UTFDataFormatException in JOLT buffer

I would appreciate some tips on how to track down the cause to my problems with
fetching certain strings from my database from my Java client using Tuxedo and
JOLT.
When reading a certain 380 characters long string from the database, the client
crashes, and I get the following message in my Java console:
"bea.jolt.ServiceException: bea.jolt.JoltRemoteService(ServiceName).decodeCALL()
bea.jolt.MessageException: bea.jolt.BufException: java.io.UTFDataFormatException
     at bea/jolt/JoltRemoteService.decodeCALL
     at bea/jolt/JoltRemoteService.call"
I have tried to find faulty characters by fetching various substrings of the string,
but only the substring with characters 1 to 379 or the entire 380 characters long
string seems to cause the problem. A substring with, for instance, characters
350 to 380 does not cause any error.
I have tested my service with UD32, and it works fine. The problem seems to be
at the JOLT level. Although the string was once written using the client, it is
not possible to regenerate the error by writing the exact same string via the
keyboard into my client. I cannot see any illegal characters when looking at the
string using SQL commands.
When looking in the JOLT API, I only get some information about the MessageException.
The BufException is not visible in the API documentation. Why is that?
Please, could someone help? Where can I look for the cause to this problem?
Thank You!

Hi,
I'm not sure where you are wanting to check the buffer. If it is on the Jolt side, i.e., Java client side, then you get use the JoltMessage class accessors to find out what is in the buffer. On the Tuxedo side (JSL/JSH side) the handling of the buffers is done by C code, not Java and the protocol is not documented. There is no code in the JSH that does what you want, as it doesn't process the buffer in the same format as the Java side.
Can you explain a little more about what it is you are trying to accomplish?

    Save yourself alot of pain and ditch the RE applet and use the jolt repository

    Since the RE is an applet, it had to adhere to the sandbox restrictions.
    Specifically, it can't connect to a remote machine, unless the remote

    Either run it using appletviewer on the machine where the JSL is running,

    This is what I have found to be the problem in 90% of such cases...

    The reason for creating a new repository file is to incorporate all the new services which are included in multiple servers which comprise the application.

  • Problem with Jolt Repository Editing

    Greetings to all,
    I am suffering with a problem.A deficit of knowledge.
    Here it is:
    Our applications are running on Solaris 10 and Tuxedo 11gr1. If i need to add service in Jolt Repository how do I do it?
    All I have access to server is via a Putty Terminal (black screen console) and we have a jolt repository file which I do not understand completely.
    It has lines like this :
    add PKG/GETFLTSCHDFRI01: I think this is a package.
    add SVC/GETFLTSCHDFRI01: I think this is service declaration.
    bt=FML32:ex=1:BT=FML32:vs=3:bp:pf=167772161:po=1:
    pn=DATA:pa=rw:pt=string:ep:bp:pf=167772162:po=1:\
    pn=END_USER:pa=rw:pt=string:ep:bp:pf=167772163:po=1:
    pn=SERVICE_NAME:pa=rw:pt=string:ep:
    What I could interpret/guess is -
    bt - buffer type.
    ex - No idea
    BT - buffer type. why twice?
    pn is parameter name for service GETFLTSCHDFRI01.It has 3 of them.
    pt is parameter type.
    pa - parameter access permissions .
    ep - No idea
    bp - No idea
    pf -  No idea
    po - No idea
    add SVC/.GETSVC:vs=1:ex=0:bt=FML32:bp:
    pn=REPNAME:pt=string:pf=167772161:pa=wr:ep:bp:pn=REPVALUE:pt=string:pf=167772162:pa=rd:ep:bp:

    Is there any way to understand this file completely and manually edit it to add a new service?

