USMT with USB NIC

I'm looking for some insight on how others have done USMT, side-by-side, with reused USB NICs.  I would like to create computer associations to make this a very automated process, but I can't use the MAC address as the NIC it will detect gets reused
by the technicians.  Does anyone have a workaround that they use for this scenario?
Best, Jacob I'm a PC.

Make sure that you remove the MAC address after the process is done. For that you could do something like this:

  • 10.5.6 setup on mini with USB nic, not receiving DHCP from WAN (cable modem

    Hello,
I'm probably in a little over my head thinking I could configure MacOS X Server without much IT knowledge. But I started, so I'm not giving up yet.
    Here's my setup:
    — cable modem ethernet connects to USB nic (the apple macbook air one) plugged into mac mini running 10.5.6 Server
    — ethernet on mac mini connects to switch
    — switch connects to airport base station set-up as bridge
    — in the future other computers will connect over ethernet to the switch (that's why mac mini isn't plugged into base station directly)
    Here's the issue:
    — cable modem uses DHCP (no fixed IP).
    — when first installing 10.5.6 Server, modem was connected directly to ethernet on mac mini, and picked up everything from DHCP, worked fine. Ran all the system updates (started with a 10.5 initial install)
    — after everything was installed, I switched the modem to the USB ethernet adapter and ran NAT setup assistant. configured the USB Ethernet as the WAN, Ethernet as the LAN, turned on VPN.
    — now the USB Ethernet won't pick up the DHCP of the WAN anymore. It did it once, and then never again.
    — I've run the NAT setup assistant to switch the WAN and LAN nics to see if the USB Ethernet was the issue, but with the same results.
    — This setup used to work although not quite stable on 10.5.4 server.
    My initial questions:
    — is the firewall blocking the DHCP?
    — is the LAN DHCP messing with the WAN?
    — in the previous version I had to set the replythresholdseconds from 10 to 0 in the bootpd.plist for it to hand out DHCP on the LAN, but there is no such entry in the pootpd.plist anylonger, and the keynet_address entry that was missing from the previous version of bootpd.plist is now present, so it seems the bootpd.plist has been fixed by apple.
    — what am I doing wrong? Why doesn't this just work as advertised...
I know there are several of you out there that have the same setup working (I found posts from hirstey and DigiAngel with the same setup) so it must be possible. All your help is much appreciated!!
    Thanks,

    Thanks for your reply, DigiAngel.
DSL modems differ from cable modems as far as I understand. Where DSL modems are actually routers capable of NAT/DHCP, cable modems are just a network interface/brigde and can't do any of that. So it should pass the external IP to the computer. I'm writing on a laptop with the cable modem directly plugged into it, and it picked up the external IP etc. near instantly. The mac mini did the same before I ran the NAT setup assistant. I believe it picked it up once after that, but never since.
I had done a clean install, had the ethernet plugged into its internal ethernet port (en0) and was able to download all the system updates. Then plugged in the USB ethernet, I'm pretty sure it still picked up the IP there. Ran the NAT setup assistant and can't get anything to work anymore. Even with all services switched off.
So the modem is doing its job, but when I connect it to the USB nic the connection gets a self-assigned IP in about 3 seconds after seeing the cable is connected. The one time I've seen it get the right IP, it got a self-assigned IP first and then about 5 seconds later picked up on the correct IP. (And it picked up everything, including DNS server and search domains, which this laptop I'm writing on does not, although it works just the same).
Unfortunately, this laptop runs 10.4.11 which doesn't recognize the USB nic, so I can't test the adapter outside of the server environment. But I've had the genius bar test the adapter previously and it worked fine then, plus I've run the NAT setup assistant with the connections inverted (WAN over built-in ethernet, LAN over USB ethernet) with the same results: WAN gets self-assigned IP.
I've also tried configuring manual IP for the WAN from what I saw was given to this laptop (it kept the same IP even after being disconnected/reconnected, so I guess the IP for my modem won't change IP unless I reset it. Although I'm not sure if it's correct logic to assume the mac mini would pick up the same IP as well since I think that's actually tied to the MAC address and the IP doesn't belong to the modem but to the computer behind it).
Anyway, I'm not sure what to try next...
Hm. Wait, this might have something to do with it: the firewall logs the following:
    Mar 22 14:12:07 server ipfw[4997]: 65534 Deny UDP 73.227.220.1:67 255.255.255.255:68 in via en 2
Looking up 73.227.220.1 gives me dns1.inflow.pa.bo.comcast.net, clearly my provider's DNS server. Trying to get me an IP that my wirewall is denying? Turning off the firewall doesn't make it pick up the correct IP though... I have turned off all services and still just got a self-assigned IP.

