USMT - Move only file types that I specify

All the documentation seems to indicate that the default user.xml file will only migrate specific file types (.doc, .xl*, etc.) However, I have created dummy files in c:\test with a file extension of *.abc and that file is being migrated as well.
I know that I can exclude certain file types, but what if I only want to move specific types and everything else is not migrated.  The documentation seems to indicate this is the default behavior, but it's not working that way.  Anybody know how
to NOT migrate file types unless I specifically state they should be migrated (regardless of location on the disk).
Thanks,
Chris

Hi,
If you want to exclude a file type from the migration, regardless of the other <include> or <exclude> rules, you can use the <unconditionalExclude> element. This element excludes objects globally across all components:
<unconditionalExclude>
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc722303(v=ws.10).aspx
The following .xml file excludes all .mp3 files from migration:
<migration urlid="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/excludefiles">
<component context="System" type="Documents">
<displayName>Test</displayName>
<role role="Data">
<rules>
<unconditionalExclude>
<objectSet>
<script>MigXmlHelper.GenerateDrivePatterns ("* [*.mp3]", "Fixed")</script>
</objectSet>
</unconditionalExclude>
</rules>
</role>
</component>
</migration>

  • Itunes delays ONLY when playing mp3's. Also it delays when I move any file type into a playlist. Help! I'm about to go back to Windows Media Player!

    Hi friends! Like I said Itunes delays ONLY when playing mp3's. Also it delays when I move any file type into a playlist.
    Here's what I've done so far;
    I 've checked my external hardrive (by playing it off my internal instead), I've tried reinstalling (although it wasn't an uninstall), I've tried clicking on all the neccesary boxes (let itunes organize files, copy files, consolidate, and reorganize), I've tried different sound cards, I've tried moving files quickly (as some have said this works). I'm not sure what's wrong. I have 7000 songs.
    Any help would be great!

    Have you tried installing Media Manager on another computer and streaming the songs from there?
    How about smaller playlists? See the same problem?

  • "uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version" error message when opening a *.doc file with Word already running

    Several customers running different versions of Office 2011 (14.4.1-14.4.5) on OSX varying from 10.7.5 to 10.9.5, running on various kinds of hardware (iMac/MacBook Pro/MacBook Air) of various ages are having issues opening *.doc files if the Word is already open. The error message that gets displayed is, "XXXX.doc uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version"
    When the customer tries to open the same file via File-Open, she gets "The file is locked for editing. you can open the file as read-only".
    When trying to do so, she gets "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters".
    If Word gets Force-quit, the same document opens without any problems.
    1. Repairing Disk permissions was ran several times. and the volume was found to be OK.
    2. I have noticed that in this scenario either deleting the normal.dotm or com.microsoft.word.plist (~/Library/Preferences) sometimes resolves the issue, sometimes it doesn’t. There is no pattern to follow. All versions of Office are affected, the fully updated and the non-updated ones.
    3. I have tried completely removing the suite using Office 2011 Uninstall.app and/or Remove Office 2011 Uninstaller.pkg, then going through customer's library and manually removing all the Office references.
    4. None of these systems had Office 2008 in the past.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Reboot both the Mac and the server. Word opens .DOC files and Excel opens .XLS files. As you have found out by copying the files to the computer. It is the connection between the 2 computer that is causing the error.

  • Importing .mov "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format" error

    I have a .avi video from a camera and wanted to burn to a dvd to watch on dvd player. I converted the video to .mov but when I dragged into iDVD I received an error stating "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format". I converted to a .mp4 hoping that might work and had the same error. As far as I remembered .mov and .mp4 should work in iDVD and iMovie but I had the same error in both programs.
    Converted to .mov with iSquint, and to .mp4 with Quicktime.
    Any suggestions?

    hi,
    thank you for responding...  i followed your instructions and this is what comes up when i try to open the movie:
    QuickTime Player can't open_______.mov
    To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More.
    i've done nothing different with this movie.  it's the 2nd part of a longer project that i had to break into two parts.  the first part was successfully burned to disk.  i'm at a loss as to why this one is 'different' and why anything else might be required to make it work properly.
    btw, here's the info from the entire project:
    format: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480 (853 x 480)
    Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz

  • Files always download as "attachment.ashx" instead of the file name and file type that they actually are.

