/usr filesystem is corrupted

I have two T1000 machines and a Solaris 10 is installed on it. Due to Power failure /usr file system crashes and most of the services gone offline or disabled. At Ok prompt when i tried to run it in single user mode it automatically runs in run-level 3. I am unable to check file system by fsck. can anyone help me.

you can boot off a cd/dvd install media into single user: boot cdrom -s
from there you can fun fsck on your slices.

    Hi ,
My development server file system usr/sap/<sid> corrupted we don't have backup of this filesystem
what is the procedure to get the system ready ,Database is working fine ,all the filesystems are fine except the mentioned one
    Thanks&Regards

    Hi,
You dont need to create any directory other than /usr/sap(Hope its file system).
SAP installation will take care of this and finally you can restore the DB.
To Save the time you may proceed with system copy option as well.
if installation what are the checks to be performed
Its just like a normal installation , may refer installation guide , additionally make sure to have a valid backup of existing database .

  • /lib symlinks /usr/lib. Doeas it mean /usr HAS to be mounted??

For traditional Unix systems (FHS-compliant) it is (was?) completely safe to unmount (or even delete) the `/usr' filesystem. There are (were?) no files critical to the system "itself" - only applications, daemons, desktop data etc.
Since now under Arch `/lib' symlinks `/usr/lib'. But `/lib/modules/<kernel>' stores kernel modules - even those that are critical; `/lib' also stores libraries critical to binaries in `/bin' ans `/sbin'! Does it mean that since now inaccessible `/usr' may result in a non-booting system???

Arch uses an initramfs, so all necessary tools for rescue operatiosn should be included there. As long as /boot is working, you'll be able to boot in an initramfs-console.
    critical to the system "itself"
Well, what do you define as critical? Text-console and writing files? Mounting? Networking?

  • Adding filesystem space

How can I add filesystem space to a filesystem that has reched 100%? It is the /usr filesystem and it is on a x86 machine running solaris 10. Will this also be the same way adding filesystem space on a Sparc machine?

Since /usr is just a loop back file system in a zone, I doubt you're really asking about zones here...
That said, check out this -- it might help:

  • Windows traditionally unstable since win95, filesystem since XP

I have to reinstall windows every 1-2 years because of its instabilities, and it's been this way since win95. data drives are just fine, only the system drive has its filesystem corrupted. I do chkdsk /f on a regular basis.
I can't leave my PC on for more than a week before windows (fill in the blank, I currently use XP and 7) gets so unstable that I have to restart. this also includes putting the computer to sleep every day - I would also consider this leaving the PC "on".
I hear friends and MVP's who only use Sleep seemingly forever and never shut down, but I have never had this kind of nice thing. not sure why.
after 1-2 years, programs run funny looking like they are buggy, due to filesystem corruption on the system drive
please fix this instability. some posts have commented that any desktop OS is the reason (the commenter was on a linux forum, but included windows too). I might agree, but I have no basis to understand why others have success while I do not. so I don't understand
the dynamics. some have told me it's the drivers. hmm. with linux, drivers come from linux folk.
bugs are bugs. looks like a program bug to me. especially when the filesystem gets corrupted for no good reason.
    please fix. please please fix.

I can understand your frustration, but bear this in mind: the vast majority of people do not have a problem with their filesystem. In fact, the most common cause of a corrupt filesystem is a failing or faulty hard drive. Even you admit that "others
have success while <you> do not". Perhaps you should consider upgrading your drive.
Outside of this your post is hopelessly short on details that might solicit help. On the other hand, perhaps all you wanted to do was vent.

  • /usr is at 100% capacity

I am new to unix. The /usr file system is full on my machine. What are my options to fix it?
Can /usr space be increased on the fly?
Can any files or directories in /usr be deleted?
Can I move /usr from disk 0 to disk 1?
Can that prevent my new programs from installing?

Was /usr already full after installing Solaris. Or did it fill
up only after some time? (perhaps by installing stuff in
/usr/local/bin; or by core dumps in the /usr filesystem; or
some log files with huge amounts of data)
The following command lists all files in /usr that are 4MB or
bigger - maybe you find some old junk that you forget about and
that doesn't belong in /usr and can be deleted:
    <pre>
find /usr -xdev -type f -size +8000 -ls
    </pre>
There are 8 files listed here that belong to the solaris
OS: 3 java file in /usr/java*, 3 files under /usr/openwin,
one file in /usr/sadm and one in /usr/dt. Of cause these
    should <b>not</b> be deleted.
If you manually sized the partitions and after installation
/usr is just a bit too small you may be able to fix the
problem by using tunefs and reduce the minfree percentage.
(see the tunefs(1M) manpage, option -m)

The packages are split because some systems do not have writeable /usr filesystems. So the packages are split so that you can install the root components and they won't fail on a non-writable /usr.