  • Two Finger Right Click on late G4 iBook with USB Trackpad?

I learned that with OSX Version 10.4.7 it is possible to use the two-finger-click instead of ctrl-click for right-clicking. But this only works on the new Intel Macbooks/Pro. Well, this is nice.
For older Laptops with ADB-Trackpad there is a freeware program called iScroll2 which also provides this feature.
For the late 2005 G4 iBooks with USB-trackpads there is apparently nothing:
The feature doesn't come with 10.4.7 here and iScroll2 is ADB-only.
On the one hand I don't really get the problem here, why these machines are not supported.
Since there is no announcement from apple it seems that they are just not interested in supporting computers which have been sold till not even a year ago.
If Apple is definitely not planning to support this in the future I would at least expect that they publish the source for the USB-driver so that the open source communitiy can take care of the problem.
G4 Ibook, among others   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

have you tried installing iScroll? I'm pretty sure it
should work...by USB trackpad are you referring to a
trackpad plugged in to your USB port?!? (".)
Maybe I didn't explain it clearly enough in my OP:
The late G4 iBooks have a "Apple Internal Trackpad" which is a USB-Device, whereas older models sport an ADB-trackpad. In the late iBooks ADB is no longer present.
On the iScroll2 page (http://iscroll2.sourceforge.net/) you will find the following information:
"Models that have two-finger scrolling already built-in are not supported! These use a completely different, USB-based trackpad, the driver or which is not available as open source. iScroll2 is based on Apple's AppleADBMouse-209.0.10 driver for the ADB-based trackpads found on older models, which is available as part of the publicly released Darwin source code.."
So again: The feature mentioned in the topic is not provided by Apple, nor is the USB driver source code publicly available making it quite unlikely the OSS community will come up with a solution.

  • Make a router out of a simple notebook with one NIC (buy a second NIC)

    Hello all,
Before starting, I think I must say hello to you because I'm new here : this is my first post . So, in fact, I'm working with Linux since 5 years. I'm running Gentoo on my workstation and my old server, Ubuntu on my notebook and for family, and finaly, I'm running Red Hat at work place for workstation and servers. I'm a Linux and JBoss administrator .
I've decided to run/try Arch because it seams to growth with rock-solid ideas and it's a binary distribution. I now prefer a binary distribution for my server, because it's taking too much time to let old computer or notebook compile the whole world (alone or not ...). I prefer now looking around and learn another Linux distribution. This is why I started to install my first Arch Linux : I will try to run a server on a simple notebook. In fact, it's a working machine, but without any graphics capabilities (memory has burned...), and so, perfect for a little server low consumption. I want it to replace my current server/router running Gentoo on an old Pentium 3.
For now, I've encountered these little problem :
    - LID problem when screen is close : reboot never work (power off just after the BIOS, when the LID state is "screen closed"...) => disable LID connection (unplugged from motherboard)
    - ssh problem => must now use "/etc/hosts.allow" to let remote machine to be connected
    - try routing packet with one NIC => for now, doesn't work ...
    - try to get X11 Forwarding => doesn't work too, but it will works quickly
My infrastructure is just a server/router splitting in two part for the LAN at home :
    - one part is LAN with all workstations
    - the other part is LAN_router which is another network with only the ADSL router to access internet
    So, its looking like this : <machine1> => <switch> => <[eth1]server/router[eth0]> => <switch> => <router_ADSL> => INTERNET
All is fine ... with the old machine ... for the new one, it has only one network interface ... The question is : how to do routing with only one NIC ???
In theory, I "should" work ... but .. some component can have some little hard time to do the right things .. and for me, is not working right now.
The first try is to use one interface with one IP aliasing, like this :
    2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:1d:e4:a3:d5:1a brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    inet 10.2.1.8/26 brd 10.2.1.63 scope global eth0
    inet 10.2.1.66/26 brd 10.2.1.127 scope global eth0:0
    inet6 fc80::21a:e2ff:fea3:d56a/64 scope link
    valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
Two sub network are used :
    - 10.2.1.0/26
    - 10.2.1.64/26
I must have 2 ip on one NIC, so aliasing can be used (when testing, the new server/router is able to ping a workstation and the ADSL router ; it can also use internet). I've heart there is some problem with "iptables" to set forwarding rules when using IP Aliasing ... but I prefer try myself . It doesn't work for now, probably because of this. But, is there a way to use a "workaround" ? For example, if "iptables" is not able to play with aliasing, and so, interface such as "eth0:0", may be there is a way to tell it, like this :
    [root@serveurn ~]# iptables-save
    # Generated by iptables-save v1.4.10 on Sun Dec 12 17:30:01 2010
    *nat
    :PREROUTING ACCEPT [0:0]
    :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
    :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
    :POSTROUTING ACCEPT [0:0]
    -A POSTROUTING ! -d 10.2.1.0/26 -o eth0 -j SNAT --to-source 10.2.1.66
    COMMIT
    # Completed on Sun Dec 12 17:30:01 2010
    # Generated by iptables-save v1.4.10 on Sun Dec 12 17:30:01 2010
    *filter
    :INPUT DROP [0:0]
    :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0]
    :OUTPUT ACCEPT [9:932]
    -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
    -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
    -A INPUT -p icmp -j ACCEPT
    -A INPUT -s 10.2.1.0/26 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
    -A FORWARD -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
    COMMIT
    # Completed on Sun Dec 12 17:30:01 2010
... use the interface "eth0" (for the whole throughput) and do SNAT for all excepted for the LAN network ? But it seams to not work ...
I got a second idea : if it wan't work with aliasing ... may be can I use virtual interface and bridge ... create a bridge with "eth0" and "tap0" so I can add more than one ip in the machine .. and may be, will be able to route packet from these two interface ???
But for now, I have to understand why X11 Forwarding don't work ...
EDIT: xorg problem solved : xorg-auth was requested ...

