UsingSCSI for storing SAP Database MAXDB on NAS
Dear All,
We are working with ECC 6.0 on Linux RHEL5 &Database MAXDB 7.6. For the SAP ECC 6.0 QA system we are planning to use NAS box using ISCSI for installation of Database storage,Is there any disadvantage in this? as we are planning to use file system for sapdata files in NAS. Any help in this highly appreciated.
Thanks a lot
Hany
Hi,
as you're a SAP employee, you should have really opened an internal message for this issue on the queue BC-DB-SDB(-INS).
Is this the very first MaxDB (or SAP DB) installation on this box? I think not, I think there might be some leftovers of an old installation that hasn't really been removed completely.
Note 599129 describes the steps needed to remove a SAP DB/MAXDB installation.
Currently, I think that you've still got some installation registry problem, very probably caused by the file /etc/opt/sdb still pointing to other Independent paths. I suggest you rename this file, to for example to /etc/opt/sdb.old and retry your installation.
Additionally, most of the new paths you've apparently chosen are far from the standard ones, probably the reason for your current issue:
Independent Program Path: /sapdb/NA8
Independent Data Path: /sapdata/NA8
Database Kernel path
[opt/sdb/7600] should be : /sapdb/NA8/7600
Using the above will create a <b>very confusing</b> and mixed up installation. I strongly recommend against it. I would rather go for the standard/default options.
Regards,
Roland

Best Practice for the database owner of an SAP database.
We recently had a user account removed from our SAP system when this person left the agency. The account was associated with the SAP database (he created the database a couple of years ago).
I'd like to change the owner of the database to <domain>\<sid>adm (ex: XYZ\dv1adm) as this is the system admin account used on the host server and is a login for the sql server. I don't want to associate the database with another admin user as that will change over time.
What is the best practice for database owner for and SAP database?
Thanks
Laurie McGinleyHi Laura
I'm not sure if this is best practise or not, but I've always had the SA user as the owner of the database. It just makes it easier for restores to other systems etc.

Advantage of using RAW devices for storing database
Hi,
Marry Christmas to all.
Oracle 10g version 10.2.0.1.0 (rac)
OS : HP-UX 11i
I am new to this enviornment. We are using raw devices for storig the database.
Please tell what are the advantages for using raw devices for storing the database?
Thanks.http://www.fors.com/orasupp/unix/37914_1.HTM
The above link explains the raw devices and advantages. -
DI Events Service over several SAP Databases
I have a problem with DI Events Services. I am developing an application that makes use of DI Events Service, in the documentation of the application says that you can make use of it to notification events in multiple databases, simply instantiating
B1DIEventsService object for each SAP database. At the time of the second instance and run the Connect method
I get "already signed the TCP channel", I wonder if the applications have this functionality and that way you can implement this
change.

Very good solution for the multiple database connections!!
Thanks for sharing your findings.
I'll implement this changes for the next release of DIEventService.