  • Jolt and Asynchronous calls

    We are currently using Jolt 1.2 connected to a Tuxedo 6.5 system on Solaris.
    We are porting a Windows thick application to browser. We call a Tuxedo
    service
    with the old system that takes around 10 minutes to complete. We obviously
    call this
    asynchronously. When we call this same service using Jolt it "times-out".
    Which makes
    sense since Jolt 1.2 seems to only allow synchronous ( aka
    Request-Response ) calls.
    I have looked at the documentation for Jolt 1.2, 1.2.1, the Jolt with Tuxedo
    7.1 and Tuxedo 8 and
    I cannot find an ability to make a Asynchronous call. However, I did find
    it in the API documentation
    for the Jolt that comes with Weblogic Enterprise 5.1 and above? Are these
    APIs available without
    Weblogic Enterprise? Is there a special Jolt add-on package?

    Thank you very much. That is exactly what our engineers came up with
    to get around this. The problem is that we have no ability to be notified
    when this async service is finished. In our old application we would lock
    the window manually (windows api) and run a loop doing getReplies until
    the async returned a buffer. With a browser model, it probably isn't
    possible
    without having an applet or something. It just rubs me raw that the API I
    need
    for Jolt isn't supplied when you BUY JOLT, but only if you buy the
    SUPER-EXPENSIVE
    Weblogic Enterprise. Why have a Jolt product to begin with if you do not
    supply the whole
    functionality needed to merge Java and Tuxedo, which is the supposedly the
    product's goal?

  • Problem with Tuxedo buffer

    Hi,
    I have 2 applications that are connected to Tuxedo.
    The first have a VB client and the second a java client (with WebLogic and jolt).
    The first don't have any problems.
    With the second, when I call a Tuxedo service that return a lot

    I don't know exactly what is the problem.
    What do you think of it ?

    David,
    Where is the error reported (in the java client, in the JSH, in the server process?)
    What is the error?
    Is there anything in any of your ULOG files?

  • JOLT  logging options and length of the parameter names?

    Hi!
    We are having a problem with one Tuxedo service and testing it with JOLT repository
    editor.
    The problem:
    Every parameter seems to be OK and the file is loaded OK by bulk loader(Checked even
    the service code).
    In testing the Tuxedo service, we get following error in the log of the remote domain:
    ?proc.12070: TX: ca_apl_serv: Field 169772545, occurrence 0 not
    present in input buffer.
    Context:
    File: tx_ft_core.cxx
    Line: 925
    Txft log with level 10 reveals that the @FIELD=NULL, but we have put correct values
    in the repository editor. And the first parameter gets a correct value, but the next
    one doesn't.
    Is there any limits for lenght of the parameter name in JOLT? Both parameters are
    36 characters long.
    Is there any logging or tracing options for JOLT to see what could cause the failure?
    We are using JOLT 1.2.
    We have succeeded to make some other services to work, but this one is a bit of mystery

  • URGENT:How to fetch a carray in an FML Buffer?

    Hi All,
    I am using an FML Buffer to transfer the data between the Tuxedo(6.5) and JOLT.
    I am clueless about 'carray' in the FML buffer. How to fetch that in my class?
    the Sample Code is below:
    In JOLT: ( setting the carray in the FML buffer)
    byte[] data;
              DataInputStream din;
              DataOutputStream dout;
              ByteArrayInputStream bin;
              ByteArrayOutputStream bout;
              bout = new ByteArrayOutputStream(512);
              dout = new DataOutputStream(bout);
              dout.writeInt(100);
              dout.writeFloat((float) 300.00);
              dout.writeUTF("Hello World");
              dout.writeShort((short) 88);
              data = bout.toByteArray();
    passFml = new JoltRemoteService("PASSFML",session);
         JoltTransaction trans=new JoltTransaction( 1000,session );
         passFml.setBytes("INPUTCARRAY", data, data.length);
    passFml.call(null);
    So I am making a byte array as above and setting that in the Buffer for an FLDID
    "INPUTCARRAY".
    In the C++ part,
    I have FBFR* svcInfo already in the place. My other Fget operations ( on String,short
    and int etc) are working fine.
    Test.cpp:
    ptr = tpalloc("CARRAY",NULL,1024);
    fmlPtr->getCarrayFML(INPUTCARRAY,ptr);
    FMLBuffer.cpp:
    void FMLBuffer::getCarrayFML(FLDID f,char* ptr)
    FLDLEN lenX ;
    if(Fget(svcInfo,f,0,ptr,&lenX) < 0)
    (void)userlog("Fget of Carray failed %s", Fstrerror(Ferror));
    tpreturn(TPFAIL, 0, rq->data, 0L, 0);
    ptr[23]='\0';
    cout<<"ptr is "<<ptr<<endl;
    but ptr is coming blank. I tried using CFget,Ffind and CFfind, but they didn't work.
    Can anybody pls suggest me that how to fetch a carray's value inside the C++ program?