    PRICELESS !!
@loopx: Honestly: return the USB NIC you just got, buy a compatible device(maybe an asus rt-n16) and install dd-wrt. You'll be a lot happier....

  • IPod Mini Compatibility with USB 1.1 (Please help!)

Hello. I'm turning 21 in a few days and am away at college... my parents, while divorced, decided to join forces to buy me a really nice gift for my 21st birthday... a brand new iPod Mini. My mom attempted to get me a Nano, she tells me, but they were out and the salesperson said this one actually held more music for about the same price, so she did the right thing in my opinion.
Anyway, I for whatever reason instantly had the worry that this iPod won't work with my computer. I don't have a lot of money so when I was a freshman in college I purchased a Dell for $500 which is still my computer right now. It has a USB 1.1 port. I run iTunes already as my music browser so I'm not worried about the program not working... I am simply concerned that when I receive the gift in the coming days that I won't be able to use it with my computer because of the older USB port. I've read stuff on the net that says that USB 1.1 WILL work, others have said it won't.
So does anyone have a sraight answer? Will my iPod Nano be usable using my circa 2002 Dell Dimension Desktop with USB 1.1? Anything on this would be greatly appreciated. I hope it works... my parents don't exactly have $250 to throw around for something I can't use.
Thank you so much for reading, hope to hear from some of you soon! -Colin Moriarty

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I would say USB 1.1 should work, but there is no absolute guarantee it will. The iPod nano should also work with USB 1.1, but again there is no absolute guarantee. If it works, the transfer speed will be slow but I believe you are prepared for this.
Stop worrying, Colin, for the time being. If you have any problems with your new gift, post back and we will try to help.
Meanwhile, I use my 2 iPod minis with Firewire, and both work perfectly. So if you have problems in the future you may consider switching to Firewire (by getting a Firewire PCI card and a Firewire iPod cable).

