Utter frustration:  no CD/DVD icon

My new iMac running OS X Leapord will not longer display a CD/DVD icon on the desktop. I've made no configuration changes of any kind; have not installed or uninstalled any software. The icon simply stopped showing up. It doesn't matter what CD or DVD has been inserted into the drive. Commercial music CD's, software installation DVD's, CD's or DVD's I've recorded myself (music), data CD's or DVD's I've burned, or blank discs on which I want to burn something.
Because of this I can't eject a disc without putting the iMac to sleep and using the eject button on the keyboard, or perform any action that requires clicking the icon and choosing options available from the menu that would pop up.
The only proposed solution to the icon problem in Apple FAQs is to reboot while holding down the mouse button. This has absolutely no effect at all.
After ditching Windows XP, I thought annoyances like this were behind me. I can't put into words how frustrating it is to have what was supposed to be a stable, functional computer & OS just suddenly stop working like this for no reason at all.

Thank you for the reply Antonio.
I've checked the preferences as you suggest and they are correct -- "Show these items on the Desktop" includes CD and DVD so that part is OK; remains unchanged and set to show the icon.
I created a new admin account to test your second suggestion. There was no change on the first attempt -- no CD/DVD icon appears on the new admin account's desktop. To be thorough I tried again, this time completely shutting down the iMac and restarting; then logged into the new admin account again. This also fails -- no CD or DVD icon appears on the desktop. I can't eject any disc without putting the system to sleep and using the manual eject button on the keyboard.
I think the system is only under warranty for 30 days which means I'm dead in the water. The manner in which this happened suggests an OS/software problem, based on what I've read on the net from others who have also lost the icon. Holding down the mouse button while rebooting seems to have worked for some of them. The only other option seems to be completely reinstalling OS X and then all my apps, which to be honest at the moment makes me want to go someplace quiet and cry for a while. This wasn't supposed to happen on the Mac

  • Disk Utility burning issue - DVD icon not removed

    Hi,
I just burned a bunch of disk images to DVD. After the first one was done burning, the DVD ejected automatically. But the image of the DVD on the desktop was not ejected. When I had inserted the a new DVD a second DVD icon appeard on the desktop. I tried naming this one the same title, but that was not allowed by Finder. So I clicked on the first DVD icon and command+e'd it. The new DVD and the DVD icon were ejected, but the new DVD's image stayed on the desktop. When I command+e'd the new DVD icon, the DVD drive made an ejecting noise and the icon disappeared.
Is this how this is supposed to work? I assume the burned DVD icons are supposed to eject when the DVD ejects initially.

Are you running 10.6.3? That update made disk burning more reliable on my Mac Pro.
yes, installed *Mac OS X v10.6.3 v1.1* and *Security Update 2009-001*...
one thing has been improved: restoring an image to a pen drive or HD, now it works at first time.. ( with increased speed).
no matter the burning speed I select, ever with lowliest selected, burning always fails...
but only with disk utility !

  • DVD Icon not appearing

    Hello All
Can anyone tell me why my DVD Icon does not automatically appear on my desktop after shutting my computer down (MBP) with the DVD left in it.
I am having to eject and reinsert the DVD for it to appear back on the screen.
Not a major issue but definitely an annoyance and a curiosity.
    thank you
    RJC

Thank you for the responses, but the issue is not upon insertion, as the DVD is already in when I shut down, yet upon rebooting it simply does not always (sometimes it does) appear on the dektop.

  • No power DVD icon in my laptop (Lenovo G410)

    Dear,
During the collection of my laptop after technical service recently,  I told the staff-in-charge that the desktop is still short of Power DVD icon.  There was such an icon before the service. He told me to download from the following link:
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Lenovo-PowerDVD-10/td-p/1089661
     PowerDVD 10 BD,
When I downloaded & extracted the file, it showed "This software can only be installed on a Lenovo system". Installation was unsuccessful. I think that could be due to a different model and series.
Mine is Lenovo G410 (model 20237).  Where could I download the power DVD that is suitable for my laptop & display it on my desktop?  Please provide a suitable link.
    Thank you for your assistance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I downloaded the free VLC player which is able to play the DVD in my laptop.  Earlier on, when I searched for Cyberlink Power DVD from Windows Store, a price $14.99 (free trial available) was displayed in the website.  I think it is only free during the trial period.

  • DVD icon disappeared from desktop after copy-cannot eject

I am copying a home slide show thru Disk Utility. After the slide show copied, the DVD icon on my desktop disappeared and I cannot eject it to then install a clean DVD to Burn. Please advise.

Launch Disk Utility again. If the DVD is recognized then select it and then select the Eject icon. If it appears but is "greyed out" then select it, then select Mount, and then Eject.
If that does not work, restart your MacBook Pro while holding the trackpad depressed.

  • PROBLEMS WITH VIDEO PLAYING LITTLE RED DVD ICON

Hi my names Reece when i go to preview my project i try to play my video and i can hear the sound perfectly but no video and it has the little red dvd icon on so how can i fix this.

Your file is MPEG-2 format (playback only) and you'll need to convert it to DV Stream.
MPEG Streamclip (free) and the MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20) are one way to convert the DVD files.

Go into Finder on the menu bar. In General check which items you want to appear on the desk top. If you choose *CDs,DVDs, and iPods* it will appear when one of these is connected.

  • CD/DVD Icon and User Account question

I'm a noob with an iBook G3 and have a couple questions, since I just purchased it used and managed to get it up and running.
Firstly, how does one open the CD/DVD player tray? There's no icon on the desktop or options I can find to add one. I did check to make sure the settings were set to display all drives and it does show in the System Info under ATA. So far, the only solution I've found is using the paper clip method and would rather have options.
Secondly, the person who had it previous has a user account, and I was wondering how to remove/reset to make it my own. I have the OS X install CD as well as the OS 9 install disks. Obviously, question one will likely help with question two. Thanks!

    You really need the disc.
You can go to System Preferences > Accounts and set up a new account, being sure to give it Administrative privileges. Log out and log in as the new user. Then you can delete the other account.
The original owner should have given you the Tiger Install disc(s) as part of the deal or should have erased Tiger off the hard drive and reinstalled the version for which you have the Install CD.

  • Frustration. (Sad Ipod Icon & Battery Life icon)

So this is the second ipod the store has given me and it seems that it too has decided to die within 7 months. For some reason, let me say that it was fine last night, is displaying the sad ipod icon. When I hold the menu & select buttons it goes to the battery life icon? So yeah what do I do now? I mean Im going to try to recharge it. I had it plugged in for a while and it came up like it was working then died again. I'm so annoyed because it seems like Mac can't make an ipod that lasts more than 7 months. Stupid. I take care of the thing like I would my own child. If anyone has any ideas of what to do let me know.

yeah that happened to me too, today.
and i've had mine for 16 months.
and i have no idea what to do.
i do have a 2 year warranty on it.