  • IPod Classic not recognized by iTunes and PC

My old iPod classic has had minor problems throughout the years from songs cutting out in the middle of a song to battery issues but now my iPod Classic is unrecognized by my pc.
I have tried placeing it into forced diskmode which comes up with the basic "connect to computer" symbol and as soon as I connect my cord my iPod Classic restarts and displays the Apple Logo. I have even tried putting it into disk mode while connected but the same thing happens.
I plan on just leaving the iPod classic connected to my docking station for home listing since it has the battary issues.
If anybody can suggest any ways of fixing this connection problem please help me I am going crazy trying everything with no avail.

Your iPod filesystem is corrupted, so your music and podcastr is in the Others, this is most likely caused by a slow USB connection, which timeout during sync.
    Try the Hard Reset first
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
Then do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, in this earlier post by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but help you decide if your iPod is dying and causing the timeouts.
    Have a nice day!

  • Cannot reinstall Tiger : installer stuck (cannot make disk bootable)

    Good afternoon experts,
I am writing to you here as I have a problem with the Tiger installer which suddendly stops when trying to install on a prepartioned disk.
First, some background information : I have a 20' iMac Intel machine which I bought on February 06 (well designed machine, happy with it so far). The thing is, I have had serious crashes and lockups using the UB version of VLC (media player) which led me to hard reboot the machine several times. Despite the journaling on the disk, some of my filesystem was corrupted, seemingly beyond repair (some apps did not even boot, nothing happened when I plugged in an external disk, etc). Scanning for disk errors and permissions problems revealed that a lot of files had been damaged ("extended allocation" error) in both the system and in my applications.
As I did not know what to do (I should have asked first here whether it was possible to reinstall only parts of the OS using, maybe, a package manager), I synced my backups and went for a reinstall.
The thing is, the disk is already partitioned, as I also run Linux on the machine (updated firmware and repartitioned the disk w/ BootCamp; worked well). It contains, in that order : the hidden EFI partition (fat32), the macOSX HFS+ volume (where I want to install), Linux swap partition, HFS+ partition (for use w/ rEFIt, the EFI bootloader), and two Linux ext3 partitions.
The install starts fine (booting from the DVD which came with my machine), the macOSX volume is formatted but the installer just then stops. Looking at the logs, I can see that it is because it cannot make the volume bootable (this is what the error message says). Note that it correctly read the partition table/EFI partition scheme as it gives me the correct partition types I have presented above. Also note that I cannot do an "archive and install" procedure, seemingly because I have insufficient space (6GB free on the volume); the installer does not give me any choice. Finally, I can still boot into Linux holding the 'Alt' key and using the builtin volume chooser to start on the second HFS+ volume.
I am asking for help to you gurus, to know what to do here. I was think maybe something like using the shell to do a manual 'bless' would solve the issue; I would like however to be sure before proceeding. Otherwise, is there a manual installation procedure (as there is for instance on the Debian installer, allowing to skip/redo some install steps)?
    Thanks for your help experts,
    Vincent
PS: I am going to see whether I can collect the logs and post them here.

    Hello back,
As I did not find a way to attach my logs, I am posting the most relevant parts of it here.

  • Vista and Solaris 10, are they compatible?

I have attempted to follow dual boot guides found everywhere, but none tailor specifically to (or eve mention) Vista. This is a problem, because Vista does not use the same method of boot as previous versions of NT.
So far, in my many failed attempts at creating a Vista dual boot, I have experienced this:
When I install Solaris 10 on any partition (Solaris installs correctly and works great), and then attempt to install Windows Vista, Vista says all of my partitions do not meet its requirements for installation (that the drive is NTFS and at least 12 GB is all it tells me). Even after formatting, deleting, recreating, and reformatting a drive, the drive is still unusable. Only after deleting ALL drives, including Solaris 10, and recreating and brand new first partition does Vista allow me to install. If I create a partition that Vista allows me to use, and also a partition to use with Solaris, and THEN install Solaris, the partition that Vista liked can no longer be used!
When I install Windows Vista first (and it works fine) (which is what I tried first and reasoned is what I should be doing), and then install Solaris 10 on a partition (it installs correctlt and works great), I load up my computer and go into the GRUB bootloader. I can select Windows. However, when attempting to load windows, I get an error (in the Vista font by the way) that says my operating system cannot be loaded. When I load my Vista install disc, it cannot find any installations of windows, and it cannot repair the master boot record, saying something like the filesystem is corrupt. However, just as an experiment, I loaded Vista onto the former Solaris drive, and looked at my first partition. Every file was there, intact.
I have attempted this with Windows Home Premium 32 bit, Windows Business 32 bit, and Vista Ultimate x64. I don't want to believe that it's impossible to load Vista and Solaris simultaneously, I've seen as much stating its impossibility as I've seen documents telling me how to do it (<- cold irony).
As long as I can get AN INSTALLATION of Solaris 10 on my machine at the same time I have Vista able to boot, I'm fine, but I seem to have lost on all fronts.

