/usr/sbin/PasswordService: SSH daemon hangs; No more terminal windows
Hi ! I'm using OS X server 10.4.6
it's the second time I see this behaviour.
A while ago I coun't connect to my server via ssh and I kept getting a
"/usr/sbin/PasswordService: Client response doesn't match what we generated". I introduced the password but the client seemed to hang after I type it.
Also I've noticed that for some reason I couln't open more terminals.
I always got [Process Completed].
I rebooted the server and everything seems ok, except the fact that when
I type "w" on a terminal, I get 29 admin entries on tty's:
p1 -> p9
pa -> pf
q0 -> q9
qa -> qf
I don't have a clue about what happened here but at least I can open more terminals, and ssh connections are ok.
Can anyone help me with is ?
Thanks !
David

This has brought up a point of interest regarding the Wiki and how it can accommodate these kinds of tutorials and guides.
Much like the "commonly used applications", would it be wise to create a page simply linking to these Guides/How-To's?
So essentially you've got a "Guide" section, with categories, e.g.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Guides_and_Tutorials
GUIDES
***NOTE: These guides can become outdated rapidly, use at your peril.****

Essentially so it can act as a central source for all these guides (as personally I haven't come across them unless deliberately looking) (edit: In fact, I still can't find that iproute2 vs ifconfig reference guide)

Thanks for the answer. Just to be more complete I reported all the logs related to the update, in such a way to understand what happened...maybe. You'll see some errors with grep. I reinstalled grep and that error was no more there...i think:

Leopard hangs starting /usr/sbin/ocspd after both upgrade and clean install
I have a clean SuperDuper backup, so I can always go back to Tiger, but since I've paid for Leopard, it sure would be nice to run it!
I've got a MacBookPro with 4GB of RAM that's only a few months old. It has been happily running 10.4.10.
Earlier today, I tried an Upgrade to Leopard, which appeared to work, though the system would not boot. The gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinner appears, and then the spinner stops. Powering off and restarting hangs at the same place. Booting off the external drive properly boots Tiger and mounts the internal drive on the Tiger desktop, so the internal drive appears to be fine. Disk Utility says it's fine. It just hangs.
Since I have a perfect bootable backup, I go for the clean install. This first appears to work, and lets me boot Leopard. I restore Documents and Music and begin to install apps, and I notice that some apps appear to be hung. After installing each app, I run it, enter whatever license information is required and update to the latest rev, and quit it. At some point I realized that the last few apps I'd quit are still running. A quick check of top reveals that none of them are chewing up a lot of CPU, but when I quit top, I can't get back to a shell prompt, either. Opening a new Terminal tab doesn't get me to a prompt, either. I finally hold down the power key to reboot.
It hangs at the same gray screen. Disk Utility still says the disk is clean.
I use Command-V to boot in verbose mode, and I note that the last line that appears is:
/usr/sbin/ocspd[86]: starting
I've rebooted several times, and that's always the last line that displays. Apparently something has scrambled ocspd?
I'm going to try another clean install, and avoid GlowWorm FW Lite this time around. I'd installed a bunch of apps, but I think that was the first one to hang on me.
Anyone else with similar experiences? I've never had trouble with OSX upgrades before, so I'm still kinda in shock about this.I restarted in Safe Mode (hold down shift), which did start!
I then removed GlowWorm 1.5.3beta by simpy dragging it to the trash (couldn't find an uninstaller anywhere).
Now when I boot, it still hangs, but ocspd is no longer the last message displayed. Instead, I get 'Login Windows Application Started' last sometimes, and mds complaining that there was an unclean shutdown of /.Spotlight-V100/long/path/name sometimes.
I'm trying Safe Boot again, but I'm not sure what else to try to remove! I think I'm back to Clean Install again after all. -
Excessive /usr/sbin/ocspd launching
I keep seeing "/usr/sbin/ocspd[583]: starting" in my console log. It averages a restart every 15 minutes or so, sometimes more frequently.
I haven't broke down and used gdb on the **** thing, because I don't feel like debugging Leopard like Linux, which I actually paid for. I'm wondering if this is typical behavior. Is the daemon really supposed to stop so often? It gives the impression that it's crashing.
If it is an actual bug, fortunately the it's open source and Apple has posted code. I'll fix the thing myself, if I must, but I'm hoping it unloads when it's unused and this is a non-issue.

