Using Zen Touch as external hardd

Hi there,
I just wanna know, if it is possible to use the zen touch mp3 player as an external harddisc. I wanna connect it to the computer and then just drag and drop songs on the dri've. Normally it is not possible, but I heard about a firmware update that can make it possible. Now, is it true or not?
Thank you!

If you are asking this because you are considering on buying it then look else where, it totally sucks as an external hard dri've. You have to install the drivers everywhere you plan to use the player and also install the nomad explorer to be able to transfer data to it. On tops of that the nomad explorer is not bug free, including one bug which erases the file extension if the file name has more than one '.' in it. If you have a file called maria.full.of.grace.avi and one called maria.full.of.grace.mp3 both will be copied as maria.full.of.grace in the player. This is a problem when you have multiple file in a folder with relati've the same name and try to copy that folder.
A firmware with MTP support was promise to be release before you died, but when exactly before you do no one does and wouldn't base buying the player on this promise. MTP would allow you to transfer mp3's a files to your Zen Touch without having to install drivers for it, but still you will need to have Windows Media Player 0 or above to enable MTP on your computer, so if you go to someone's computer and it doesn't have wmp0 you will need to install it, requirring WMP0 also means that it won't work on win2000 since wmp0 is not supported in win2000.Message Edited by lsd_us3r on 07-0-2005 09:24 PM

  • Use zen touch as portable data stor

    Hi all
Can I use zen touch as a portable data storage?
I use shared computers in school and installing Zen Media
    Explorer is not possible.
Is it possible to reslove this problem by fireware update or it is related to hardware capabalities of zen touch?
    thanks

Data storage is a must have, I mean thats like include driverless support for the iPod Mini, but not including them on the iPod 20GB?
I understand that if they do include it the Zen Micro won't sell, but then Creative should have adjusted the pricing on the Micro.
I love the Zen Touch, but I must saying now that I understand that data transfer's are nearly impossible (Other computer must have same drivers) it's kind of a negati've point.
I think Creative needs to keep the Zen Touch (20GB) at about $225 and if they were to drop the micro to $75 in the future then they would still sell.
2GB of storage for the micro, please. When a player has a potential of 20Gb or 40Gb thats when you need storage options.
Creative you did a great job on the Zen Touch, and you need to add on to it, not the micro.
Keep the focus on the stylish, feature loaded, high storage players and the company will go a long way.
This is troubling that this is not even being considered to be included, I hope Creative Labs thinks through this...

  • Using iPod touch as External Storage/Memory

    Hi,
I have an iPod touch 2nd generation and would like to use it as an external memory (sort of a memory stick). Is this possible? Prior to this i had Creative Zen Vision W and it perfectly did this however I cant manage to do this with my ipod.
    Help would be appreciated
    Thanks

yup, this is a huge disappointment. I just got a gen 3 32gb touch with the intent to use it as a external drive (this was an important feature to me as a digital media student).
This is something apple should be making consumers aware of before buying as it's such a common and expected 'feature' of media players at this expense.
going straight back to the shop.

  • Listening to Zen Touch via external devi

    Hi fellow Creative users,
since this is my first post, please excuse if this is the wrong forum to post my question on.
I have recently bought a Zen Touch 20G and am very happy with it. A couple of glitches here and there, nothing that resetting couldnt fix.
So here is my question: When i try to connect my CZ to a stereo, i cant get any sound out of the speakers. The music is playing, i can see it on the screen, all cables are connected properly, the volume is set on highest - and still nothing.
I have also tried to play it through my tv (Loewe, about 3 years old). Now this works, but the tv does not seem to recognise the player as a connected device, and since it has an auto shut-off when no broadcast function, it dutifully switches itself off every 5 min or so.
The only solution is to play it via FM transmitter, which i understand would not deli'ver the same quality sound as a cable connection would.
    any ideas/suggestions anyone?
    thanks in advance!