    Hi Ramya,
    if you want to see the result it should run first.
    after adding abap program to process chain, activate it.
    now right click on process chain start --> display variant --> change selection.
    check what is the start condition, if it is nto in immediate then comback
    click on edit --> change selection
    select immediate --> unchek the periodic values. and save. come back
    again click on save. come back.
    now schedule your process chain by clikc on clock symbol.
    after successfull completion of your process chain you can check in SE16

  • JOLT perfomance issues

    Recently we have been moving functionality from native Tuxedo clients to
    JOLT access (weblogic).
    In testing the native Tuxedo client, moving an FML buffer containing
    30000+ elements takes < 2 seconds (transmission time only).
    I have been running into problems using jolt trying to retrieve large
    amounts of data. Testing against a server that simply builds an FML
    buffer with data, I have been able to compile some run times that display
    the JOLT shortcomings. (BTW - timing includes the FML build time up to
    30000+ pieces of data = 1 sec).
    FML Field Type Pieces of Data JOLT
    pack/send/unpack time
    ============ ============ ========================
    integer 0 - 3000 2 seconds
    or less
    integer 5000 5 seconds
    integer 10000 15 seconds
    integer 15000 34 seconds
    integer 20000 60 seconds
    integer 25000 92 seconds
    integer 30000 beyond 2 minutes
    string 0 - 3000 2 seconds
    or less
    string 5000 6 seconds
    string 10000 16 seconds
    string 15000 37 seconds
    string 20000 65 seconds
    string 25000 97 seconds
    string 30000 beyond 2 minutes
    of course, there are several things about this data you may have questions
    about - I will try to circumvent them here: By mixing the two types
    together in an FML buffer, the timing is simply stuck somewhere between
    the two different times. By altering the way that the FML Fields are
    represented in the FML buffer, you can save overall FML data length and
    total number of bytes transmitted (lessoning network traffic), but the
    saved network traffic on a strong network shows minimal improvement. It
    appears that the string FML type requires slightly more evaluation
    overhead.
    These numbers may look rediculous to be sending through JOLT to a web app
    of some kind, but say you are retrieving database data that would return a
    possible 1000 rows that contain maybe 15 fields in each row - you are
    quickly up to 15000 FML elements, and over 30 seconds for JOLT to move the
    data. THAT IS 30 SECONDS ON TOP OF WHATEVER TIME IT TAKES TO RETIEVE THE
    DATA FROM THE DATABASE......
    I present all of this data so that I may ask the following questions:
    Does anyone out there know if there is any method of tuning JOLT? BEA
    provides no documentation at all beyond installation/configuration.
    Is this just a shortcoming of JOLT being a Java product?
    Does the latest version of JOLT have any performance upgrades?
    Thanks In Advance...

    Brett,
    It would be great if you could sign up for the WTC Beta (advertised in a
    prior posting), and compare the measurements.
    Could you tell me what machine types you were using? Also, make sure
    that you were not exceeding the IPC limitations on the TUXEDO side, as
    this would add a lot of additional overhead (but it would be for both
    Jolt and TUXEDO).

