light on this, I would appreciate it!
Thanks,
Ben

If you're planning on connecting to the SAN in this manner, be aware that the amount of bandwidth is MUCH smaller than fibre channel. (That's why X-SAN used fibre between clients and the SAN)
So... if you're thinking of pulling uncompressed HD through ethernet (even Dual Ethernet) you're going to be woefully disappointed.
Having said that, we regulary connect dozens of "story editors" to our X-SAN via a single gig E "reshared" connection. The secret is that we ONLY use "off-line RT" media for this connection. We've locked out our "Full Res" media from this kind of connection because it will only jam up the system and bring our internal system to it's knees. I would regard this kind of "tapping in" to the SAN as a "secondary" method, not your primary way of accessing the media.
Good luck.

  • Using both Dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports

Using both Dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports
If I plugged both of my ethernet ports into my LAN switch, that would double the bandwidth to and from my machine. A switch does not used shared bandwidth like a hub does. I realize that it won't speed up any of the other devices that are plugged into the switch. Regardless, I would have the capacity for double the bandwidth to my machine.
All LAN cables are CAT6 and the switch is 10/100/1000.
The question is, would Mac OS X 10.4.7 utilize both ports (soft of the way it uses multiple processors)?

It's easy to try... it's call "Link Aggregation"...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304120
You get to it by Network>Show>Network Port Configurations>New then Port in the popup, then you schould see Port Aggregation. Selt the two ports you wish to combine.

  • Usage or advantage of Dual Gigabit Ethernet

Just for my curiosity and knowledge, what is the advantage and usage of having a Dual Gigabit Ethernet behind the Mac Pro?
Any examples? or Articles I can read?
    thank you

You can use the first one for Internet-bound and local traffic, the second for a local File Server.
IF you have a device that explicitly supports the required bonding protocol, you can bond the two links for even faster transfers.
The speed of even a single Gigabit Ethernet link exceeds almost every Internet connection, so the main benefit is in local file transfers (to other computers or servers).

  • Gigabit ethernet connection to existing Airport wifi?

I have a new iMac with a Gigabit ethernet port. If I want to connect it with a gigabit ethernet cable to my 2010 Airport Extreme box, and therefore to my existing wifi network:
    1) How do I determine if the Airport Extreme [802n (4th Generation)] is gigabit ethernet capable? Airport Utility does NOT tell me if it is 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet) or 802.11n (Fast Ethernet).
    2) Will the gigabit ethernet's INTERNET connection be faster on this iMac than on the other wireless-connected devices? In other words, is there a real internet advantage to using gigabit ethernet connection?

Does this mean a Mac on Ethernet can see all devices on an AE wifi network, including a USB printer connected to the AE?
Yes, wireless and wired devices are on the same network. Wireless and Ethernet are two doors that open into the same room.
Does connecting a Mac with gigabit ethernet prevent/replace a wireless connection?
The Mac can connect using either wireless or Ethernet, but not both at once. If you connect an Ethernet cable to the Mac, that connection will become the active connection.....assuming that you are using the Mac's default settings. If you want to use the wireless connection on the Mac, then you will need to physically disconnect the Ethernet cable.
I guess I'm asking about the advantages and disadvantages of connecting a Mac via gigabit ethernet.
Advantages......Faster speeds on your local network between network devices.....no speed loss up to 330 feet or 100 meters......and there are no wireless interference issues in a wire. A wireless signal loses speed the further it gets from the router and with any obstruction that it hits. Other wireless networks around you tend to generate noise that will also slow down your wireless  signal.
Disadvantages....you have to run the Ethernet cable.

I can not see you can control what uses which port, if that would speed up any operations over another.

normally i wouldn't just send someone straight to wikipedia but the answer to what virtualization is or does is way too much for me to sum up in a few sentences.   the most basic principle is that it's a virtual installation of an OS installed in its own memory space.   it saves from having to set up a physical installation and running a multiboot setup.

networking directly into your ThinkStation is as simple as setting up shares and accessing them via an ethernet cable.   you'd end up with a dedicated gigabit connection between two systems.   search google for "networking two computers" and you'll find a host of guides.   if you're using new enough hardware, a standard patch cable will work in lieu of a crossover cable.   modern systems have autosensing ports and don't need crossovers.   older systems, however, will.