I dont know if your car has a cassette player or not, but in my car I just use a cassette adapter: just plug the jack into the player and stick the cassette in. As for connecting it to a stereo and such, I simply use an RCA jack to /4 in. jack.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...onics&n=507846 I have found this device to be of high quality, and it has never failed me. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...03-2285-304247 and this is the cable for stereos and such. If you havent tried this already, then I hope this is helpful. Good luck..Message Edited by clousewa on 02-03-2005 05:5 AM

  • Zen Touch CD lost, can't use zen touch on

I lost my CD with the software for my mp3 zen touch, so I don't have mediasource.
My question is: how can I transfer music between my mp3 en my pc without the software?
I know you can download nomad explorer but if you want to use nomad explor you have to install the software first.
    Who can help me?
    Kasumi

The problem is that I have nothing of the software installed and you've to install first the software from the cd before you can download en install something from the site. When I try to install mediasource or nomad explorer from the internet my pc says that there is no previous version installed.
So I don't know what I have to do.
    Who helps me out?

  • Is there any way to use zen touch without being an admin on the comput

I looked for weeks and weeks with no solution. All I want is the simple
interaction between my 20GB zen touch and a pc with which I have
no admin priviliges. If I managed to get the files (nomad explorer/driver)
somewhere else would simply copying them over be enough to get it to work.
Or is it hopeless and you HAVE to be an admin? :smileysurprised:
Please helpMessage Edited by myname on 05-24-2005 03:8 PM

It works fine on my laptop but you know the way it is at work.
I thought I'd be able to download files and bring them home
to my laptop on the zen touch. ?260, 20GB and I can't even use
it to transfer files. Feck that :smileyvery-happy:

  • Zen Touch, WinXP detecting as

I reformatted my computer today, so I have a totally fresh (and up to date) install of windows XP. I *did* have? WMP installed, but that was causing Windows to recognise my Zen as a MTP device or something, which didn't work. So I used the tutorial that's stickied at the top of this forum to remove WMP and that driver feature pack or whatever it was. So this is my situation at the moment;?When I plug my Zen Touch into my computer though, it says it's detected a "Creative Zen Touch" and that it should be working fine. So, I start up NOMAD explorer and it tells me my Zen isn't connected, so I unplug/replug it and same again. Windows detects it as a "Creative Zen Touch" and NOMAD won't see it. So I try going to My Computer and that crashes out. The whole window goes blank at that little torch animation plays, the one where a torch rolls backwards and forwards. Needless to say, no matter how long you leave it, that animation keeps going. Trying to close the window only brings up a window saying it's not responding, end now etc.
So I figured it's just something wrong with the drivers that windows found right? So I download the latest and greatest from the Creative site, install them. Same issue.
General info that might be useful;Zen Touch 20GB with latest firmwareWin XP SP2 (without WMP at the moment) - detects Zen as a Creative Zen Touch, but does nothing elseWin XP SP2 (with WMP) - detects Zen as a MTP and doesn't do anything with it (tells me my hardware might not work properly [well duh?!])AMD Athlon?64bit 3700+ (I do have regular 32bit windows though)2GB Dual Channel RAM?Edit: Tried plugging it into another USB port, now it's recognising it as a MTP device again, still don't have WMP installed though.Message Edited by phil88 on 02-3-200707:50 PM

Here's an update on the latest situation;?When I plug in the Zen, windows says it's found a MTP media player and asks if?I want to sync or do nothing. When I choose sync (with WMP0), it opens up WMP to the sync screen and hangs for a while. Eventually (0 minutes ish) it'll chuck up an error saying "WMP does not detect a portable device. Connect your portable device and try again."?When I try to open up My Computer, it does that thing where the window blanks out and there is a little torch icon rolling around. When I try to go to Portable Media Devices in Control Panel, it does the same thing as My Computer, blanks out with a torch.

  • Zen Touch External Disp

A few weeks ago I read the thread about the custom-made remote control for the zen touch. i soldered it together and it works fine!
But whats about an external display? As we know, the creativ remote has a display. I think the signal must be pin 3 or 4. One and two are for the remote (one is probably ground).
Do you think its possible to connect an external display to the zen touch? Has someone already experience or is interested in this project?
I contacted creative an asked for the connectors but they gave me no useable information. Perhaps someone here knows more...

Cause, i mean, any mp3 player iwth more than 20 gigabytes should be able to be used as an external hard dri've, really...
20gb is not that much. A real external hard dri've should be 300-400gb (personal opinion). But i suppose 20gb is enough for a movie or two.