In Solaris Express, this is not an issue, according to this weblog:
    http://blogs.sun.com/moinakg/entry/solaris_vista_dual_boot_conclusion
For versions of Solaris Express prior to buid 70, this method was described for creating a dual-boot with the oh-too-picky Windows Vista:
    http://linux.wordpress.com/2007/02/17/vista-and-solaris-express-dual-boot/
I am going to assume that setting up a dual-boot with Solaris 10 is similar to, if not the same as, Solaris Express, since the only steps specific to Solaris are the files I copy from Solaris.
I hope this helps anyone else with a problem similar to mine.

  • IPod Classic won't Sync to computer, says 74gb out of 80gb are used -but there's nothing on ipod. How do I restore?

iPod won't Sync to computer, says 74gb out of 80gb are used -but there's nothing on ipod. How do I restore? Is anyone else familiar with this problem? It had over 25 movies, thousands of songs & hundreds of pictures, and it seems like they're still on there, because 74gb are used out of the 80 but when I turn the ipod on it appears to be at factory, fresh out of the box settings and my computer wont recognise it at all...

For the following suggestion, when you connect the iPod to the PC, and iTunes open up, please close it, before you fix the drive.
Your iPod hardisk filesystem is corrupted, and maybe repaired by using command line, under DOS window.
    chkdsk drive: /F
where drive: is the iPod ID D: or E:
You can also try clicking the IPod properties, and run error checking in GUI, tick  "fix all error."
If you have access to a Mac, you can use DiskUtility, and run FirstAid to repair the iPod.
    Good Luck!
BTW, this problem arise because, iPod did not complete, closing, the Sync process, due to timeout, for Windows systems, I think it is maybe caused by Antivirus, or some other plugins, trying to make windows 7 look like Mac OS X.

Ipod 160gb classic says that there's an error and would I like to scan and fix it.  Either response freezes the message and Itunes, and when reopened won't show my ipod.  I've gone into Computer, then right clicked my ipod, choosing properties, then tools, then checked the drive for errors.  I've then clicked "automaticlly fix file system errors", and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" to see it freeze again with either selected.  My ipod shows no music, but the memory is still used up.  I can't get it on itunes to delte or add any songs.  What do I do?

Your iPod filesystem is corrupted, so all your music is in the Others segment, but most of the time, Windows, can't successfully move/ remap the bad cluster. (timeouts?)
Do the iPod disk diagnostic on your iPod, as in this excellent earlier post by tt2.
It wont fix your problem, but help us in troubleshooting.

  • Windows 8, asked to Scan and Fix

    Hi All,
My iPod Classic (160GB) lives in my car, connected to a Parrot handsfree kit.  Today it stopped playing music and when I tried to access the device on the Parrot kit it gave a message saying that the software or device was not supported.  A few minutes later it then started to play some music.
I got home and plugged it in to my Windows 8 PC, the PC plays a sound to say something has been connected and it said there is a problem with the disk and asks if I want to Scan and Fix it.  I know from previous experience that this does nothing to fix issues with iPods.
The iPod was recognised in iTunes and did allow me to sync fine but it didn't appear in My Computer or in Disk Management. It appeared in Devices and Printers as an Apple USB device, not an iPod. In Device Manager it appeared as a USB device but with different information than seen in Devices and Printers and with an exclamation point next to it.
While the iPod was connected and seen in iTunes I tried the follwoing:
CHKDSK (http://yourlocaltech.com/blog/2008/02/24/resolve-vista-scan-and-fix-error-when-p lugging-in-ipod-or-other-devices/ . I found this while searching these forums for help) - it says that the volume can't be opened for direct access.
Update USB device driver through Device Manager - it said the driver is up to date.
Update driver through Devices and Printers - it said the driver is up to date.
Checked for software updates within iTunes - it is up to date.
Reset iPod using Menu and centre button.
I then ejected the iPod through iTunes and plugged it in again. This time the system made a sound to say it could see a new device then made a sound to say a devices was removed. iTunes no longer saw the iPod at this point.  After waiting a few minutes it went back to being seen by iTunes and Windows asking me to Scan and Fix.
Is it looking like my iPod is slowly dying or can this be fixed?

  • Ipod classic not allowing access to to music or pod casts - shows zero files in music and pod cast but used space shows 3/4 full it is recognized by itunes sometimes on my pc but unable to view content

ipod classic shows disk 3/4 full  but when i look in the folders  it shows zero for music and zero for podscasts. i can not access these folders on the ipod or when it does connect to my windows computer thru itunes.  it does not connect 90% of the time now.  i let it check the disk when it was connected to my pc which did not good  -  any other ideas?  other than restore?