  • Is there a way you can stop Apps using 3G or 4G data whilst your devices is connected via WIFI?

Is there a way you can stop Apps using cellular data, but allow them to use data only through a WIFI connection?
I have tried leaving the cellular data switch on, but switching OFF "Use Cellular Data for" for all apps.  But on checking the data usage from my phone provider these Apps have still been using cellular network to download data.
It seems even though my phone is connected to the WIFI (and showing a good signal) some apps are still using the cellular network to download data.
It seems my only option is to switch Cellular data off all together but this is not my preference as I require a particular app to still be able to use cellular data in the case of an emergency.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks that's very helpful.
It shows up on my bill for example "You Tube", with the times and amount downloaded.  I know for a fact I have not been using this app at the times shown. It must be processing some information in the background, of which I have also switched off "Background App Refresh".
Sounds like a programming change required by Apple.  Surely if you switch cellular data off for a particular app that should override this from happening whether the phone's in sleep mode or not......
Any idea how I take this issue up with Apple?

  • Gigabit Ethernet connection

Is the only current option for an Ethernet connection for a MacAir the USB adaptor? I've seen where the Sonnet thunderbolt adaptor will be coming but I can't find it for purchase. I'll be using my MAP mainly connected to a hard line and fear it's going to be too slow. The laptop isn't an option due to travel.

The Sonnet Thunderbolt Adapter is not available yet.
But unless you have a really super speed internet connection or are doing a lot of machine to machine transfers then the gigabit over 10/100 speed of the Apple USB adapter.
The Apple Adapter is rated as 10/100 Mbps. The USB 2.0 port itself is rated at 480Mbps though it has a lot of overhead. Both of these should be faster than your ISP connection unless you are very lucky.
802.11g WiFi speeds should be comparable to the USB Ethernet speed.
802.11n WiFi speeds could be faster to the USB Ethernet speed.
Again, both of these should be faster than your ISP connection unless you are very lucky.
The 10/100 Mbps speed from a practical standpoint will only make a visible difference for machine to machine transfers where the other devices are 10/100/1000 Mbps capable.

  • Dropping Gigabit Ethernet connection

    Hello,
I found out a strange issue on my mac mini 2011 with Gigabit Ethernet port and what I see that it is works on automatic mode, in 100 mbit speed, but today I bought cisko 1 gbit switch and I still see in network utility 100 mbit. If I force the 1 gbit speed in seeting I will get error message like cable was unplugged.
Don't tell me that I have broken logic board. My varanty finished 2 months ago.
    Thank you.

