/usr/bin/login Terminal start gives error

When i try to start up the terminal via standard /usr/bin/login, i get the following error:
login: PAM Error: Module is unkown
only been a problem since 10.4.6 update. Already repaired permissions.
I can change the shell command to bash, and it works. But if i try to run a "sudo" command, i get same PAM Error.
I'm quite stuck here.
The other weirdness is that I can't ssh into this machine from anywhere else. All of the system preferences are set correctly.
Not sure if this is a different problem, or symptom of the same problem.
Any ideas?

The line that you commented out at Gary's suggestion should be commented out. it's just there to remind you of what goes in which column.
With the line commented out:
# login: auth account password session
Are you still getting the error message that you initially were?
if so, verify the the modules exist.
they should exist under /usr/lib/pam

some have configuration files. On linux they're stashed under /etc/security. but OS X, seems to want to place them else where. judging from the output of
strings run again, pam_securetty.so, it's looking for it's configuration file under /etc.
a tad dated, and it doesn't cover all of the modules that are available, but
it may give you a better understanding of PAM.

  • LR 5 no starting, gives error "An error occurred when attempting to change modules." it is a paid version

    LR 5 no starting, gives error "An error occurred when attempting to change modules." it is a paid version and i will soon leave to a ship as i am a seaman, any help available?
    Thank you in advance

    Actually i did check the site for similar questions and found one without unfortunately any solutions, therefore and as i am about to embark a vessel, due to my job Captain in Merchant Marine Ships, I re posted this matter hoping to have a solution from somebody in ADOBE keeping in mind that i never hesitate to make the purchase of the software believing that i would not have this kind of problems with a company such as ADOBE.
    Thanks again and apologise if my post is duplicated, however i do need a solution.

  • Compiling error with /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -l error

    With the help of ToddLittle, I have solved a lot of problem with tuxedo as I am a freshman to it.Thank you ToddLittle!
    However I meet a new problem with compiling my new program. I got this error:
    /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -l/home/cjf/oracle/tuxedo12.1.1.0/include
    where /home/cjf/oracle/tuxedo12.1.1.0 is my tuxedo installation path.
    I build it under ubuntu 12.04 64 bit and my IDE is eclipse.
    How to solve it? thanks!

    Usually it is best to execute the script that is installed in the Tuxedo installation directory that sets up all the necessary environment variables.  That script is $TUXDIR/tux.env.  Source that script before trying to use buildclient or buildserver or any other Tuxedo command to solve most problems like this.
    PS You might want to check out Solaris Studio if you want to use an IDE as there is a Tuxedo plug-in for it that really helps in developing Tuxedo applications.

  • Updated itunes, error message about mobile popped up during installation, then after installation, tunes will not start. gives error that a dll file is missing.

    I downloaded the new Itunes version. During installation, there was an error message that said no Mobile access.  After installation, Itunes would not open.  Gave an error message that a DLL file was not found. Removed itunes from computer and initiated new download.  Same problem with new download. Still does not open. I'm stumped.  I have over  30,000 files in itunes and use it every day HELP

    Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
    Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
    Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
    The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
    Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

    cheers, Rob

    Hello Diesel,
    As per Note 1266729.1 : "Applying Patch 8557019 and encounter /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ldeb error running make -f ins_procbuilder.mk install" this can be fixed by appying patch 8551790 first.

  • Terminal Starts Up With Errors

    When I start Terminal I see:
    Welcome to Darwin!
    export': not a valid identifier
    export': not a valid identifier
    export': not a valid identifier
    export': not a valid identifier
    ': not a valid identifier
    When I look in .profile I see:
    # Your previous .profile (if any) is saved as .profile.dpsaved
    # Setting the path for DarwinPorts.
    export PATH=/sw/bin/sw/sbin/bin/sbin/usr/bin/usr/sbin$PATH
    export CFLAGS=-I/sw/include
    export LDFLAGS=-L/sw/lib
    export CXXFLAGS=$CFLAGS
    export CPPFLAGS=$CXXFLAGS
    export ACLOCAL_FLAGS="-I /sw/share/aclocal"
    export PKGCONFIGPATH="/sw/lib/pkgconfig"
    export MACOSXDEPLOYMENTTARGET=10.4
    DISPLAY=:0.0; export DISPLAY
    test -r /sw/bin/init.sh && . /sw/bin/init.sh
    The error is from the Path addition ... don't know where that came from; I may have been reading something suggesting I add it, but frankly don't remember where or when.
    However, that sentence is found in a "Fink" file I saw once.
    Any ideas how to correct the problem?

    with only the following lines active:
    # Your previous .profile (if any) is saved as .profile.dpsaved <<<<<<<<not true, not there!!!
    # Setting the path for DarwinPorts.
    export PATH=/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/bin/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:$PATH

    Yields:

  • Need to delete /usr/bin without using terminal

    In a bit of a bind.
    All how-tos detailing how to delete or alter the /usr/bin file involve terminal, but terminal won't work b/c of this error
    login: PAM Error (line 396): System error
    login: Could not determine audit condition
    [Process completed]
    I alterred something in usr/bin and need to change it but must do so with some other program other than terminal (altering that usr/bin file will then fix terminal).
    Kind of a chicken or egg problem.