  • Hackers and USB NIC

I've taken on a new client and have inherited a mess. Far beyond what I'm about to describe.
This is a network of over 20 Macs and a Mac mini with OS X server.
Upon my first visit at this location I discovered the Mac mini server's built-in NIC had failed, and to corect this the prior IT person had set up an Apple USB 100-BT NIC for the LAN. He had also set up another Apple USB 100-BT NIC with a direct-connect to the internet via a public IP, bypassing the Cisco firewall.
    Don't ask why. ;-)
This second NIC with the direct connect has burned out 4 times so far. I firewalled it yesterday.
However, by reading through Console logs I did discover that hackers were trying to intrude via that NIC. The logs were flooded with thousand upon thousands of entries for this hacker activity - every single day.
Does anyone think this hacker activity was responsible for the burned out NICs? Each time the USB NIC would burn out there would be massive amounts entries in the Console logs for the hacker activity.
If someone were to have asked me if it were possible to burn out a USB NIC like this I'd say unlikely. But it sure does explain this nicely.

There are a variety of folks that are always trying to access Internet-connected systems and for various purposes, and that's part of the Internet environment, and it's why I usually recommend a server-grade firewall for configurations running OS X Server and server-oriented computing.  Having a directly-Internet-connected server is more effort and more risk than its worth, in my experience.
Electrical grid control to the level of an Ethernet uplink is not typically available to the nefariously-inclined.
All that written, I'd expect there's a wiring problem with the upstream Ethernet connection, and the NIC is receiving excess voltage, or possibly a grounding or voltage problem with the system and its power source or other system external wiring components that's being grounded via the NIC connection.   This can include nearby lightning, general grounding and wiring faults and floating grounds, interference or electric surges from unusual or large-amperage local devices, and related issues.  Too much power arriving via the NIC that burns it out, or too much power departing via the NIC that burns it out.  These repeated faults are usually environmental, and not usually triggered by the nefariously-inclined.
You can check with an electrician, and particularly one with some low-voltage experience.  The electrician may suggest monitoring the voltages at the system and at the network and there are tools available to do that, or might suggest surge suppressors or capable less-interruptible power supplies (LIPS, they're never truly uninterruptible), or some combination.
In my experience, simply replacing burned-out components isn't a viable long-term fix for power surges and over-voltages and grounding issues.
It's also possible that there's somebody locally that's accidentally or intentionally introducing voltages or surges where they shouldn't.  Phone line connections don't mix all that well with Ethernet connections, for instance.

  • Is there a problem with USB speakers and Final Cut Express HD?

I have audio only through my internal speaker for Final Cut - however all other sounds play through my USB Harman Kardon speakers fine.
I have tried sending the audio out to my M-Audio head too - and that has been fruitless.
I am really frustrated - I reinstalled the OS. And ran it with only Final Cut and the OS and still have the same issues. Even if I drag an MP3 into Final Cut it plays through the internal speaker. I also notice that the audio really lags behind the video when it plays through the internal speaker - if that means anything. I have made sure that the Canvas Setting is correct.
Tech support for the most part has been nice, but they are unable to help me.
Please help!!!! And thanks in advance.

Sorry, no actual experience with USB Audio devices.
I found this in the Pro forum, but the outlook doesn't seem good:

    Hi,
Same physical printer but when connecting to SAME computer using both USB and wireless it becomes two (logical) printers. Probably your default prnter is the wireless one, you have to select the right printer before print .

  • IPod nano works with USB 1.1 but not USB 2.0

Anyone using an iPod nano that works with USB 1.1 but not with USB 2.0? I am using Windows XP and when installing the iPod software from CD it recognizes the iPod and am able to transfer songs using iTunes but when installing SP1 or SP2 to enable USB 2.0 transfers, Windows XP only recognizes the iPod nano as a USB Mass Storage Device. This is the same with iPod Updater.

I have a similar problem with the following configuration:
    - Dell Dimension 4100 Desktop with 2 integrated USB 1.1 ports, Windows 2000 SP 4
    - PCI 6-Ports USB 2.0 Card ("Mentor" resp. www.bona.com.tw), Model USB20-PCI/6P
    What works well?
    - All my USB add-ons (1.1 and 2.0) on the internal 1.1 ports as well as on the USB2.0 PCI card
    - iPod Nano 4GB on internal 1.1 ports (external drive in windows 2000 as well as iPod in iTunes)
    - iPod Nano works as well as on the USB 2.0 card ONLY WHEN my old 4-port USB1.1 hub is connected between Nano and USB card
    What doesn't works?
My iPod Nano directly connected to the USB 2.0 card. Symptoms when connecting:
    - Windows is very slow, process "scvhost.exe" or "system.exe" using 99% of CPU for some minutes
    - iPod is recognised as external drive, but when I click on it, it is empty and copying files to it results in "I/O error"
    - iTunes doesn't recognise the iPod (of course, if even windows itself cannot read from it...)
I removed all USB drivers, reinstalled iTunes, iPod (by the way, I still don't understand what "iPod update" is good for, except for updating the iPod's firmware), deactivate the internal USB1.1 ports, no result.