R3load EXPORT tips for 1,5 TB MAXDB Database are welcome!
Hello to ALL;
this post is addressed to ALL MAXDB-GURU's !!
I'v few questions to MAXDB Performance-Guy's for R3load Export on MAXDB!
(remark to my person:
I'm certified OS/DB migration consultant and have already done over 500 OS/DB migrations since 1995 successfully)
BUT now I'm face with following setup for Export:
HP- IA64 BL870c, 4 CPUu2019s Dual-Core + Hyperthreading activ (mean's 16 "CPU'S" shown via top or glance)
64 GB RAM, HPUX V11.31;
MAXDB 7.7.07
ECC 5.0; Basis/Aba 640.22
SAP-Kernel 640-Unicode Patch 381
8 sapdatas are configured on unique 200GB LUN's and VG's in HP-UX; on storage-side the 8 220GB LUN's are located on (only) 9 300GB-Disks with Raid-5 Level and within HP-UX each VG/LVOL is mirrored via LVM to a second desasterdatacenter (200m distance)
LOGFILES:
2 x 4 GB LUN Raid-1 on Storage and via LVM also mirrored to failover-center
MAXDB-Datasize: 1600 GB Overall and within this 1350 GB used, TEMPUsage about 25 GB !
MAXDB-Parameter-Settings
MAXCPUu2019s 10 (4 x IA64 QuadCore+Hyperthreading shows 16 Cores within top and galcne
Cache_SIZE= I/O Buffer Cache = 16 GB (2.000.000 Pages)
Data-Cache-HitRatio: 99.61%
Undo-Cache = 99,98%
the following sapnote for MAXDB Peformance and Migrations are well known and already processes
928037, 1077887, 1385089, 1327874, 954268, 1464560, 869267,
My major problem is the export-runtime with over 4 days on the first dry-run (6 R3load's running on Linux-APPL-Server), and 46h on second runtime, 6 R3loads running on DB-Server IA64)
the third trail-run was aborted by me after 48hours and 50% export-dump-space was written. In all 3 dry-runs, no more than approx 3.5GB DUMP-Space were written per hour!
My first question to all MAXDB-Guru'S: How can I influence/optimize the TEMP - Area in MAXDB?? I didn't find any hint's in SDN or SAPNOTES or MaxDB Wiki or google....As fare as I know, this TEMP area "resides" within MAXDB-datafiles, thus it's seperated on my 48 datafiles, spreaded over 8 LUN/VG/disks. But I see LESS throughput on disk's and MAXDB-Kernel uses only ONE of ten's cpu-cores (approx 80% - 120% of 1000%).
The throughput or cpu-usage doesn't change when I use 2 or 4 or 10 or 16 R3load' processes in parallel. The "result" is always the same: approx. 3,5 GB Export-Dump and 1 CPU MAX-DB Kernelprocess is used !
so the BIG Question for me: WHERE is the bottleneck ?? (RAID-5 Disk-LUNS mirrored with LVM ???)
on HP-UX scsi_queue_depth_length I'v increased default value from 8 to 32 to 64 to 128 --> no impact
2nd question:
I'v read OS-Note 1327874 - FAQ: SAP MaxDB Read Ahead/Prefetch, and we are running MAXDB 7.7.07.19! (MaxDB 7.8 is not suppored via PAM for IA64 640-UC-Kernel) and as far as I understood, this parameter will no HELP me on EXPORT with primary-key-sequence ! is this correct? THUS: which parameter HELPS for speeding up Export-Runtime?
MAXCPU is set to 10, but ONLY 1 of them is used??
so this post is for ALL MAXDB GURU'S!
who will be intrested to contriubte on this "high-sophisticated" migration-project with 1.5TB MAXDB-Database-size and ONLY 24h Downtime !!
all tips and hints are welcome and I will give us coninued updates to this running project until WE did a successfull migration job.
PS: Import is not yet started, but should be done within vSphere 5 and SLES 11 SP1 on MAXDB 7.8 ....and of yours in parallel to export with migration monitor, BUT again a challenge: 200km distance from source to traget system !!!
NICE PROJECT;
best regards AlfredHi Alfred,
nice project ... just some simple questions:
Did you open a message at SAP? Maybe you could buy some upgrade support, this could be usefull to get direct access to the SAP support...
Which byte order do you use? I know Itanium could use both. But it should be different, otherwise you would use a backup for the migration.
And the worst question, I do not even want to ask: What about your MAXCPUS parameter? Is it set to more than 1? This could be the problem why only one CPU is used.
Best regards

Missing IDES ECC5 installation disk for SAP Kernel - MaxDB Version
Hi,
Our HQ sent us installation disks for IDES ECC5. We copied them all onto our server and started installation. The system is now informing us that it can't find the SAP kernel information.
I can only assume that we're missing one of the installation disks.
We're desperate to get this installed and it will take another week for our HQ to send through another disk. Does anyone know whether we can download this from somewhere? We have had a look on SAP marketplace but you only seem to be able to download the kernel for Oracle, MSSQL and DB2....no MaxDB.
Additionally, if there is somewhere in Asia we can download this, then that would be better as we are having internet problems when connecting to Europe and the US.
Thanks in advance!
TristanHello Tristan,
This is not the correct forum to post your question.
You was not asked about the database(MAXDB) kernel software.
You need SAP kernel software
-> Review the installation guides at service.sap.com/instguides ->
mySAP Business Suite Applications -> mySAP ERP -> mySAP ERP 2004
-> SAP ECC 5.0 ->
Installation Guides of SAP ECC 5.0 SR1
-> < Please see the steps 'How to Proceed' > ->
-> MySQL MaxDB
< Part I: Planning and Preparation
Part II: Installation and Post-Installation >
-> select the documents for the OS of your server.
And the document from the 'Part I: Planning and Preparation' you will get information that you need the SAP kernel CD & & what is the minimum required version & the reference to the location at the SAP Marketplace to download it, if you don't have the required SAP kernel CD.
< You could download the CD from service.sap.com/installations ->
Entry by applicataion group ->
Installations and Upgrades -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NETWEAVER->
SAP NETWEAVER 04 ->
Installation and Upgrade ->
< OS> -> < database > -> CD 'SAP Kernel ... <database><OS>.
SAP kernel software is database, platform, Unicode specific. >
In the 'Part II: Installation and Post-Installation' document you will find the the list of the required DVDs for the SAP system-ABAP installation.
-> Are you running the installation of the the 'Central Instance', 'Dialog Instance' or 'Database instance' ?
For the 'Database instance' Installation you need:
SAP Installation Master DVD
SAP Kernel DVD
RDBMS DVD
SAP Export DVD
-> What CD/DVD do you have for the installation?
< You could download the CDs from service.sap.com/installations ->
Entry by applicataion group ->
Installations and Upgrades -> Entry by Application Group
-> SAP Application Components -> SAP ERP-> SAP ERP 2004 -> Installation and Upgrade -> <OS> ->SAP DB >
You could also order the CD, if you have problems with download from the SAP Marketplace.
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina
PS: SAP Note 19466 will give you information about download of SAP Kernel Patches.