    OK ****! - was I wrong...
After the above entry I packed up my MacBook, headed out to the Mac store and dropped it for repair; they had it overnight. "The Genius" called me to pick it up the next day. The answer:
There's nothing wrong with your MacBook. They copied files back and fourth between my MacBook and many other hosts on their network; it performed as expected.
I gave him a short history of the problem, and he said, "OOOOOooohhh, it's the Belkin." I brought my baby home, did a little research, found that others had a similar problem and found an acceptable fix. I ordered the new switches, a 5-port for my desk and an 8-port for the servers in the back room; incidentally, these items were inexpensive.
I swapped out the Belkin F4G0500 for the TrendNet TEG-S50g and everything started popping:
The MacBook received (and retained) a DHCP lease
Files copied between the Mac and other hosts at gigabit speeds
I should say the rest of my gear, 3 Linux Servers, a Linux Desktop/Laptop, and printer all made use of the Belkin at gigabit speeds (100MB file between Host A <--> Host B in 2 seconds), it was only the Mac that had trouble with the Belkins.
I split this evenly between Belkin and Apple as a responsibility to fix for we the buyers. It's 2012, we should have layer 3 (switching) sorted out by now. This was minor but pricey pain in the ***.
    Troubleshooting Techniques:
Create Files of a Specific Size
You can use the "dd" (Unix) program to create files of a specific size. To test gigabit speeds, specific file sizes take the guessing out of the equation.
    Open the Terminal (Utilities directory)
To create test files, enter both of the following lines (line one, then line two, giving each time to finish):
    dd if=/dev/zero of=~/Desktop/output_100MB.dat bs=1M count=100   # Creates a 100MB file
    dd if=/dev/zero of=~/Desktop/output_1GB.dat   bs=1M count=1000  # Creates a 1GB   file
The files created in Step 3 will now be on your desktop ready for transfer/testing.
    Quit the Terminal.
    File Transfer Calculator
This calculator will give you an approximation of what transfer times should be; at least it's close enough for me. There will be a little flux due to various (network) conditions, within 2-3 seconds it seems, but generally these estimations should hold.
For my problem, I wanted to test a 100MB & 1GB file transfer between 2 computers (both with Gigabit Network Cards) on the same switch.
EG: for the 2 files, I fill in the calculator:
100MB file: Size: 100; Size Lable: MB; Speed Lable: -none ; Select Speed by interface: Wired Lan Gigabit Ethernet --> click Calculate = estimated 2 seconds.
1GB file: Size: 1; Size Lable: GB; Speed Lable: -none ; Select Speed by interface: Wired Lan Gigabit Ethernet --> click Calculate = estimated 9 seconds.
Verify Gigabit Speeds on the Switch
The Trendnet ports will light up GREEN for each port that is functioning at gigabit (1000 Mbit/s) speeds; ports that are only running at Fast Ethernet speeds (100 Mbit/s) will light up AMBER. Transfers must occur between any 2 computers lit green on the switch.
When I copy the files to another (host) computer I see transfer times for:
The 100MB file is on the money: 100MB   50.0MB/s  00:02 seconds.
    The 1GB file takes a little longer: 1000MB  47.6MB/s  00:21
Here we see approximately 50.0MB/s transfer times for both. The File Transfer Calc estimate was off by 12 seconds but I did notice that the transfer degraded slightly (in speed) the longer it persisted; even though that's true, the MB/s is similar.
If you have a similar setup as me (1 switch under your desk, and 1 in the server room), repeat the transfers to (hosts) computers in the back room with a green light on the switch. The transfers should be similar if not the same.
It's not perfect but it's a week later and I'm almost $200 down; it's close enough for jazz and better than what I had before. I'm tired of screwing with it.
    Cheers all,
    TT

  • How do I extend an existing wireless network with a 2nd time capsule?  I want to tether them with a gigabit ethernet connection.

I am having trouble with extending a wireless network using 2 timecapsules (1 is 1 terrbyte hdd, the other has a 2TB HDD.)  The first one is connected to the WAN (cable modem) and our LAN.  I would like to connect the 2nd one to the ethernet LAN and have it 'rebroadcast' the 1st ones wireless n network in order to expand the overall range of the network.  Your help is very much appreciated.

Suggest that you download and install the much more useful AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion.
I assume that Time Capsule 1 is operating correctly at this time.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6
Select Time Capsule 1 and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons and make a note of each of the setttings on this Wireless page.
Make sure that the Ethernet cable is connected to the WAN "O" port on Time Capsule 2.
Open up AirPort Utility and select Time Capsule 2 and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons and enter the exact same settings that you wrote down for Time Capsule 1
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
Make sure that the settings look like this:
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update and allow 25-30 seconds for Time Capsule 2 to restart to a green light
Very important......perform a power cycle of the entire network as follows:
Power off every device in any order that you wish
    Wait a minute
Power up the modem and let it run for minute by itself
Power up Time Capsule 1 the same way
Power up Time Capsule 2 the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time the same way until the entire network is back up

  • Automatic switch over from wired ethernet connection to wireless (different internet networks)

I have an Imac connect to 2 different internet service providers 1) a wired connection via ethernet giving a 10mbps download speed but unfortunatley the signal can randomly drop for a period of seconds, minutes or even hours, which I then have to manually disable the ethernet connection and switch to the wireless provider, a tedious task..
I was wondering if there is a way whereby i can set the ethernet conection to automically switch to the wireless connection during the periods explained above?
    Thanks for your assictance.
    David

    OK, thanks for the update.
Let's try to figure out which device is actually providing the PPPoE service. It will be either your modem or the AirPort Extreme router.
Normally, the PPPoE connection service is established on the modem by using a web page for configuration. If you have setup the PPPoE service this way, then the AirPort Extreme must be set to Connect Using -- Ethernet.
Please use your computer to check some settings as follows:
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup > Click the Internet icon
Look for the Connect Using setting near the top of the page
It will be set to either "Ethernet" or "PPPoE"
    Which setting do you see?
Note...if you are still using OS 10.4.x as you indicate, this may not be the path to find the setup information. It may be in an older application on your computer called AirPort Admin Utility.
Sorry, I can't remember much about 10.4.x, so you may need to look around a bit on your computer.