  • HP ENVY 6t has many issues with USB headphone, Bluetooth and more serious issue

HP ENVY 6t doesn't work with USB headphone, unfortunately. could u let me know how to fix it?
Bluetooth mouse has been working for a day, it suddenly stopped working. Having checked the PC bluetooth connection, which said "Working properly".   Could you let me know how to re-connect, or re-work?
"Not complete shut-down" blue screen issue right after receiving the HP PC when I closed display to be in sleep mode.
I see the "Safe mode" "...." or "Normal mode" screen always.
The HP PC is not stable UNFORTUNATELY.
Even if just brand new HP PC, there seems to be many issues.

I would recommend using this document for your mouse: http://goo.gl/XDRRy
And using this document to troubleshoot your headphones issue: http://goo.gl/hV9fu
Most of the time with USB headphones, you have to download the driver from the manufacturer before they will work properly.

  • Connectivity Issues with USB 3 ports on macbook pro

Hi,  I have a zoom r24 which is no longer working as an audio interface with my new macbook pro.  I have read a lot about issues with USB 2 devices not being compatible with USB 3 ports on the macs. This seems to be midi as well as audio devices.  Can anyone recommend or point me to a list of supported devices for both audio and midi which are guaranteed to work with a late 2013 macbook pro retina display.  I cant afford a thunderbolt device.  Thanks steve

Just a wild thought here, but have you tried inserting a powered USB 2.0 hub between the MacBook and the interface?

  • 4s Hotspot tethering only works with USB and BT but not with wifi

    Hi,
XP sp3 - iPhone 4s with ios 5.0.1 - on Three one plan
Tethering with wifi works to a friends Samsung phone, wifi on the pc confirmed working with the apple store wifi, tethering with USB and BT works with good connection speeds on my laptop but when i try to tether with wifi it connects to the laptop at 54mbps and all appears well, even claims to have received a small amount of data packets, but no data comes to any browser. The iPhone reports 1 connection to the hotspot and stays connected with a non-pulsing blue bar after the first minute.
In the PC i have tried this http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-the-order-of-network-protocol -bindings
I've deleted my firewall (zone alarm) completely and turned off windows firewall to go naked surfing for a second even though they don't cause a problem with USB tethering, makes no difference
I've deleted the network connection numerous times
    "repaired" connection
    dissabled and enabled the wifi
turned off the wireless with a hardware switch and on again
    disabled bluetooth
    rebooted many times
    reinstalled itunes (latest)
loads more things i can't remember
This is causing me a nightmare. I've been through everything i can find online, been to the Apple store genius bar (genius appeared to have sub zero knowledge / interest as it involved a MS machine), been to a Three shop (legally not allowed to touch my PC apparently) and been to a Sony shop (laptop make, not their fault if my iphone doesn't work). All very frustrating.
Please help if you can! Any suggestion will be tried unless it involves sledge hammers or lakes, and only then for a few more days at most.

Turned off bluetooth on phone, turned off hotspot and on again, phone asked if i wanted to turn on bluetooth or go with USB and wifi only, said usb/wifi only. Still nothing. Rebooted PC and iphone. Turned on hotspot, pc seemlessly connects to network, still no data comes.
One odd thing is zone alarm asks me to "select a security zone for the wireless network at ip address: *******.0" every time and doesn't seem to remember the setting over sessions. When i get the status of the connection the ip address is *****.2 and default gateway is same ********.1 Not sure if that's anything.
Also getting a javascript error about an undefinded component (trustcheckermozilla) since i updated zonealarm but as i said even completely uninstalling zonealarm made no difference. I'll update firefox as well but tried with IE and still no data.

    Thanks for reply

I'm also having this problem. It's happening with my USB flash disk. I was almost buying another one when I tried it with Windows Vista on the same machine and it worked ok, then I tried Arch Linux (with kernel 2.6.30.5) on another machine and got the same error. After that I tried Ubuntu and it worked ok. Seems that Arch's kernel doesn't like my USB flash disk.