For best performance what's the size of an image to be stored in database?
Hi all,
can any one tell me..for best performance what's the size of an image to be stored in database?
is it <256kb or >256mb?
when i google we can store image as varbinary(max) and its limit upto 2GB..
Can anyone exlain it?
is it performance wise better..
thanx in advance..
luckyYour question does not seem apparently meaningful. If you need to store a 5MB image in the database, you store a 5MB image, not a 200 KB image or a 200 MB image. Business needs always trumph performance.
Not surprisingly, the larger the image the more resources it takes to read and write it.
What is a meaningful question is whether you should use the FILESTREAM feature or not. The cut-off limit here is usually given as 1MB. That is, if your images typically exceeds 1MB you should use FILESTREAM and access the data through Win32
API. If your images are generally below this size, you should stick to regular T-SQL.

How to reload archived data into SAP database for object FI_DOCUMNT
Hi..could any one plz let me know how can i reload the archived data which is on third party storage into sap database back. The archived data is related to FI_DOCUMNT. We don't have the Reload program for this object. The requirement is : Some of the FI documents are archived before being cleared. So, we want to reload the archived data back to SAP database and then do some modifications.
Please tell me how this is possible..thanks a lot in advance.
It's urgent.
Thanks,
ShamimThanks Mylene. I've already gone through the same note..i was just looking out for the new standard program or any one have created any new program for the same. I think it's better we must wait for SAP to launch its reload program or else it's not possible to reload the archived data for this object.
Thanks

How to setup Data guard for SAP database?
Can someone please tell me how to setup data guard for SAP databases?
Thanks,
AbhiHi Abhi,
have a look at OSS 105047 - Support for Oracle functions in the SAP environment you find this under
14
Oracle Data Guard
You can use "Physical Standby".
You cannot use "Logical Standby".
You are allowed to use Fast Start Failover (FSFO) but SAP Support is not provided.
You can use Data Guard Broker.
You can use Maximum Performance Mode, Maximum Availability Mode and Maximum Protection Mode.
In the case of Maximum Availability and Maximum Protection, you must pay particular attention to a fast network connection in order to avoid performance problems.
Maximum Protection causes the primary database to terminate if problems occur in the standby database.
And here you find on Oracle white paper from 2010 http://www.oracle.com/us/solutions/sap/wp-ora4sap-dataguard11g-303811.pdf
Perhaps some SAP user have answers for you http://scn.sap.com/community/oracle/content?query=guard

