Utilities says my base station is "at default setting"

I really had a hard time this afternoon messing with the network, all is well except MY airport utility says that the base station is yellow(in fact the express is green) and says it is in its default settings. My other computers in the house show a green icon and normal utility verbage.
The network is working fine. How can I fix this?

Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the amber dot on the summary page and a window will open explaining the reason for the amber light.
It may be a notification that a firmware update is available for your device.
If not, what does the message say?

You already have the software installed that you need if you have 10.8.2.
If AirPort Utility cannot find the Express, that is another matter. More software is not needed. More troublehooting is needed.
Power up the Express for a full minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 7-8 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a heading of New AirPort Base Station
Just below that, click on AirPort Express

Airport utility no longer recognizes my Airport Extreme Base Station, which had been set up to extend a wifi network

Hi. In November I set up my airport extreme base station (5th generation I believe) to wirelessly extend the wifi network we use at home to see if it would increase download speeds. Before doing that, I did a factory reset of my airport extreme, and the owner of the airport extreme to which the ethernet cable is attached made changes to his network to allow it to be extended. I folllowed all the directions from the apple support pages, and finally got it to work. I could even access a portable hard drive which I attached to the airport extreme base station being used as the extension. Then a week or so ago I noticed that my laptop would no longer connect to my base station. I did not have time to look into it until this week. Airport utility, either on my Mac or iphone no longer recognizes my base station. My mac is running OS X 10.10.1 and my iPhone is running iOS 8.1.2 I have tried both hard, soft and factory resets of my base station to no avail. The only thing that has changed after doing that, is that when I do a soft reset of my base station, a neighbors airport express appears when it never did before. I can't actually connect to it, but it does try. Then after approximately 5 minutes, it disappears from my list.
Today I went and pulled out my OLD AIRPORT EXTREME base station... you know, the one that looks like a space ship and is running wifi 802.1 b/c? airport utility DOES locate and display that, but airport utility returns a message stating that it cannot be set up by this software. I am attaching an image of that.

Does this have anything to do with the fact that 'Back to My Mac' is probably enabled?

I think the initial problem is that your iPhone was connected to an open network that wasn't yours.
Go to Settings > WiFi and "Forget" the network created by that AirPort Extreme, it's older than dirt. Forget your neighbor's network also.
Perform the equivalent actions with your Mac: System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced... Delete every network that appears, including your own.
Then, connect to your own network on all your devices, after which you ought to be able to use any of them and configure your Extreme without any difficulty. You may need to start over with a "hard reset" on both the main AirPort Extreme and the one extending its network.

Not exactly, but using iCloud Keychain will populate all your devices with the names of preferred networks that any of them connect to, no matter where they are. I don't know why Apple considers that a beneficial feature.

Swap out which is base station in 2 extreme set up

Hi. I have two extremes. One is the base station and connected (wired) to the cable modem the other acts as a wireless signal booster for the other half of the house (non wired). My issue is this the base station has only two of the three available ports going out available (lightening fried the other). The wireless one has all 3 ports available. My son wants to connect his xbox to the base station (via wire) my computer needs to be connected to the base station (wired) and our World book is connected to the base station. He constantly unplugs my wired computer connection for his xbox. A major inconvienience since they are top floor and basement away from each other. Can I just swap out the location of the two extremes for each other (so the one with all 3 ports working is the base unit) or will I need to reconfigure them in order to do this? If I need to reconfigure them do I just copy over the setting from one to the other? Thanks for the help.

You can swap the AiPort Extremes, but both of them will need to be completely re-configured....quite a chore.
If all you really need are more Ethernet ports, it would be simple matter to add a 5-port Ethernet switch to one of the Ethernet ports on the "main" AirPort Extreme to create more connection capability.
Any computer / electronics superstore will have what you need. Something like this, for example:

Just connect an Ethernet cable from one of the working ports on the AirPort Extreme to the switch. Now you have 4 available Ethernet ports for devices. If you need even more connections, you can buy an 8-port switch, 16-port switch, etc.