    Since I have installed the new version of Firefox (version 8.0), every single file I download is downloaded as "attachment.ashx" and won't open. I have to change the name as well as the file type in order to open the document.
    This happens regardless of if I'm downloading from email, from a website, etc.. All of the files I have downloaded also have already been named and had file types appended, but Firefox is changing them every single time. I have never had this problem before using the same sites and downloads.

    Please hurry up with a solution! This is causing havoc, as I cannot open any attachments at all! It defaults to Adobe Photoshop, and then I get an error message that it is the wrong type of file. These are all Word docs! I can't get my work done! Is there some kind of work around that I can use in the meantime to open these things?

  • Changing a file type that will not open

    sorry if this is  a super simple question but I poked around and can't figure it out. Some time back I rented a Nikon scanner and scanned and saved a bunch of my images to my hardrive. I can see the thumbnails of said photos plain as day. When I try and open said photos in Bridge of PS5.1 it wants to open the file in conjunction with the scanner for some reason. When I click to open an image the icon box from the scanner software pops up as if it is loading then the error message box comes up to say : 'The application Nikon Scan 4 quit' unexpectedly giving the option to Ignore/Report/Relaunch -  In any case - it wants to open the Tiff files I have saved through the Nikon Scan 4. I don't get it as to why that is but in any case I would imagine I just have to save as another file type? When I look to see the type of file it is : 'nikon scan Tiff file'
    Because I CAN see the thumbnails in Bridge all I need to do is change the type of file but I see no way to do it as it is not currently saved as any file name suffix - the name of the file is not .jpeg or .tiff - it simply does not have any file type currently associated with them

    'The application Nikon Scan 4 quit' unexpectedly giving the option to Ignore/Report/Relaunch -  In any case - it wants to open the Tiff files I have saved through the Nikon Scan 4.
    You should also check Bridge Preferences File type association. See what the default application to open in is for the tif files. If this is Nikon change it to PS and it should work.
    It might be that when having used the Nikon software there was an option to hide the extension selected.
    Any way, first duplicate one file and try to add tif as Tai Lao stated in his post and try if that is working.

  • Pop-Up Option boxes aren't displaying when trying to save or open file types that have them.

    Photoshop just becomes unresponsive until I use alt+f4 to close the invisible option dialogue.  As a result, I'm currently unable to do things like open PDF files or save JPEGs.  Any ideas?

    I've checked all other available help databases, and I wasn't able to find this problem.  Partly because it's hard to describe, I don't even know what terminology to use.  But here is the information that thread recommended posting:
    The exact version of the Adobe Application you are running: Photoshop CS5
    Your Operating System details: Windows 8 64 bit
    Amount of installed RAM: 16 GB
    Amount of free disk space: 7 GB on the solid state that photoshop is installed on.
    Make/Model of Video Card: Radeon 7870
    The EXACT text of any Error Messages you saw: No error message involved, just invisible dialogue boxes whenever doing something that involves a dialogue box, like opening a PDF, or saving a JPEG.
    Precise symptoms of your problem:
    We'll take saving a JPEG for example.  I go through the normal save as process, specify a file name, type, and location, and hit save.  Usually, a dialogue box would pop up here, prompting me to chose a quality level before the save.  Now, that dialogue box still pops up, but it's not on screen.  I can't interact with it, or find it with key commands (such as windows, shift, arrow, which should move it if it were on my other monitor), and I'm not able to do anything else with photoshop until I force close it with alt+f4.
    Incidentally, I just found a solution to the problem, but I haven't fixed the problem yet.  I unplugged my second monitor, and the dialogue boxes appear as normal.  I have been using Photoshop on my primary monitor, though, when my second one has been plugged in, and I haven't been able to see these boxes on my second monitor.  Does anyone know how I could fix this such that I don't have to unplug my monitor every time I want to use photoshop?
    Thanks.