Which is better datatype for storing Images in 11gr2 Database ?
Can anyone tell me which datatype should be maintained for storing images in database in terms of
1. Space
2. Speed.
And, Is there another way for storing images instead of database ?
Thanks/Regards in advacne.982164 wrote:
Which one have better speed, database system or file system ?Database is better all around. It is not just a question of speed. It is a question of storage, security, flexibility, scalability, robustness and so on.
If you use ASM and raw devices from a storage array or SAN, how do you get o/s files onto that? (requires a file system on the SAN/array LUNs)
If it is inside the database, database security, concurrency and consistency apply to the image. Outside the database? How do you control who has access? Prevent someone with slippery fingers from accidentally deleting/renaming/moving images files? How do you backup up the image data with the image attribute data in the database?
Having all this inside the database, part of the database, managed by the database, provides you with more flexibility, robustness, and security. After all a RDBMS is a data management system - it is designed for managing data. And that includes managing binary data.
As for speed. Reading a 24MB image is reading 24MB worth of data. Whether that data is read by process A from disk1, or process B from disk2 - the amount of data is the same. So if you want faster I/O, then use faster disks. If disk1 is faster, process A will perform better reading the image than process B. If disk2 is faster, the roles are reversed.
So I/O speed is not a direct function of process A or process B. It is a direct function of the I/O storage and fabric layer. Yes, a process's method of I/O can make a difference (e.g. using block reads not aligned with the physical blocks on disk). But this is more a configuration issue than process doing badly designed I/O calls.
So the speed question is a bit loaded as it has more to do with the architecture and design of the I/O system - and less to do with the process doing that I/O. You can have a highly optimised I/O process doing poorly using an old and slow I/O layer, and poorly written I/O process doing pretty well on a SSD I/O layer.
Databases like Oracle is designed for dealing with data - and thus effectively dealing with I/O. Lots of it. For lots of data. So I/O process design is not a consideration. The database processes will use the I/O layer as optimally as possible and as configured. -
Best Oracle datafile size for a SAP ECC6 database.
Hello,
We plan to migrate our ECC6 SAP database on a new Windows X64 plateforme running with :
- Windows 2008 R2
- Oracle 10.2.0.5.
The actual Oracle database size is more 2 Tbytes.
Please could help me to find the best size for the Oracle datafile in this new plateform ?
Today we create Oracle Tablespace for SAP with 8 GBytes datafiles but we have too many datafiles to managed.
Do you have experimented 16 GBytes, 32 GBytes, 64 Gbytes datafiles for Oracle Tablespaces on this kind of SAP Plateform ?
Thank you very much for your reply.
Best regards.
Jean-Pascal.Hello Jean-Pascal,
well the answer as usual - it depends )
We already discussed that topic some time ago - please check this thread:
big file or small file
Your storage sub system and stripping matters of course too.

Database distribution for several SAP Systems
Hi gurues, we have a very important concern about SAP on Z systems, it is possible/recommended to have on on Z system only one DB engine with several databases that correspond to several SAP Systems running on the machine?
Because we have AIX platform right now and we can not have that kind of database landscape, we only can choose between MCOD or one dataabase engine with one datase in one machine (we can not share db engine).
Hope this question is clear enoguh for you.
Regards
GustavoGustavo,
Sadly yes. You'll have to forgive some of my terminology. I actually work on the Basis team at my company and I am not a DBA. We happen to be running DB2 z/OS and we are using datasharing. For a sandbox ECC system we might have SID SE1 and DB2 sub-systems SE11 and SE12. For another sandbox BI system we might have SID SB1 and DB2 sub-systems SB11 and SB12. Even if datasharing is not used (and hence the 12 member would not exist, SE12 for instance), I would strongly recommend against MCOD and instead suggest using a different DB2 system for each SAP SID.
We have spoken to at least 1 customer that implemented their ECC (ABAP only) and Portal (Java only) SIDs as MCOD in the same DB2 z/OS system. Unfortunately, DB2 z/OS has some somewhat arbitrary limits for things like thread storage which MUST exist under the "2gig bar" (apparently due to some 31bit code still in use). Effectively, this limits the number of threads (and in the SAP world the number of SAP work processes) that a single DB2 member can service. I believe the limit is around 800 threads. Of course, with datasharing you can spread the load to multiple instances (SB11, SB12, SB13, SB14, etc), but then you must also plan for extra resources to be available in a planned failover for maintenance type situation. This particular customer ended up needing to fine-tune some java database threads and ended up needing an extra DB2 instance or two to handle the load during maintenance using planned failover.

Disp+work.EXE stopped when installing NW07 for CRM 2007 on Maxdb Windows
Hi,
I am installing NW07 for CRM 2007 on Maxdb 7.7 and Windows 2004 64bit.
The installer cannot start the dispatcher on step 32. The dispatcher starts with green and is running a while but Dialog queue is standstill. After few secodes the dispatcher changes to yellow as become disp+work.EXE stopped.
Any advice? I have checked the RAM and log sizes etc and they seem to be ok. Database is running ok.
System cannot connect the database?