Airport express base station A1034

hi all
I bought a used airport express base station, the old one, because I love it's style, but I have a problem. I don't know how to setup my internet connection, how to even configure my router.
I tried to install the software, but it gives me a message saying that "the software on your mac is a newer version". well I started the 'AirPort Utility' and found the router, but after one hour waiting to 'retrieve the configuration from the router' I've got an error message that 'cannot retrieve the configuration'!!! Now I don't know what should I do. I started thinking about the 'enabler' software, but I'm not sure it will help.
by the way, I have a DSL connection via the PHONE!! my router is speedtouch. there is a port which I connect a phone like cable to it. and then it connects to the internet. how to do the same thing in the airport express?!?!?! there is a WAN port which says connect to DSL or ... , but my DSL is over the phone not WAN.
any help would be great.

If you have a speedtouch router then you only need to use the airport base station as a wireless access point and switch.
First off I would reset your base station to factory defaults. see Resetting the AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet) or Resetting the AirPort Base Station (Graphite)
Then connect the base station to one of the network ports on your speedtouch router using a cat5 network cable.
Then connect your mac to one of the network ports on the base station. Then run the Airport Utiltiy in your Utilities folder.
Then you can use the assistant.

That's all I need. A series of simple, step-by-step 'how-to's'.
I've been using Macs for almost 20 years, but find the instruction manual and software for the new Airport Utility [AEBSn device] to be particularly unhelpful.
I need to add an AX to extend the range of my network [and be able to use my brand-new printer]. The software seems to be instructing me to, "change base stations"? Why? The older Airport Admin Utility [supplied with AX's] did not use such counter-intuitive instructions and was much simpler to set up multiple base stations. What gives Apple?
Give it to me simple Apple, my brain cells aren't getting any brighter! Is there anyone out there that can post simple step-by-step instructions? I'm sure I won't be the only one appreciating that kind gesture.

Airport Extreme Base station + Relay Inquiry

My Airport Express Base station died on me so I replaced it with an Airport Extreme. I immediately noticed the lack of wds support and a simplified network setup option.
So I updated all my other relay stations to the newer network(Airport Express btw).
I found that the Ethernet connections weren't functioning anymore. Why?
To make it clear, I'm trying to connect a non-wireless computer to my wireless network through a relay station.

Blinking yellow - can't find base station - tried everything!!!

Last night I decided to change my network from WPA to WEP so that my nintendo DS could hook up through wifi (nintendo wifi website told me to change it to WEP to connect). Once I changed it, the base station rebooted. It came back with the evil blinking yellow light.
I open up airport utility and it cannot find a base station anywhere. "AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort base stations. Please make sure the AirPort base station you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then rescan to try again."
- I unplugged the base station and plugged it back in. did this a billion times
- Rebooted my macbook. also did this a billion times
- Went through troubleshooting which kept telling me to just choose the base station to see what was wrong with it - HELLO...I can't choose the base station because it won't come up!
- Then I did a hard reset of the base station. Pressing in the reset button for the amount of time - but it says that it will start blinking green. But mine just started blinking yellow really fast. Then it reset. After starting back up - it went back to the slow blinking yellow. And my airport utility still can't find the base station.
- Then I tried the factory default reset. By unplugging it, pressing in the reset button and plugging it back in while keeping the button pressed and held it for a while. I still got not blinking green light that trouble shoot told me I would have.
I just got this thing about 2 months ago! Please someone help my computer find my base station!

hooking up the ethernet cord to the Airport and to the macbook did the trick. Then I unhooked it and it still detected it. I was excited.
It was time to configure it, so I tried to set it to WEP again so my Nintendo DS could connect. As soon as I configured it and the AirPort restarted, it was gone again.
I had to do a hard restart again and then I had to hook up the ethernet cord again. The whole process all over again, tried WEP again....still died.
So I did the whole process with hard restart and ethernet cord AGAIN. This time I configured to WPA2 and it connected on up to the internet with no probs. Yay!
But it still leaves me not being able to hook up my Nintendo DS. Is there no way of configuring my AirPort to WEP????

Using both Airport Extreme Base Station and Airport Express

I am using a Airport Extreme and a AX, my goal is to use the base unit on one floor of the home and they AX as an extender.
I have linked the AX unit to join the existing network, now how to do I enable WEP 128 bit?

How do I clone my computer's MAC address on to the AE base station?