  • IP over Firewire AND Ethernet  connected cluster?

Does anyone have any experience with IP over Firewire and Qmaster? What I'm trying to do (for now) is to have a file server connected to a bunch of Firewire HD's, then that connected to two other macs via IP over Firewire, and all that be a cluster.
The file server is the controller. Or I want it to be at least. Connected to this cluster are two workstations, connected to the file server via Ethernet.
So it's File Server with several external Firewire HD's connected to it with the video data. Connected to this file server are two macs via IP over Firewire which will be services only nodes. Connected to ALL of this over ethernet are two editing workstations. Qadmin can't seem to see the two mac nodes connected via IP over Firewire.
The problem is that Qadminstrator can't see the two macs connected to the file server via IP over Firewire. I'm wondering if for some reason data can't go from Ethernet to IP over Firewire and back again.
Any tips or suggestions? I'm just about out of ideas for now.

I was also NOT ABLE to use both nodes connected in a MIX of ETHERNET and FIREWIREover IP.
I WAS able to get a 4 x NODE cluster working using SHAKE & COMPRESSOR/QMASTER using all GbE EThernet - I went out and bought a cheap 8 x PORT ethernet GbE hub and all my problems went away.
HEre's what I had initially and what I did and it DIDN'T work consistently..:
    Hardware Initially:
    • g5 QUAD and 2 x MBP Dual Core 15's + 1 x MBPDC 17inch.
    • G5 QUAD GBE1 connected to #1 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable
    • G5 QUAD GBE2 connected to #2 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable
    • G5 QUAD FW0 connected to 1 x MBPDC 17 on its FW1 with 6 pin FW cable
    • G5 QUAD is set as CONTROLLER+SERVICES
    • MBPDC's are all SERVICES ONLY.
    • thus 3 x SUBNETS
    SETUP#1- problem symptoms
    • via QMASTERADMIN - G5 CONTROLLER could see MBPDC 17 and ONE of the MBP15;s but not all of them.
•tries various configs on each FW and EN0 for boths FW and EN paths.. never consistent view..
    • removed some FW disks from FW400 path that were attached to CONTROLLER G5 host ... could then see ALL as a MIX of THERNET and FW. (Same happens using FW800 - although avoided this because of sperious DISK issues wth external FW800 disks on G5 QUAD).
    • created cluster (not a quick cluster)- sent simple long I-FRAME based DV-PAL to smaller DVPAL) codec test to compressor and set the CLUSTER to the QMASTER on I defined.
    • set QMASTER controller sys pref to use ALL NETWORK PATHS and disbaled the AIRPORT subnets on each MACHINE)
    • PROBLEM was only G5(controller+services) and TWO of the services nodes (MBPDC's) were processing - NEVER all three! It didn't seem to matter what IP path was onnected (EN or FW).
    • - all the above was a NO go waster of time. (aggh)
    so..
HARDWARE SET UP #2 and what worked first time!
    • purchased 1 x GBE Ethernet hub (8xport) w/P/supply and four 1m ethernet cables
    • g5 QUAD and 2 x MBP Dual Core 15's + 1 x MBPDC 17inch.
    • G5 QUAD GBE1 connected to GBE HUB
    • #1 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable to GBE HUB
    • #2 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable to GBE HUB
    • #1 x MBPDC 17 on its EN0 with cable to GBE HUB
    • G5 QUAD is set as CONTROLLER+SERVICES
    • MBPDC's are all SERVICES ONLY.
    • thus 1 x SUBNET....!
    WORKS EVERY TIME First time
    • all machines work to render or transcode.
    • for SHAKE RENDERING, each CPU has a process.. so there seems to be as many as (4 x 1)+2 + 2 + 2 rendering processes at any one time.
    • less for COMPRESSOR as one per HOST (4 in my case)
    Also.. in QMASTERADMIN - always:
    • have the SOURCE and TAGET disk volumes|directories ou need MOUNTED (NFS works for me) and
    • set to NEVER COPY.
    • set QMASTER sys prefs/Advanced/"USe NEtwork Interface = EN0 (or whatever one you want to use. 'd imagine that a FW hub would also do the job (IPoFW).... but for me I had all free ETHERNETs NICS so I used them.
    • oh .. enable all your airports NICS.. .. in the above QMASTER wont use this subnet.
This speeds the WORKFLOW up enormously because the source material does not have to be COPIED to each host (well I think that what it means).
So the solution in my case was to have ALL the HOSTS on a SINGLE subnet..
    works for me.
    hope that helps