Usr/sbin/pppd and usr/sbin/vpnd. What are these?
In performing a permissions repair, it listed usr/sbin/pppd and usr/sbin/vpnd as having been modified and unable to repair. I also performed a permission repair by booting from the Leopard disc, and got the same results.
What are these, what do they do, and where are they? I couldn't locate them through a search.Jim Ireland wrote:

As Limnos says, don't worry about the messages.
What are these, what do they do, and where are they? I couldn't locate them through a search.
pppd and vpnd are daemons (faceless helper programs). pppd is the Point-to-Point Protocol Daemon, commonly used by dial-up modems and DSL and other kinds of network links. vpnd is for VPNs, or virtual private networks.
Read the man pages for pppd and vpnd for more information (possibly even more than you wanted to know).
And as Limnos says, they live in directories that don't get searched.

/usr/sbin/update Lossage After 10.4.3 install
I just moved from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 on my G5 (dual, 2.0ghz; I used CCC to clone my 10.3.9 boot disk to a firewire drive and did a clean install. I migrated applications and user settings only. The install was of 10.4 and I immediately did a software update to 10.4.3 using the Combo update. Relatively immediately, my console started to get this message:
Jan 1 17:42:43 Duende /usr/sbin/update: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, " C˚^?¸?¸?¸?˝_¸/¯'‡ ".
This repeats every 30 seconds because this (update) is the daemon that writes the internal file system cache back to memory (every 30 seconds). Looking at the string by copying and pasting to the terminal, it is:
" C\313\232^?\302\270?\302\270?\302\270?\313\235_\302\270/\302\257'\342\200\241 "
(I'm supposing this is some unicode string, but I don't know whether it's supposed to be a file name or some internal structure or what.)
My PB running 10.4.3 with roughly a clone of the above system doesn't have the problem.
I did the usual:
* disk utility
* fsck -fy (from safe-mode boot)
Initially, Disk Utility reported 2 "illegal names" which it fixed when booted from the install DVD. (I even tried the idea I read of it being wacky file names in the Adobe CS2 Legal directories and deleting the wacky ones).
The system appears to run ok otherwise, so the real problem I guess is the size of the logs and the messiness of looking for other stuff in them.
Any ideas?

Dual G5 2ghz Mac OS X (10.4.3) 8gb ram, 2 250 gb ATA drives
Dual G5 2ghz Mac OS X (10.4.3) 8gb ram, 2 250 gb ATA drivesWhen the Migration Assistant (which I think is what the Setup Assistant uses) asked me on first boot in 10.4 whether I wanted to migrate from an existing computer, it found the firewire disk I had cloned to. As best I know, Target Disk Mode just makes the other computer a firewire drive.
Also, since your note, I booted from the firewire clone of 10.3.9 and it worked just fine. So, I think this is not the problem.
I think it would be easier to somehow figure out where the bad string is coming from. I'm guessing it's a unicode filename that is not UTF-8, just like it says. There seems to be a lot of non-Roman file names around, and I've seen threads where Adobe CS2 has created some some have caused problems for Tiger, so I'm guess it's a similar thing.
The logs give a hint, the string is this:
C˚^?¸?¸?¸?˝_¸/¯'‡
But this is a mapping from what the string really is to what can be represented in the log.
However, if after a while I can't figure it out, I'll do another erase and install and reload things by hand. What makes me hesitate is that I have a wiki which is kind of a mess to install afresh. -
Understanding the /usr/sbin merge
I can understand why merging the bin and sbin directories under /usr, but I don't understand why the need to merge /usr/sbin into /usr/bin. If you are looking at things where you may have a single user desktop scenario, then it can make sense as the user and the admin would be the same person. If, however, you are wanting to be running it as a multi-user, with clearly defined sets of users and superusers, then why complicate matters for normal users by throwing in a large number of binaries into their path that they won't be able to run anyway? The point could be made that 'they could access them anyway' and whilst that is true, the fact that they are in a seperate directory means you know these utilities require escalated privileges or are most likely used for system administration.
WonderWoofy wrote:I think that you would find a happy home with something like debian. Stability and relatively few bugs are what they are known for.
I found a happy home with gentoo. A bit less 'at bleeding edge', but rock solid and much more stable than arch.
But I need arch for some temporary goals.
Allan wrote:It is amazing that despite wantonly creating new bugs and ignoring the old ones, the number of bug reports in our bug tracker is quite stable over time...
I can explain this miracle: when something (package for example) was marked as 'irrelevant' and discarded from repo, all the bugs that relative to this package dropped as well. Instead of old bugs we getting a new 'bleeding edge' bugs. So the number of bugs remains approximately constant. -

What shell script found in /usr/sbin and /usr/bin in OS X made out off?
thanks. You may have to provide more detail on what you're wanting to know if this doesn't answer your question.
Shell scripts are just text files. You can create or open them with any text editor. They are executed by one of the command interpreters (such as sh, bash, csh, etc) or by a language interpreter (like perl or ruby). However, many of the items in the directories you mention are not shell scripts but rather binary executables. These are executed by the OS.
You can use something like this to show you which are which:

Solaris 10 06/06 x86 install Unable to run cmd: /usr/sbin/sysidput
Hello,
When I install Solaris 10 06/06 on my x86 machine, I follow all of the prompts. Eventually , I get to a place in the X Windows GUI where I enter my IP, netmask, Router IP, DNS server IPs, domain, and search list.
I get an error at the end of th network configuration section.
runCmd error in /usr/sbin/sysidput with output:
Unable to run cmd: /usr/sbin/sysidput
No sysidcfg found.
I found my sysidcfg at /etc/sysidcfg. everytime I try to create a file or copy a file over to /usr/sbin. I get a read only error. I am logged in as root..
/etc is not my $PATH. Is that the problem? Do special commands exist to put it in the path?
Please help. I have not used UNIX in two years. I not know Solaris Administration.
Does a newer DVD exist with the fix already done?
Thank you very much.
Andre Mikulec
[email protected]This is a known issue. Do not configure the network at the time of OS installation. Select NON-Networked and continue,
Once you are done with the installation, run sys-unconfig and you will be able to configure the network.

[SOLVED] cronie reports "/usr/sbin/run-cron: No such file or directory
Hi, I just made a fresh install of Arch Linux x86_64 on my PC and I'm having troubles with cronie.
cronie emails say:
/bin/sh: /usr/sbin/run-cron: No such file or directory
In crond.log I have:
Jan 2 22:01:01 localhost /USR/SBIN/CROND[4691]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly)
Jan 2 22:47:56 localhost /usr/sbin/crond[5529]: (CRON) STARTUP (1.4.8)
Jan 2 22:47:56 localhost /usr/sbin/crond[5529]: (CRON) INFO (Syslog will be used instead of sendmail.): No such file or directory
Jan 2 22:47:56 localhost /usr/sbin/crond[5529]: (CRON) INFO (running with inotify support)
Jan 2 22:47:56 localhost /usr/sbin/crond[5529]: (CRON) INFO (@reboot jobs will be run at computer's startup.)
Jan 2 23:00:01 localhost /USR/SBIN/CROND[5733]: (root) CMD (ID=sys-hourly /usr/sbin/run-cron /etc/cron.hourly)
Jan 2 23:00:01 localhost /USR/SBIN/CROND[5732]: (root) CMDOUT (/bin/sh: /usr/sbin/run-cron: No such file or directory)
Jan 2 23:01:01 localhost /USR/SBIN/CROND[5748]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly)
I've changed very little of the configuration files provided with the package: root's crontab is completely empty, and cron.hourly only contains the original untouched 0anacron file.
I have the same basic setup on another machine and I don't have such errors.
Any hints?
Thanks

Seems that file is provided by other cron implementations. -
Sun Studio 12 - Optimal $PATH order - /usr/ucb - /usr/sbin - etc.
Hello,
I recently had trouble with compiling and installing code related to the order of various Solaris 10 directories in my $PATH. For example, /usr/ucb/install worked, /use/sbin/install did not. What is the recommended order of the following directories in the $PATH env. variable:
/usr/ucb/
/usr/sbin/
/usr/sfw/bin
/usr/csw/bin
/usr/ccs/bin
Obviously, one order will not suit all code, but what is the most common order of the above directories that will work most of the time with Sun Studio as well as just make and gmake outside of the IDE? In other words, if there are duplicate executables in the directories, which ones should be found and used first? I have added the above to my PATH piecemeal over time, so I am not sure what the default order should be. Maybe there is no good answer to this question, but...
Thank you in advance!I always put /usr/ccs/bin first just in case - there are several development tools there (make is most important example) which are (or might be) different from GNU implementations with the same name. And I usually have to use Sun implementation when I'm on Solaris.
I also always put /usr/ucb at the end because it tends to have stubs for compiler drivers that get in the way saying "compiler not installed".
Can't say anything specific about the rest of directories, the order you specified in your post seems reasonable enough. -
Hi Gurus.
Please help in this one.
When I try to use tar the following output is displayed:

tar xvf 123.tar
ld.so.1: tar: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/sbin/tar: symbol fchownat: referenced symbol not found

Check output ldd:

Output of: LD_LIBRARY_PATH
echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
/usr/lib:/usr/dt/lib:/opt/app/lib
already try unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH
Any ideas.
I can tell You that tar was working fine 2 months ago.
I suspect data corruption
Many thanks
AllrounderHi,
Is Vi functional on your system? If you havent already tried this you may want to try removing /usr/ucb/lib from LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, or put /usr/lib in LD_LIBRARY_PATH before /usr/ucblib. This might clear up some of the problems you are having.

Andrew