This is just driving me nuts. I've looked at responses to this question on the internet, and it appears that the Airport Extreme Base Station can't perform a function that nearly all WAN home routers have been able to perform for a decade: "cloning" a MAC Address. My internet provider uses the MAC address of one of my computers to identify a valid connection, and my old Belkin router just cloned the computer's MAC address. If the AEBS can't do that then it's a rather serious design flaw, and if I'd known that I'd never have bought the device. I noticed that there's something called a "Client ID" so I input my computer's MAC Address for that, but the Base Station still can't connect to the internet.
I don't want to have my ISP reset my valid MAC address (even if they could, which isn't clear to me) because I may need to connect to the internet directly in the event of problems... say the Base Station malfunctions.
I bought the base station so that I could connect peripherals to it, but if it can't connect to the internet that renders it practically useless.
Are there any workarounds? Anyone have any ideas?

I can see that no one is bothering to respond to this question, so I thought I'd post a resolution. I don't know if one can alter the ID of the AE Base by cloning a computer's MAC address. The next best thing would be to easily alter the MAC address that the ISP identifies as legitimate. If you have COMCAST's telephone modem (which has a battery backup so that it can't be rebooted by simply unplugging it) you can adopt the following procedure to reset the MAC address.
1. Reset the base station, by depressing the reset button in back with a pen or paper clip.
2. Unplug the base station.
3. Reset the Comcast cable modem, by depressing the reset button in the back with a pen or paper clip.
4. Plug the base station back in.
5. Use the Airport Utility to set the parameters of Airport Extreme.
This procedure will force COMCAST to recognize the Base Station MAC Address as legitimate for provisioning.
It's not an ideal solution, but it works. If the Base Station fails and you have to use a direct connection to your computer you can follow a similar procedure to reset the modem, and recognize a new MAC address.
Again, the fact that you can't use the Base-connected drives for Time Machine is just plain dumb. Apple originally touted this as one of their main selling points, and then just backtracked. They need to reintroduce this functionality in the next update of Leopard... and it wouldn't hurt to issue an apology for having misled people. The stone wall just ****** people off, as it should.

Windows XP lost connection to airport extreme base station

I had a perfect connection after setting up my Airport Extreme with my Mac Book Pro and my HP laptop and one HP desktop then when trying repair media center. I did install the airport utility in XP but when trying to scan it cannot pick up my base station. It worked perfect before now I am at a hold and I don't know what direction to take.
Some questions.
How do I find the IP address on my Airport?
Do I need to create a new wireless network since the airport utility does not pick up the base station?
When I search available networks on the PC why doesn't mine show up?
Can someone point out the steps to take to get this crappy PC back on the internet, oh by the way it's my wife's and now she's on mine and I need to get her back on hers ASAP!

The default LAN-side IP address of the AirPort/Time Capsule is: 10.0.1.1.

You shouldn't have to. Assuming that the base station is still providing a wireless network, you should be able to access it with the AirPort Utility. To do so, run the utility, and then, select File > Configure Other ... from the utility's menu bar. Enter 10.0.1.1 in the Address window and the Base Station Password in the Password window. If you did not change the Base Station Passwork, the default is "public."
If you are still unable to access the base station via the utility, then try temporarily connecting an Ethernet cable between the computer and the base station ... and then, try accessing it again.

Apple Base Station Connection/Recognition Problem

I have just purchased a Airport base station to use as a replacement for another router which has died. I have gone through the set-up routine, double and triple checked my connections and despite it all, I cannot connect to the Internet nor can I reestablish a wireless network within my home. All the lights on the base station are appropriately lit as per the manual. When I connect my internet connection directly to my iMac I have no problem accessing the Net.
My iMac does not appear to recognize the base station. Can anyone give me any troubleshooting tips as to how I can reestablish my wireless network and also connect my iMac directly to the Net. It should not be so much trouble to do so with all Apple equipment.

Gary as you say it shouldn't be this much of a problem with all Apple equipment.
However sometimes after doing one thing or another you will need to do a system reset to make it work.
Normally you simply connect from the Modem they furnised you to the WAN port on an Airport Extreme Base station that is the port with the circle of dots, and the port with the 2 arrows pointing away from one another is for plugging in a hardwired computer.
It should be set up for the Airport to DHCP and it should assign IP's
Most of us that use the Airport Extreme or Express Base Stations use the Airport Set-up Assistant and Airport Admin Utility Software that comes with your Mac with Airport technology.
Often times if your confiquration is correct, and if you have a Power blip or you loose the connection there is a correct way to reset your system when about all else fails, and that is first turn off your computer.
Next pull the Power adapter from the back of both your Modem and the Airport Base.
Next is normally the hardest part because when this happens we are normally mad enough to throw it all out the window from jacking with it for an hour or 2.
You have to wait at least 5 minutes.
After your wait.
Plug in the power adapter to the Modem and wait until it reaquires the signal and depending on the modem they furnished you want 3 lights from left to right.
After you get this far and all looks ok you can plug in the Power Adapter to the Airport Base and again you must wait for the lights and signal, this will also take about a minute. NOTE: If you get in to big a hurry and don't let the equipment do it's work you will have to repeat to get it to work properly.
Now that you have both of these up and running you can restart your computer. This is the recommended reset by almost all Modem and Router Manufactures.
You should be good to go.