  • Zen Touch no longer uses fold

At some point after an update (not sure if it was firmware or an update to MediaSource as I have applied both in the last 2 months) my 20GB Zen Touch stopped storing music in logical artist/album folders. Instead it stores all music files in the root folder of the player.
I realise the player does not need folders to operate correctly, and that it organises the files by their ID3 tags, BUT...
It has a 20 Gigabyte storage capacity, and so if ALL the files go into a single root folder my poor PC struggles and hangs as it tries to list the files whenever I open up MediaSource. There are way too many files in a single folder for it to run smoothly.
It makes MediaSource almost unusable. Why has this been done, and how do I fix it's

Can you see any files on your Zen Touch using Windows Explorer? I have the latest driver installed on mine (with Windows XP), and all my music is still under "artist" folders under the "Media" folder. I don't use Mediasource. I always found it WAY too slow and clunky to use. I am using WMP now, which seems to work much better than MediaSource to synch music (and now creates playlists). As you know, WMP uses tags like the Zen itself, so you don't see or don't use folder structure. The only downside I've found to totally replacing MediaSource with WMIP is that I can't edit tags on the player itself without Mediasource. So, I just delete them, edit on PC and copy them back.

  • What format should I use for Maxtor  One Touch III external hard drive

I'm not sure if I'm on the right forum section, but hopefully you can help. I just got a Maxtor One Touch III external hard drive with the firewire 400/usb 2.0 port. I installed the cd and followed the manual and it told me to format it. I went to disk utility and went to the "erase" section, but now it wants me to choose the type of format: mac os extended (case-sensitive), mac os journaled, mac os (case-sensitive, journaled) and so on.... Can anyone tell me what those formats mean/do, and what is the best one to use? Thanks!

Case sensitive is really if you are using some old UNIX programs that you have brought the source over to OS X and compiled them. And the UNIX programs have to expect a case-sensitive file system.
I'm betting this isn't the case... or you'd know what a case sensitive file system is.
    So go with HFS+ Journaled

  • Can i use my Creative Zen Touch with my Xbox 360

Hello, wondering if you can help me out with the question above, and if you know how to make it work. If you could help me i'd be grateful.

You can use the Zen Touch with the Xbox 360, but you would have to update the firmware on the player to an MTP (2.x) firmware. This will slightly change the way the player works on the PC. For more information on MTP, check this knowledgebase article.

  • Help using my zen touch to use as a mass storage device

Hello all I have a zen touch DAP-HD004
Does anyoe know of a way to use this as a mass storage device not just for audio media files,
any help would be greatly apreciated
    thanks
    paul roy

Okay, usb_modeswitch works fine.  There is one odd quirk though...  Arch is set up so that it loads XBMC by default (I'm using this as a media PC).  On my old wifi adapter, which does not need modeswitch, the weather and news on XBMC update immediatly when it is started.  With this wifi adapter they do not update at all.  I can tolerate this though, but if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this I'd appreciate it.  Thanks!

  • Zen Touch use without admin rig

    hey everyone,
I'm a proud owner of a zen touch 20GB and have been very satified with it. I'm a high school student and have been lucky enough to li've in a place where the school provides each student with a high end dell laptop. For the year before I got my zen, I managed about 000 or so songs with WMP on my laptop. I don't have admin priviledges as it is a school computer, but I can take it home and whatever so it's as good as mine. When I got my zen I couldn't install the drivers and/or programs for transfer so I had to send all my files over to the home computer via the wireless network, quite a pain.
MY QUESTIONS IS: does anyone know of a way to install Nomad Explorer and/or the drivers for the Zen or somehow get the Zen to work with the school computers? They all have XP Pro SP and WMP0.
Any response would be appreciated seeings as it takes about a half hour to get songs onto it now and having it work with my laptop would be much easier. I'm an avid computer user and can program my way to it if I need to but there has to be an easier way
    THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, so far that's what I've been doing, or when I'm at a place with no network, use my 52mb flash dri've or burn files to cds and move them, it just seems to be quite a hassle. Thanks for the advice Cat, you have a good point, but if there any word on when the new firmware for the Zen Touch that enables driverless integration with WinXP and WMP0 will be out? I can't wait, that should let it work on my laptop, I'll search the net for apps for transfer with Linux. Thanks! I really love my zen and use it every day, props to Creative for making the best mp3 player on the market, I couldn't li've without it, no problems so far!