    I take it you're no Unix hand, so I hope you otherwise know what you're doing since deleting /usr/bin will remove important files used by the operating system.
    Boot into single-user mode. At the prompt enter:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    If you receive a message that says "*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
    Next enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    This will make the filesystem writeable. You can navigate by entering:
    cd /usr/bin
    This will take you to the /usr/bin directory. Note that in single-user mode you are root. Much damage can be done if you aren't careful. When you finish enter:
    reboot

  • [SOLVED] Qtcreator won't start up: Timeout running '/usr/bin/g++'

    I have no idea where to even start from or what to search for.
    When running from terminal, qtcreator throws these lines (every few minutes) and doesn't start up:
    $ qtcreator
    QByteArray ProjectExplorer::runGcc(const Utils::FileName&, const QStringList&, const QStringList&): Timeout running '/usr/bin/g++'.
    QProcess: Destroyed while process ("/usr/bin/g++") is still running.
    QByteArray ProjectExplorer::runGcc(const Utils::FileName&, const QStringList&, const QStringList&): Timeout running '/usr/bin/g++'.
    QProcess: Destroyed while process ("/usr/bin/g++") is still running.
    QByteArray ProjectExplorer::runGcc(const Utils::FileName&, const QStringList&, const QStringList&): Timeout running '/usr/bin/g++'.
    QProcess: Destroyed while process ("/usr/bin/g++") is still running.
    There are no g++ processes before running qtcreator. After running it, I see new defunct g++ processes popping up (along with output above):
    $ ps -ef|grep g++
    void 1145 1126 0 09:23 pts/1 00:00:00 [g++] <defunct>
    void 1234 1126 0 09:24 pts/1 00:00:00 [g++] <defunct>
    void 1287 1126 0 09:25 pts/1 00:00:00 [g++] <defunct>
    void 1389 1126 0 09:26 pts/1 00:00:00 [g++] <defunct>
    void 1394 837 0 09:26 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto g++
    This started a few days ago, probably after a recent update, I have a fully updated system. This doesn't happen on my other machine, but I can't find any difference. I even deleted QtCreator.conf and QtCreator.ini in ~/config/QtProject, but result is same. It didn't create new .conf and .ini files by the way.
    Any help/advice on where to start debugging this is appreciated.

    I have the same problem.
    Well, at least, i also get this error:
    % qtcreator
    QProcess: Destroyed while process is still running.
    QProcess: Destroyed while process is still running.
    Cannot update Qt version information: /usr/bin/qmake-qt4 cannot be run.

    QByteArray ProjectExplorer::runGcc(const Utils::FileName&, const QStringList&, const QStringList&): Timeout running '/usr/bin/g++'.

    [Edit]
    Hang on, update fixed it for me..

  • Tcl/tk:  #!/usr/bin/wish in a script file does not start wish

    When executing a tcl/tk script file, 'wish' does not execute the tcl/tk commands in the file.
    Instead I get error messages: "command not found" from tcsh for every tcl/tk command in the file. I use tcsh as login shell.
    The first line in the script file is: #!/usr/bin/wish. The program is at this place.
    Starting 'wish' with my tcl/tk file as argument works fine.
    Starting the wish.app and "sourcing" the script file works fine.

    Thanks for the help so far.
    Using
    /usr/bin/wish led.tk
    works.
    using
    ./led.tk
    does not even start wish. I checked with Activity Monitor.
    Below are my "wishes", the first one is actually a link to wish4.8.
    ls /usr/bin/wi*
    wish
    wish8.4
    wish8.4-X11
    wish8.4.7
    wish8.5
    But I am one step closer.
    Starting X11.app and starting my script in an xterm and using
    '#!/usr/bin/wish8.4-X11'
    in the script works.
    Using
    #!/usr/bin/wish8.4
    has still the same symptoms. For me it looks like a bug. I wonder if anybody can verify on MacOS 10.4.3

  • Error Message in xcode: Command /usr/bin/codesign failed with exit code 1

    I am attempting build my iPad application on my device and I have went though the provisioning and successfully created an App ID, provisioning, etc. and when i 'Build and go' i get this error message:
    *Command /usr/bin/codesign failed with exit code 1*
    The only thing that I could think of that might be causing this is that when I 'Build and Go' on my device it come up with this pop-up message from xcode twice:
    +codesign wants to sign using key "MY NAME" in your keychain.+
    +Do you want to allow access to this item?+
    Please Help.

    Hey jamez97,
    In Xcode, top left hand corner of the window. Access the drop down menu, make sure that you have;
    1) Set to run on the DEVICE
    2) Selected DEBUG
    3) Connected your device
    click build and run...adjusting these sometimes works when i have the same error as you.
    You should have also added your device the provisioning profile you made. If you haven't done this, you can do it via the iOS Devcentre --> provisioning portal -->launch assistant.
    Hope this helps...if it doesn't, post back and somebody else may be able to give you the solution.