Airport Express Network won't play music from Base Station and remote spkrs

Is there any way i can hook up speakers to the base statino and the remote speakers? I am getting a message that says the base station is not configured to play music as part of the group. it says I can play music from base station, but not simultaneously with the living room speakers which i have set up on a repeater airport express.

Well, I can choose multiple speakers, "living room" and "computer," and they play out of both, but it will not play from multiple speakers if I include the base station, which is hooked up to speakers in my office. The base station will only play if I choose it exclusively, and I wondered if there was something i needed to do to configure the base station to enable it to play as well.

Can't configure Snow Base Station - error updating configuration.

I recently found a cheap Airport Snow Base Station to use on a trip I'm taking next week. I'll be at a lake house with no broadband, only dial-up capability. I thought if I could at least go wireless, it would be more bearable, so I got the Snow Base Station since my Express nor my Extreme Base Station have modems.
I downloaded the Airport Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow, and did a hard reset on the base station. It shows up in the utility as 00-03- etc. with IP address of 192.42.249.13. When I click Configure, it says the base station has been reset and is currently not configured. I click OK to upload software to the base station, it asks for my administrator password then after about 12 seconds, it comes back and says "An error occurred while updating the configuration."
Any suggestions? It's connected via ethernet to the LAN port, it says the base station version is currently 4.0.2.

I've managed to resolve the error code by the following:
1. Turn Off Airport Card
2. Unplug Power Cable to Time Capsule
3. Disconnect Ethernet Cables
4. Wait 30secs
5. Plug in Power Cable to Time Capsule and allow unit to power up.
6. Connect via Ethernet to the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule
7. Airport Utility should know locate, but importantly allow you access to configure Manual set-up

Graphite base station not working with my Intel Based Mac Mini and iPhone.

My Airport Express died after 2 years of use. I had to resort to plugging in my old but still functioning Graphite Airport base station. Since the set up assisant on my Mac mini does not work with the older base station, I used my G4 400 tower to set it up. I got it working and tested the connection. On to testing my iPhone. It sees the new network. Password is entered and the wifi icon shows full signal strength, but does not connect to the web. Next I try my Mac mini out on the new network and it too sees the network, but does not connect to the web. I double check the older G4 and the connection is still strong and fast. I shut the G4 down thinking that maybe the Graphite can only support one computer at a time, and the Mac mini and iPhone still can't connect to the web. I'm not sure what to do with this one. Is there a setting that I need to use? As far as security goes, the Graphite base station was set up with a WEP password. Any help would be great

I suggest using AirPort Admin Utility (version 4.2) to check the base station settings and change them, if necessary. (AirPort Admin Utility should be able to configure a Graphite base station from a computer running Mac OS X 10.4, even though AirPort Setup Assistant can't.)
In the Network pane of AirPort Admin Utility, please make sure that "Distribute IP addresses" and "Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT)" are checked, and that everything else is unchecked. I am assuming that the Graphite is the only router in your local network and that there are no computers connected via Ethernet.
The Access Control pane of AirPort Admin Utility should list either all of the relevant AirPort ID's or nothing. You can find the AirPort ID of an OS X computer by looking at System Preferences>Network>Show:AirPort>AirPort.
The Internet pane of AirPort Admin Utility should be set in accordance with your Internet provider's requirements. Most likely, it should be set to Connect Using:Ethernet and Configure:Using DHCP.
After verifying the settings, power down the computers, base station and cable or DSL modem for a few minutes, then start them up sequentially, leaving time for each to get fully up and running: first the modem, then the base station, and finally the computers.
The network preferences on the Mac Mini and the iPhone are also relevant. I assume that the preferences are unchanged from those that worked with the AirPort Express.