  • Dual Boot - Ethernet Connection fine in OS 9.2, Gone in OS X 10.2.x

I just bought a G4 (Digital Audio Model), and have had the strangest luck. When I originally got the machine, Internet worked fine (via PCI Card by LanTek) in both 10.2 and in 9.2 boots. After upgrading to 10.2.8, Ethernet card was suddenly greyed out in Network Preferences, no Internet, but everything was still ok in the 9.2 boot. After researching, I found out that there were some problems with 10.2.8, so I rolled back to 10.2 (even after erasing the OSX partition and startig from scratch). Still no Ethernet! Neither the PCI Card nor the Built-in Ethernet works... Even more frustrating because it worked at one time, AND it still works in the 9.2 OS. Any suggestions? Anyone?!

  • HELP: Can't Get G5 Quad to Share Internet of Dual Gigabit Interface

I just got (yesterday) a G5 Quad with the dual Gigabit ethernet connections and I am trying to share my network connection through the Quad (no more ports available on my switch).
    - I am connecting the Quad (en0) directly to a Gigabit Switch and get ip 192.168.2.191
    - I connect a G4 Dual 500 to the Quad (en1).
In Network utility, the Quad on en1 and the G4 show ip 192.168.2.1 (which is the IP of my router)
When I try to connect to the internet via the G4, Safari just sits there. No error page, just the spinning lollypop.
When I connect the G4 directly to the switch, instant access.
My settings on the Quad are as follows:
    Sharing/Services:
Personal File Sharing, Personal Web Sharing checked, all others not checked.
    Sharing/Internet:
Share your computer connection from: Built-in Ethernet 1
    To computes using: Built-in Ethernet 1 not checked, Built-in Ethernet 2 checked;
Unfortunately, I have no available spots on the switch, and was hoping I could use the secondary port on the Quad to File/web share one more Mac.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Maximum HD installation in G4 450 Dual (Gigabit)

Is it possible to install more than 1 extra internal HD in the G4 450 Dual (Gigabit ethernet) model? I already have a 40 GB internal ATA drive installed, in addition to the main HD that came with the computer. I would like to install another 300 GB internal drive, for a total of 3 drives. Is this possible?
I know I would have to upgrade my OS to 10.2 and up to take advantage of the full capacity of the 300 GB drive. But I'm not even sure there is another place to install this drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Brett

You need a 3rd party PCI ATA-133 or SATA card to run any additional (or larger than 120GB, I believe) HDD's. You can install 4 drives in total; two stacked in the back, and one each in the middle & front slots. With the PCI card, each additional HDD can be Master on it's own bus (faster), since the cards all have two ports.
Sonnet is one manufacturer, ACARD another
xlr8yourmac.com is one source of info on a variety of controllers.
The original owners manual diagrams how to install extra drives, or you can look at Apple's customer installable parts links (you can see the two additional trays in the pics, they don't show them being used)(or a number of 3rd party online guides, just google it).

  • Can you use Airport for internet and Gigabit Ethernet for file sharing?

i would like to complicate my network setup by using my Airport connection to the internet for internet access and then use the Gigabit Ethernet connection between my G5 tower and the MacBook Pro for file sharing, Compressor's distributed rendering, and possibly iTunes music/video sharing for Front Row.
is this possible? could i just run a cat 6 cable between the two and network them together? or do i need to get a Gigabit Switch?
i suppose i could just try running the cable between them and see what happens. i don't think these new machines require cross-over cables since the ethernet ports auto-detect that now, but is a cat 5e or cat 6 cable required for Gigabit speed?
    thanks,
    scott

Yes it would work. The Ethernet network would be used for local file transfers and the Airport for internet. However you will need to make sure Ethernet is at the top of the list of network ports in the Network Preferences.