  • Embedded FML32 buffers and JOLT

    How do you create an embedded FML32 buffer using JOLT? Do I do use the addMessage
    method, like this...
    JoltMessage inbuf = myJoltRemoteService.getInputs();
    JoltMessage embeddedBuffer = new JoltMessage;
    embeddedBuffer.addString( "CLASS_NAME", "test" );
    inbuf.addMessage( "EMBEDDED_BUFFER", embeddedBuffer );

    I was afraid you would say that. So it's not possible to call tuxedo services
    using embedded FML32 buffers from a java program not running inside of weblogic.
    This is going to blow the plans we had of using embedded FML32.

    c. Will the cycle time be less if WTC is used instead of Jolt?Our system uses 1500+ Tuxedo services (written in COBOL), so we've seen the
    same issues.
    You have to use the repository, but don't rely on the RE applet. We only
    use the bulkloader and generate the load file with a Perl program. [In
    fact, the applet always crashes for us because it can't deal with >255
    fields in a VIEW32 buffer). The batch upload runs on our fastest server
    machine (1.4+ GHz Intel). WTC looks like a good bet to reduce development
    time, and we are planning on using it in the future.

  • Using RealPlayer (dialup) - How can I give N/W preference to it's buffer?

    4-25-06
    Is there a "safe" way to configure the machine so that "1st preference"
    is given to keeping the RealPlayer buffer full (listening to radio stream)?
    I use 56Kb dialup and don't mind slowing down e.g. Safari etc but don't
    want the radio stream to be interrupted.
    Have UDP ports 7070-7071 opened in Sys Pref's and tell RealPlayer to
    use them. I also buffer 500 seconds in RealPlayer. Still, it's buffer gets
    empty (stream is at 20+ Kbps and modem is at about 45+ Kbps).
    Maybe there is a better forum to post this at discussions?

  • Issue with running QuickTime Windows.  Buffer Overrun Error - C++ Library .

    Initial problem was Buffer Overrun Error (C++ Library) when clicking on QuickTime after installation. IE. QT would not even open. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831875#appliesto
    I took these steps:
    1. Tried to uninstall QuickTime by itself (it failed).
    2.
    3. Manually deleted apple, itunes and quicktime from the entire system (where ever it let me).
    4.
    5. Manually took out from the registration the apple stuff.
    6.
    7. Left the items in the recycle bin (in case there were any real issues and I needed something restored).
    8.
    9. Performed a registration cure (RegCure).
    10.
    11. Took off my entire Anti Virus.
    12.
    13. Dropped down separately the QuickTime and separately the iTunes on desktop.
    14.
    15. Tried to install QuickTime from one of the two saved files on my desktop, but encountered a serious fault
    16.
    17. It needed the QuickTime Installer to remove QuickTime itself, else it crapped out and nothing happened. This complained for a QuickTime.msi file which was a problem.
    18.
    19. Went to the recycle bin and restored only components which were marked QuickTime Installer.
    Removed the QuickTime instead of Repair.
    Went to the website and Installed QuickTime 7 directly.
    It opened on the desktop after installation.
    Installed iTunes separately from the desktop and it opened directly.
    Rebooted my pc.
    Enabled all my Security (McAFee).
    Opened one by one the QuickTime and Then the iTunes.
    Created a computer restore point with a narrative for the future.
    This was a very difficult task and required a lot of steps. I am glad you helped me with the removing part. Its great to have everything working again on my pc.
    I hope this was helpful - it took me ageges to fix.

    I'm experiencing exactly the same bug. Matter of fact, it's the first time in years that I've run across this kind of 'problem' when using non-beta software from a major player. Too bad. This really reflects poorly on Apple's credibility.

    I am getting buffer busy waits on some tables.
    Users are not experiencing any problem.Looks like you got bit by the CTD troll while sleeping.
    Note also that (if I'm reading the report alright) out of 23 mins you have 6 seconds accounted to buffer busy waits.
    Read the sample chapter here.
